[meteorite-list] Looking for the address of Steve Arnold (Chicago)

2007-05-08 Thread Göran Axelsson
Hi List!

Sorry list to take a private matter to the list, but I'm starting to run
out of options and I don't want to file a dispute with Ebay if it can be
avoided.

Maybe my mail is blocked somewhere, I hope this way to contact Steve
will work.

I bought a 503 gram slice of nwa 869 from Steve but the address filed
with Ebay (a post box) was wrong and my letter with the payment bounced.
After the money returned to me Steve has not answered any of my
messages. I've tried both email and via Ebay message system.
What I need is the real address of Steve so I can send the payment.

(
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemih=019viewitem=item=290101251764

Steve, if you see this, please answer my mail.

[meteorite-list] Greensburg, Kansas Update 05-07-07

2007-05-08 Thread MARK BOSTICK

Hello everyone,

First, I would like to thank those that have contributed to the joint effort

chime in, and while I understand the fund raiser is still in it's first
footsteps, I hope we hear from you soon.

I am tiredit is past 3:30 a.m., and I have yet to take in everything
from the last day, but as you know the saying Time and tide waits on no

In case the hopefully linked photos do not seem workdue to length, you
can check out the images in my photobucket gallery.

Today was the first day they let residents back into Greensburg since the
tornado Friday. In many ways, this was day one of recovery.

Greensburg resident and world famous meteorite hunter, Steve Brenham
Arnold arrived in town around 5 p.m., just a hour before the 6 p.m. curfew.
This was only accomplished by making great time into Kansas from his home in
Arkansas. Steve brought with him into Kiowa County, his youngest daughter
Kelsey, and a certain person from Wichita, Kansas. (That would be me.)

After making our way through a couple road stops, as they were directing
traffic completely around the town, we arrived at the real road stop,
complete with a dozen armed National Guardsmen...and a couple attack
helicopters peacefully setting in the background.

I was using Steve's camcorder on the scene while the only Guardsman talking
wrote on our windshield the address we were going to, and the number of
occupants in the yellow Hummer in some type of neon green marker. We were
given directions to only go to the resident.

Steve's house was in the least hit part of town, which before we arrived was
a relief to him. The thought of freely renting the place out to someone in
need, disappeared when we arrived.

The previous days, rescue workers had sanctioned off the town, and marked
the searched homes with paint.Steve got this marking...

[meteorite-list] Titanium content

2007-05-08 Thread Francis Graham
Yes, Randy is correct about titanium content varying
around the Moon.
What are the petrological reasons why this varies?
In southeast Pennsylvania, we have high titanium
diabase intrusions (The York Haven intrusion) and
low titanium diabase intrusions in highly folded and
complex rocks which date from the precambrian. The
lunar variation does not have the same cause, I am
sure. But what are some of the ideas that account for
the lunar variation?

[meteorite-list] Wired mention of tornado and SA

2007-05-08 Thread Darren Garrison
http://blog.wired.com/wiredscience/2007/05/what_happened_t.html

What Happened to Greensburg
Half a year ago, Wired ran a story about a guy who'd built a makeshift metal
detector to hunt for meteorites under the corn and wheat fields of southwestern
Kansas. Steve Arnold wasn't a Kansan, but he took a house in Greensburg—heart of
Kiowa county—to be near the fields that, thousands of years ago, were the site
of the Brenham meteor fall. Greensburg already had, as a roadside attraction, a
1,000-pound specimen of pallasite meteorite, the largest ever found in the US,
until Arnold found a bigger rock.

When we did the Wired Science TV show pilot we went to Greensburg to talk to
Arnold. We even found another rock—ours was only about a 50-pounder, on sale now
for $12,000. The town was a perfectly nice place. Lots of boarded-up stores on
the main drag, just like you find in any town in the middle of the country these
days. Lots of open space. Not too many places to get a meal. Trim little houses.

And now Greensburg is basically gone.

On Saturday, a tornado more than half a mile wide ripped through town, with
winds more than 200 miles per hour. That's an F-5, for you stormwatchers. There
isn't much left.

Wired's photo editor, Zana Woods, pinged Steve Arnold. Turns out he's okay; he
wasn't in town. His house is as ripped up as the rest of the place.

I've never been anywhere that isn't there anymore. I mean, the people of
Greensburg will rebuild. The town as an idea is still there even if the physical
structures are now, as one news report had it, largely reduced to 30-foot-high
piles of rubble. The 1,000-pound pallasite at the Big Well is gone, apparently.
No one knows where.

We build our cities out of things, objects—wood and plaster, mostly. Some metal.
And sometimes nature pulls all those things apart, reveals their guts.

