Wow... That is so far off base from my comments that I am in shock that you would think that. In the future, should you feel I have said something that offended you, please address me PRIVATELY to make sure you even know what I am commenting on. I WAS NOT even talking about your email or did I even see it! Your actions here is another example of you over reacting in such a manner that has driven Tom Phillips from this list. In doing research on meteorites, I came across a documented history of you being very rude and unprofessional on this list, dating back to an incident between you and Mike Farmer over park forest material... I know I have had a few foot in mouth moments, but mine was due to inexperience... what is your excuse? Sorry to bring this up, but since you chose to address me publicly on this, I feel a reply is needed. Should you wish to discuss this misunderstanding in private, I would welcome an email from you to clear the air. Re: [meteorite-list] Martian Meteorites
Hi there, Well Phil, we simply don't know it - aaand that's why we have to look for it! I see also a nice side-effect in the press conference by NASA - some advertizing, always necessary to get the budgets passed. Remember - the announcement of the supposed fossil remnants in ALH84001, even by president Clinton - when did it take place? And when started the great Martian renaissance with all these incredible successful orbiters and rovers? And if you keep in mind, that sample-return-mission projected, if it will be realized, will be after the ISS and the space shuttle missions, the most expensive mission, the most costly planetary space-probe ever. Hopefully it will be done. And until then, we have to take potluck with the Martian meteorites we have already. hi Greg Greg, could you please reconcile your differences off-list? Greg H. - I guess Greg C. simply didn't get the joke, because he isn't aware of the funny story of Haag, Zagami and ALH84001. And Greg C. I know that you sometimes support the notion, that we're all in meteorites only for the money. Though the meteorite prices are not endangered by new scientific recoveries. Much more they are endangered, because still some meteoricists and some clerks haven't recognized yet the direct correlation of find rates/availability of meteorites and the legal situation in the countries, they were and shall be found. You can observe already now the step-back and the regress in newly found material due to always new restrictions. Check the bulletins, what for a decline we have the very last 3 years in newly recovered unpaired planetaries. And regarding especially the Martians, I'm not sure how long you're in meteorites, but they already doubled, tripled, quadrupled in price during the last 4 years, because of that. And sooner or later, the collectors, hunters and dealers won't know anymore, how they still should supply the universities and museums further, with affordable, but rare and scientifically significant new materials. And really the least university institutes are in such a likewise comfortable financial situation like e.g. the Smithsonian or London - but nevertheless are urgently wanting to work on such materials. And we all agree, the more scientists have the opportunity to do their research on a meteorite - the better. So Greg C. - you have to appeal with your worries not to Jim or Greg H., but to such people like Dr.Bevan, the successor of al Kathiri, Dr.Chennaoui, Dr.Zuccolotto, Dr.Planche, (or in your country, those who initiated these new BLM-land restrictions) and others, who seem to actively support the ban of private involvement and with that the ban of new meteoritic recoveries.. ..and thus tossing not only the national meteorite research of their countries into a crisis, but global meteoritics too. Thus, in the end they are restricting the freedom of research. They urgently need some enlightenment about that, what they're doing and the consequences, which they are not able to see. I really hope, that this topic will be on the agenda at the next MetSoc meeting in Perth. Because today we have already very often the situation, that the important new recoveries of special meteorites are gladly welcome by all meteorite researchers, but on the other hand and in the same breath some scientists, not so seldom even some, who work on these very meteorites or use the results of the work on these meteorites done by colleagues, claim these very finds to be products of criminal activities and call the finders and those persons involved to bring the stones into the labs and institutional collections criminals. If we don't manage to resolve this pervert schizophrenia - and that immediately - then the meteorite research in that extent and quality, we were used to the last two decades - won't have any future. And Greg C., it is easy to forecast, that absolutely independently from whether E.T.'s car key of his spacecraft will be found in a Martian meteorite or not, that in 5 years we'll have 1000% surcharges on the prices we had the last decade, and not only on Martians but on quite all meteorites - and even more precarious, we won't then have anymore that variety of those new meteorites, which are exceptional and important for meteorite science, if we don't stop and partially reverse that trend. Huh Greg C., simple very little example from yesterday, take that EL4 we're blowing out as our X-mas gratification for the collectors, 10 bucks a gram, still very nice chondrules - in the coming years you simply can forget such a price and such a stone at all. Antarctica isn't really an alternative - in 34 years only 200grams found of such. And else 6 finds from the hot deserts, mainly as a result of the enormous work, the private sector had done. Historically seen - you know it, the two DaGs cost minimum 15 times more, or if you go to the ELs in general - it's not so hefty weathered like the classics Happy Canyon, Yilmia or that stone, with which

