PO of my house put one of those in on the main garage door, so I got it by
default when I bought the house.

The notifications are a little annoying, but the ability to open and close with
the app can be convenient when I’m in a car that doesn’t have a remote.

Mine is a belt drive, and the quietest garage door and opener I’ve ever had.

Craigslist, like other online places, don’t like VPNs, so they block the known
exit nodes for the services. It’s a minor whack a mole thing, but they do it

We ban employees from using private VPNs for work, for example, because it sets
off alarms when someone logs in from Budapest and an hour later shows up in
Sydney.

Max or right, most states will sell you a temporary plate for a token sum.
However, that means having to make a trip to the DMV, which may be difficult
for a number of reasons.

What I usually do is take a plate off one of my existing vehicles and
registration that won’t need to be driven in my absence and use that. If I
would get stopped I have the plate I’m going to transfer, the registration and
insurance card.

Florida allows plate transfers, so unless an LEO had some kind of “sixth sense”

Clay,

If they’re not set on ND the former Amish farm I posted in the original post
might be of interest. I think it was 100 acres with 60 farmable. Big Amish
house and related buildings that need some work and most likely electricity run
in them. Outside of Wausau, WI, which is about as temperate as ND, probably
better. Under $400k, which seems like a good deal.

Figure you could lease the farmland to start.

Re: [MBZ] Price Of Fuel

2021-05-09 Thread dan--- via Mercedes
As someone involved in the security side of things, I am aware of this
incident, which was due to a ransomeware attack. These exploit the ignorance of
humans to be successful, which is the weakest part of the whole system. If we
relied solely on hardware and software solutions for security we would be far
better off. When the human element is factored in, all bets are off.

You can’t imagine the stupid, idiotic stuff people do or get coerced to do. I
see this stuff all the time, and it never ceases to amaze me.

If I get the right person to respond to my efforts, I’m in and ready to wreak
havoc.

In a case like this, the best thing to do is completely shut down and start
methodically bringing things up with trusted/clean hardware and images. It
takes time, but I assume this is what the transmission line folks are doing.

Re: [MBZ] Brake Light on (was Best Axle Choice)

2017-01-18 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
You've got a stuck float switch in the brake fluid reservoir.

Those one or two little black rubber caps on top of the reservoir cover float
switches that trigger the brake warning switch in the instrument cluster. If
one gets hung up the light will remain on.

One way to tell for sure is to just unplug it and see if the light goes out.

Re: [MBZ] Yesterday's Fun - 300D

2017-01-23 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Gerry,

Good to see you!

I used some 3M wheel with these little orange spines. It's probably as
aggressive as a wire wheel, but seems a little gentler, if that makes sense. I
believe it's called a Scotchbrite radial bristle wheel if memory serves me
correctly.

It did leave some fine scratches, but took a lot of the accumulated grunge off
with minimum effort.

Before I put the wheel to it I cleaned it with a scrub brush and Simple Green,
then popped it in a low oven (170F) to dry it out.

I did the same with the oil filler cap, too.

I'll be interested to see how long it retains the shiny surface. The engine
doesn't have leaks or anything flying around as far as fluids, so I'm hoping it
will stay that way for a while.

For what it's worth I added some wavy washers under the valve cover nuts, too.
There seems to be some confusion as to whether or not there should be a washer
under these (Mercedes says not based on the EPC) but some claim it's necessary
to prevent leakage of oil and oil mist from the valve area.

Heh. It would be the one I cook in, but no.

We have an "outdoor kitchen" on our lanai with a gas stove/range. We do cook in
it when the weather is warm to reduce the heat load on the house. Since it's
outside it's fairly easy to do stuff like this, or use it to set the paint on
my air cleaner housing after I paint it. It clears out rather quickly, and I've
never found any residual odors from non-foodstuffs I've put in it.

