[meteorite-list] AD: Various Specimens

2023-07-28 Thread Bigjohn Shea via Meteorite-list
Good Day All,
Some random specimens in my collection that I am no longer attached to, so
looking to move them along.

Wabar Shale - Attractive, craggy and shapely specimen. Good size at 29.5g
weight. Small specimens at 5-6g often sell for $50+ so this is a very
reasonable price. = $177

Canyon Diablo Impact Glass - Call it a tektite if you like, though may not meet
the definition of one. Rare specimen, nearly non-existent on the collecting
market. Provenance from the Hupe collection. 1.2g = $72

NWA 14845 - R3 S2 w/ low weathering state. Thin but 99% crusted specimen with
attractive features. Displays very well. 29.2g = 90$

Bag of weathered NWA-X - I used to use these as give away specimens when I gave
lectures at conventions and schools. It has been some time since I was active
in that way, so I'm letting these go. Great for lapidary hobbyists who like to
polish end cuts, or great for your own give away specimens. Either way they are
priced fairly. Smallest of them weigh <1g and largest of them weigh 30-40g.
866g in total. = $215

Shipping is extra. Payments by Paypal or Venmo.

As always, open to offers, but more so if buying multiple specimens.

Contact me separately for photos.

2022-12-06 Thread Bigjohn Shea via Meteorite-list
Fellow Collectors,
Hope you are all doing great!

Newly approved is a CK5 specimen from the hot dessert named NWA 15302. While
officially classified as a CK5 the specimen was in consideration for CK5-an
status briefly due to its very complicated petrography. Please see the metbull
for a full description. Regardless it is an attractive specimen with some
unique petrological qualities. The crusted end cuts are particularly nice. With
a TKW of only 36g there is not much to offer, and this was indeed the only
specimen of its kind found in the area by the hunters who uncovered it.

10g full slice = $220
10.4g end cut = $260 (main mass)
3.8g end cut = $114

Please contact me for photos. Shipping added if international, otherwise
included in the price.

Re: [meteorite-list] CERTIFICATION OF AUTHENTICITY

2022-07-27 Thread Bigjohn Shea via Meteorite-list
Thought I'd chime in...

In my humble opinion, this is a non-issue.

In the world of collectibles such as meteorites determining the authenticity of
a specimen occurs in one of three ways:
1) You know enough about a specimen yourself to decide on your own that it is
what someone says it is.
2) You know enough about the person (or company) you are buying from to trust
that it is what someone says it is.
3) You trade with a noted institution and get exactly what they say it is.

Whether or not there is a larger organization that is "authorized" to give
certifications on a specimen is meaningless.
a) Not every specimen can be certified by that organization. Nor should they
be. They would be overwhelmed with specimens, and as we all know the definitive
methods of testing are nearly all destructive in nature.
b) Even when such organizations do exist, they are frequently fallible,
sometimes corrupt, and often disagree with one another if there is more than
one organization issuing certifications.

Some prime examples of this are from the world of genuine Japanese sword
collecting, also called Nihonto collecting.
i) The most highly respected shinsa (judgement of authenticity for a sword)
organization in Japan is called the NBTHK. They went through a significant
scandal in the 1970's when antique swords with gimei (fake) signatures, where
certified as zaimei (genuine) signatures. This occurred for various reasons,
the most crucial of which was bribery. All swords certified during that era had
to subsequently be re-certified under the new leadership and scholarship of the
organization, and a huge number of those swords were found to have fake
signatures.
ii) Another respected organization that performs shinsa is called the NTHK. I
have personally submitted a sword for NTHK shinsa and had it approved as
zaimei, only to submit it again to the NBTHK and see them call the signature
gimei. In other words, not even the most respected scholars in a field of study
always agree.

Cheers,

[meteorite-list] AD: Casas Grandes, Mexico

2022-07-18 Thread Bigjohn Shea via Meteorite-list
Dear Fellow Collectors,
Hope you are all doing well.

Available here is a very appreciable 14.4g slice of the Casas Grandes
meteorite, an IIAB from Chihuahua, Mexico. Arguably one of the rarest and most
historic Mexican meteorites.

Discovered in 1867, the mass was uncovered in a burial chamber within the
larger Casas Grandes archeological structure. Curiously, it was situated amidst
mummified bodies, and wrapped in cloths similar to the surrounding occupants of
that tomb. Without question this meteorite was an invaluable part of the
culture that thrived there for hundreds of years, though what meaning it had to
them remains unclear.

