If Your nantan have fresh iron inside, then its worth 150$/kg or more. But if its only piece of c.p, then its worth nothing. So Maybe it will be better to cut them in half or make small window to show Your customers that it is meteorite inside, not only weathered stone. -[ MARCIN CIMALA ]-[ I.M.C.A.#3667 ]- http://www.Meteoryt.net [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.PolandMET.com [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.Gao-Guenie.com GSM +48(607)535 195 [ Member of Polish Meteoritical Society ] __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
Re: [meteorite-list] the new brazilian meteorite
Hello List, Anne, Svend, Mike, Steve... Happy to learn the recent history of the remaining 10 kg of Santa Vitoria (potentially available to collectors). I am the happy owner of a 446 g full slice of Santa Vitoria, recently got from Blaine. Extraordinary and showy pattern. Price not so far from the ~$3.00 gram, as Mike anounced (the gram price is indeed more favorable for higher weights). I also got a small very nice thin slice in Ensisheim, from Hans Koser who got it from Svend. I am keeping both in collection as they show complementary characteristics. Don't have pictures on hand but here are the descriptions (from my catalog): SANTA VITORIA DO PALMAR (R.G. Sul, Brasil, L3)(S3/4W2), fell 1997 (?), found: 2003-04. 25x25x3 mm partly crusted part slice (weight ?) involving a 12x8 mm tan clast composed of (almost ?) pure olivine. Detailed history on Bühl's web site. Updated in MB # 91. TKM: [EMAIL PROTECTED] kg. Ref coll: HK 06/478 SANTA VITORIA DO PALMAR (R.G. The only mass that was ever available was about 10 kilos, the rest went to a local museum. Of that 10 kilos mass, some went to the Humboldt University for classification, and to Dr. Svend Buhl for his own collection. And I got some from him in Ensisheim. In Denver you saw what remained of the main mass, about 8 kilos. It was purchased by Blaine Reed, Robert Cucchiara and myself. Robert and Blaine chose to have their third sliced by Marlin Cilz, about 2 and 1/2 kilos each BEFORE cutting. I kept mine whole, so I now have the main mass of Santa Vitoria, 2238 grams. Plus what I had previously acquired. So I probably have more Santa Vitoria than anyone else. And I am not selling mine at $3/gram. It is a beautiful L3 with lots of colorful chondrules, of all types and shades. Go take a look at the pictures on my Catalog! [meteorite-list] Possible Micrometeoroid Hits Space Shuttle's Left Wing
http://www.spaceflightnow.com/shuttle/sts116/061211postmmt/ Engineers examine shuttle inspection imagery BY WILLIAM HARWOOD STORY WRITTEN FOR CBS NEWS SPACE PLACE USED WITH PERMISSION December 11, 2006 The Discovery astronauts used the space station's robot arm for a quick, unplanned inspection of the shuttle's left wing outboard leading edge panels based on sensor data indicating a possible micrometeoroid hit earlier today. John Shannon, chairman of NASA's Mission Management Team, said if the data reflected a real impact - and that remains to be seen - it was about 100 times below the threshold expected to cause any real damage. Television views from the station arm did not show any obvious signs of damage to the reinforced carbon carbon panels in question. The astronauts promptly moved on to using the shuttle's robot arm to pull a new solar array truss segment from Discovery's cargo bay for handoff to the station arm. The spacer segment will be attached to the end of the station's main truss during a spacewalk Tuesday. Shannon said data from a wing leading edge sensor, a post-Columbia system designed to detect possible impacts during launch or in orbit, recorded a 0.12-G hit around 5:30 a.m. Impacts registering 1 G root mean square are NASA's threshold for concern and that's 10 times less than the force required to cause serious damage. By that standard, the force recorded by the sensor on the left wing was some 100 times less than required to cause entry-critical damage. But Shannon said time was available in the crew's schedule to take a quick look and while I don't think anybody saw anything there, it was the right call to check it out. Of more interest, perhaps, is a photograph taken by the station astronauts earlier today during Discovery's final approach to the outpost. The picture shows an area of the shuttle's belly around one of the two propellant-line umbilical doors that close after the ship's external tank separates in space. The imagery shows a reddish, cellophane-like material extending from the door hinge line area and chipped heat-shield tiles just outboard of the door. As for the former, what the team thinks this is is some purge barrier material, said Shannon. It's a cellophane-type material that is put inside the external tank umbilical area and it keeps the (pre-launch) nitrogen purge in that area, it's basically like you're sealing it up, like a baggy, so when you get the N2 purge in there, it doesn't just go out in the atmosphere, it stays where you want it to stay. This stuff is ... like orange Saran wrap, orange cellophane. It'll burn off very quickly (during re-entry). The team is looking at it just to make sure