I do draw the line at using the dishwasher for parts cleaning, however. I've
occasionally looked for a large ultrasonic cleaner but can't really justify the
space for it.

Re: [MBZ] Fixing floors

2017-01-26 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
I suspect it's all up to who you hire.

We've used inspectors on every purchase or sale we've done since 1986, and
every one of them has been great. We vet them carefully and always get
references, which may have something to do with our success.

The last one we used spent over four hours on our current home when we
purchased it. There was a report (with pictures) of over forty pages we got
that evening as we were fast tracking our closing.

He even did a wind mitigation report as a part of his inspection, which is
usually done separately by an inspector to establish your insurance costs.
That saved us about $400 annually off our homeowner's insurance.

Re: [MBZ] Fixing floors

2017-01-26 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Looks like the area isn't graded away from the house. That's a no-no.

Second, I concur on the engineered wood floor. There are plenty of places that
sell the cheap stuff that would look decent enough to get the place sold. No
need to put good stuff like Pergo in there.

And to pile on, the rot is something that's been there due to moisture/water
incursion for a long time. That's in no way due to rain from a few days of
exposure. I've built several houses that have been open to the elements while
being framed and had rain and snow in them. They dried out quickly with no
consequences. For you to get that extreme of rot and damage you would have to
have water or moisture present continuously for some time, like weeks or months.

The question would be is the area still damp? I suspect it is, as even rotted
areas like this will eventually dry out if the source of moisture is removed.

Re: [MBZ] Fixing floors

2017-01-29 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
I would look at two things regarding the constructIon of the house as to the
moisture:

1.) The gutter in the corner is not configured properly. There should be some
sort of "splash guard" on the outside edge of the gutter to prevent water from
washing over the side. What's happening is that rain is collecting in the roof
valley from either side of the roof. As it collects and flows down the valley,
the velocity and volume increases, which ends up overwhelming the gutter and
washing right over the side of it at that corner. The water then goes to the
ground in large amounts, even with a relatively small amount of rain.

2.) The ground is not graded away from the foundation at the corner. It can't
just be landscaping crap like mulch, you've got to go in there with soil and
fill the area enough to have a grade moving away from the foundation. Once
you've got good compacted soil properly graded you can cover it with
landscaping.

I think we're looking at multiple problems that have come together to cause the
damage over time. If you don't fix the gutter and grading, you're wasting your
time fixing the damaged boards.

And I would definitely replace everything with treated lumber. Sill plates
should be treated per code, I believe. The others would be for insurance.

The number I used is what it's called out by with Mercedes, and is current in
the EPC. Should be $50 at your dealer or they're sandbagging you.

Copied from my texts to my dealer parts guy - I just bought two of them:

"A question, if I may: A 0008350644 magnet, otherwise known as a monovalve kit
or plunger, used to be around $260.00 list. A couple of months ago, the price
dropped to around $50 - I remember asking you to check it for me."

"$40 Wholesale"

I'll post a copy of the invoice when I get home if you like. That was on

Re: [MBZ] Good Deal on an Mustang - I mean SL...

2017-02-01 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Owning a 97 model of this car I can assure you that it's quite easy to work on
once the air cleaner is removed.

Having the exact same engine setup in two W140 chassis cars, I can also attest
to the ease of servicing with the R129 (SL500) versus the W140s. Since the
convertible sits closer to the ground you're not leaning over nearly as much as
you have to with the W140s.

There is plenty of room on both sides of the engine in the convertible as well.
While I haven't had the need yet, I can see where the engine mounts on the
convertible are far more accessible than on the W140 chassis cars.

Re: [MBZ] OT: cell foniness

2017-02-01 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Been a Verizon customer (private and corporate) for nearly 20 years, mainly due
to their superior network and massive buildout. I have four phones and a tablet
on Verizon right now with 12GB of data and everything else unlimited.