Hello Martin and List, As always Martin, you are a true gentleman and a scholar! I appreciate how you get to the point and then go on to explain situations in a thorough manner, Thank You! In my case, I tend to be to the point in a more blunt manner sometimes, especially if I am tapping on an iPhone. As for GregC and his denial of directing his comments at Jim and I, we on this List are not stupid, just another upsetting insult. I might be getting older, slower, blinder, less patient, but sure as heck not getting dumber! To say he didn't even read my joke email is a poor toss out there. As for List archives, they are a fun read aren't they? You will see a couple squabbles over the years, but you will also see infinately more new meteorites being announced and discussed by the very same folks who compete AND work together. Good, healthy competition even with occasion squabbles is a good thing!! Keep up the excellent work, Martin and Stefan! Meteorites and bad backs must go together... I partially separated my C3 and C4 vertebrae several years ago that took me out of the area of work I always did (mechanic and construction) My stepdad was bit by a recluse and they actually had to cut some skin and meat away... they are nasty spiders! [meteorite-list] re Martian Meteorites
Interesting comments. I assume that the name KING OF ALL ANGRITES was bestowed with no thought of sales hype in mind. I don't need to sell any NWA 998. I don't care if I never sell another gram. I suspended sales more of a joke than anything. Private emails to me confirmed that most list members got the joke and did not view it as a conspiracy between Adam and I. I know what is going on behind the scenes with NWA 998 as I have made some of the donations to science. I am happy to sit here with it all day long. It does not take up much room in the safe deposit box and it sure doesn't eat much. Have a nice day all and be sure to stay tuned to my next sales suspension. Next week I may suspend sales of Murchison pending upcoming breaking news. :-) (It's a joke people!!!) Jim Strope 421 Fourth Street Glen Dale, WV 26038 http://www.catchafallingstar.com/ I think it was simple misunderstanding. All my post was intended to point out is that the NASA announcement was not going to increase prices, but if there was an increase it would likely be due to smart marketing. As for comments directed you (Greg H) as I said in my email sorry if you think they were but they were not. THIS is what I was commenting on... Jim, I can understand the need to suspend sales of NWA 998 until further notice. I can hear the researchers and paleontologists chanting Drill Baby, Drill as they are knocking down your door to get at some of those micro-fossils. Astrobiologists will be scampering for pieces once they figure out how fossil-rich this Nakhlite is. Too bad there are a lot of posers claiming to have found alien life forms to gain press, fame and money. It will cheapen the experience when the real deal is studied more, accepted and announced following proper protocol. As for me, several requests for pieces of NWA 998 have come in. Sorry, I only have a few milligrams left other than the main mass which will not be cut again. Best Regards, Adam Listees... Sales of my remaining specimens of NWA 998 have been suspended until further notice. Jim Strope 421 Fourth Street Glen Dale, WV 26038 http://www.catchafallingstar.com/; Right after these two posts from Adam - one from 6:22 and the other from 19 minutes later... It must have leaked out that NWA 998 is the most fossil-rich meteorite ever found or perhaps they found some more in other Nahklites. http://skymania.com/wp/2010/04/new-meteorite-clues-to-life-on-mars.html It will be interesting to hear what the big boys have to say. Adam Many believe that extraterrestrial proof of life will come this year by way of Martian Nahklite meteorites. http://skymania.com/wp/2010/01/proof-of-martians-will-come-this-year.html Maybe NASA is getting the jump on all of the recent posers who are making similar claims. Re: [meteorite-list] NWA 6291 and comments about it being The King of Angrites
