Re: [meteorite-list] Where is all the Murchison???

2011-03-09 Thread Jeff Kuyken

Hi Richard all,

I've been watching Murchison pretty carefully over the last 12-24mths. There
has been a somewhat steep incline in price that I believe is probably mainly
due to the amount of media attention it has received during that time.
Personally I think it's over-priced and I would not expect the price to stay
there. eBay auctions often go unsold (probably because the prices are too
high) and most pieces do seem to be under 2g.

But all that said, if anyone wants any Murchison stones for the current
prices of $150-$200/g just let me know. There are several stones available
over here from 10-80g.

Cheers,

Jeff Kuyken

Recently some of us had a discussion on Facebook about how rare Murchison
seems to be. Rarely do you see as much as a gram available.

The Heritage Auction has a huge Murchison, 535.9g individual
(http://fineart.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=6061Lot_No=49046)

Maybe I've missed them, or not privy to their availability, but where is
all the Murchison between a gram and and this largest individual?

Anyone?

I remember that Murchinson stone, Jim. It is very awesome in person! I like
the fact it still has the grass embedded on it. Does that make it a hammer

[meteorite-list] Color View from Orbit Shows Mars Rover Beside Crater

2011-03-09 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.cfm?release=2011-072

Color View from Orbit Shows Mars Rover Beside Crater
Jet Propulsion Laboraotry
March 09, 2011

NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity has nearly completed its
three-month examination of a crater informally named Santa Maria, but
before the rover resumes its overland trek, an orbiting camera has
provided a color image of Opportunity beside Santa Maria.

The High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's
Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter acquired the image on March 1, while
Opportunity was extending its robotic arm to take close-up photos of a
rock called Ruiz Garcia. From orbit, the tracks Opportunity made as it
approached the crater from the west are clearly visible. Santa Maria
crater is about 90 meters (295 feet) in diameter.

The HiRISE image is at http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/catalog/PIA13803
. March 1 corresponded to the 2,524th Martian day, or sol, of
Opportunity's work on Mars. A raw image from Opportunity's front
hazard-avoidance camera from the same day, showing the arm extended to
Ruiz Garcia, is at
http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/all/1/f/2524/1F352255948EFFB1F5P1110L0M1.HTML
. To complete the scale of imaging, a raw image taken by Opportunity's
microscopic imager that day, showing textural detail of the rock, is at
http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/all/1/m/2524/1M352254519EFFB1F5P2935M2M1.HTML
.

Opportunity completed its three-month prime mission on Mars in April
2004 and has been working in bonus extended missions since then. The
Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which arrived at Mars on March 10, 2006,
has also completed its prime mission and is operating in an extended
mission.

The High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment is operated by the
University of Arizona, Tucson. The instrument was built by Ball
Aerospace Technologies Corp., Boulder, Colo. NASA's Jet Propulsion
Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in
Pasadena, manages the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and the Mars
Exploration Rover projects for NASA's Science Mission Directorate,
Washington, and built Opportunity and its twin rover, Spirit. Lockheed
Martin Space Systems, Denver, is NASA's industry partner for the Mars
Reconnaissance Orbiter project and built that spacecraft.

Recently some of us had a discussion on Facebook about how rare Murchison
seems to be. Rarely do you see as much as a gram available.

The Heritage Auction has a huge Murchison, 535.9g individual

Maybe I've missed them, or not privy to their availability, but where is
all the Murchison between a gram and and this largest individual?

 Anyone?

[meteorite-list] Dawn Spacecraft Creeping Up on Vesta

2011-03-09 Thread Ron Baalke

http://blogs.jpl.nasa.gov/2011/03/dawn-spacecraft-creeping-up-on-vesta/

Dawn Spacecraft Creeping Up on Vesta
By Marc Rayman
March 9, 2011

NASA's Dawn spacecraft is a mere four months away from getting into
orbit around its first target, the giant asteroid Vesta. Each month,
Marc Rayman, Dawn's chief engineer, shares an update on the mission's
progress.

Dear Pleasant Dawnversions,

Deep in the asteroid belt, Dawn continues thrusting with its ion
propulsion system. The spacecraft is making excellent progress in
reshaping its orbit around the sun to match that of its destination, the
unexplored world Vesta, with arrival now less than five months away.

