[meteorite-list] Tagish Lake prices

2008-06-21 Thread Dave Harris

Hi folks,

Just been trying to get a feel for the price per gram for TL - looking at
pieces around 100mg - not to purchase but I have about 0.3g of the stuff and
when I googled it I found it difficult to pin a price on it - I've seen it
for $2 per milligram (which sounds very dear!) and Eric has none left on his
site for me to get prices - I have bought some from Eric but I never keep a
note of the prices (which maybe I should!)

Got an idea now.
Around $600 per gram - Seems not a bad price at all considering how weird
and rare this stuff is!

I should have bought more!
Anyway- that's being greedy - it's well represented in my collection.
The lesson here for me, folks, is to keep a log of the prices! Helps with
insurance cover and so on...

2008-05-16 Thread Dave Harris

Hi
I am sure I saw some reference on the list about these Nantan thinn sections
that appear on Fleabay.
Having just got a polarizing scope I just realised that they can either be
ruut t/s or completely opaque as Fe and sulphides are opaque to the standard
30 micron thickness, and would be a bit dull anyway - expecially looking at
rust!

How funny - shows I learnt SOMETHING already about mineral optics

[meteorite-list] happy surprise continued...

2008-05-02 Thread Dave Harris

Hello Dave;

Thanks for the positive, pleasant post about wayner44.He sure made your
day,i'll bet,and you sure made my day with such a positive post about
someone who

did good and we never would have known about it if you hadn't taken the time
to inform us.My hat is off to you.

Best Regards;Herman Archer IMCA 2770.

Thanks Herman I am glad someone had something to say that was in the same
spirit as my email!
As Herman says, this is a positive post, but I still see it didn't stop the
whingers! To all you moaners - when was the last time you refunded
shipping? When was the last time YOU gave an anonymous gift (without post
charging?)!

So he lifted some blurb - no big deal unless he did it all the time - he
obviously doesn't share our knowledge and enthusiasm and therefore
plagiarised because a) he assumed that it was no big deal - which a one-off
isn't - It is not the new Umberto Eco novel , it's an eBay listing, and b)
by lifting it he probably thought he was giving the best info he could as it
was written by someone who probably knew more about the field that he did.
Maybe he did email the writer and they never replied?
Get off your high horse for god's sake! Don't be so touchy! He went the
extra mile with no desire for credit - he has not even responded to my
thank you mails yet.
This sort of whining is why I lurk on this list - always someone who wants
to rain on someone else's parade. Very depressing.

I have a flat-rate charge for shipping. This is not just to cover the
physical act of paying for the posting but has to cover the cost of the,
say, padded bag ($0.80 or so), and my time - I have to use my lunch break
time to hang out at a crummy post office to get it sent - so I do a flat
rate - never had a complaint and would ALWAYS reconsider if the buyer
balked.

So allow me to enjoy my extra slice of Henbury and AML label, and let this
seller be.

[meteorite-list] What a surprise!

2008-04-30 Thread Dave Harris

Well,

I saw a thread about an eBay seller called Wayner44.

I have to tell you of my dealings with this chap.

I won a 33g etched Henbury ex AML with matching label for $40. I paid the
for the deal incl. shipping and the first thing he did was to refund me $9
as he found cheaper shipping.

Naturally I thanked him, I said I love old AML stuff and like to collect
specimens with matching labels...so today, as I got home from work, there
was another package waiting for me - no letter, no nothing, just another 28g
ex-AML Henbury.

I only know that it came from Wayner44 as his name was on the packet.

I am astonished at this act of altruism!
A big thumbs-up to this fellow!

[meteorite-list] NWA 4925 Martian

2008-04-12 Thread Dave Harris

Hi Folks,
Well, Mr Postman has just called and delivered unto me my fantastic 1.234g
absolutely perfectly prepared slice of NWA 4925, the new Shergottite from
Martin and Stefan.
I don't, if ever, rave about my new additions to my collection but this has
to be bigged up as we say in our 'hood (sorry something's must have come
over meexcitement I think!)

