[meteorite-list] Curious Pics from Mars
Dear list, I know, off topic, but this really is an interesting article re the life on Mars debate, and it has nothing to do with Hoagland or photos of artificial structures on Mars. [meteorite-list] Meteor-Wrong Gone from Ebay
All, The eBay auction for the Vintage Meteorite Ball (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=1083831262) was removed before it was complete. I don't know if I had anything to do with it, but I sent e-mail to the seller and encouraged him to have it checked out. This guy is _local_ to me (we both live in Columbus, Ohio), so I thought he would have no excuse to not have it looked over if I offered to do so. He didn't reply, but he did remove the auction. Re: [meteorite-list] Meteor-Wrong Gone from Ebay
Bob, I wrote the seller last night asking what happened. She said," I'm the middle "woman" in this auction. The owner of this was contacted by an employee of the Perkins Conservatory here in Ohio and was asked to bring the item in for testing. He choose to meet with him. I can let you know what conclusions were reached if you'd like." I wrote back and ask to be kept informed . Hi , I noticed this also, But is it proper to cancel an auction minutes before it is to end ? And in this auction it was minutes before it was to end. I would be very upset if this happened to me if I were bidding ! It makes me wonder ? An auction can be canceled at any time buy the seller ? ? An auction can be canceled at any time buy the seller ? If it hasn't received any bids, yes. Seems fairit might frustrate people who were planning on bidding on it, but from the seller's point of view, if there's absolutely no bidder-commitment, no visible interest on his item, he should be able to change his mind about selling it, for whatever reason. Actually there may be bids, but the bids must first be closed. EBay says: "Canceling Bids: You can cancel bids in an auction if one or more of the following circumstances apply: 1.You have decided to end the auction early 2.A bidder contacts you to back out of a bid 3.You cannot verify the identity of a bidder after trying all reasonable means of contact Note: Since bid cancellations are publicized in the auction bidding history, you will be asked to provide a reason for your cancellation to bidders. End the Auction Early You may miss out on just the bid you've been waiting for if you end your auction early. Still, there may be times when you have a valid reason to end an auction early. You may end your auction if you decide not to sell the item. To do this, you must choose the option to cancel all bids on your auction. You may also choose the option to sell to the high bidder. You will need to provide a reason explaining why you have ended the auction early. This reason can be found at the top of the Closed item page. You may also provide additional details in your item description. " Respectfully, Ken Newton
[meteorite-list] Wrangel Island Meteorites (from R Harvey with permission)
Hi, the arctic has a lot of generic problems as sites for meteorite concentrations by ice- fast moving, young ice, relatively warm conditions (Antarctica is on average between 20 and 50 deg. colder during the year for given latitude and altitude), higher accumulation rates. In my humble opinion only portions of the NE side of Greenland approaches the kinds of conditions thought to support Antarctic meteorite concentration mechanisms. For those reasons I wouldn't expect a meteorite concentration site on a small icesheet like Wrangell. See Harvey et al. (2001) Meteoritics and Planetary Science 36, p. 807-816 for my thoroughly objective opinion on where Arctic meteorite concentrations might be. best, rph .. Dear List, Have any meteorites been found on Wrangel Island? While looking at some wind and surface conditions, including possible ice ablative winds; seems like there should be some under similar conditions to Antarctica but in miniature. But the meteorites would not be so miniature. Just a gut hunch. Francis Graham __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Gregory You can close an Ebay auction early even if there are bids on the item. Doing so on a regular basis will bring action against you from Ebay, but there are legitimate reasons to close an auction early. Before it can be closed, all the bid must be canceled. I closed an auction early just a few weeks ago when I found out the meteorite I had listed wasn't really what my wholesaler claimed it was. [meteorite-list] Eagle Butte - One more time
List: From a customer we received a sample of the material recently referred to and discussed on this list as Eagle Butte. Sample chemical analysis summary: The received material is porous and not homogeneous. There are varying proportions of FeO, MgO, Ca, Al, and Dolomite within clumps. The terms clast and breccias are not used to define these concentrations as the boundaries are poorly defined. We found no detectable Ni. In our opinion this is ferrous slag similar to the iron slag used for road bases. (actually Canada is an important source of ferrous slag accounting for about 26% of USA imported needs) Bernd Pauli wrote: Unfortunately there is no crater information in the 5th issue of the Catalogue. Those among us who still have access to the BBB (the Big Blue Book = 4th edition of the Catalogue) know that Eagle