We have considered before the extraordinary differences between Dawn's
method of entering orbit and that of planetary missions employing
conventional propulsion. This explorer will creep up on Vesta, gradually
spiraling closer and closer. Because the probe and its target already are
following such similar routes around the sun, Dawn is now approaching Vesta
relatively slowly compared to most solar system velocities. The benefit of
the more than two years of gentle ion thrusting the spacecraft has completed
so far is that now it is closing in at only 0.7 kilometers per second
(1600 mph). Each day of powered flight causes that speed to decrease by
about 7 meters per second (16 mph) as their orbital paths become still more
similar. Of course, both are hurtling around the sun much faster,
traveling at more than 21 kilometers per second (47,000 mph), but for
Dawn to achieve orbit around Vesta, what matters is their relative velocity.

It may be tempting to think of that difference from other missions as
somehow being a result of the destination being different, but that is
not the case. The spiral course Dawn will take is a direct consequence
of its method of propelling itself. If this spacecraft were entering
orbit around any other planetary body, it would follow the same kind of
flight plan. This unfamiliar kind of trajectory ensues from the long
periods of thrusting (enabled by the uniquely high fuel efficiency of
the ion propulsion system) with an extremely gentle force.

Designing the spiral trajectories is a complex and sophisticated
process. It is not sufficient simply to turn the thrust on and expect to
arrive at the desired destination, any more than it is sufficient to
press the accelerator pedal on your car and expect to reach your goal.
You have to steer carefully (and if you don't, please don't drive near
me), and so does Dawn. As the ship revolves around Vesta in the giant
asteroid’s gravitational grip, it has to change the pointing of the
xenon beam constantly to stay on precisely the desired winding route to
the intended science orbits.

Dawn will scrutinize Vesta from three different orbits, known somewhat
inconveniently as survey orbit
http://dawn.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/journal_05_27_10.asp, high altitude
mapping orbit (HAMO)
http://dawn.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/journal_09_27_10.asp, and low
altitude mapping orbit (LAMO)
http://dawn.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/journal_12_30_10.asp. Upon concluding
its measurements in each phase, it will resume operating its ion
propulsion system, using the mission control team's instructions for
pointing its thruster to fly along the planned spiral to the next orbit.

Those who have navigated around the solar system, as well as others who
have contemplated the nature of orbits without having practical
experience, recognize that the lower the orbital altitude, the faster
the orbital motion. This important principle is a consequence of
gravity’s strength increasing as the distance between the massive body
and the orbiting object decreases. The speed has to increase to balance
the stronger gravitational pull. (For a reminder of some of the details,
be sure to go here
http://dawn.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/journal_8_24_08.asp before you go out
for your next orbital expedition.)

Dawn's winding orbital path obeys the same rules. The lower the orbit,
the faster and tighter the spirals, because the orbital velocity is
greater. The first few coiled routes around Vesta this summer will be
long and slow http://dawn.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/journal_04_28_10.asp,
taking days to complete. When it is at the lowest altitude, where each
orbit takes only four hours, the spirals will be that much faster, so
the craft will have to steer with greater agility to synchronize its ion
thrusting with its rapidly changing location.

In its interplanetary travels, spiraling outward from the sun to reach
Vesta, each loop takes years to complete, so Dawn has not yet had to
steer through any tight turns. The direction it aims the operating
thruster hardly moves at all during a full week of thrusting.

Pointing a thruster in the direction needed to spiral around Vesta
requires turning the entire spacecraft. Each thruster is mounted on its
own gimbal with only a very limited range of motion. In normal
operation, the gimbal is aimed so that the

[meteorite-list] Prolific NASA Orbiter Reaches Five-Year Mark (MRO)

2011-03-09 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.cfm?release=2011-073

Prolific NASA Orbiter Reaches Five-Year Mark
Jet Propulsion Laboratory
March 09, 2011

PASADENA, Calif. -- NASA's versatile Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which
began orbiting Mars five years ago tomorrow, March 10, has radically
expanded our knowledge of the Red Planet and is now working overtime.

The mission has provided copious information about ancient environments,
ice-age-scale climate cycles and present-day changes on Mars.

The orbiter observes Mars' surface, subsurface and atmosphere in
unprecedented detail. The spacecraft's large solar panels and dish
antenna have enabled it to transmit more data to Earth -- 131 terabits
and counting, including more than 70,000 images -- than all other
interplanetary missions combined. Yet many things had to go well for the
mission to achieve these milestones.

After a seven-month journey from Earth, the spacecraft fired its six
main engines for nearly 27 minutes as it approached Mars on March 10,
2006. Mars could not capture it into orbit without this critically timed
maneuver to slow the spacecraft. The orbiter's intended path took it
behind Mars, out of communication, during most of the engine burn.