This specimen was cut from a larger mass traded to Jay Piatek from the USNM. A
portion of that was sold to Corey Kuo who later sold it to Rob Wesel. It was
then butterflied into three specimens, and this 14.4g specimen came from that
cutting. This slice comes with provenance from Rob Wesel as well as myself.
Duplicated photographic provenance from the USNM and Corey Kuo will be provided
as well.

[meteorite-list] Ad: Duruma, Kenya 1853

2022-07-17 Thread Bigjohn Shea via Meteorite-list
Fellow Collectors,
Hope you are all well.

Available today is a true rarity, a 0.97g specimen of the Duruma meteorite, a
witnessed fall from 1853 in Kenya. It fell not far from a few boys of the
Duruma tribe, and was subsequently worshipped within their culture, resting on
an alter for years after.

In 1856 the Duruma tribe was largely slaughtered by the neighboring Masaii
tribe. Understandably, they lost faith in the meteorite's ability to benefit
them. It was subsequently sold to German missionaries in the area and
transported to Munich. It was cut, and the main mass was on display at the
Munich museum in 1942 when the British bombed the area, destroying the museum
and the main mass with it. Roughly 50g of Duruma are documented in
institutional collections.

I know of only one other private collector who has a specimen of Duruma. That
specimen, and this one, both have an origin point from Australian merchant Bob
Walker (who died in the 1990's) and received it via an institutional trade.
That specimen was subsequently acquired by Russ Kempton, and was cut into two
specimens. One was sold to John Schooler decades ago, who later sold his
specimen to me when he retired from collecting. I have since acquired this
remaining 0.97g specimen from Russ, and sold John Schooler's specimen to
another private collector.

This specimen is thought of by some as the Holy Grail of worshipped meteorites.
It will come with provenance from Russ Kempton as well as myself. I have
visually paired it with the two specimens in the Vienna museum.

Available today is a phenomenal Chelyabinsk impact artifact, a window damaged
by the blast of the Chelyabinsk meteorite. This window measures roughly 13" by
20" and 3" deep. It will come with some glass fragments that are still adhering
to the frame. It has a very typical weathered appearance of domestic windows
from the region, and was acquired not long after the blast itself. Ephemera of
this type has sold at auctions for thousands of dollars, but my asking price is
very reasonable by comparison. Shipping for this item will be calculated based

I'm upgrading my Chelyabinsk specimen so this beauty, purchased immediately
after the fall date from a local hunter, is now available.

Chelyabinsk, ~97% crusted pre-melt individual, 30.7g with regmaglypts.

Asking 280$ for this. Email me here for photos.

Priority shipping in the USA is included in the price. International shipping
is extra.

In my estimation, Bur-Arbor likely rests in the category of "Find - Doubtful Fall" or "Find" as defined below. The degree of weathering seen on the mass is unlikely to be from an event in 1997, though an earlier event in the region may be on record somewhere, and thus be loosely connected to the mass. The below is quoted from Michael's link. Very helpful...Cheers,John A. Shea, MDIMCA 3295www.bigjohnmeteorites.com"The New Categorization System for Falls and Finds:In December, 2014, the NomCom adopted a new system for categorizing falls and finds. Instead of a binary system, the new one has five categories, which can be arranged in order of confidence that a meteorite is an observed fall. The top two categories will comprise meteorites that NomCom determines to be falls, and are subject to the nomenclatural rules for falls:A “Confirmed fall” is a meteorite determined to be a fall beyond reasonable doubt. There was a well-documented fall event, witnessed either visually or with instruments, and collection occurred soon after the event. Physical evidence is consistent with a fresh fall, or, when collection did not occur immediately, convincingly points to a fall at the time of the event.A “Probable fall” is a meteorite found to be a fall by the weight of the evidence, but there remains some degree of doubt. There were observations of an event considered likely to have produced meteorites, but there remains some doubt about whether the collected meteorite is related to the event, or about the nature of the event itself. The bottom three categories will comprise meteorites that NomCom determines to be finds, and are subject to the nomenclatural rules for finds, including application of DCA numbering sequences.A “Find, possible fall” is a meteorite that was submitted with information that may connect it to a fall event, but the evidence was found to be insufficient to accept this claim. There was an observation that seems consistent with a fall event, but there is significant doubt, either about whether the meteorite is connected to the event or about the observations of the event itself.A “Find, doubtful fall” is also a meteorite submitted with information that may connect it to a fall event, but there is a high degree of doubt about whether the meteorite is connected to the event or about the observations of the event itself.A “Find” is a meteorite for which no evidence, or no credible evidence, was submitted concerning the fall circumstances."On 5/21/21 at 7:29 AM, Michael Mulgrew via Meteorite-list wrote:

[meteorite-list] Ad: Uwet, Nigeria 1825

2021-02-10 Thread Bigjohn Shea via Meteorite-list
Dear Fellow Collectors,
Hope you are all doing well.

