It is a great idea. If my memory serves me right I think it was Gary Fujihara who was keeping us updated during the auction via FaceBook last year. Hello there, I shortly wanted to tell, in the course of the bolide-thread, that there are affordable copies of a new reprint of William Fulke's Meteors available on amazon: William Fulke: Meteors, Or a plain description of all kinds of meteors, as well fiery and ayrie, as watry and earthy: briefly manifesting the causes of all blazing stars, shooting stars, flames in the aire, thunder, lightning, earthquakes, rain, dew, snow, clouds, springs, stones, and metals William Fulke (1538 - 1589) was a puritan divine, and it is relatively uncommon for those times, that such a scientific treatise is written not in Latin, but in popular speech. Maybe also interesting to see, how he transferred the Aristotelian terminology into English. Anyway - for the meteorite collector and the meteor observer it could be a good read, to see where their field originated, with the advantage of not having to know Latin. Ya, that Blaine Reed He may have outdone himself with this one: The FIRST Monnig collection specimen (confirmed by long time Connig collection curator, the highly regarded, Art Ehlmann of TCU). Lot number 88 BR 1 can be seen at: http://michaelbloodmeteorites.com/AuctionTucson11.html AND also has its own PAGE link - at: http://michaelbloodmeteorites.com/MonnigFirst.html I doubt it will bring $84K, but any meteorite history enthusiast will certainly regard this specimen's historical significance as the Mount Everest of collecting. Thanks, Michael PS: I know my frequent posts recently are beyond the weekly guidelines. I very rarely advertize on the list but many items - this one in particular, Will be of interest to readers whether or not they can afford to bid on such a spectacularly significant piece. Reed. Buck Mountain was found in Arizona in September of 2005 and has not officially appeared in the Meteoritical Bulletin yet. Official classificatioin is forthcoming. There are only 2 known H3.9 chondrites in the entire US, and only 40 known worldwide. Buck Mountain shows chondrules, but they are subtle and tend to blend into the background matrix. http://www.galactic-stone.com/product/buck-mountain--new-arizona-h39-chondrite-undergoing-classification Sayh al Uhaymir (SAU 504 provisional) L5/6 Chondrite Oman, 2010 There are only 97 known non-Antarctic meteorites of this transitional type chondrite. Of these, the majority come of out of Northwest Africa. This meteorite was found in 2010 in the deserts of Oman and has been provisionally classified as SAU 504 (L5/6). This meteorite is quite attractive and It shows metal flecks, veining, and subtle chondrules. This meteorite is good for type collectors who need to fill the L5/6 hole in their collections. micros - http://www.galactic-stone.com/product/sayh-al-uhaymir-sau-504--rare-l56-transitionary-type-from-oman 2.26g part slice - http://www.galactic-stone.com/product/sayh-al-uhaymir-sau-504-rare-l56-type-from-oman-226g-polished-ps 2.48g part slice - http://www.galactic-stone.com/product/sayh-al-uhaymir-sau-504-rare-l56-type-from-oman-248g-polished-ps Dhofar 018 Howardite Oman, 2000 Back in the early stages of the NWA gold rush, numerous new lunar meteorites were being discovered in the hot deserts of northwest Africa. When this meteorite first appeared, it looked like a lunar and it closely resembled the known lunaite Dho 1180. Before the classification became official, some of this meteorite was sold on the collector market at assumed lunar prices. Well, a cruel case of mistaken identity was revealed in the final analysis, and the material was shown to be a brecciated howardite. While this meteorite is an nice Vestan in it's own right, many buyers had paid lunar prices for their specimens, and a ruckus arose as dealers and collectors scrambled to correct their collections. [meteorite-list] The Global Meteorite Pricing Report - 2011 from MARSROX - (ad)
If you missed this opportunity the first time around... Collectors and meteorite dealers alike will be happy to know that the latest edition of The Global Meteorite Price Report - 2011 is now available for purchase. Coin and stamp collectors can find price guides for about every coin or stamp ever minted or printed. I have worked diligently to duplicate this effort with meteorites. ** Some comments from those collectors and dealers who have already purchased this report: Top notch work... I'm sure most everyone would enjoy looking it over. This is going to be really useful and I think that $15 is spot-on for an asking price. As always, an excellent compendium of our meteorite marketplace! Great work, Kevin! *** In 1995 I created a consistent methodology for determining the average price for a large number of meteorites. I have continued to compile data, publishing and selling it since 2005. No one else anywhere is attempting the broad scope of this survey. Collectors - Would you like to calculate the value of your existing collection based on the latest dealer price listings? Do you have a wish list of pending purchases and wonder what today's market price is for these specimens? Dealers - Do you want to be sure your price offerings are within the range of your competition, neither selling too inexpensively nor too dear? With the Tucson Rock-and-Gem Show less than two weeks away, wouldn't everyone profit by knowing the current average prices of the meteorites they will be buying and selling? To create extra value, I've nearly doubled the amount of different meteorites covered from the 2007 report. Additionally, historical prices from past reports going back to 2005 