I was in Greensburg for a night. That's it. We didn't even stay in town for
dinner. But all of us at Wired and Wired Science are thinking about the
residents there. Our hearts go out to them because, even if we can't know what
it feels like to lose every concrete thing that says home, we know a little
about what it means to remember things that live only in time but no longer in
space. It's hard enough to remember a world that no longer exists—as all of us
do: you can't go home again. But to have that world ripped away by force, all of
a sudden? Awful.

We wish them well as they rebuild.

[meteorite-list] Bassikounou meteorite fall

2007-05-08 Thread info
Dear list,

widely unnoticed by the meteoritic community on October 12, 2006 at 04:00 hrs a
spectacular meteorite shower fell at the village of Bassikounou in southeast
Mauretania. Meanwhile the petrographic and mineralogic analysis of the
meteoritic material collected has been completed at the University of Bern,
Switzerland. The new fall has been submitted by B. Hofmann to the NomCom of
the Meteoritical Society.

Despite the fact that the event caused a considerable sensation in the
Mauretanian media and public, only few details of this event came to light at
present. This may partly be due to the fact that the media in the capital
Nouakchott as well as the local mineral dealers were convinced until February
2007, that only a single mass fell at Bassikounou.

Due to the extreme remoteness of the fall area it took months until the stones
that had been collected since the morning after the fall found their way to
people who could value their importance. However no thorough attempts have been
made so far, to investigate the circumstances of the fall.

With the aid of a local journalist, local authorities and experts from the
European Fireball Network my colleague Matthias Baermann and I are currently
trying to draw a picture of what exactly happened. We succeeded in collecting
numerous photos from the strewnfield, eye witness reports as well as newspaper
articles and press releases covering the event. Work on a catalogue of the
meteoritic masses collected so far is under progress as well. We are positive
to publish our results shortly before the Ensisheim Fair on June 15.

Including the six masses we were able to acquire we currently count a TKW of ~
42kg. Two Bassikounou masses are pictured on our page at:

www.niger-meteorite-recon.de/en/meteoriten_verkauf.htm

Because we intend the Bassikounou catalogue to describe as much single masses
as possible in detail we kindly offer those among you, that have purchased
Bassikounou, to send us a factsheet of your masses including weight, number of
surfaces, taxonomic description and special features as well as the name of the
finder or seller. If we have your agreement we will include the name of the
current owner in the catalogue.

Beside intelligence on the meteoritic individuals and fragments we are asking
for further information on the event itself. Especially observations and
descriptions of the fireball, sound phenomena and shock wave are welcome, any
additional piece of information counts. Please indicate your sources in case of
second hand information.

Thank you for supporting this endeavor

Hello All,

One such lunar high-titanium area was visited by the Apollo 17 astronauts in the
Taurus Littrow Valley (Mare Serenitatis) where the astronauts took a core sample
in an orange patch of soil on the rim of the 120 m diameter impact crater
Shorty.

The core sample is unique because it is composed completely of volcanic beads
with
only a minor lithic component in the top 8 cm. The volcanic beads consist of
high-Ti
orange glasses (9 wt% TiO2) and their crystallized equivalents (black beads).

Hello Everyone

Well, where do I start. I can't start at the beginning because I don't
really remember much of it. Suffice it to say that I am home now. My
recovery is nowhere complete as I need 2-3 more surgeries in a few months.
I am ambulatory with the aid of a walker and I literally had to learn to
walk, batch, lift, etc all over again. I can walk a few feet unaided but
I will have to curtail that activity a bit because I fell last night
trying to change my shirt and the incident incurred the wrath of my wife!

I have four drainage bags either attached to or hanging from my abdomen.
Yuck! I have other injuries as well which will take up to a year to heal.

Well enough about me. Words cannot adequately express the sincere
appreciation I have for your emails, donation of money and meteorites and
general hang-in-there support

and encouragement.

I will try to answer individual emails as my tired body will allow. I
lost 25-30 lbs. while in the hospital and I get exhausted easily, I have
to rest now but I wanted you all to know how much I appreciate all you
have done for me and my family.

Let me say first off that i'm not looking for a

 post back on this subject.

I have not stolen meteorites from anyone, Mike - I
 HAVE however simply
dropped off the face of the meteorite world after
 Tucson. Ironically enough
Mike you are part of the reason for me doing this
 when you told me Habibi

I have been increasingly frustrated with politics,
 untruths and other crap
in the meteorite community as of late. Things all
 came to a head after
tucson when I would hear from Mr. Y that Mr. X was
 saying something bad
about me and then hearing from someone else that Mr.
 Y was telling everyone
not to sell to me. Some people have been claiming
 that prices I'm being
quoted are horribly inflated - others have said my
 best sources are out to
pork me. Those who know me know that I have spent
 some time and effort
building up a fairly descent collection and at this
 point I just simply dont
know what to do anymore, or who I can trust.