This is a most beautiful meteorite indeed - apart from the fact that it is
the largest of any of the Martians or Lunars in my collection, a veritable
paving slab indeed, the colourings within this rock is a sight to behold!
As much as I love Zagami, it is relatively featureless to look at, but this
new NWA is a kaleidoscope!

Polished to perfection, this will take pride of place in my collection. I
really can only start to appreciate the efforts required by ALL of you
meteorite finders and the fact that due to your efforts, li'l ol' me can
actually have a piece of the planet Mars in my lounge!

It can sometimes take a piece of rock like this to make one stand back and
TRULY appreciate what it ACTUALLY is...I can physically hold a piece of rock
from another World. I know I am stating the obvious, but I am a little over
excited! No matter how long I have been collecting space rocks, sometimes it
takes a piece of this rarity to know that it is a tribute to all of you hard
working folks who find this material, analyse it, learn from it and that I
can have the privelege of owning a piece of Mars, for real!

Yep, I'm raving I know that but dammit! I'm really excited! I look forward
to doing school talks and wielding this piece and talking them through it.

So, if you do not have any of this particular NWA - then get onto Martin
Altmann or Stefan Ralew NOW and buy some! Look at the prices! Would you
have ever believed that one could get a Martian specimen for less than $1000
per gram?!!

Martin Stefan - I truly truly appreciate the specimen more than you will
ever know.

I am blown away.

I am going to sign off now - I need a lie-down with my Martian!

Best regards,

Dave

[meteorite-list] re How do you know it's a meteorite?

2008-04-09 Thread Dave Harris
I get asked this question often - and I always split it in two - I say If
you mean ,how do I personally know it's a meteorite?', then I reply,
because I purchased it from a specialist dealer/university/museum or what
ever...
I then rapidly follow it up with if you mean how do _we_ as humans know it
a space rock...? then I briefly explain just some of the tests (isotope
ratios, age of material so on)

That generally satisfies most questioners of all ages it seems - not ideal
but when a neophyte is presented with a small piece of rock the size of a
findgernail, it is often difficult to even make them understand that the
rock they are holding is a fragment of a larger piece - I often get asked
how do they find them when they're so small for example when holding a few
milligrams of Martian.

Hi,
Well, for the record, I have bought stuff over the years from Michael and
found him a perfect gentleman and supplier.

I am a little alarmed at the viciousness of the emails sent in complaining
about him and I feel that a more discrete approach should have been adopted.
I am not surprised that Matteo jumped on the bandwagon here with his litany
of problems because he very rarely seems to have anything positive to say
about any dealer, only negative stuff. I do feel sorry for Matteo as he
really does seem to have a lot of problem with meteorite dealers for some
reason...

Please can this matter be redirected off-list as I do not want to see yet

[meteorite-list] techical advice

2007-06-17 Thread Dave Harris
Hi

One of my lumps of LDG has a very small (3mm) chip in it - ordinarily it
wouldn't bother me at all, but it's left a teeny sharp pointy bit sticking
out that always catches one's hand.

What would be a appropriate way to remove this point? My initial thought was
to carefully play a blowtorch across the asperity to melt it down and reduce
the sharpness, but would i end up with an exploded, thermally shocked
handful of glass chips?

Abrasives could also be used, but I'd feel more comfortable with a blowtorch
and being careful( used to make glass labware when I was a kid - not too
successfully, but without serious accidents!)

Or should I just leave well alone?!

Anyone out there with experience with LDG?