Available here is a very rare specimen of the Uwet meteorite. Supposedly a
witnessed fall in 1825, it was venerated as a source of prosperity by the
locals for decades. It was removed temporarily by English colonists in 1903 and
sent to the British Museum. As the story goes, the town of Uwet subsequently
fell into devastation amidst a Smallpox plague. The locals attributed this to
the removal of the meteorite, and the town is said to have prospered ever since
it was returned. Less than half the 55kg mass currently resides in the village,
with another ~28kg spread out over various institutions, the bulk of this in
Heidelberg.

This specimen originated from a larger portion sold by Eric Twelker. Afterwards
reduced by Russ Kempton. Now weighing 12.86g. It has a small inclusion and also
displays an array of prismatic rhabdites which are a characteristic of Uwet.

Asking 770$ with shipping included

Please inquire for photo.

[meteorite-list] Ad: Appraisal Service and T-shirts!

2020-03-28 Thread Bigjohn Shea via Meteorite-list
Dear Fellow Collectors,
Hope you are all doing well today!

After some considerable effort trying to find someone to work on an appraisal
of my core collection, I have realized that there is a void in the world of
meteorite collecting. Namely, an affordable and accessible appraisal service
for meteorite collectors.

When people did have an interest in working on my appraisal, their services
tended to be unnecessarily expensive, and rarely were they very responsive as
the effort needed to complete the appraisal is often too time consuming for
them to perform amidst the other obligations of their life.

For this reason I have decided to offer up my own knowledge and expertise in
this realm of collecting, and begin performing services as an appraiser. I will
be using a customized algorithm for determining the valuation of specimens, as
well as established market values based on prior sales (when needed) to verify
the valuations of specimens by their merits. This system will make the process
of forming an appraisal of a collection much easier and as a result be much
cheaper than a purely hourly rate based method.

The cost of the the appraisal service will be based on the number of specimens
that are included in the appraisal.

Please contact me at bigjohns...@mail.com for additional details.

T-SHIRTS!
Last but not least, I have added some custom designed "Ultra Cotton" t-shirts
to my website, which are readily available in L, XL, and XXL sizes. Additional
sizes can be ordered if needed.

Cheers,
John A. Shea, MD

[meteorite-list] "Space Rocks" magazine, May 2017 issue

2019-04-07 Thread Bigjohn Shea via Meteorite-list
Dear List,
Hope you are all well.

If anyone has a copy of the May, 2017 issue of Space Rocks Magazine that they
are willing to lend/sell to me, please let me know. It contains an article
regarding the Iron Creek meteorite which I wrote, but unfortunately I gave away
all my copies to interested persons. I failed to save one for myself it seems...

The publisher is not making new issues, and has not responded to my emails. If
nothing else I'd love to take photos of my completed article for my own use.
Can pay shipping too and from if someone will at least lend me a copy.

Thanks!

[meteorite-list] AD: Vintage Meteor Crater Memorabilia (Ad 11/12)

2018-11-20 Thread Bigjohn Shea via Meteorite-list
Dear Fellow Collectors,
Hope your week is off to a great start!

I have recently uploaded to the website some phenomenal vintage Meteor Crater
memorabilia. All are in great condition and they are very hard to come by these
days. They consist of the following:

Vintage Meteor Crater Ashtray
Vintage Meteor Crater Drinking Glass
Vintage Meteor Crater Salt or Pepper Shaker
Complete Set of Frasher’s Photo Cards of Meteor Crater

Additionally, I recently uploaded some former laboratory specimens of the
famous El Taco mass of Campo del Cielo. These were sourced directly from a well
published researcher who acquired them from one of the more prominent
scientists on the topic of iron meteorites, and on El Taco in specific. A
handful of these shavings have been arranged into custom displays which are now
available for a very affordable price on my website.

Please take a moment from your busy day to consider some of these unique
collectibles for your own collection.