are included for trend spotting. The latest ask prices have been compiled by mining nearly every dealer website available, a process that took me over one hundred hours (kids, don't try this at home without extraordinary patience and a large bottle of eye drops.) Meteorites are divided by type and alphabetically for easy reference. There is price information on 185 meteorites in this latest report - virtually everything that at least two dealers are selling somewhere on the planet. I accept no advertising and I am not favoring or promoting any dealer's wares. The prices reflected are an unbiased snapshot of today's market. Even if you thought you knew the prices and trends in prices, like me, you will be surprised at many of the findings. ** I just wanted to let you know I just sent money via PayPal for the Meteorite Price List that you have so painstakingly put together. I am sure it will reflect your time and effort and become a great tool for some of us, especially me! Just like your book has become an excellent tool! I have read and re-read it learning something each time. It has become one of my favorite resource books. Very interesting indeed. Hi Kevin, I am impatient to look at your Global Meteorite Price Report - 2011 always a useful document. Przesłano Ci pieniądze! *** This eight page report has been reformatted as an Adobe pdf for easy transmittal to your e-mailbox. To purchase, please visit Paypal and my account at mars...@gmail.com. Deposit US$15 and a copy for your eyes only please :) will soon be transmitted to your email account. Don't put yourself at a competitive dis-advantage while buying or selling. Learn today what your meteorites are worth. Thanks for sending and I concur with your state of the market conclusions - my personal viewpoint is from that of the collector - not of the dealer - so it is refreshing to see that analysis perspective. To be honest I would be willing to pay even more for this report to help cover your time in collecting the data and doing the analysis - I know that it is a pretty small group that holds a high interest in this information. ** The proceeds from this project will be used to print additional copies of my book, The Art of Collecting Meteorites. I have been showered with comments from past purchasers concerned that I keep this book available to assist new collectors and make them aware of the hobby's past and current influences. Without your help, the book would be sold out and go out of print next month. My humble and sincere thanks for all those helping me further this grand and noble hobby of collecting meteorites. Re: [meteorite-list] LIVE video feed of the auction??? Please?
Hi List, Some of you know that I am familiar with auctions. Those of you who have auction lots consigned to this sale should be behind this scheme 1000%. In fact, it would be worth your sharing what expense there would be for setting up the hardware and access. If someone can come up with how to handle the rapid onlibe bidding, this idea would be a real bell ringer. One other method of absentee bidding is, of course, to give Michael your max bids and let him bid on your behalf, but Michael and I can tell you how hard that is to do fairly. Probably the way I would use would be to send my agent to the auction and have me on cell throughout. Whatever, it would be cool for you consignors...and Michael... to have the maximum number of bidders participate. Sorry buyers :0) Have fun, Count Deiro IMCA 3536 -Original Message- From: Galactic Stone Ironworks meteoritem...@gmail.com Sent: Jan 21, 2011 10:33 AM To: Richard Montgomery rickm...@earthlink.net Cc: Michael Blood mlbl...@cox.net, Jeff Kuyken i...@meteorites.com.au, Count Deiro countde...@earthlink.net, Shawn Alan photoph...@yahoo.com, Meteorite List meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] LIVE video feed of the auction??? Now, the technology has advanced to the point that a live video feed is very easy. An internet connection at the facility might not even be necessary, if the feed is broadcast via cellular internet via a smartphone. One could put a smartphone on a cradle or easel, point it at the action and just let it sit while it streams to the web. I don't know the particulars because I am a luddite without a smartphone, but it sounds doable from everything I had heard about the technology. If the expense cellular airtime is an issue, I'm sure some homebodies like myself would be happy to subsidize the expense. Re: [meteorite-list] LIVE video feed of the auction??? Please?
It's not as easy as it sounds. Even though you can stream live video for one person from one camera, it's a whole other story to stream to a lot of potential viewers at once. Most Commercial IP cameras can serve up video for a few viewers at the same time but once it gets to 10 or more at a time per camera, it starts to draw a lot of resources that the camera can't deliver. Not to mention that a each viewer will draw at least 2Mbps to view a decent video. Less if you don't want high definition. If a video server was installed and the camera streamed to the video server, the amount of potential viewers would then depend on that server's resources and then the bandwidth needs to be there. For what it's worth. Every year at the annual NEAF telescope/astronomy show, several vendors utilize live video feeds for promotional and entertainment purposes - broadcasting live via streaming webcam showing the events, presentations, speakers, etc. It's a good way to attend the event vicariously through others. Of course, the NEAF facility has internet, so that makes it easier. From a bidding standpoint, it might encourage absentee bids.
