Tom:

Overheating of the PMD module is universal to the 6.5 engine and
unrelated to fuel choice. The injector pump is heat soaked because it
lives in the valley between the heads, the fuel going through it is
intended to cool it and the PMD. This is Stanadyne's design theory, but
it is busted. The operating temp. rating of the transistors in the PMD
is 65C, lower than the ambient temp under the hood!

I am enjoying the most satisfactory solution to it: I made an extension
cable, remote-mounted the PMD in the front bumper hole, and bolted/wired
on a powered-fan cpu heatsink. My PMD never gets beyond barely warm to
the touch. I can help you do the cable and have a cache of suitable cpu
fan/heatsinks.

The other issue on the 6.5 is that biodiesel causes the fuel filter
o-ring to swell and degrades/waxes the bottom, so that when you pull off
the filter to inspect your stalled out vehicle, you can't put it back
on. Ask me how I know. I'm installing a big Racor filter and may bypass
the stock filter entirely.

the change broke #1 off and it the rattled around in there and damaged
something. Seem logical? In any case, Im heading back out now to yank

Luthor,

Now that you have opposing opinions, I hope Dave Mienman will chime in as
he has done this. And his photo website is open to the public. My
recollection is that the later heads have an inclined pre chamber
which CAN be machined

and shimmed to use the older vertical pre chambers and injectors. What I
don't know is if there is any corresponding change in the tops of
the pistons

which would preclude using the later head, with the later pre chambers and
injectors on the 87 engine. You should ask the seller for a photo
of the top of

his pistons.

Keep us informed, $10 is not your top bid is it!!!?

Is this not the same as an 83' 300D? If so, I think you're asking for a
heck of a lot more work than speding the roughly $12 plus shipping for a
newer model primer pump that does not require unscrewing to use, that
simply
requires unscrewing the old and screwing in the new to replace...

Then again if you like monkeying around with stuff, this could be a good

[MBZ] 300CD oil usage

2006-10-06 Thread Luther
Since everyone has a high amount of time invested in this, I thought I'd give
you the latest update. I let the engine sit with Marvel Mystery Oil
sitting in each cylinder for nearly 2 weeks before finally starting it up.
Once the initial smoking was done, it settled into it's normal amount of
visible smoke at idle. Rats, no change. So I drove it to the fuel station,
filled up with a tank of B10 and drove it for a few days. After a day or so of
driving like I stole it, I ran some full throttle starts onto the interstate
with people behind me at night. I could notice a definate reduction in the
amount of smoke/particulate in the headlights behind me. It was more like
cruising throttle at 70-75mph was before and the smoke/particulate while
cruising at 70-75 was not visible. This is a definate change. So, I took the
car to KS/NE and back last weekend, over 1000 miles of mostly 65-80. When I
parked it for the first time in KS after about 450 miles, it left a 6-8" spot
of oil on the ground. This is odd...this car never left more than 2 or 3
nickle or quarter sized drops under it in multiple days here at work...the
puddle only took 2-3 hours... So, when I arrived back home, I put some
cardboard under the car and it puddled up again, right under the front edge of
the oil pan. I looked a little closer, and it appears to be draining down from
the crank shaft and front main seal. Finally, something visible that I can
repair.

Read the manual cover to cover. I'm sure there are features of the phone that

I just purchased a used IBM Thinkpad R32 2.0 Ghg, 40G harddrive, 256MB memory,
CDRW/DVD, etc for less than $450 shipping/tax included. They also have several

Re: [MBZ] How many gears in an 83' 300D?

2006-10-19 Thread Luther

All of the 123/126's I've driven started in 1st gear. I double checked this
morning on the way to work in my SD (soon to be for sale...) and it will start
in first. Sometimes it will shift into 2nd within 1 second of
starting, but it
shifts none the less. This is with the gear shift in D. Could this be
related

to the bowden cable adjustment? I've played with my SD's adjustment enough so
that it has even shifts all the way up and will down shift when under no
throttle and I move the gear shift from D-S.
Does anyone have factory documentation showing that these transmissions are
suppose to start in 2nd unless the kickdown switch is activated?