I was (only halfway) joking when I talked to Blaine

he was porking me too I
would just put my entire collection up on ebay in a

So long story short. I'm not dead. I'm not planning
 on running off with a
bunch of space rocks and hoarding them all to
 myself. Ive just been
frustrated - and probably in retrospect didn't
 handle the situation in the
best way possible. Ive been talking with some close
 friends as of late with
regards to what they think I should do and if I have
 something outstanding
with you I will take care of it shortly.

Meteorites has first and foremost been a passion of
mine. ever since i was a
kid I wanted to be an astronaut. When I realize that
 wasn't a likely job
prospect I turned to meteorites to bring a little
bit of space down to earth
to me. Unfortunatly the commercial side of
 meteorites and all the
backstabbing and other BS that goes along with it
has taken a bit of the
magic out of this collectors passion.

[meteorite-list] Comment on M. Blood's Met. Market Trends 05-07

2007-05-08 Thread David Weir

Hello Michael,

The Meteorite Collectors Price Guide, by David Weir, to which you refer
in your recent Meteorite Times article (just after Kevin's
contribution), was compiled by me for about 5 years, up until January
2001, the beginning of the new millennium, when I quit revising it. At
that time I allowed Doug (Meteorite Express) to work on it at his
pleasure and I removed its link from my website. He continued to update
it (mostly the date) in a very minor way. You're correct, it's quite
obsolete. At the time I quit revising it, the NWA boom had led to widely
varying, abnormal market conditions, almost impossible to adequately
monitor, and the price range listed had grown so wide that no meaningful
information could be derived from it any longer.

My interest in recording prices was for my collection goals just as it
was for Kevin and probably Thomas and others, but this was at a time
when the number of dealers could be counted on both hands and ANY
meteorite offered for sale was a great occasion. A large percentage of
meteorite types were unavailable or unknown. Conversely, at the present
time every collector is a dealer (primary, secondary, tertiary, etc.),
ebay lists dozens of pages of meteorites of every variety for auction,
Google searches are magical, and lunar and martian stones, along with
samples from the very rarest of groups, are relatively easy to acquire.
My Availability Code -- 1) Good Luck!, 2) Here, There, 3) Everywhere
-- would now be all 2's and 3's.

I doubt if any price guide is able to provide a realistic and timely
picture of the current market price ranges; in fact, I was often told
this about my own price guide, which was modeled after Philip Bagnall's
efforts in his informative book, by some dealers (by yourself too as I
recall, and I even included a median price). I felt my efforts were
still worthwhile at the time, and it provided me with the information I
needed to have -- the difference between a good price and a bad price --
at my fingertips.

Re: [meteorite-list] Looking for STAN TURECKI - Anybody live nearTampa?

2007-05-08 Thread Jim Strope

I am going to have to set the record straight on this one Stan.

Mike and I have been very restrained concerning our sale of the silicated
iron slice to you, last fall. We have NOT been out there spreading rumors
about you. However, I HAVE received numerous emails from other dealers
asking if I have had problems with you paying. I have been very reserved
and careful how I answer these emails and I am sure Mike has been as well
since we jointly owned the meteorite that we sold you.

Keep in mind that it is YOU that has not responded to any email or telephone
messages by Me or Mike since the Tucson show. It should be extremely simple
to solvesettle up your debt or return the slice.

I am encouraged by your statement if I have something outstanding with you
I will take care of it shortly.

Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Looking for STAN TURECKI - Anybody live

Date: Tue, 08 May 2007 21:59:41 +

I was recently emailed this thread by a friend and though I should
respond.

Let me say first off that i'm not looking for a fight or to turn this into
more drama on the list. I'm going to say my peace once and once only and
not post back on this subject.

I have not stolen meteorites from anyone, Mike - I HAVE however simply
dropped off the face of the meteorite world after Tucson. Ironically
enough Mike you are part of the reason for me doing this when you told me
Habibi and Aaronson are out to screw me over.

I have been increasingly frustrated with politics, untruths and other crap
in the meteorite community as of late. Things all came to a head after
tucson when I would hear from Mr. Y that Mr. X was saying something bad
about me and then hearing from someone else that Mr. Y was telling
everyone not to sell to me. Some people have been claiming that prices I'm
being quoted are horribly inflated - others have said my best sources are
out to pork me. Those who know me know that I have spent some time and
effort building up a fairly descent collection and at this point I just
simply dont know what to do anymore, or who I can trust.

I was (only halfway) joking when I talked to Blaine Reed on the phone the
other day when I told him that if I found out that he was porking me too I
would just put my entire collection up on ebay in a single no reserve
sale. (I've known Blaine since I was about 13). No worries though Blaine
is a trustworthy guy.