Do you all know what I have noticed over the last few
year? That the majority of people on this list seem to
care much less about real meteorites than they do
about fakes! This thread is a perfect example which
makes me sick. Many of us (Robert Haag is not on this
like for this very reason) have been discussing the
simple fact that now days, when a new meteorite falls,
or is found, there tends to be crickets chirping after
it is announced.
For example, last Friday I announced and showed the
first photos of a new pallasite, one of ~55 known, a
pretty interesting and in the world of meteorites, a
big thing. There were few comments about it. Even
though I asked a question hoping to start some good
discourse and get some information from this list, all
I got was Matteo's usual tirade of complaints.
Virtually no-one cared about a beautiful new
meteorite.
Now, today we have another nut job out there, who does
not want to hear the truth, and half the people on the
list see fit to discuss his fake meteorites. My point,
many people on this list do not care about real
meteorites, they want to fight/argue/complain/debunk/
and otherwise mess with non-issues rather than comment
on actual meteorites.
Who cares if some guy refuses to accept the truth that
his rocks are just that, rocks? Yet this list goes
berserk over such a boring issue.
Why is this?

Thank you for your offer of material.
If you had any real involvement in true meteorites
 you would know that there
are a variety of technical protocols they have to
 undergo for formal
identification and cataloging - a process that takes
 a couple of years
 sometimes.

We are quite happy in the knowledge that this
 material is not meteoritic,
they have not been submitted to the correct
 institutions for analysis, nor
have they been published in any of the recognised
 papers.

The anecdotes you relay regarding recoveries are
 totally at odds with
hundreds of years of falls and finds and I can
 assure you that mineral
phases that you describe occur on Earth too. But you
 do not find silica!
There is more to meteorites than isotopic analysis,
 what about presolar
gases, nanodiamonds, kerogens, shock glasses, IMBs
 and so on.

I am concerned that you have been mis-selling your
 material and I would like
a complete list of all of the individuals you have
 been using for analysis
and also the institutions to whom you have been
 selling it to.

Your tests prove nothing - anyone can crib data and
 attribute it to their
piece of rock. Have you sent any material to Dr Jeff
 Grossman, Dr, Monica
 Grady, Dr. Sara Russell?

As much as I'd like to continue this discussion, I
am afraid that I can see
that, like everyone I have received meteorites
 from, and have had them
resolved as terrestrial material, just do not like
 to believe their rocks
are ordinary. I guess it's human nature.

Electron microprobes, XRD and XRF will tell you
 nothing if you do not
compare it with the real thing, Mag Sus is not an
 important aspect of
meteorites as their flux density is often changed by
 terrestrial influences.

Do as you wish, but being a registered dealer in
 Meteorites means
absolutely nothing - but of course, if you have been
 selling material that
latterly turns out to be fake, then you are
 responsible for making good.

I wish you luck in your endeavours and thank you for
 your time to reply.

Re: [meteorite-list] Your meteorite site

2007-04-10 Thread Dave Harris
Thank you for your offer of material.
If you had any real involvement in true meteorites you would know that there
are a variety of technical protocols they have to undergo for formal
identification and cataloging - a process that takes a couple of years
sometimes.

We are quite happy in the knowledge that this material is not meteoritic,
they have not been submitted to the correct institutions for analysis, nor
have they been published in any of the recognised papers.

The anecdotes you relay regarding recoveries are totally at odds with
hundreds of years of falls and finds and I can assure you that mineral
phases that you describe occur on Earth too. But you do not find silica!
There is more to meteorites than isotopic analysis, what about presolar
gases, nanodiamonds, kerogens, shock glasses, IMBs and so on.

I am concerned that you have been mis-selling your material and I would like
a complete list of all of the individuals you have been using for analysis
and also the institutions to whom you have been selling it to.

Your tests prove nothing - anyone can crib data and attribute it to their
piece of rock. Have you sent any material to Dr Jeff Grossman, Dr, Monica
Grady, Dr. Sara Russell?

As much as I'd like to continue this discussion, I am afraid that I can see
that, like everyone I have received meteorites from, and have had them
resolved as terrestrial material, just do not like to believe their rocks
are ordinary. I guess it's human nature.

Electron microprobes, XRD and XRF will tell you nothing if you do not
compare it with the real thing, Mag Sus is not an important aspect of
meteorites as their flux density is often changed by terrestrial influences.