I just bought the last SIM-based phone to replace all the CDMA phones we had so
I can bail to another carrier should I choose to do so. Now the oldest phone I
own is an iPhone 5S. I've got an iPhone 6, The wife has a brand new 5SE, the
MIL has a 5S, and the youngest son has a Samsung Android phone of some flavor.
I've got an iPad mini that's got cellular, rarely used but handy when you need
it.

I'm downgrading my plan with Verizon my next billing cycle to 10GB of shared
data, as we've never come close to hitting their data limits. That will bring
the monthly cost for all to about $160 total. I've not found another carrier
who can match the cost I have with Verizon and still provide good service and
coverage.

Anyone want to buy a couple of Verizon iPhone 4s? They're just sitting in my
desk drawer...

Re: [MBZ] Servicing Injectors

2017-02-06 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
There is a guy on German eBay that sells Monark nozzles at very competitive
prices, and ships promptly. I just bought a set for the 300D and they were
$137.00 shipped. I got them in about a week's time from the Fatherland.

Bosch nozzles are garbage according to a couple of fuel injection people I
talked to.

You can disassemble your injectors and clean or replace the nozzles, but they
really need to be recalibrated if you do, especially if you replace the
nozzles. Insist on having the set matched to 5.0 bar or less, as the farther
apart they are as far as opening pressures will have a significant effect on
the smoothness of the idle and efficiency of the engine.

If you've never done this before, don't have a pop tester and an almost
surgically clean work area you're heading for a very unpleasant result.

I believe opening pressures should be around 1800 psi/115 bar, and the set
should be within 50 psi or about 3.5 bar of each other.

Those are ballpark numbers from my memory, a dangerous thing at times.

I don't think so, unless it's goofed up. Look at the line coming from the
radiator cap hose barb. That appears to go over to the side and down. I would
add that there may not have been an overflow bottle on this car since it is a
gray market car. I've never seen a Mercedes overflow bottle with a red cap,
either.

Another odd thing - wood trim on the dash, but the center console has the stock
Euro black plastic panels.

Something is weird about this car. Just a lot of odd things. Maybe a bad
Federalization job?

Re: [MBZ] OT - My first car

2017-02-08 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
1970 Ford Maverick 2 door. Inline six (170 ci), the smallest displacement
version of the venerable inline six 300 engine, three on the tree manual
transmission, heater and AM radio. Light blue.

Funny story about getting this car:

When I was in middle school and my older brother started driving, he had a VW
Beetle. He played baseball and would often car pool with a buddy so they
alternated driving to school and home from practice every other day.

When his car was at home on his "off" days, I would sneak it out and drive
around our neighborhood. This got me fairly proficient at driving a stick.
After all, if you can learn to drive a VW, you can pretty much drive anything,
I think.

Fast forward a couple of years when I get my driver's license and Dad brings
home the Maverick for me.

"Now we're going to go out after dinner and teach you how to drive a stick
shift car", Dad informs me that evening.

We go out in the street with the car and he gets me started. While it took me a
little bit of time to grasp the mechanics of driving a column shift over a
floor shift, I was able to pick it up in short order, maybe 15-20 minutes.

Dad was always amazed at how quickly I "learned" to drive a stick under his
tutelage. He often boasted about what a great teacher he was whenever the
subject came up.

Hee.

Re: [MBZ] Craigslist NC Florida

2017-02-09 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
What Rick and Curt said.

These cars are built to a very different standard than you're used to. While we
all chuckle at the "million mile engine" claims in CL ads, there's a lot more
truth to that than many might believe.

Your car is barely broken in. Short of a catastrophic failure, to go out and
try to find a back up drive train is false economy, as it's unlikely you'll
ever need it.

Now I certainly wouldn't discourage someone from trying to find a tired OM617
they can disassemble and rebuild as a learning experience and potential backup
if ever needed, but to purposely seek a drive train as a spare would be silly,
in my opinion, not to mention a waste of resources.