While walking down the street one day a US senator is tragically hit by a
truck and dies.

His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance.

"Welcome to heaven," says St. Peter. "Before you settle in,

it seems there

is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see, so
we're not sure what to do with you."

"No problem, just let me in," says the man.

"Well, I'd like to, but I have orders from higher up. What we'll do
is have you spend one day in hell and one in heaven. Then you
can choose where to spend eternity."

"Really, I've made up my mind. I want to be in heaven," says the

senator.

"I'm sorry, but we have our rules."

And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes
down, down, down to hell. The doors open and he finds himself
in the middle of a green golf course. In the distance is a clubhouse
and standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians
who had worked with him.

Everyone is very happy and in evening dress. They run to greet him, shake
his hand, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at
the expense of the people.

They play a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster, caviar
and champagne.

Also present is the devil, who really is a very friendly guy who
has a good time dancing and telling jokes. They are having such a
good time that before he realizes it, it is time to go.

Everyone gives him a hearty farewell and waves while the elevator
rises...

The elevator goes up, up, up and the door reopens on heaven where St. Peter
is waiting for him.

"Now it's time to visit heaven."

So, 24 hours pass with the senator joining a group of contented souls

moving

from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time
and, before he realizes it, the 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter

returns.

"Well, then, you've spent a day in hell and another in heaven. Now
choose your eternity."

The senator reflects for a minute, then he answers: "Well, I would

never

have said it before, I mean heaven has been delightful, but I think I would
be better off in hell."

So St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down,
down to hell.

Now the doors of the elevator open and he's in the middle of a
barren land covered with waste and garbage.

He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and
putting it in black bags as more trash falls from above.

The devil comes over to him and puts his arm around his shoulder.
"I don't understand," stammers the senator. "Yesterday I was

here

and there was a golf course and clubhouse, and we ate lobster and
caviar, drank champagne, and danced and had a great time. Now
there's just a wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable.

What

happened?"

The devil looks at him, smiles and says, "Yesterday we were
campaigning.. Today you voted."

Shortly after I did a valve job on my car, there were several tanks where I

attribute this to good fuel, perfectly set injection timing, no stretch on a
new chain, excellent compression from the valve job and a fairly low mileage
bottom end (~110k), no carbon in the prechambers, excellent injectors (inc 3
rebuilts with very tight pop pressures) good air flow from a clean head and
intake, properly adjusted valves, maintaining high tire pressures, not
riding around with much more in the car except my then 175lb self, and,
being 17 and paying for my own insurance and gas, driving within the speed
limit. In the last 40k miles and 4+ years, thats slowly dropped down to
about 28 on mostly highway driving (now usually closer to 80 than 65 or 70)

and shortly there after hit 110 and then shot up to 120...gr. I stoped and
let it cool back down, but that wasn't enough. So I babied it back to the

Re: [MBZ] procedure to change Motor mounts on SDL

2006-11-09 Thread Luther
One suggetion on tools. Have a stubby 6mm 1/4hex bit like comes in this set
http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?cat=Hand+Tools%2C+General+Purpose&pid=00947488000&vertical=TOOL&subcat=Screwdrivers&BV_UseBVCookie=Yes
and a driver such as this
http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?cat=Hand+Tools%2C+General+Purpose&pid=00941715000&vertical=TOOL&subcat=Screwdrivers&BV_UseBVCookie=Yes

That is how I remove the 6mm bolts on the motor mounts. Works really well, and
is plenty low profile. Otherwise, a very well written article.

Oh yeah, this is a reverse flow flush. In the bottom of the radiator and out
the top.

