Thanks for the link.

I hope the NASA-trained expert they interviewed isn't the one who
came up with re-entry erosion in reference to fusion crust.

The photo is not working in the link I tried. But without seeing it,
the description sounds dubious and I think the driver/finder is
engaging in wishful thinking.

[meteorite-list] AD - Martian Meteorite Retro Art Display - Less than 4 hours remaining - no reserve, low bidding!

2010-04-10 Thread Galactic Stone Ironworks
Greetings Collectors and Listees

I have a Martian meteorite display closing on eBay in less than 4
hours. The bidding is still very tame at less than $5, so there is
the potential for a bargain here. Market prices on Martians has been
dropping lately, and anyone who follows the bidding on eBay has surely
noticed this. So I put a nice little polished micro-slice (sliced
off from a macro slice) of DaG 476 shergottite in a Riker box display
with a laser-printed reproduction of a vintage sci-fi theme. This is
the last planetary display I will be selling on eBay - the remainder
of my stock is only available through my website.

DaG 476 Mars Rock auction link -

Website link - http://www.galactic-stone.com

Don't forget that all List members (you!) get a 20% discount on all
specimens in my store. Just use the coupon code metlist at checkout
to get the discount. (minimum order $10)

Thanks for looking, happy hunting, and have a great weekend. :)

So basically, like the asteroid collision in the asteroid belt a while

happens, hence one source of the meteorites we love so much. ;)

Oh yeah one more closing thought... That comet that just smashed the

this raises another question. How big was it?

Perhaps the most accurate answer to your question is neither. ;-)
Kreutz comets are not new (e.g. in the sense of having just burst
on the scene in the last few years). But they haven't been around
for millennia either. The Kreutz family of sungrazers have been
putting on their show for almost a thousand years, and include the
Great Comets of 1843 and 1882, as well as Comet Ikeya-Seki in 1965.
They all trace their lineage to a single progenitor comet, which
may have been the Great Comet of 1106. You can read more about the
family here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kreutz_Sungrazers

I discovered my first Kreutz comet in 1992 -- SOHO comet #445.
My most recent Kreutz comet was SOHO #1798 (my 84th Kreutz), which
I found in January of this year. So as you can see, SOHO has
discovered over 1300 comets in the last 8 years, most of them
members of the Kreutz family).

Cheers,
Rob

P.S. Most Kreutz comets do not actually hit the sun. Their
perihelion distances are typically around 0.005 a.u. (748,000 km),
which is about 7% more than the sun's radius.

While Kreutz sungrazers constitute a recent population in geological terms,
it seems highly likely that there have always been sungrazer subpopulations.
You might go a few thousand years with low activity, and a few thousand with
higher activity. And within those periods there will be statistical
fluctuations as well as actual density fluctuations.

And of course, there will always be sungrazers that aren't part of any
subpopulation- sporadics, if you will. (I don't think it has been confirmed
that this was a Kreutz comet, although it seems most likely.)

Re: [meteorite-list] Sun Eats Another Comet

2010-04-10 Thread Meteorites USA

Hi Rob, Thanks...

;) Point taken... Your point about the sungrazers is a perfect example
of what I'm referring to. I was being more general in my question about
comets. Specifically the Kreutz comets couldn't be the first (maybe
first observed), nor the last to be obliterated by the Sun. The term
smashed into was not accurate, but artistic license. (I can say that
since I'm not a scientist) ;) Certain freedoms...

1000 years is a long time to humans, but cosmologically speaking it's
not even a blink of an eye. Could we deduce that given the number of
comets (or sungrazers) that have been discovered and observed in the
past, could we apply this number going backwards in time and figure the
number of comets that have been swallowed up by the Sun, or is there
just not enough data?

Congrats on your Kreutz comet discoveries!!! Awesome!

Oh yeah, how big are these comets, and how come we didn't see them
before they were gobbled up?

Regards,
Eric

Hi All,

I agree completely. The best reasoning is that it hardly seems likely that
a burst of sungrazers would occur at precisely the time (in geologic terms)
that we have developed the technology to detect them. The more realistic
conclusion to draw is that episodes of such activity are the rule rather
than the exception.

Consider, also, that the Kreutz family isn't the only sungrazing comet
family currently making appearances. There are also the Kracht, Meyer
and Marsden groups.

Chris added: And of course, there will always be sungrazers that aren't

Quite so -- SOHO has observed dozens of non-group sungrazers over the
last 13 years.

(I don't think it has been confirmed that this was a Kreutz comet,
 although it seems most likely.)

In this case, it was definitely a Kreutz. Correct location and direction
of motion in the SOHO LASCO fields of view, as well as the correct
velocity.

Re: [meteorite-list] Car(s) Srtuck by Meteor/ite, again

2010-04-10 Thread Joe Kerchner
I believe my vehicle was struck by 2 small meteorites yesterday. I was
driving North on interstate 39. I heard a big Bang, bang.. Then saw white dust
where the 2 pieces hit, one cracked the windshield and left a little black mark
and the other just left some white/grey powder/dust. I p8ulled over and tried
to wipe them off and could not get it off. I am almost positive they were
meteorites. There were no other vehicles near me, I was over a half mile from
an overpass. They had to come from above. I did not hear any sonic boom or see
any meteor. I plan on going back the the spot to see if I can find anything in
the area, but I'm sure the pieces that hit my Durango got smashed to
smithereens, maybe I will b able to find another piece if another piece
actually landed.
I am not claiming these were meteorites, but I can not think of anything
else it could have been.
I was not going to post it, because I figured people would think I'm crazy, but
after seeing this thread, I figured I had to. The weird thing is that it
happened to the other guy and me a day a part. very unusual. But I know an iron
did not him my car, what ever it was left a powdery residue.

 Best Wishes,
Joe Kerchner

Re: [meteorite-list] AD/web site update Campo, Brenham, Glorieta Damascus knife and more.

2010-04-10 Thread Galactic Stone Ironworks
Hi Mike and List,

I think I speak for many others on the List when I say that your
specimens and preparation are top notch. I have spent the last two
days slicing and polishing some stony chondrites, and it's been a lot
of work - it's been fun, and I wouldn't trade it for anything else,
but it's still a lot of work. It's a labor of love. When I think
about how much work goes into cutting, polishing, and preparing irons,
it makes me wince because I know how labor intensive irons are. And
not only the labor, but the wear and tear on saw blades, diamond
wheels, etchant, and the other expenses. Frankly, I don't fool with
irons because of the high learning curve and consumption of materials.
I don't see how some of you guys who specialize in irons can make any
profit. Keep up the good work. Those knives look awesome. Now if I
can just convince the wife that I *need* one LOL

Best regards and happy huntings,

MikeG

Re: [meteorite-list] AD/web site update Campo, Brenham, Glorieta Damascus knife and more.

2010-04-10 Thread Rob Wesel

I second Mike G's sentiment regarding Mike M's preparation.

As most of you know, Mike has been the one cutting the 200 gram Brenham I am
selling slices of. With every shipment I am gobsmacked at how well they are
prepared in terms of parallel cuts, mirror polish, etching, and
preservation. I had the opportunity to visit his home, the location of a
meteorite cutting outfit that is, simply put, massive. In addition to all
the saws there were the control pieces, small slices prepared different ways
with notes following each piece through time, inspected routinely. And then
there are pieces Miller recently sent out for free to the four corners, the
worlds most hostile environments for iron slices, so he could further
perfect the process.

Progress has come a long way in a short time largely due to Mike and a few
relentless others like him.