My 350SDL just turned 269,000 miles. Compression is great, it doesn't leak or
burn oil, and other than having a little delay when engaging reverse,
everything is in great working order. As long as I maintain it well there's no
reason why it wouldn't go another 260k or more without major work. I'm not
about to tie up coin in a spare engine or transmission when there's no need.

Done it for over six years, according to the PO. A non-issue as far as I'm
concerned. All other shifts are crisp and on the money.

It got a Mann filter and Febi fluid change when I got it, and the pan was clean
as was the magnet in it. Fluid was fine and smelled good.

Actually, the accumulator spring in K1 will fix your 2-3 "stacked" shift, and
replacing the accumulator spring in K2 will soften and slightly delay your 3-4
shift. You can do one or both, it's not mandatory to do both. For sure do K1,
as it will make a noticeable difference in the 2-3 upshift.

Suggestions? I doubt the PB unit is at fault, but to be honest, I've never had

was in my 350SDL which has a later design that eliminates this point of failure.

Why? Does the electrical section of the ignition switch feed the blower?

I recall hearing about this before, but didn't know what the rationale was for
it.

Re: [MBZ] slow start today

2017-02-14 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Here's our current political cluster, of which I can only comment on in a
limited manner as my department has been involved with the investigation:

Our county has a commission, the PTC, which manages cabs licenses and other
forms of paid public transportation. It's been well known to be a serious
cesspool for reasons too numerous to go into here. Suffice to say when Uber
and Lyft came onto the scene a year ago, the PTC and its "buddies", the local
cab companies, were in a major uproar over it and did everything they could to
keep them out of the County.

The guy who headed the PTC and his right hand thug were former sheriff's
investigators, to give you some context.

While both ridesharing companies attempted to negotiate ways of working in the
County, the PTC threatened them with all sorts of nasty tickets, citations,
etc., etc. to try and discourage them from operating.

So dumb and dumber cook up this idea where they get cabbies to volunteer to be
customers for the ridesharing companies and hire them out. The punch line is
that when they take the "rider" to their destination, someone from the PTC is
waiting there with a citation for $700. Surprise!

The County administrator got wind of this while it was going on due to the
complaints and put the head of the PTC on suspension and ordered an
investigation. This only pissed the doofus off, so it appears that in the
interim he gathered up many of the commission employees' County issued cell
phones and took them to an outside data forensics place to have them wiped. So
much for public records!

So now a citizen has filed suit for public records disclosure and doofus is
pleading the Fifth. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has, as one might
expect, opened an investigation, as destruction of public records is a crime.

The best part? Some of his texts between he and his minion (who has since
resigned as well) have been made public, and they're not at all complimentary
they used to be online but have since been taken down. Here's an op-ed piece on
them:

Talked to the owner today. Second owner, Florida car, service records,
evaporator and wiring harness replaced, IP O rings replaced late last year,
everything works but RR window doesn't like to go all the way down. No rust,
good tires, etc., etc.

I need to confer with SWMBO on this. I'm running out of driveway space, even
though this would replace an existing vehicle after a short period of time.

Car was a beater, sort of.

The body wasn't bad and as stated previously all the known issues were
addressed, such as evapectomy, delivery valve O rings and washers, wiring

What put me off were the "repairs" that had been done to the car. Lots of short
cuts, stuff eliminated and bypassed, etc. it would have been a major
undertaking to get everything right again, and that's if the components
involved, like the PB unit, were still functional.

For example, the AC had a wire run directly to the compressor clutch. That is,
it ran 100% of the time, which explained why the expansion valve appeared to be
frozen. And this was on a 66F day. Lights and signals worked, but no hazards.
Things like the fuel heater and windshield washer heater all bypassed. Messy.

Interior was actually pretty nice, with the wood being cracked and a little bit
of headliner droop starting to show. The upholstery, which was a really dark
tan like tobacco (color code 174, whatever that is) was in really good shape.