So long story short. I'm not dead. I'm not planning on running off with a
bunch of space rocks and hoarding them all to myself. Ive just been
frustrated - and probably in retrospect didn't handle the situation in the
best way possible. Ive been talking with some close friends as of late
with regards to what they think I should do and if I have something
outstanding with you I will take care of it shortly.

Meteorites has first and foremost been a passion of mine. ever since i was
a kid I wanted to be an astronaut. When I realize that wasn't a likely job
prospect I turned to meteorites to bring a little bit of space down to
earth to me. Unfortunatly the commercial side of meteorites and all the
backstabbing and other BS that goes along with it has taken a bit of the
magic out of this collectors passion.

Humm... I don't think that detector that was destroyed was the one that
Stockwell actually used. He used one that was like a wheelbarrow. In
fact, I know one that has the actual detector that Stockwell used to
find this meteorite. I saw the unit with my own eyes. It is quite
amazing, completely hand made, and powered with batteries and tubes.
But I won't reveal the owner's name unless he does so himself.

2007-05-08 Thread Michael Farmer
Ok, so because I said the Moroccans ripped you off,
you then decided that was an excuse not to pay me or
all the other people you owe money too? Is it just me
is this the most BULLSHIT excuse I have ever heard!
So if I said that (and although I don't recall), then
I did not mention any names, so for you to then insert
the names is wrong.
I just want my money, and I have sent you at least 30
emails and phone messages since October, and you lied
to me many times, saying the checks were returned,
they were in the mail, they were lost etc.
So again, why would anything I said about Moroccans
translate into a valid reason for you to refuse to
answer or pay for the meteorite slice you have had
possesion of for the last nearly 8 months?
Pay me and we can consider the case closed.
This would never have been mde public but for your
refusal to answer emails and phone calls, an even
questions through ebay so I know you saw them.

Stan, why bring me into this? I never told you
 Habibi
or Aaronson were screwing you? When might I have
told you this? What I do know, is that when you
 take
something in October, and refuse to pay until May,
 and
refuse to answer phone calls, or emails, then you
 are
not paying for the item, and refusal to pay for
 what
 you buy means theft.
I will be pleased when you pay for the slice, that
will take care of some unfinished business, which
allows me to take care of my own bills.
 Michael Farmer
But to blame me for your own lack of respect for
 others, that is pitiful.

ok i PROMISE this will be my last post on the
 subject.

you have been bilked out of hundreds of thousands
of $ by the morrocians, I
would think that you could at least pay me

That was the voice mail you left me about the slice
 not too long after
 tucson.

If you know what kind of deals I'm getting and that
 i'm getting porked in
them then you would darn well know that the ONLY
 moroccains I buy from Aziz
Habbibi and Adan Aaronson. Period. Two guys who I
 had considered my best
sources till you said what you did.

Since that time I have hurd all sorts of conflicting
 BS back and forth. If
you werent serious about what you said then you
 shouldnt have said it -
because I took the statement to be true when I
 listened to it.

[meteorite-list] Greensburg Charity Meteorite Raffle

2007-05-08 Thread Notkin

Dear Listees:

Here are preliminary details regarding the Greensburg, KS charity
raffle:

http://www.aerolite.org/events/greensburg-fundraiser.htm

And here are the prizes we have on offer so far. Thank you to everyone
who has already given:

http://www.aerolite.org/events/greensburg-raffle.htm

We'd be very delighted to receive more donations of meteorites or
meteorite-related prizes -- large or small. That's my department. Email
me photos and specs, or just mail me the specimen(s). I'll take photos
for you and add them to the website. Please state how you would like
your name/company name to appear (as donor).

Greensburg is one of the most famous meteorite towns in the world. If
you've ever enjoyed looking at a Brenham pallasite; reading Space
Rocks and Buffalo Grass; watching the Cash Treasures, or Wired
Science shows; or any of Steve's many TV news appearances, now would
be a great time to say thanks to the town that helped make those
experiences possible.

Rafffle tickets are $10 each and you can buy as many as you like. To
purchase, please email our friend Maria Haas at: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

. . . or you can just PayPal funds to her. Her email address is the
same as her PayPal account. She is very well experienced with
fundraisers and you can trust her with your $$ : )

As mentioned earlier, our primary goal is to get money up to Greensburg
NOW to help some of those people who have lost their homes and
belongings. Bear with us, and we'll provide details of where and when
the charity raffle will take place later on. So, please chip in
whatever you can today. I hear from Maria that we already have more
than $1,000 in hand and/or pledged, and about another $1,000 worth in
raffle prizes.

Mark Bostick and Steve Arnold are on the ground in KS figuring out the
best way to get funds to people who need help the most. I'm sure
they'll post reports when they can.

We'll be adding more material to the website shortly, including
personal memories and photos of Greensburg. Please contact me off-List
if you'd like to contribute something to that project.

Thanks and regards,

Geoff N.
