[meteorite-list] Request for the List Admin

2004-07-08 Thread MexicoDoug
Bob and List,

However it got here, I just wanted to say the first virus my computer has contracted in years, was removed promptly a couple of days ago:  The same W32.BeagleX... that Bob Verish also received and cleaned, so it looks pretty convincing to me that this is independent confirmation of being list related.
Saludos Doug

Hello Art,

As you well know, I've been exchanging messages with
you off-List about all of the problems with Archives
ever since you changed service providers.  Most of
those problems were about how all of the List Archive
messages now have a new URL and all have been
renumbered, causing links to be broken if you use
those URLs in a web page.  Luckily Google has those
Archived messages "cached", but it is impossible to
fix the links on our web pages if we don't know the
new "message number"!

I understand that your service provider has no
interest in resolving that problem, but now you have
another problem which can't be ignored:

You will need to go into the server archives and
remove all the messages that have virus attachments.

The manner in which your service provider is handling
attachments to List posts (by publishing a link to the
infected attachment) is exposing the public to the
possiblity of infection.

For example:

ALWIL Avast 4.0 should make the work, and it´s free for
home users.
You can also get Kerio -firewall (also free) from the same
site;

http://www.avast.com/index.html

site to download;

http://www.avast.com/eng/products/free_software/index.html

system requirements;

For a computer with 95/98/Windows Me: PC 486, 32 MB RAM,
50 MB of free hard disk space

For a computer with Windows NT 4.0: PC 486, 24 MB RAM, 50
MB of free hard disk space, Service Pack 3 and higher installed

For a computer with Windows 2000/XP: PC Pentium, 64 MB RAM
(128 MB recommended), 50 MB of free hard disk space

The program itself requires about 20 MB hard disk space, the rest
is reserved for the virus recovery database file and its index (VRDB, also
known as the "integrity database" from the previous version).

A functional MS Internet Explorer 4 or higher is required
for the program to work.

This product cannot be installed on a server operating system
(Windows NT/2000/2003 Server families).

2004-07-08 Thread Ryan Darby
I'm got the IT guru I used to be, playing at project manager now, but
I'll try :

Well saying get weekly updates of a virus checker is too obvious.

The only one I have is : turn the auto-preview off if you use Outlook.
There are, believe it or not, viruses out there that can infect you when
you open the mail, without you needing to open the attachment. It has
been a few years since they came out and are probably old hat to the
checkers, but just in case.

Think about getting something like Scotty the Windows Watchdog, which is
just a free monitor to see if things load themselves onto your computer.
Many are not really viruses that will cause harm but still are
considered malicious. They come from many websites, even the more
respectable looking ones.

If a popup appears while browsing the web, don't push any buttons on it.
Close it by pressing the cross on the top right to kill the window. It
is easy to make the No button mean yes on the popups.

Make sure your virus checker is actually set to scan all email as you
download it, it might not be. You want it to intercept the messages
before they hit your machine, and not just scan once a week after the
fact.

[meteorite-list] Lights in Sky Reported From At Least Five States

2004-07-08 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.corsicanadailysun.com/articles/2004/07/08/news/news10.txt

Lights in sky reported over at least five states
Associated Press
July 8, 2004

FORT WORTH (AP) -- An apparent meteor shower lit up the night sky
from Texas to western Tennessee Wednesday night, prompting a flood
of reports to law enforcement officers throughout a five-state region.

Several residents from Kerens called the Corsicana Daily Sun
Wednesday night to report the siting. "It looked like something
bigger than an airplane," Bobby Boucher told the paper.

"Whatever the object was, it had to be pretty high up in the sky and
pretty big for such a large area of people to have seen it,"
weather service forecaster Mike Berry in Shreveport, La., said in a
story in Thursday's Tyler Morning Telegraph.

Said John Clabes, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration,
"The thing was seen from Memphis through eastern Oklahoma as far
north as Tulsa and down to the Houston air route center."

The lights flashed across the sky shortly after 9 p.m. in portions
of Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Tennessee.

"I never saw anything that large fall out of the sky," said Jeff
LaCroix, who spotted what appeared to be a fireball over the Fort
Worth sky. "It traveled all the way across the sky until it burned
itself out close to the ground."

Clabes said the spotting was obviously a meteorite. "I think it's
probably a shower. Instead of one, it's probably several," he said.

A spokesman for the National Weather Service in Fort Worth said the
sightings were not tied to a weather event.