In thought of hype and due to recent comments I gathered a few stats and info on angrites... NWA 6291 and why it is The King of angrites Yes, it is paired with the NWA 2999 grouping which in itself it totally unique to the angrite group. Thats nothing to knock, its very neat. There is even a chance its from Mercury, however that is disputed. That said, NWA 6291 is so different from what it is paired to, even one of the people who likely have more experience with angrites then anyone else on this planet publicly questioned the findings of a person who they take material to themselves - the same person that did the original work on 2999 and several of its pairings. The bottom line, its paired, but so unique to an already unique group, many questioned its actual pairing! It has 2cm pure anorthite crystals which when sliced are translucent just like a pallasite would be... to date, I have not seen ANY other angrite that has yielded translucent slices of pure anorthite when sliced to 2.5mm thick. If you have, I challenge ANYONE to share photos of a translucent anorthite angrite slice. Some Angrite stats taken from a recent ebay listing CURRENTLY THERE ARE 12 KNOWN ANGRITES AND A TOTAL KNOWN WEIGHT OF LESS THAN 50 POUNDS. D’ORBIGNY IS NOT ONLY THE LARGEST OF ALL ANGRITES BUT ALSO REPRESENTS 75% OF ALL ANGRITE MATERIAL EVER FOUND. TO THIS DAY ONLY 12 HAVE BEEN FOUND WORLDWIDE. 3 OF THESE 12 WERE FOUND IN ANTARCTICA AND CANNOT BE PRIVATELY COLLECTED OR OWNED. keeping those stats in mind, while NWA 6291 may not be the largest angrite known, or even the largest of the pairings, it is unique in appearance to an already unique group in the angrite class. Where did I come up with the name - The King of angrites? I had about 15 people email me when I first started showing pictures of translucent slices refer to it as that or the mother of angrites I did not coin the term, just picked up on what others were saying to me. My offering of NWA 6291 brought the price of angrites from $300 plus per gram down to where people were offering angrite material at $75 per gram. When one small stone of just 235g can affect price that substantially, its special. That said, Here is some of Tom Phillips awesome work with a thin section of NWA 6291 http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c165/jedisdiamond/A034-2.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c165/jedisdiamond/A031.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c165/jedisdiamond/1159-1.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c165/jedisdiamond/1148-1.jpg and also a thin section for sale from the same piece that was used to make the section Tom had. Ruben I have to agree with Greg. My wife had back surgery at Barrow Neurological Institute by a world renowned surgeon about 9 years ago. She was told to come back in a year and he would re-evaluate, she was told that if he operated again it might help but probably wouldn't. She was told to live with it. She has now been on Morphine for bout 8 years and manages OK Mr Hupe, as far as rectums are concerned I've always been afraid of them regardless of their color. As I wrote Dorothy back in July, it is a member of Main Belt I, and has a size somewhere between 1.2 and 2.2 km (the uncertainty driven by the range of possible reflectivities). If the asteroid were spherical (which of course, it isn't), it would have a volume in the range of 0.9-5.5 billion cubic meters. For fun, if you assume an ordinary chondrite bulk density of ~3.1 g/cm^3, that's a mass somewhere in the range of 2.8 to 17 billion metric tons. (That's quite a lot of meteorites!) [meteorite-list] Dawn Journal - November 30, 2010
http://dawn.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/journal_11_30_10.asp Dawn Journal Dr. Marc Rayman November 30, 2010 Dear Dawnizens of the Solar System, Dawn is maintaining its smooth and steady course through the solar system as it gradually closes in on Vesta. With the utmost patience and persistence, it continues thrusting with its ion propulsion system, heading toward its July rendezvous with the second most massive member of the main asteroid belt. Even as the spacecraft climbs farther from the sun, Earth's orbit is beginning to bring the planet closer to the probe. Having thrust for two-thirds of its time in space, Dawn has now achieved the velocity equivalent of about 5.5 kilometers per second (more than 12,000 miles per hour). We have seen before that this does not represent the /actual/ change in speed, but it is still a very useful measure of the effect of the thrusting. Although it has long since surpassed the record for propulsive change in velocity, Dawn is only now at the halfway point in the planned profile of thrusting for its ambitious eight-year expedition. By the time it completes its mission at dwarf planet Ceres (the asteroid belt's most massive resident) in 2015, it will have accomplished twice the effective velocity change it has achieved so far. At the beginning of this month, mission controllers installed new parameters in the software used to control the spacecraft's orientation (which engineers refer to as attitude) in the zero-gravity conditions of spaceflight. The attitude control system has four methods of keeping Dawn stable or turning to point in a new direction. When the spacecraft is not thrusting with the ion propulsion system, it has two techniques: it can rely on its reaction wheels or on its reaction control system. The wheels are gyroscope-like devices which, when electrically spun faster or slower, rotate (or stop the rotation of) the spacecraft. As we saw early last year, the reaction wheels alone are not sufficient, so when they are in operation, the reaction control jets also are used, although only occasionally. (The jets also are known as thrusters, nomenclature used in previous logs, but to avoid confusion with the ion thrusters in this discussion, we will refer to them only as