the compression seal we get around (the door), that this wouldn't interfere with that at all. I think that's going to prove to be very true and it's not going to be an issue. But, of course, the team is still working it. As for the chipped tile just outboard of the door, it looks like we had some recirculating flow back in there (during ascent) and something was hitting those tiles and taking small chips out of them, Shannon said. Is this an issue? I don't know at this point. The team is working on it. I don't expect it to be a big deal. The thing we're always concerned about is if you had tile damage that goes across a seal. It doesn't look like it goes across a seal in any of these, it looks really shallow. But to be on the safe side, the imagery assessment team is going to meet at midnight tonight and determine if that's an area we'd like to look at some more, to go do a focussed inspection, or if they have sufficient data ... to clear that as no issue at all. As part of NASA's post-Columbia safety improvements, shuttle crews are now launched with repair materials capable of fixing relatively minor heat shield damage. But they would be asked to do that only if engineers believed the shuttle was at risk. The damage in question does not appear nearly that serious. Am I concerned about this? Shannon mused. Not really, not right now. But I refuse to short-circuit the team. I'm going to let them go off and do their analysis and we'll just take it a step at a time. Discovery docked with the international space station at 5:12 p.m. after a two-day orbital chase. After the impromptu wing inspection, astronaut Nicholas Patrick used Discovery's robot arm to pull the 4,110-pound P5 truss segment from the shuttle's cargo bay. He then handed the spacer segment off to astronaut Sunita Williams, operating the station's robot arm. Williams, a Navy helicopter pilot and diver, hitched a ride aboard Discovery to join the station's full time crew as a flight engineer. She replaces German astronaut Thomas Reiter, who was launched to the station in July. He will return to Earth aboard Discovery in Williams' place. The P5 truss segment will serve as a spacer between two huge sets of solar arrays on the left side of the station's main truss. One set of arrays, P4, was

[meteorite-list] [ebay] ending in less than 2 days
Hello all, I have a few more ebay auctions ending in less than 2 days. Close times start at 19:02 PST on Dec 13 - wednesday night. http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQsassZlaserprogramQQsbrsrtZd (as always scroll past the laser junk! ) In this batch I have the last bits of my new pairing to nwa 011/2400 (a few largeish bessy specs only at this point), my new angrite and R 3-6. I had a few people ask for more rare micros so I put up a decent piece of both nwa 2737 and 2727 - olivine gabro lunar and chassignite. A few more pieces of less than often seen Dhofars - 700, 485 and 007 (unusual diogenite, nice howardite and unusual cumulate eucrite / anom achondrite). Some more killer seymchan, a few other awsome OCs and another slice of my best LL3.10 (at least IMHO ;) ) If anyone has asked a question on these auctions or otherwise tried to reach me, my appologies in advance. To say I have been busy recently is like saying water is a little wet or that the surface of the sun is just a tad bit warm! TIA _ All-in-one security and maintenance for your PC. Re: [meteorite-list] Ad or Topic? All metal Nan-Tans
Hi Bob, I found your comment interesting because in reading the post to which you were referring, I saw it more as a discussion about the cost / value of large NanTans with only a back door invitation to anyone interested as opposed to an ad. I have wondered, myself about the market value of all-metal (as opposed to the earlier shale balls) Nan-Tans. I know at least 2 dealers who claim to sell LARGE Nan-Tans at substantial prices (between the prices brought by New Campos and Gibeon irons), but I have never seen a buyer spend $ anywhere close to that - except in the two ebay ads Bob provided. yet he seemed to be complaining about what I considered to be very substantial prices - ie $59/LB and $76/LB respectively - yet, he seemed to be complaining about this being a low price. I have 3 of these pieces in my auction (from 6.5LB to like 34 LB - see Lots 91, 92 93) with no minimum and will be very interested to see what they bring. I certainly can't imagine being disappointed if they brought between $59 and $76 per LB! So, other than comments about whether or not Bill's post was an ad or not, does anyone else have experience with the sale price of all metal Nan-Tans??? I think it is a fascinating subject - I just have never heard anything on it other than a couple of dealers who claim to get very high prices and several collectors who claim they aren't even worth $10/lb (this second price seems to be based on the old shale balls what wholesaled at Denver and Tucson for the several years when they were available - I haven't seen any for several years, now however) - those price differences are HUGE discrepancies, so, any others on the list have experiences with all metal Nan-Tan prices??? [meteorite-list] Meteorite Hunters Cash Treasures TV Show