"The front part was fiery red and it had a greenish glow behind it
and a long red tail," Barbara Hays, who lives in Bossier Parish,
La., told Shreveport television station KSLA.

[meteorite-list] Quick hello and thoughts on Shirokovsky

2004-07-08 Thread Adam Hupe
Hi List,

Just a quick note to say hello. I am starting to get caught up on emails
and am now receiving List postings. Some really interesting topics have
been posted lately, including the Shirokovsky objects.

My feelings have not changed regarding this pseudometeorite. It looks man
made to me and the way it was presented to the public leaves me suspicious.
Some things that bother me are:

* Slices were sold without any external surfaces
* Mass cut, prepared and labeled like inventory you would find in a hardware
store,
not the way typical meteorite dealers do business. As far as I know, not
a single
complete stone, end-cut or complete slice was ever offered. Why is this?
* A website was created immediately with images trying too hard to sell the
story. It
looked like a well thought out marketing campaign to me not something
that naturally
   unfolded.
* Was sold with fake scientific documentation when first announced.
* Most faces are obscured in expedition photos, again not natural.
* Was continued to be sold as a meteorite even after being discredited.
* The nickel content is too high to show crystallization patterns.
* People nobody ever heard of were involved in its distribution.
* ...and a lot more troubling thoughts.

These circumstances lead me to believe there is a lot more to the story.
Maybe I am too suspicious but this one just doesn't feel right to me.

All the best,

Adam Hupe

[meteorite-list] Arkansas fireball, July 07, correction

2004-07-08 Thread Stephen McMann
Dear list,

I tried to send this post earlier, but it had a few factual errors and it
did not seem to go through properly. Let's see if this one works.

For what it is worth, I saw the fireball last night (9:21 pm CDT) that was
seen over parts of the south central USA. I saw it as I was driving
Northwest on Rt. 63 towards Jonesboro, Arkansas. Unfortunately, I can
provide little reliable information on its angle, direction of travel, etc.
As I was driving in heavy traffic, I first thought that I was being passed
by a truck as a brilliant yellowish light appeared to my left. When I
realized that it was not a truck, I turned my head towards it and saw it
moving downwards and to the right before going to extinction within 20
degrees of the horizon (it was more or less towards the southwest of my
location). I never really had a chance to put it on my fovea as I was
driving at high speed in heavy traffic. However, I can say a few things:

1. It was much brighter than the full moon.
2. It probably did not go to extinction nearby, as it descended to a very
low angle.
3. I first thought that it might be fireworks, but the fact that it
illuminated cirrus clouds in that part of the sky
indicated otherwise. It took me a few seconds to sort that out,
however.
4. It was rather orange
5. My wife also got a very brief look at it when I shouted about it. She
thought that it fragmented before the
extinction. She also noted patches of orange light within the
fireball.
6. I did not crash the car.

Anyway, I hope that this thing produced some meteorites and that somebody
has the good luck to find them.

Sincerely,
Stephen McMann

2004-07-08 Thread Stephen McMann

Dear List,
I may have just posted this, but the post did not appear to go through correctly, and I made mistakes in my report. Please disregard the previous post
I saw the large fireball that was seen last night over parts of the southern USA.  I saw it as I was driving northwest on highway 63 towards Jonesboro Arkansas at 9:21pm. It was located more or less towards the SOUTHWEST and descended to a rather low angle above the horizen. I cannot provide very good info on location and direction as I never had a chance to put it on my fovea. Here is what I can say
I was driving at a high speed in heavy traffic when a brilliant light appeared to my LEFT.
I first thought that I was being passed by a truck
Then when I turned my head to look at it I briefly saw the fireball descend towards the horizen, moving downwards and towards the right. Then it went out within 20 degrees of the horizen
It was much brighter than the full moon and rather orangish in color.
For a few seconds I wondered whether it had been a meteoric fireball or fireworks. However, the fact that it had illuminated the cirrus clouds in that part of the sky made me quickly conclude that it was not fireworks.
My wife also saw it for an instant after I shouted about it. She noted that it appeared to fragment into many patches of orange light within a larger blob of whiter illumination
Hopefully it produced some meteorites, and someone will have the good luck to find them.

[meteorite-list] Large meterorite hit here, July Fourth!

2004-07-08 Thread Patrick
I live in Casselberry, Seminole County, Florida.