Re: [MBZ] SDL radiator flush

2006-11-11 Thread Luther
I was flushing the radiator alone, removed from the car. Once I ran the hot
water through the radaitor for about 20 minutes and had verified that the
radiator was evenly warm on both sides (remember-it use to be stone cold in the
center while in the car) I emptied the citric acid out and flushed the radiator
with clean water-both reverse flow and normal flow. No more red flakes.
Tomorrow, I will hook up to the radiator hoses (already have a modified open
thermostat installed) and flush/air agitate the block for several hours. Then
I'll install the radiator and see if it cools any better.

[MBZ] SDL clogged radiator update

2006-11-13 Thread Luther
Ran some water through the block, both normal flow and reverse flow and it had
no flecks of orange/red like the radiator. So, I reinstalled the radiator,
filled it up with water and drove it for about 15 minutes. I had to work to
get the car to reach 60c. When I parked it back at the house, I pulled out the
laser thermometer and took temps of the radiator. Here are the temps in C.
top left57 top57 top right46
middle left 52 middle 52 middle right 42
bottom left 31 bottom 28 bottom right 25

Seems to me that I can proclaim it nearly all cured of its cloggedness. I
might actually try to drive it this week.

Re: [MBZ] Noisy 300D engine

2006-11-20 Thread Luther

The best way to check the problem is to grab your 17 mm open end wrench and
crack #1 injector line, if the sound goes away-that's your problem. If not,
tighten the injector line and wait for the engine idle to smooth out, then
repeat on #2, #3, etc. until you find the source. If none of them quiet the
sound, the problem is deep in the engine.

My S350 was nailing horribly when I first got it. The injector springs
were worn causing them to fire too soon. A set of rebuilt injectors

[MBZ] '82 300CD excessive oil useage

2006-12-08 Thread Luther
Ok, so it's an old subject, but Kaleb's posted the question to me several times
about the cold starting on this car. This morning it was 13 degrees when I
left for work. Glowed for 15 seconds (counted by the ticking of the dash
clock) and turned the starter right after the glow light went out for 1-1.5
seconds, and it fired up and began to idle at 600 rpm (without any throttle
assistance), nearly as smooth as glass. It only missed once after about 3
seconds of idling. This car has Delo 400 in the crank and NOT Mobile 1 like my
SD which can be a tad more rough to start when it's that cold. Sounds to me
like the compression is ok.
I am seeing a small amount of oil in the vacuum lines and have parts from Rusty
to rebuild the vacuum pump. Though I still cannot see how 1 qt every 300 miles
can disappear through just the vacuum system.....

Figure out where the vacuum pump exhaust goes (into the air filter? in
most 123s diesels I think) and that's where a bad vacuum pump sends most
of the oil.

Nope, no gobs of oil in the air cleaner. No vent out of the vacuum pump, only
the main hard vacuum line. My vacuum pump looks identical to the one

Look in the air filter, you should see gobs of oil in there from where
the line from the vac pump goes in. If not, then there is some other
problem with where the oil is going.

I can't see how it goes from the vacuum pump to the engine on this car. There
is no vent hose to the air cleaner, the IP shutoff valve is new, and
the EGR is
blocked off. Where else is there to loose oil? Could it be an IP seal
sucking

oil in and mixing it with the fuel???

In trucking, we have dropped drive lines all the time but rarely do they drop
on the interstate. Usually it's associated with sliding the trailer tandems,
being stuck in a ditch/snow/mud when the driver overtorques the driveline.
Only once have I delt with a driveline on the interstate at 63mph...happened in
KCMO only about 3 miles from the International dealer. Took a week to get the
damn d/l from Canada

When's the last time you drove I-540 from Alma to Fayetteville? There's the
one hill leading to the tunnel. 3 miles at a solid 80% full throttle to
maintain 70mph. Slows nearly all semis to 50mph or less. Full throttle will
generally gain about 1mph per 5 seconds or so with my SD, slightly better with
the CD. The very next hill (north bound) is just as steep, if not more so, but
shorter...only 1.5 miles. That's about the best you can findunless you run
the gorgeous Highway 71 between Alma and Fay...