jets.) The conventional rocket propellant hydrazine is fired through the jets to impart a small force to the ship, causing it to turn or to stop turning. Not content simply to coast through the solar system, as most interplanetary probes do, Dawn devotes the majority of the time to using one of its ion thrusters to change its course, constantly applying a light pressure to its orbit to bring it closer and closer to that of its destination. In addition to accelerating the ship, an ion thruster can be used to rotate it by slightly changing the angle of the thrust. This provides the attitude control system two other means of control when the spacecraft is in powered flight: it can use either the thruster plus the wheels (again with the occasional help of the reaction control system) or the thruster plus the more frequent use of the jets. Over the summer, engineers powered the reaction wheels off, preserving them for use in orbit around Vesta and Ceres. The reaction control system took over quite smoothly and has been keeping the craft stable ever since, most of the time in concert with the ion propulsion system. Even before deciding to deactivate the wheels for the rest of the interplanetary phases of the mission, engineers began working on a technique to use the hydrazine more efficiently, ensuring that the supply would last to the end of the long journey. When it left Earth more than three years ago, Dawn carried 45.6 kilograms (101 pounds) of hydrazine. It still has more than 38 kilograms (nearly 84 pounds) onboard, and frugal operators want to continue to use the precious resource sparingly. They devised a means to reduce the rate of propellant consumption when the reaction control system is the primary control method. (The expenditure of hydrazine during ion thrusting was already so low that there was no need for an improvement in that control mode.) The new control parameters were finalized after extensive analysis and simulation at Orbital Sciences Corporation and JPL. Without needing to change the software, operators radioed the values to Dawn in October and timed them to go into effect on Nov. 1 during the normal weekly hiatus in thrusting (and thus when attitude control is reliant exclusively on the jets) to point the main antenna to Earth. Thanks to this successful upgrade, the system now uses only about one-eighth as much hydrazine during those periods that it is holding steady and not applying ion thrust. To rotate from one attitude to another requires firing some jets to start the huge ship (the largest NASA has ever sent on an interplanetary voyage) turning and then others to stop it. To achieve a further savings in the hydrazine, controllers reduced the

[meteorite-list] Ball Lightning May Explain Some Fireball Sightings
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-11877842 Ball lightning 'may explain UFOs' By Jonathan Amos BBC News November 30, 2010 Some UFO sightings could be explained by ball lightning and other atmospheric phenomena, claims Australian astrophysicist Stephen Hughes. The scientist has made a detailed study of an unusual event in 2006 when large meteors were observed over Brisbane. Their appearance occurred at the same time as a brilliant green object was seen to roll over nearby mountains. Dr Hughes has put forward a theory linking the object - presumed to be ball lighting - to the fireballs. His idea is that one of the fireballs may have momentarily triggered an electrical connection between the upper atmosphere and the ground, providing energy for the ball lightning to appear above the hills. He has written up his explanation http://eprints.qut.edu.au/38939/ in a journal of the Royal Society http://rspa.royalsocietypublishing.org/. Dr Hughes says the extraordinary episode, which occurred during a night of fine weather, is just the sort of happening that might lead some to think they had witnessed UFO activity. If you put together inexplicable atmospheric phenomena, maybe of an electrical nature, with human psychology and the desire to see something - that could explain a lot of these UFO sightings, he told BBC News. Rendering of fireball Eyewitnesses were asked to draw what they saw. This is how graphic designer David Sawell recalled a fireball The scientist, who is a senior lecturer at the Queensland University of Technology, initiated the study after being called in by the local TV station to look over and explain photos of the fireballs captured by members of the public on camera phones. Fireballs are exceptionally bright meteors and are produced by fragments of space rock larger than the sand-grain-sized particles responsible for shooting stars; but like shooting stars they cross the sky at great speed. It seems at least three individual fireballs were seen on the night of 16 May 2006. Fireball over Brisbane (Roy Soc) This photo gives a sense of the intense brightness of one of the fireballs A subsequent survey organised by the university brought forward many more eyewitnesses, including a farmer who recalled seeing a luminous green ball rolling down a slope of the Great Divide, a mountainous ridge about 120km west of Brisbane. This object described as being about 30cm in diameter appeared to jump over some rocks and follow the path of a metal fence for some minutes. The farmer said he saw the green object come