Dear Friends and List Members: Greetings from sunny Tucson. Thanks to Ruben Garcia and Steve Arnold for posting info about our upcoming Travel Channel show. Filming at Brenham and Glorieta was a great experience and I was lucky enough to be in the company of some serious meteorite hunters: Steve Arnold, Mike Miller, Ruben Garcia, Sonny Clary, and Keith Jenkerson. Fine fellows all! : ) The show premieres one week from tonight on the Travel Channel -- Thursday, December 19 -- and repeats twice more during the same week. I've put together a brand-new section on my website all about the program, with showtimes, lots of behind-the-scenes photos, as well as a narrative about the making of the episode. Those were some of the most exciting days all year for us, and we hope you enjoy seeing the show as much as we enjoyed making it. http://www.aerolite.org/cash-and-treasures.htm Steve and I will also be appearing on PBS on January 3, 2007 in the pilot for a new science series called Wired Science. In this program we go back to Kansas and excavate a beautiful Brenham siderite in the middle of dust storm, and spend time with Steve and Phil's World Record Meteorite in a science museum in Wichita. For the same episode Wired Science also filmed our good friend Dr. Art Ehlmann, Curator of the Monnig Meteorite Gallery in Forth Worth, TX, and Jim Penix of Mineral Hunters in Dallas, TX. I will post showtimes for that when we have it. Tonight's two episodes (#3 and 4) of Cash Treasures will feature diamond hunting in Arkansasm and sunken treasure with Mel Fisher's outfit in Key West. Should be well worth seeing! 10 PM Eastern. Finally, for now, be sure to check out the new issue of Wired magazine. It should hit the stands any day. It will carry a feature about Steve and the Brenham, Kansas strewnfield. Don't touch that dial! Don't want you tuning in on the wrong day and watching some scary show about bounty hunters or anything. : ) I'll post a reminder next week. The Mel Fisher episode is tonight, Dec. 12. I gather the series is going to be released on DVD, so hopefully we can get copies to our overseas friends who would like to see it. One can't assume that, just because its a old black and white image, there is no copyright on it. Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Hunters Cash Treasures TV Show
Hi All, Geoff and Steve are both far too modest to say, but without them there really wouldn't have been a meteorite episode. Aside from the fact that Steve Arnold is very popular right now, both Geoff and Steve were very good on camera. While some of us (mostly me) were nervously stuttering and tripping over our own words, Geoff was providing interesting dialog. I was very impressed at how flawlessly he handled his co-hosting duties. Ruben Ruben Garcia Phoenix, Arizona http://www.mr-meteorite.com Any questions? [meteorite-list] Mars Takes a Fresh Pounding
http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/061211_st_mars_craters.html Mars Takes a Fresh Pounding By Tariq Malik space.com 12 December 2006 The planet Mars is a glutton for punishment. Scientists have found no less than 20 new craters etched into the red planet's surface from space rocks that pummeled Mars within the last seven years [image http://www.space.com/php/multimedia/imagedisplay/img_display.php?pic=061206_mgs_newcrater_02.jpgcap=One+of+20+new+craters+that+formed+within+the+last+seven+years+on+Mars.+Credit%3A+NASA%2FJPL%2FMSSS.+Click+to+enlarge.+]. If you were to live on Mars for about 20 years, you would live close enough to one of these events to hear it, said researchers Michael Malin, who led the study. So there'd be a big boom and you'd know there was an impact crater. Malin, chief scientist at San Diego, California's Malin Space Science Systems, and his team used the Mars Orbiter Camera aboard NASA's now silent Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) to photograph about 30 percent of the planet between January and May this year. They compared the new images with photographs taken by MGS during earlier surveys to find new impact sites. In the same study, researchers found evidence that liquid water may have flowed out of martian gullies within the last five to seven years [images http://www.space.com/php/multimedia/imagedisplay/img_display.php?pic=061206_mars_gullies_02.jpgcap=The+floor+and+banks+of+a+gully+on+the+northwest+wall+of+a+crater+in+Terra+Sirenium+changed+between+December+2001+and+April+2005+due+to+a+distinct+light-toned+material+that+flowed+down+the+slope+and+formed+a+deposit+%28top%29.+The+same+change+occurred+in+a+crater+in+the+Centauri+Montes+region+%28bottom%29.+Credit%3A+Science.+Click+to+enlarge.]