I might have considered it at $1000, knowing it would take another grand to
make it safe and fully functional, but there's no way I would pay his $1900
asking price.

I'll see if he comes back to me on it as I expect he will. He won't like my
response and will probably blow me off. However, if I could get it for $1000 I
would do it.

I was amazed at the performance of the car despite not being turbocharged.
That's still a pretty spritely ride considering it's normally aspirated. It
drove well and was almost as good as a gas W124, I thought.

Almost forgot to add - car has a rebuilt title, too. Not sure if I mentioned
that he bought it in 2008 from an insurance company with a hole in the oil pan.
I thought it had a salvage title, found out it was a rebuilt title. That's
actually better, as it makes the insurance companies happier. This was 80k
ago, so it's really a non-issue to me.

It's a $1000 car, especially with the title the way it is. That's a major freak
out for most potential buyers. Too bad he doesn't point it out in the CL
listings, which he is spamming CL with every day or two. It's going to be
there for a long time at $1900 FIRM.

Yeah, that's probably the case, however, it points at an approach towards
repairs that suggests some serious half-assedness, which means there's more
stuff like it to discover as you dig deeper into the car.

As for the M103 in the W126 chassis, I'm looking for some actual numbers from
someone that's owned one. If you're saying it only gets in the mid teens, I
would want to know this is from direct experience

The seller is a former used car dealer who has retired. He rings all the bells
- open shirt, lots of gold chains, etc., etc. He's got a number of MBs around
and appears to know the cars fairly well - he was able to discuss some issues
with other models at a level well above having casual knowledge.

It's still a $1000-$1200 car.

Close. Tony.

What was even better was that he had me follow him to a parking lot a couple of
blocks away from his house because he has a neighbor who sits out in his garage

I made note of the guy when I pulled up. Typical retired guy with no life.

Maybe "Tony" is in witness protection?

We saw it land and take off from MacDill AFB last week from our office, which
has a great view of Tampa Bay and the base. Had to look up the NOTAMs to get an
idea of when it was coming and going, since you can't track it on any of the

If you think it looked big flying over, you should stand out on the apron under

[MBZ] Check One Off the Bucket List

Re: [MBZ] Check One Off the Bucket List

2017-02-20 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
I'm pleased with it. I'll probably have another $500-$700 in it to get it 100%.
A big part of that would be a pair of rear tires, if it really needs them.
Owner claims one of them seems to have a belt failing, but I didn't notice it
during the test drive.

Cosmetics are pretty good, southern car, no rust, just a lot of little niggly
things it needs.

The worst issue is the stuck rear caliper. I'll slap a Cardone reman from Rock
Auto on it with some cheap discs and we'll be on the way. AC has a leak, most
likely the compressor shaft seal as it's the original. $21 for a compressor
reseal and an hour's work and we're on our way with that.

Everything else is piddly. Stuff like all new copper fuses, lamps, hoses, etc.
will add up, but none of them is significant.

I've already put a spreadsheet together with parts, numbers, suppliers and
prices so I'll start the ordering process this afternoon. New keys will be
ordered and a VMI has been faxed to me right now.

Fun!

Re: [MBZ] Check One Off the Bucket List

2017-02-20 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
It will replace the Tommymobile (1998 S420).

I understand your thought process, and the W124 would have been my first pick
for sure, but the owner wouldn't budge on price ($1900) and the budget would
have been pretty well wiped out by that. It needed a set of tires for sure, so
that would have been a serious hit as far as initial expense. There were
certainly other issues that had to be addressed, but none as significant as a
new set of skins.

For as little as I paid for the 300SEL, I've got lots of left over coin to
cover its needs and really make it nice. The soon to be PO has extensive
records that do show its mileage for the last eight years, and they
consistently got in the mid to low 20s on the highway, very high teens city. On
a good day with a tailwind the S420 can barely make it into the low 20s on a
straight highway. Normal around town ranges from 16-18 mpg, if that.