into view just after a fireball had passed overhead. He thought at first he was witnessing a plane crash and called the police, but a search the following day found no wreckage. Ball lightning seems an obvious explanation, says Dr Hughes. These bright, hovering spheres of light are not fully understood. They are known to be associated with thunderstorms, but not always, and there was certainly no electrical storm activity in the vicinity of the Great Divide. Dr Hughes does not offer a new explanation for the causes of ball lightning, merely how enough energy might have been put into the ground to trigger it. He proposes that the natural flow of current that exists between the upper-most reaches of the atmosphere, the ionosphere, and the ground was increased by the passage of the meteor that streamed charged particles and other conductive materials in its wake. The Great Divide The ball lightning was seen to roll down the slope following the line of a wire fence Could it be that the meteor descending through the atmosphere, having passed through the ionosphere, actually created a transient conductive connection between the ionosphere and the ground, even if it was only for a few seconds? Was that enough to put charge into the ground, and then with the discharge form some kind of plasma ball above? Think of the ionosphere and the ground as the terminals on the battery and you put a wire between those two terminals and current flows, and literally you get a spark. Other scientists have suggested that charges dissipating through the ground can create balls of glowing ionised gas above it. Dr John Abrahamson from the University of Canterbury, NZ, championed the idea 10 years ago that ball lightning consisted of vaporised mineral grains kicked out of the soil by a conventional lightning strike, an idea later tested with some success by Brazilian researchers. He described Dr Hughes' work as relatively feasible and something which made interesting connections. There's a long way to go before everyone will be happy and satisfied that we have a full solution, he told BBC News. Dr Hughes said his publication in Proceedings of the Royal Society A: Mathematical and Physical Sciences was intended to start a debate. It's not a vigorous theory; it's more a suggestion that may be worth exploring, he said. __ Visit the Archives at

[meteorite-list] AD - Exclusive Saharan NWA Meteorite Map Prints! - Suitable for Framing. Giclees and Prints.
Hi List! Just in time for Christmas - an exclusive new offering from Galactic Stone and Ironworks. :) This beautiful old world style map shows the Saharan Desert of Northwest Africa. Marked on the map are all of the common meteorite falls, finds, and place names. All of those exotic places you read about or talk about are shown on this map. This map was designed to be a piece of display art and a functional reference work. It would be ideal for framing and display in your home, office or near your meteorite collection. It would also make a fine teaching tool or outreach prop when talking about meteorites or meteorite hunting. Now you can see all of those places that have become household names in the meteorite world since the Saharan Gold Rush - Erfoud, Tindouf, Kem Kem, Great Sand Sea, and dozens more. Locations are keyed with symbols for different types - finds, falls, and hammer falls. This map was drawn by Brad Nault, a professional artist whose works have sold in galleries and have been used in several popular video games. The map was drawn at full 300dpi print resolution and is available in sizes ranging from 8.5 x 11 inches to 36 x 19 inches. The 8.5 x 11 size is laser-printed onto heavy cardstock paper. The larger sizes are professionally printed on a Epson high-dynamic range, large-format printer on your choice of heavy luster paper (a high quality, textured, thick paper) or giclee print on canvas. All sizes are suitable for framing. Refer to the sample-sized image. Note, the sample is not displayed at full-resolution or size. The second photo shows the 8.5x11 card stock print - the scale cube and sample frame are not included. The 8.5 x 11 prints are made in house, so those will be shipped upon order. The larger sizes are printed on demand, so there will be a 1-2 business day lead time on printing those. This map is available only from Galactic Stone and Ironworks and all rights are reserved. Update on the Saharan Desert NWA Map - The spelling of Almahata Sitta has been corrected, and Bilanga has been added. :) Since these are being printed on demand, I can correct errors or omissions. So feel free to report any mispellings or omissions. Best regards, MikeG PS - a USA meteorite map is in the works. :) -- Mike Gilmer - Galactic Stone Ironworks Meteorites Website - http://www.galactic-stone.com Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/galacticstone News Feed - http://www.galactic-stone.com/rss/126516 Twitter - http://twitter.com/galacticstone Meteorite Top List - http://meteorite.gotop100.com EOM - http://www.encyclopedia-of-meteorites.com/collection.aspx?id=1564 --- On 12/3/10, Michael Gilmer meteoritem...@gmail.com wrote: Hi List! NOTE - the 36x19 giclee is a limited edition run of 24. Each one is signed and numbered by the artist. The first giclee (#1) will be for sale at the upcoming Michael Blood Auction in Tucson.