[meteorite-list] AD: Shavings from the El Taco mass of Campo del Cielo (Ad 10/12)

2018-11-16 Thread Bigjohn Shea via Meteorite-list
Dear Meteorite Friends,

Hope you are all doing great today!

Recently I had the good fortune to acquire some former laboratory specimens of
the famous El Taco mass of Campo del Cielo. These shavings were sourced
directly from a well published researcher who acquired them from one of the
more prominent scientists on the topic of iron meteorites, and on El Taco in
specific. A handful of these shavings have been arranged into custom displays
which are now available for a very affordable price on my website. J

https://bigjohnmeteorites.com

Prior to this, I have personally never seen specimens of El Taco for sale
anywhere. Specimens of the named masses of more abundant historic irons like
Campo, Canyon Diablo or Cape York are generally difficult to acquire. They are
historic specimens, mostly in institutions, and they are generally not being
studied any longer so there is no need to cut them for other institutional use.
For these reasons finding a piece of (for example) “The Woman” mass of Cape
York with provenance to verify it, is very difficult if not impossible. The
same can be said for El Taco, an historic specimen that until today has been
scarce (if not absent) in private collections.

As usual there are also an array of other specimens available on my webpage,
not the least of them are some very affordable specimens of the legendary
Elbogen iron. Famed for the many stories surrounding it, such as its ability to
fly, or its creation by a witch who turned a cruel land owner into a hunk of
iron, Elbogen is a gem of a specimen that is always cherished in a collection.
It is worth every penny of the purchase price.

Please take a moment from your busy day to consider the specimens available on
my site.

Cheers!

website for now. I can send you photos if you are interested.)

Re: [meteorite-list] Michigan meteorite

2018-10-05 Thread Bigjohn Shea via Meteorite-list
Absolutely agree Paul.

Unless they can be verified by numerous independent eye witnesses, then stories
like that are really no more verifiable than a child’s fantasies.

Furthermore, since stories are unreliable, and it hasn’t been officially
classified yet, I don’t see any reason why it could not be a transported
specimen from another known find. For example, the Trenton irons from
Wisconsin. Not very far from Michigan at all... I suppose time will tell though.

2018-08-03 Thread Bigjohn Shea via Meteorite-list

Dear Fellow Collectors,
Hope you are all doing great!

I recently dropped prices for the specimens on my webpage. These are excellent
examples of rare meteorites.

https://bigjohnmeteorites.com

Yunnan, fall 6/1/2018 probable L6: A full slice and endcut of the latest
Chinese fall available at literally the lowest price anywhere.

New Halfa, fall 11/8/1994 L4: Relatively large full slices of a poorly
distributed fall from a difficult to acquire locality.

NWA 11805, Polymict Diogenite: Full slices of the main mass of this attractive
HED specimen.

NWA 11359, L6: A very porous and highly recrystallized blue/grey chondrite.
Full slices of a very interesting meteorite.

N’Goureyma, Mali iron-UN: One of the great oriented specimens in meteorite
history and very rare in private collections as a result.

Last but not least, I have 115 of the large standard acrylic display cases with
white poly-fill available for 2$ per case.

Please take a moment from your busy day to consider one of these unique
meteorite specimens!

Hope you have a great weekend ahead of you!

Dear Fellow Collectors,

Hope you are all doing good.

I recently got a shipment in of the 85 x 60 x 25mm acrylic padded boxes we

to this ad, and have put the remaining available boxes up on my website.

https://bigjohnmeteorites.com/product/large-85-x-60-x-25mm-acrylic-white-padded-box/

I can only sell what I have in stock for now, but if these sell out and you
still wish to place an order, please contact me off list. I get shipments of
these frequently and can fulfill your order sooner than later.

Additionally, I have a few remaining full slices of the Yunnan, China fall from
6/1/2018, as well as a few beautiful slices of the New Halfa, Sudan fall from
11/8/1994. New Halfa is very rare in private collections, so get one now while

[meteorite-list] AD: Yunnan, China 6/1/18 Fall, New Halfa, Sudan 11/8/94 Fall (Ad 4/12)

2018-07-04 Thread Bigjohn Shea via Meteorite-list
Dear Meteorite Friends,

Hope you all have had a great start to your week!

I recently uploaded to my website a selection of slices from two noted
meteorite falls.