The W124 diesel was a rebuilt title and had no documented history. I just got
the VMI for the 300SEL and it was dealer maintained for most of its life. First
owner, sold as a CPO car next on what appears to be a lease, then a private
sale. It's been well cared for and has good provenance, which is very important
to me.

And, it's a W126. No more electronics, coffins, ECUs, etc., at least not to
the extent the W140 has. Simple, easy to fix/maintain, and many common parts
with my 350SDL. The M103 is a good engine and battle tested, its weaknesses are
well known and understood.

It was not my first choice, but I'm pleased with the outcome.

If I recall, these motors have a thermal protection device in them to prevent
overloading. I have seen these fail and render the motor useless (until you

[MBZ] Today's 300SEL Fun

2017-02-23 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Actually yesterday's...

Was still pretty pooped from a full day of work and turning in late the night
before, so I figured I would do some low impact stuff on the car last night.

So I changed the oil and filter, replaced a leaky monovalve insert and removed
some sort of strange kludge that was on the AC wiring.

I forgot what a PITA changing oil on an M103 is, that is, how messy it can be
with the inverted filter. Normally I would punch a hole in the top so it can
drain down while the oil extractor is doing its thing, but there was an
aftermarket (STP) filter on it and I didn't want to booger it up before I was
sure I could remove it.

Naturally, some ham-handed ape installed the filter, meaning it was far more
than hand tight. Fortunately I have a set of the "caps" that fit the ends of
spin on filters. That allowed me to remove the filter with some effort, but not
avoid the oil bath that comes out when the filter is removed. Grrr.

The ACC made full heat unless you had the temperature dial on the maximum cold
detent, so I was pretty sure the monovalve was bad. Surprisingly, it wasn't
torn or damaged that I could find, but there was some coolant behind the
diaphragm so I changed it anyway. A short run afterwards yielded no heat on
normal temp settings. Good.

The wiring around the AC accumulator was all weird and there was a Bosch relay
tie wrapped to a support. It wasn't clear what was being accomplished by all of
this, but it looked like they were bypassing the low pressure switch or
something to that effect. I wasn't going to mess with trying to sort it out, so
it got removed. They didn't cut any wires, just used crimps to do the
connections, so I was able to remove it all without having to rewire anything.
The original connectors were still in place so everything went back to where it
belonged.

They got B+ by tapping the aux cooling fans strip fuse, so that got
disconnected and the terminals cleaned and strip fuse replaced. I'll sort the
AC out down the road, but I'm suspecting there's another compressor reseal in
my future.

One thing I noticed that I haven't seen before: What appears to be the KLIMA
relay has a big black knob on top of it with a "1" and "0". Anyone have any
idea what this might be? I'll post a picture of it tonight if I get a chance.

Why not just copy the files to a USB thumb drive and copy them on to the new

Both Windoze and a Mac photo software will readily import image files when they

Any name brand USB stick is fine. SanDisk, etc., any of the major memory folks.

If it's just pictures, the "import" function in the native Photos app on the
Mac will bring them all in at one time. Copy the contents of the "Pictures"
folder to your USB stick, plug it into your Mac, open the Photos application
and click "File > Import" and it will ask you to navigate to the location where
the picture files are. Once there, you click "OK" and it imports them into the
Photos" application and you're done.

Exactly.

And yesterday was a classic example. Bands of rain moving to the NNW with a

And today we return to our "Groundhog Day" weather pattern for the "winter":

Re: [MBZ] From FCP OE vs. Genuine, what is the difference?

2017-03-01 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
You got that email from FCP Euro, too?

There is some truth to it, as I will always check Lemförder stuff for it and
have seen it numerous times.

Good idea.

Re: [MBZ] Powder Coating?

2017-03-02 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes

finish was as hard as a rock, I recall that. It held up well on the exhaust
considering the temperatures involved.