Butte is mentioned as a doubtful feature: A disturbed area, 10 km in diameter and 30-40 million years old, may be meteoritic, P.B. Robertson and R.A.F. Grieve, Journ. Roy. Astron. Soc. Canada, 1975, vol. 69, p. 1, but compare T.B. Haites and H. van Hees, Journ. Alberta Soc. Petrol. Geologists, 1962, vol. 10, p. 511. Bore holes and electric log data for the structure, H.B. Sawatzky in, Impact and Explosion Cratering, eds. D.J. Roddy, R.O. Pepin and R.B. Merrill, Pergamon Press (New York), 1977, p. 461. To Bernd's contribution I would add the work of Hodge and Sawatzky: Eagle Butte, Alberta Lat/Long: N49 deg. 42', W110 deg. 30' Diameter: 19 km Age 65 Ma Condition: Eroded Eagle Butte is in the Cypress Hills area of southern Alberta (Canada). Cypress Hills Provincial Park occupies part of the eastern portion of the structure. The structure was recognized as a geophysical anomaly long before it was found to be an impact feature. Both surface geology and sub-surface information from wells support its identification as such. The geophysical contours show a central uplift and a surrounding ring depression. Meteorite Craters and Impact Structures of the Earth, Hodge, Paul, 1994, University of Cambridge Press. And Two probable Late Cretaceous astroblemes in Western Canada: Eagle Butte, Alberta and Dumas, Saskatchewan. Geophysics, 41, 1261 - 1271 Is there existing meteoritic material associated with the Eagle Butte structure? I don't know. All that I can say for sure is that the material we received is not meteoritic. A word of caution: Some of the longer-term members of the List may remember our involvement with material that came to be referred to as the Emerald Meteorite. (summary story about the Emerald Meteorite, for those unfamiliar with it is at: http://www2.suite224.net/~editorsb/updates/meteorite.htm ) Our chemical analysis showed it to be a foundry by-product, probably from the lining of a refractory kiln and not meteoritic. Some members may still have samples of this material in their collections. Legal consequences resulting from this were unpleasant. Fortunately Tim McCoy's (Smithsonian) independent analysis concurred with ours and the finders/promoters backed off. My point ( something I'm sure that many List members have experienced) is that it is sometimes very, very, difficult to convince someone untrained or unfamiliar with meteoritics that what they have is of terrestrial occurrence. If they choose a legal path it can become costly and uncomfortable for all. I find it far better in these circumstances, that when asked, to offer an opinion on the material rather than to speak in absolutes that may be heard as a denouncement. Everyone has an opinion but denouncements can get you sued. Of course, this is just my opinion. Hi All, Has anyone checked out the latest images of Iceberg B-22? This sucker is over 2100 square miles! Think how many meteorites are on it, rafting away from the South Pole. http://uwamrc.ssec.wisc.edu/amrc/iceberg.html Since it is no longer technically part of Antarctica, why don't we all pitch in and mount an expedition down there, set up camp on the iceberg, and mine its meteorites on snowmobile before it melts and dumps its cargo into the ocean? ;-) I'm only half-kidding... --Rob __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Re: [meteorite-list] Eagle Butte - One more time
One party heard from... I sent off my chunk of Eagle Butte to Dr. Moore at ASU, carefully not giving him any but the broadest of details so he couldn't be accused (!) of bias. I expect he has many more interesting specimens to examine, but in the end, the analysis will probably be the same. Seems that the only thing that comes from Eagle Butt is... eagle doo-doo? Related to frass-ite? I do note that geopaleo_guy has stopped selling Eagle Butte Meteorites. I have not heard back from him regarding my e-mail; I think it's about time to make a complaint. I've been looking over my meteorite display at the library where I work, and despite the humid, salty air here, my Nantan hasn't shed one pinprick of rusty shale. It's still just lightly covered in orange, which may have protected it from further corrosion. The Sikhote-Alin, on the other hand, is spalling off tiny flakes; that has to be a reversal of the usual! [meteorite-list] A lot of new things! AD
Hello Everybody, Since the List is quiet tonight, this might be the right time to tell you that I have finally posted on my site all the beautiful things I brought back from Tucson: Bouvante, Agoult, Tambo Quemado, Huckitta, Gibeon, Millbillillie, ., etc., and of course a lot of Tafassasset. And I also posted a whole bunch of new pieces of jewelry, from earings to tie tacks, from Libyan Glass to Canyon Diablo. Coming soon: belt buckles with pieces of Gold Basin. And I am delighted to offer in exclusivity the great Ensisheim woodcut some of you saw at Michael Blood's auction in Tucson or on the pictures. The whole documentation is on my "Meteoritical Miscellany" page. And of course, Alain Carion's new book. At $9.95 retail price, 37 pages and a lot of pictures, it is a great introduction book, the perfect answer for that friend or family member who does not "understand" meteorites. Dealers discount available upon request. And there will be more soon. And more thin-sections. Enjoy! and of course let me know if you have any questions or comments.