First: The Yunnan, China fall of 6/1/18. The cut surface of this fall is quite
lovely, more abundant in chondrules than you might expect for a probable L6. As
far as I have seen, I am the only person listing slices of the Yunnan fall and
there are only 5 on the site to pick from…

Second: The poorly distributed New Halfa, Sudan fall from 11/8/94. I can only
account for less than 1kg of New Halfa in private collections so these
relatively large specimens are very rare indeed.

https://bigjohnmeteorites.com

These are both beautiful and exceptional specimens that reveal an abundance of
chondrules ready to appreciate grossly or through the loupe. Definitely worth
adding to your collection.

If you are a fall collector then today is a very good day for you. :-)

Additionally I have a selection of Polymict Diogenite specimens still available
which were cut from the main mass of NWA 11805.

Please take a moment from your busy day to see what is available on my site.

Re: [meteorite-list] Toxic Giant Hogweed Spreading - Warning to Meteorite Collectors

2018-07-03 Thread Bigjohn Shea via Meteorite-list
Giant Hogweed is definitely no joke.

I saw a child once in an ER who had lost sight in his left eye after getting
the sap on his face. Also it’s very hard to get rid of if it’s growing on your
property. An expensive clean out, like many invasive species.

A good one to watch out for when out hunting.

2018-06-11 Thread Bigjohn Shea via Meteorite-list

Dear Fellow Collectors,
Hope you are all doing well after an enjoyable weekend.

Not long ago I was fortunate to acquire the main mass of NWA 11805, a recently
classified Polymict Diogenite that was brought to classification by fellow IMCA
member, Chris Colvin. I cut slices of the main mass and have listed some of
this rare classification for sale on my website at an excellent price per gram.

https://bigjohnmeteorites.com

It is a complex and stunning specimen with a delightful smattering of
orthopyroxene clasts situated within a complete breccia composed of diogenitic
mineral debris, microgabbroic eucrite and lithic diogenite clasts. This is a
truly excellent specimen to study under the loupe.

Please take a moment from your busy Monday to check out the deal on this
attractive classification.

Furthermore, if you’re going to Ensisheim for bargains, then start your hunt
right here because I’ve lowered prices on many of the other specimens on my
webpage. This makes for unbeatable deals on other rare specimens, like my last
slice of the recently classified sHL sub-group iron meteorite from the hot
desert.

Please take a moment from your relaxing Sunday to check out some of the
specimens.

[meteorite-list] Ad: Reduced prices on my website (Ad: 1/12)

2018-05-22 Thread Bigjohn Shea via Meteorite-list
Dear Fellow Collectors,

Happy Monday!

What better way to start off your week than to acquire a few meteorite
specimens at truly great prices.

In an effort to clear some inventory for the forthcoming update of my webpage I
have dropped prices on nearly every specimen on the page. Some of these prices
are simply no brainers for people who are interested in a rare classification,
a hard to find historic specimen, or a quality individual from the hot dessert.

Please follow the link below to check out the bargains.

Hope you all have a great week ahead of you!

Re: [meteorite-list] Roman Meteorite Coins

2018-04-17 Thread Bigjohn Shea via Meteorite-list
Almost certainly lost to history, Yinan.

There is one ancient baeytl still around that is not of Roman origin, but
instead Islamic. That being the Black Stone of Mecca, also called the Al-Hajaru
al-Aswad. Some have suggested it is a meteorite. Of course no testing has been
done to verify this...

http://www.ancient-origins.net/artifacts-other-artifacts/kaaba-black-stone-holy-stone-outer-space-003661

Given the locality, I wouldn’t put it past the realm of possibility. Even in
that region though, after 1000+ years without appropriate climate control, any
iron bearing meteorite specimen would certainly no longer appear as black as
the Al-Hajaru does.

[meteorite-list] AD: Rare NWA iron subgroup, rare USA meteorites FS (Ad: 12/12)

2018-04-10 Thread Bigjohn Shea via Meteorite-list

Dear Fellow Collectors,

Hope you are all doing well this week.

I recently updated my website to include some great specimens of a rare NWA
iron subgroup, some very hard to find US meteorite specimens, a newly
classified small NWA eucrite and a few lovely NWA unclassified stone specimens.
Please follow the link below:

https://bigjohnmeteorites.com

Additionally, there are a handful of other meteorite specimens listed on my
site, including some slices of the highly recrystallized and porous NWA 11359,
a true rarity of a specimen with a very crystalline appearance. Truly a unique
specimen…

Please take a moment from your busy day to consider adding a few specimens of
these unique meteorites to your collection.