Whilst visiting my daughter on Sunday, July Fourth,
2004, and during a terrific lightning and tropical
rainstorm, the lightning had died down, when suddenly,
at about 8 p.m., a HUGE thundering sound rattled all
the windows! It had been preceeded by an extremely
bright light, that was golden instead of the usual
whitish glare that is typical of a lightning bolt.

A meteorite about the size of a VW (?) hit two miles
West of our location, on Dog Track Road, near Highway
17-92, in Longwood, Seminole County, Florida.

It hit in an open lot, but, the blast caused all of
the glass in surrounding homes to blast out of the
frames. Luckily, no one was injured!

Finally, this morning, July 8, 2004, WDBO AM radio
mentioned the 'big boom' on the Fourth of July, in
their traffic report at 07:35 a.m.!

We noted that lots of FBI agents had blocked off the
area, and that it wasn't until Tuesday, July 6th, that
NASA came in from the East Coast, and started poking
around with their radiometers, in their decon suits.

I cannot find any info anywhere on the Internet, local
news channels, or on Cable TV!

Doesn't anyone care? Last week, a meterorite the size
of a bowling ball crashed into a yard and THAT was all
over the news!

[meteorite-list] Ad -Chassigny

2004-07-08 Thread Dave Harris
Hello,
I seem to have acquired some nice grains of Chassigny (tiny, of course, but
very visible), and some of the larger ones even indicate the darkened
olivine melt (or chromite) as seen in the photomicrographs of the t/s.
If there is any one out who wants a micro (Bessey speck size I guess) I can
provide, for $25 incl. shipping a gel capped lump, and a pic of course if
you are interested.

email me offlist if you want a rare fragment of a Chassignite, the only
Chassignite!

thanks for your indulgance!

very much appreciated

dave

North La. callers report seeing bright light in the sky
07:30 AM CDT on Thursday, July 8, 2004
ASSOCIATED PRESS
SHREVEPORT - More than a dozen people reported seeing a bright light in the sky
Wednesday night and bombarded the National Weather Service in Shreveport with calls.
"We really don't know what it was," said Mike Berry, a meteorologist with the service.
"We can say it was not weather related. We're trying to confirm it was not a part of
an aircraft. We are just about confident it was not an aircraft."
Berry, who said he fielded about 20 calls from people asking about the mysterious
light, said meteorologists were watching radar focusing on storms in northern Texas
around the time of the incident and did not see anything out of the ordinary.
"We don't know what it was. The running theories right now are meteors or space
debris," Berry said.
A meteor or space debris would not be uncommon, said Monroe-based astronomer Stephen
Bailey.
"The Earth gets hit all the time," he said. "On rooftops, just around here, you can
find a large amount of meteor dust just about anytime of the year."
Bailey said he was outside, struggling to see Venus, and missed the event.
The Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office reported around five calls and forwarded them to
the weather office.
Meteorologists in Shreveport concluded the object would have been pretty high in the
atmosphere, judging from the location of callers.
"We have gotten calls as far north as Little Rock and as far south as Lufkin, Texas,
and then over to Monroe," Berry said.
Lydia Ellett said she saw the object while driving to Sicily Island from Ferriday.
"This thing was big," she said. "It was a huge greenish light; it seemed so close. It
was not like a shooting star that is gone as soon as you blink. It was slow-falling."

Cheers,

Randy in N.O.

[meteorite-list] North Texas Fireball.....

2004-07-08 Thread CMcdon0923
There was a very large fireball over North Texas last night around 21:30 CDT.

I don't have any more info, but it was caught on video by the dashboard camera of a
police car. Looks like if flared at least twice and there may have been some
fragmentation.

Unfortunately I missed it because I was bidding on some eBay items (ug).

Anyone have any more info

RE: [meteorite-list] Loaves and fishiness

2004-07-08 Thread mark ford

The point about the whole in the ice is a good, one although they had
been searching for many years.

To me the nickel content is the clue, surely you wouldn't get that ratio
of nickel 'accidentally'! modern furnace waste would have all sorts of
other metals in it including cobalt etc why would you have 30% Nickel?

My immediate thoughts after seeing the photos are - "yep, that's been
sand cast!" and unless they under went considerable cleaning and
restoration, they haven't been under water for 44 years... and the shape
is not characteristic of erosion by rusting.

Btw Does Shiro. Rust easily? Or would the high 30% Nickel 'per chance'
be enough to make it nice and stable. Hmm another coincidence!

(The area around the reservoir is very industrial)

Cheers,

Mark Ford