That was tense, waiting until the spacecraft came back out from behind
Mars and we had contact, recalled Dan Johnston, now the mission's
deputy project manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif.

The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter mission met all its science goals in a
two-year primary science phase. Two extensions, the latest beginning in
2010, have added to the bounty of science returns.

The mission has illuminated three very different periods of Mars
history. Its observations of the heavily cratered terrains of Mars, the
oldest on the planet, show that different types of ancient watery
environments formed water-related minerals. Some of these would have
been more favorable for life than others.

In more recent times, water appears to have cycled as a gas between
polar ice deposits and lower-latitude deposits of ice and snow.
Extensive layering in ice or rock probably took hundreds of thousands to
millions of years to form and, like ice ages on Earth, is linked to
cyclic changes in the tilt of the planet's rotation axis and the
changing intensity of sunlight near the poles.

The present climate is also dynamic, with volatile carbon dioxide and,
just possibly, summertime liquid water modifying gullies and forming new
streaks. With observations of new craters, avalanches and dust storms,
the orbiter has shown a partially frozen world, but not frozen in time,
as change continues today.

In addition to its science observations, the mission provides support
for other spacecraft as they land and operate on the surface. The
orbiter's cameras captured the Phoenix Mars Lander as it parachuted to
the surface in 2008 and monitored the atmosphere for dust storms that
would affect Phoenix and the Mars Exploration Rovers Spirit and
Opportunity. The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter augmented NASA's Mars
Odyssey in performing relay functions for these missions.

JPL's Phil Varghese, project manager for the Mars Reconnaissance
Orbiter, said, The spacecraft is still in excellent health. After five
years at Mars, it continues with dual capabilities for conducting
science observations, monitoring the Mars environment and serving as a
relay.

The orbiter has examined potential landing sites for NASA's Mars Science
Laboratory mission, which will land a rover named Curiosity at one of
those sites in August 2012. We are preparing to support the arrival of
the Mars Science Laboratory and the rover's surface operations,
Varghese said. In the meantime, we will extend the science observations
into a third Martian year. One Mars year lasts nearly two Earth years.

The orbiter's Mars Color Imager has produced more than four Earth years
of daily global weather maps. More than 18,500 images from the High
Resolution Imaging Science Experiment camera have resolved features as
small as a desk in target areas scattered around the planet that,
combined, cover about as much ground as Alaska. More than 36,900 images
from the Context Camera cover nearly two-thirds of the surface of Mars
at a resolution that allows detection of features the size of large
buildings.

The Compact Reconnaissance Spectrometer for Mars has mapped minerals on
more than three-fourths of the planet's surface. The Mars Climate
Sounder has monitored atmospheric temperature and aerosols with more
than 59 million soundings. The Shallow Radar has checked for underground
layers in more than 8,600 swaths of ground-penetrating observations.

Each Mars year is unique, and additional coverage gives us a better
chance to understand the nature of changes in the atmosphere and on the
surface, said JPL's Rich Zurek, project scientist for the Mars
Reconnaissance Orbiter. We have already learned that Mars is a more
dynamic and diverse planet than what we knew five years

I think that's a red flag.

The question is: What is it?

Apparently there is quiet a bit or Murchison around and available, but in sizes
that are beyond the means of many budget minded collectors. No doubt why I
haven't had a chance to see them before. I guess I'm a little surprised with so
much apparent demand for 1 - 2 gram slices that no one seems to be cutting.

I don't blame ya though. If I had individuals in these sizes, I wouldn't be too
interested in cutting them up either.

Wow. I usually don't try to jump in on issues like this unless they are
of a concern to me personally. Michael, I've always admired you and

I've always been concerned over the Met List, at who's running it. I

to the point, who is Art? And how come you have become spokesman for the
Met List? Are you Art? Or do you have carte blanche?

Re: [meteorite-list] Welcome Home

2011-03-09 Thread Michael Blood
Jim, Gary, Eric and all,

No, it is NOT a joke. There is nothing funny about
This situation at all.

I stated NOTHING in my post Mike has is not born
Out in Mike's own public statements. (though Jim informs
Me it may have been a different prescription drug he gets
Out of Mexico) - hell folks, where have you been? READ THE
STINKING ARCHIVES.