Cheers!

[meteorite-list] Ad: Unique specimens on my website (AD 11/12)

2018-03-26 Thread Bigjohn Shea via Meteorite-list

Dear Fellow Collectors,
Hope you are all doing well.

If you're looking for a truly unique meteorite specimen to add to your
collection, NWA 11359 is the one.

This is a very strange L6 with a moderate shock stage and very little
weathering. It is unique among the huge L6 classification due to a highly
porous matrix that is set within a heavily recrystallized meteorite. The whole
thing has a very crystalline or gem-like feeling to it with a subtle grayish
blue/green coloration. A selection of slices are available here on my website.

https://bigjohnmeteorites.com

Additionally, the new Niger impact melt we have all seen recently is very
attractive on the outside, but on the inside it is truly exceptional. Hidden
within its black matrix is a wonderland of metal flakes and inclusions,
scattered amidst an appreciable quantity of small chondrules. When slices are
polished at 3000 grit, it is gorgeous.

Of note to the NWA collector, I have two hefty slices available from a ~900g
probable pairing to NWA 8524. This is a relatively weathered but attractive
LL4-6 breccia with a great orange/yellow interior containing big, eye catching
breccia inclusions of various colors and some relatively large bits of iron.

Please take a moment from your relaxing Sunday to consider adding a few of
these interesting specimens for your collection.

Thank you for looking!
Cheers,

Dear Art,
Hope you are well.

I formally request that I be made a “Moderator” for the Metlist, so that there
is SOMEONE, who can put an end to this back and forth bickering when it gets
out of hand. Which it has in this scenario...

I have extensive experience as an Administrator for both the “Meteorites” page

“You, a thief, admitted by yourself, to stealing by claiming a pairing number
to John Higgins material. Mr. Higgins likely paid several hundreds of dollars
to have it studied and the grams donated as a type specimen.”

Seriously...?
This is why he’s a “thief”? Because he self-paired some specimens to a
meteorite that Higgins had classified?

This is a joke, right?

How about every merchant who ever self-paired a specimen to NWA 869? How about
every merchant who ever self-paired a specimen to Taza? How about every hunter
who self-pairs a specimen to a DCA in the US deserts? How about every merchant
who bought a bunch of NWA 6963 that was self-paired in Tucson this year, and
just listed it for sale on ebay?

Are these people all thieves too? Someone somewhere payed for all those
classifications and gave up the material for the type specimen, just like John
Higgins did.

Reign in your attitudes everyone. You don’t get to call someone a thief for
doing what many MANY other known merchants do every single day.

2018-03-12 Thread Bigjohn Shea via Meteorite-list
I have bought from the seller in question numerous times. He is very reliable,
after at least a dozen transactions...

As to whether or not people are willing to buy specimens that cost as much as
Black Beauty under the advertisement of a probable pairing, it is entirely up
to the buyer.

This is a topic that has been discussed to death. Probable pairings are simply
that, “probable” based on the knowledge of the seller, and the extent to which
the buyer trusts them. Labs have neither the time nor the manpower to verify
every specimen of every meteorite that gets sold. As a result, the trust
between buyer and seller is what is most important when buying probable
pairings.

[meteorite-list] Ad: Unique specimens added to website! (Ad 10/12)

2018-03-11 Thread Bigjohn Shea via Meteorite-list

Dear Fellow Collectors,
Hope you are all doing well

A handful of very interesting meteorite specimens have been added to my website.

First among them, NWA 11359. This is a very strange L6 S2 W1. It is unique
among the L6 classification due to a highly porous matrix that is set within a
heavily recrystallized meteorite. The whole thing has a very crystalline or gem
like feeling to it with a subtle grayish blue/green coloration. A selection of
slices are available.

Second, the new Niger impact melt we have all seen recently is very attractive
on the outside, but on the inside it is truly exceptional. Hidden within its
black matrix is a wonderland of metal flakes and inclusions, scattered amidst
an appreciable quantity of small chondrules. When slices are polished at 3000
grit, it is gorgeous.

Last but not least, two slices from a ~900g probable pairing to NWA 8524. This
is an LL4-6 breccia with an attractive orange and yellow interior containing
big course breccia inclusions of various colors, and some relatively large bits
of iron.