. It was just amazing that we could even do that, said Kenneth Edgett, a Malin Space Science Systems researcher who spotted the first of the new craters, told SPACE.com. And it was really a whirlwind from that first one all the through the 20th. Malin said that it was by chance Edgett spotted an image with a new crater and recalled a similar view taken years earlier by the MGS orbiter. Their subsequent survey found the new craters, which range in diameter from seven feet (two meters) to 486 feet (148 meters), and an average impact rate of about 12 per year. A few months after Malin and his team performed their survey, the MGS probe went silent and is thought to be lost after 10 years of spaceflight. The research is detailed in the most recent issue of the journal Science, and it validated crater impact models of Mars that until now were based solely on theory, Malin said. The new craters also suggest a potential hazard for future astronaut explorers on long-duration missions to the red planet, he added. There is a hazard, it's probably a low hazard, Malin said. But it's one we need to think about in terms of these objects hitting Mars at a fairly substantial rate. __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] The 2006 Geminid Meteor Shower
http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2006/12dec_geminids.htm The 2006 Geminid Meteor Shower NASA Science News December 12, 2006 Dec. 12 , 2006: The best meteor shower of the year peaks this week on Dec. 13th and 14th. It's the Geminid meteor shower, says Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office in Huntsville, Alabama. Start watching on Wednesday evening, Dec. 13th, around 9 p.m. local time, he advises. The display will start small but grow in intensity as the night wears on. By Thursday morning, Dec. 14th, people in dark, rural areas could see one or two meteors every minute. The source of the Geminids is a mysterious object named 3200 Phaethon. No one can decide what it is, says Cooke. The mystery, properly told, begins in the 19th century: Before the mid-1800s there were no Geminids, or at least not enough to attract attention. The first Geminids appeared suddenly in 1862, surprising onlookers who saw dozens of meteors shoot out of the constellation Gemini. (That's how the shower gets its name, the Geminids.) Astronomers immediately began looking for a comet. Meteor showers result from debris that boils off a comet when it passes close to the Sun. When Earth passes through the debris, we see a meteor shower. For more than a hundred years astronomers searched in vain for the parent comet. Finally, in 1983, NASA's Infra-Red Astronomy Satellite (IRAS) spotted something. It was several kilometers wide and moved in about the same orbit as the Geminid meteoroids. Scientists named it 3200 Phaethon. Just one problem: Meteor showers are supposed to come from comets, but 3200 Phaethon seems to be an asteroid. It is rocky (not icy, like a comet) and has no obvious tail. Officially, 3200 Phaethon is catalogued as a PHA - a potentially hazardous asteroid whose path misses Earth's orbit by only 2 million miles. If 3200 Phaethon is truly an asteroid, with no tail, how did it produce the Geminids? Maybe it bumped up against another asteroid, offers Cooke. A collision could have created a cloud of dust and rock that follows Phaethon around in its orbit. This jibes with studies of Geminid fireballs. Some astronomers have studied the brightest Geminid meteors and concluded that the underlying debris must be rocky. Density estimates range from 1 to 3 g/cm3. That's much denser than flakes of comet dust (0.3 g/cm3), but close to the density of rock (3 g/cm3). So, are the Geminids an asteroid shower? Cooke isn't convinced. 3200 Phaethon might be a comet after all--an extinct comet, he says. The object's orbit carries it even closer to the Sun than Mercury. Extreme solar heat could've boiled away all of Phaethon's ice long ago, leaving behind this rocky skeleton that merely looks like an asteroid. In short, no one knows. It's a mystery to savor under the stars - the shooting stars - this Thursday morning. __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Re: [meteorite-list] Bandwidth - Hotlink Protection on cPanel Pro
Hi Darren and List, For those of us with high traffic sites bandwidth can definitely be an issue. We pay monthly fees based upon options which include how much monthly traffic we are allowed. If we go over that amount we have to pay for that excess traffic. Today's Hosting Plans are much more affordable that they used to be. There were times in the past like when ALH 84001 hit the news that we paid some hefty fees for the huge jump in traffic. 20 MB should work fine for you and if not your ISP will send you a nice little email notification. 20MB won't last long for a higher traffic sites. Our meteorite.com site averages 1000 unique visits and 200 MB of traffic daily http://www.meteorite.com/me_stats.jpg On meteorite-times we average over 600 visits and close to 500 MB of traffic daily with a peak day of over 1 GB of traffic. http://www.meteorite.com/mt_stats.jpg For those of you who's Hosting Company supplies cPanel Pro you may have Hotlink Protection Below is some documentation HotLink protection prevents other websites from directly linking to files (as specified below) on your website. Other sites will still be able to link to any file type that you don't specify below (ie. html files). An example of hotlinking would be using a img tag to display an image from your site from somewhere else on the net. The end result is that the other site is stealing your bandwidth.