If you all really cared about Mike's welfare you would
Be trying to support him in getting professional help, get on
prescribed medication and get stabilized.

You are all having knee jerk reactions. Think about it. If
Mike were your brother wouldn't you want to see him get
proper treatment?

Mike is home safe - thank God. While he was in danger I
Did everything possible I could to minimize any negative impact
On him. The list started yammering about it and I pointed out we
Needed to remain silent lest we make matters worse for Mike and
Rob.

John Blennert gave the talk before the auction and we agreed
It should not be telecast, as John went through a very similar
situation in Oman a couple of years ago and Omani officials offered
him $235,000 to get Mike back on Omani territory (so they could
Incarcerate him). John TOLD Mike this upon his return and Mike
Acted like John was blaming him for John's incarceration.

This is ALSO NOT NEW INFORMATION - but somehow
This group seems to think since Mike has been through a hard
Time of late we should pretend he doesn't have a problem.

Mike isn't going to listen to me because I am strait with him
AND NO ONE ELSE seems to be willing to or they somehow just
Don't see the self destructive behavior right in front of their face.

If you all think everything Mike does does not add up to a
Big problem for HIM, or, you just don't get it, or you just don't

Hi Michael and all,

I’ve been on the list for about 3.5 years now and I remember very well some
of Mike’s lunatic rantings, so those of you who have been on the list longer
than I have should also remember (and I’ve been told that it was even worse

But, the only thing that I was “unhappy” about was when you (Michael) talked

WHY Michael is the way he is, but it’s not your decision to talk about that.
Nobody should talk about someone else’s medical situation in a forum like
this. I work for a medical software company and we see tons of patient
information all the time. If I were to mention something about a patient, I
would be fined by the government and then fired (and I don’t even work for
the gov’t). We don’t have to worry about that here on the list, but it just
goes to show that the gov’t is serious about keeping private health
information PRIVATE, so we all should do the same.

I’ve seen you have a few lunatic rantings over the years, too, so you might
want to be careful (as Eric just mentioned in his last post).

I didn’t like it when some people wanted to cast their vote on whether Art
should let Mike back on the list or not. We shouldn’t pressure Art one way
or another (so I’m not going to “vote” on it) since he is the boss of this

BTW, I’m glad Mike and Robert are safe now. I don’t know either of them

locked up in a foreign country.

I'm relatively new here, with maybe a new perspective? Seems to me all of
this is relevent from the story meteorites tell us all, and then all the
personalities and sometimes awkward positions of people who are involved,
including the in-fighting. So far I've watched a few tussles and
wonder...hmmm.all interesting, sometimes some make me cringe, some are
petty, most all are worthy of the intellect I admire.

I don't read everything here by a long-shot, but there is definitely a two
headed thread-personality on this List ... meteorites, and then the stories
that everyone is involved with. What a grand tapestry!

Hi Michael and all,

I've been on the list for about 3.5 years now and I remember very well
some of Mike's lunatic rantings, so those of you who have been on the
list longer than I have should also remember (and I've been told that it
was even worse before I was on the list).

But, the only thing that I was unhappy about was when you (Michael)
talked about Mike's medical issues. I understand that you wanted people
to know WHY Michael is the way he is, but it's not your decision to talk
about that. Nobody should talk about someone else's medical situation in
a forum like this. I work for a medical software company and we see
tons of patient information all the time. If I were to mention
something about a patient, I would be fined by the government and then
fired (and I don't even work for the gov't). We don't have to worry
about that here on the list, but it just goes to show that the gov't is
serious about keeping private health information PRIVATE, so we all
should do the same.

I've seen you have a few lunatic rantings over the years, too, so you
might want to be careful (as Eric just mentioned in his last post).

I didn't like it when some people wanted to cast their vote on whether
Art should let Mike back on the list or not. We shouldn't pressure Art
one way or another (so I'm not going to vote on it) since he is the
boss of this list. He'll do what he thinks is best for the list.

BTW, I'm glad Mike and Robert are safe now. I don't know either of them
personally, but I'm sure that they are good people and don't deserve to
be locked up in a foreign country.

Regards,
Bob

I'm all in favor of Art probationally allowing Mike to rejoin the
MetList to tell his story. I honestly think nothing but good can
come from allowing Mike and Robert to relate their experiences in
Oman so that we can at least learn some anecdotal information
about the legality of searching for meteorites in that country,
and the potential consequences of doing so.