Please take a moment from your relaxing weekend to consider a few of these
interesting specimens for your collection.

https://bigjohnmeteorites.com

Much of the older content that was on my site has been removed, but there are
still some great NWA x specimens, as well as a handful of historic, planetary
and carbonaceous specimens available.

Thank you for looking!
Cheers,
John A. Shea, MD

There are none we know of.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.newscientist.com/article/2100887-canadian-meteorite-may-be-first-visitor-from-the-kuiper-belt/amp/

That article speculates that Tagish Lake might have originated from the Kuiper
Belt, but there is no way to confirm even that.

Maybe someday Voyager will send us back a useful bit of data that somehow can
connect a specimen to an interstellar source. ;-)

Additionally, the article is somewhat misleading on the actual appearance of the specimen. The MetBul listing for the meteorite describes it more appropriately as being brown and rusted.

One hundred years laying outdoors in that humid climate and it's still "black and gleaming"? Wouldn't it have rusted?

Alfredo,

I would agree that what the article stated was slightly misleading, but this is not the same meteorite as the one that is mentioned to have fallen 100 years before. They were just including that bit of information in the story as a nidus for the owner's interest in getting the specimen looked at by institutions.

Cheers,

John

[meteorite-list] AD: Dropped prices on specimens! (Ad 9/12)

2018-02-25 Thread Bigjohn Shea via Meteorite-list
Dear Fellow Collectors,

Hope you are all doing great!

Sent this earlier this morning but never saw it pop up on the list. Apologies
if this is a repeat...

I’m planning an update to my website soon and in an effort to clear some
inventory I have dropped prices on the majority of the specimens listed there.
Some of these specimens I’ve had up for a good long while, and if they don’t
sell before the update I’ll be removing most of them from the website to make
room for new content.

https://bigjohnmeteorites.com

At the above link you will find a variety of hard to find NWA specimens, rare
historic specimens, new slices of rare CO classifications, specimens of new
falls, etc. There is a little something for nearly every type of collector.

Please take a moment from your relaxing weekend to consider adding some
interesting specimens to your collection.

Cheers!

Re: [meteorite-list] Howdy list

2018-02-12 Thread Bigjohn Shea via Meteorite-list
Rick,
Hope you are well.

Like many meteorites that are more abundant (and therefor tend to drive prices
down) the rarity of more desirable features on such specimens is what justifies
a premium for a singular specimen. For this reason I agree that the specimen
you described would certainly sell at a premium. I don't personally think 10$/g
would be entirely unrealistic for it, though it may be hard though to find a
buyer for it depending on who you know...

The specimen you describe sounds like a nearly perfect example of an SA, though
I would say it could be one step closer to perfect if it had a label on it from
the Soviet Academy of Sciences, and came with some other old provenance card
from a prestigious European collection. I've seen an 80g, somewhat mundane
specimen of SA sell for 25$/g due to having a label from the SAS on it.

Re: [meteorite-list] AD -Auctions Ending Tonight and Tomorrow

2018-02-07 Thread Bigjohn Shea via Meteorite-list
And you seem to think that you can hide behind "the rules" while you insult
people.

Sorry. You cannot...

As for NWA 5000,
NWA 5000 is certainly an attractive meteorite (when the cut is large enough to
see it), and it goes without saying that the main mass was a very big lunar
indeed.

However, beauty and size do not matter much to scientists who study most
everything at the molecular and microscopic levels (and who have studied this
to death) and while beauty is important to collectors, it is mostly absent in
nearly any sub-gram specimen of NWA 5000, which are the only truly affordable
specimens for the average collector.

So sorry to say it, but the endless hype about it being "legendary" and "the
highest rated lunar in the world" gets really tired after a while...

Oh and some open questions to the list:

Highest rated by what scale? What organization? What true standard for "rating"
meteorites even exists? FYI, there is none... ;-)

Legendary by comparison to Allende? Murchison? Orguiel? Cape York? Sorry... NWA
5000 doesn't hold a candle to the real legends of meteorite history.

Last buy not least, my medical doctorate is very real. Much more so than the
"legendary" status NWA 5000. ;-)

Gotta get back to balancing room 2103's sodium now, so this will be my last
response to you, Adam.

Goodbye.

Thank you, Darryl.
Glad someone else said it. I would have pointed it out myself but I already get
enough blowback and crudeness from Adam via his unwelcome "private" messages to

Re: [meteorite-list] Current Sericho Habaswein Pallasite Prices

2018-01-17 Thread Bigjohn Shea via Meteorite-list
As mentioned before, those really are not good quality specimens. Not very
representative examples, Adam.

Also the 2kg or bigger specimens/lots of Hasbaswein have been selling for
0.50$/g or less from the source for months now.

Regardless of size or price changes (which are temporary anyhow) once the
supply dries up people will wish they had gotten the specimen they wanted when
they could.

Steal of a deal on a big NWA Eucrite end cut!

Really nice to see ads from people who aren't just selling the same old lunar

[meteorite-list] AD: New specimens added to my website! (Ad: 9/12)

2018-01-04 Thread Bigjohn Shea via Meteorite-list

Dear Fellow Collectors,

Hope you are all doing great, and that your New Year is off to a good start.

I added some lovely meteorite and impactite specimens to my website. Notably: A handful of fresh NWA-X at various sizes, a rare US iron from the state of Wisconsin, a gorgeous Wabar Pearl, some more fragments of the Ejby fall, and a few other interesting specimens.

Additionally, there are dozens of other specimens that are still available at exceptional prices.

Please take a moment from your busy day to consider an addition to your collection.

Cheers!

Re: [meteorite-list] Stability of Sericho (Habaswein)

2017-12-04 Thread Bigjohn Shea via Meteorite-list
I got my sealed full slice of Habaswein from Rob many months ago and don't see
a lick of rusting on it. Sealant appears to be working great. :-D

If I were in the market for a specimen, I'd listen to the guy who actually has
experience working with the meteorite in question.

Additionally,
Large multi-kg specimens of Habaswein do sell in the 0.5$/g range. Expertly
prepared slices do not. They sell for 8-10 times that price. That distinction
needs to be made.

I think most of the list members are just ready for this conversation to go
away, and I really don't blame them... So I'm going to stop contributing to it.

I will add that whatever I have contributed to the world of Meteoritics, Martin
has contributed an exponentially greater amount.

Take care, Adam...

That's really sad, Adam...

How sad that after all your years of life and experience in the meteorite
world, you failed to develop the skills you need to face a challenge from a
peer with some dignity.

Re: [meteorite-list] Lots of Gold and Meteorites on Heritage Auctions

2017-11-03 Thread Bigjohn Shea via Meteorite-list
"Self-pairing is a slippery slope. Allowing laymen/dealers/Moroccans to
classify their own stones opens up the entire meteorite collectable sector to
fraud."

Hence my condition that the seller needs to be "reliable". A subjective term,
yes, but it is impossible to formally pair every stone. If that were the
expectation from collectors then very little material would change hands...
Also, that is the slippery slope we live on. The only slope we live on. More on
this below...

"Collectors deserve to know what they are getting and how much by weight is
really available."

Black Beauty sells high because it's an interesting classification, not because
of low TKW... Low TKW alone is not a great motivating factor for collectors.

"Unfair trade practices are at an all-time high when "dealers" fail to report
accurate weights and number of stones."

Report to who? Report by who? I can't call up the MetSoc and say, "Hey I found
ten more pieces of BB. Add these 80g to the TKW." It doesn't work that way. Not
every specimen can come in form of an 11.53kg single mass with no pairings...
;-) If I want to formally pair ten pieces as paired to the original BB, all ten
of them need to be studied, and have a classification written for them. What if
9 of them weigh less than 4g? Who's going to sacrifice 20% plus another 1g for
a thin section plus cut loss of those 9 specimens weighing less than 4g that
they paid 500$/g to a Moroccan merchant? Apply that same logic to every other
DCA worldwide and you'll need a workforce of scientists that cannot exist, all
trained to handle the load of pairings.

We don't live in the reality where every piece of meteorite that should be
formally paired can actually get formally paired, and I doubt we ever did or
ever will. We live in the reality where buyers and dealers are responsible for
deciding whether or not they are really buying BB (or any other specific
classification) when they are buying a specimen that hasn't been formally
paired. If they can't do that, then they should only buy from people who they
consider trustworthy.

Stepping off my soapbox...

Have a good one.
John

Sorta feels like we are rehashing an old topic in a new form here...

It is common and even justifiable for people to be attached to the concept of
formal pairings and classification for specimens, particularly when they pride
themselves on selling specimens of a well known classification.

However, like most items in the world of collectibles, who you buy from is just
as important as what you are buying. If the source is reliable, then the
"self-pairing", or "probable pairing" can obviously be trusted.