There is no denying that John Blennert warned Mike of the unfavorable
situation in Oman (of which John would certainly know). So I, for
one, am quite curious to understand the reason why Mike ultimately
decided it was worth risking continued travels there. In his defense,
Mike has been to Oman countless times without incident, so I can see
why he might poo-poo Blennert's warnings. And if the Omani government
was so focused on detaining/encarcerating Mike, how is it that they
failed to do so on the many visits that occurred subsequent to John's
warning? Is the customs department that incompetent? It's not like
Mike was travelling under an alias.

Of course, most of this is water under the bridge since Mike and
Robert ~were~ ultimately detained and jailed. But now that they are
safely stateside, I would love to hear (read) their side of the
story. What better place to read it than here? --Rob

[meteorite-list] General List Policies/ rules

2011-03-09 Thread habibi abdelaziz
hello all,

first i want to say that this is good news that two big hunters are home with
there family, and enjoying life again, very happy to har this fantastic news
after spending two month in a bad dream,

segond i think that the list rules must improve and change to better rules,
that can keep this list more polit and that we can make it international with
a
big audiance,and more members,

one thing rules are important.

1= no one has the right to publicly attack an other one, this is the limit of
the democracy
you can attack a person opinion but not the person himself as an entire entite,
you do not agree with X or Y adea but do not attack him, this two difrent
things

2= private life and personnal matter must not be on the list we discuss stones
we have to leave the rest out of the list,

3= if we have meteorite as a passion we have also other bissuness and other
friend and family
anyone googling your name will find all the private fight on the list and will
take you as that, as he is not in the context, and all the post on the list are
in the archives and will stay forever so we must think to protect our
reputation for now and the futur, like usinf other id in the list

so if i m out of the list and i read MB post i will think to many bad things
ambiguites,so indirectly even if you want to help
MF you are with good or bad well destroying his reputation ,personnal matter
must stay out:you do not have the right: absolutely not

everyone has his own problem , but never , i say never, no one has the right
to
attack anyone you can argue adea or opinion but never a private or a confidence
or a personal issue must not be public,

no one is immune against problems, life is full of surprise but do not bring
that to the list;

on other hand a civilised and polit debat are always welcome;

i do not see also why a man hurt an other what are the goals, you think this
will help,

the matter to stop someone from the list or let him back must be a democratic
issue discusion between art and a team voted by list member to manage the list
and helping art to take a wise decision

my 1.dirhams

[meteorite-list] Welcome home

2011-03-09 Thread meteoritefinder
I had a long talk with Mike today. It was pretty deep and very interesting. I
don't think that he would mind me relaying that he said this experience has
given him a new perspective on essentially everything.I think we will see a
difference in how Mike reacts to especially the little things in life.
Best,
Robert Woolard

2011-03-09 Thread GREG LINDH

I've had some hot disagreements with Mike Farmer in the past, as have others
here on the List, but I think we should back off and cut him a break here. I'm
just happy that he and Robert are safe. I look forward to hearing what
happened in Oman.

 Hi Michael,

With all due respect, if you really want to help Mike, don't you think you
could do it in a little better fashion? If not, don't you think it is pretty
low to cut him so badly the day after he returns home? I am friends with
both of you and wouldn't want either one of you talking like this.

 Best Regards,
 Greg

Think it is your place to confront him with his self destructive
Behavior -- well, folks, I don't know what to tell you, but I can't
Do that to a friend. (Yes, I am sure Mike does not consider me
A friend right now - but as far as I am concerned, I am the only
One who is really relating to him as a friend).

Oh, ya, you can tell yourselves what I have said is not friendly.
Well, what I think is not friendly is seeing a brother in trouble and
Being unwilling to deal with him about it.

I am dumbfounded at people's reactions - do you think that just
Because he could have had his hands cut off or been in prison for
Years or even put to death that that means we should all pretend
He didn't put himself in that position AFTER it was clearly explained
To him by John Blennert that Oman was OUT TO GET HIM?

 - Going to a KINGDOM you HAVE BEEN TOLD is out to get you
 - Self medicating with serious prescription drugs
 - Being a business man who regularly bursts into ranting and
Raving at potential customers and co-businessmen
These are all serious self destructive behaviors. So, Greg, Jim
And Eric, if you really give a damn about Mike's welfare Don't just
say, Hooray! You got back safe THIS TIME., help him get the help
 he needs.

 Sincerely, Michael

don't say much negative on list, and try to keep it down to a dull roar.
But this time I can' help it... You've said some pretty hateful things