Do as you wish, but being a registered dealer in Meteorites means
absolutely nothing - but of course, if you have been selling material that
latterly turns out to be fake, then you are responsible for making good.

I wish you luck in your endeavours and thank you for your time to reply.

Hi Dave, The 1728 pdf chart is used to show how exhibit 2 Mars meteorite
plots on John Brandenburgs oxygen isotope chart for CI / Mars plots, and
exhibit 2 Mars plots as a Mars meteorite, and all the test results offer
this proof as well.

The Oxygen Isotopes, Electron Microprobe, SM-30 Magnetic Susceptibility, XRF

[meteorite-list] Get a grip....

2007-04-07 Thread Dave Harris
Now, come on, get a grip you lot on the list - some of you are massively
transgressing the boundaries of common decency.

Any noobies coming to the list would be horrified to see the rubbish some of
you lot put out.

Get your acts together, stop this vicious bitching, act professionally, do
NOT rise to ignorant comments and let's make this list an informative list,
not a forum for slanging matches - Jeez, it's like bare knuckle fighting or
cock baiting with you lot.

Why Art doesn;t just step in and delete delete delete I do not know, but I
am getting increasingly fed up with this constant verbal jousting.

I want read about meteorites, anything space related, finds, ads - anything.

[meteorite-list] NWA 4485 boast

2007-03-31 Thread Dave Harris
Hi,

Just a word to boast that I am the very proud owner of a 0.315g slice of the
new KREEP-rich lunar thanks to Martin Altmann and Stefan Ralew of Chladni's
Heirs!

This is an astonishingly rare lunar (TKW 188g) - paired with Greg and Adam
s find - incredible under the 'scope and it has really helped me to research
and understand some of the complexities of Lunar evolution.

I am grateful for the opportunity to acquire this material at a VERY
acceptable price and I am amazed at my own reaction and sense of wonderment
of this rock.

I really need to know more about what I am seeing!

Good call, Chladni folk!

[meteorite-list] KREEP and SAU 169

2007-03-31 Thread Dave Harris

So, in the process of googling around I see that the only other KREEP rock
(other than the Hupe's and Chladni's paired specimens) is SAU 169 - which,
as far as I can tell has not been distributed into any private hands
(correct me, of course!)

The thing is about SAU 169 is that they have a pretty good idea which crater
the bugger was finally launched to Earth from, by careful and I think
clever analysis of the petrological history of the rock ( see http://tinyurl
com/ytufj6 )
they have managed to confidently predict which crater launched it into the
orbit that finally hit the Earth.
So, any ideas regarding the paired KREEP rocks and their 'parent' location?

[meteorite-list] new orleans fall

2007-03-11 Thread Dave Harris

Hi,
I received some of the very first stuff - picked up the next day in the
roadside by a friend of mine who is a pegmatist in the Uni of NO. He sent
me about 35g and virtually all was in fragments. It fell on my birthday!
The main mass went thru the roof of the Faucett's house.

Personally I have no idea where these larger pieces came from as the
Faucetts's were not selling and the only stuff I saw for about 18 months was
material very very similar to what I had. I sold a lot of my NO stash and
have about 7g left.
So I am bemused too about where all of these large fragments came from
because I do not recall anyone saying they'd found another large lump of NO
- as far as I knew there was the Faucett mass (which may be lost now since
Katrina - I don't know) and crumbs

Curiouser and curiouser

[meteorite-list] proud Tom

2007-03-05 Thread Dave Harris
Hi,

I have to agree with Mark Ford - I think it is a little dangerous to launch
into someone and take the mickey without their express consent. If Proud
Tom wants to do a friendly jibe on someone then I think it would be
appropriate, professional and respectful for PT to email the individual
asking his permission.
Otherwise, like Anne Black says - it does nothing for the Meteorite
Community, which is hanging by a thread at the best of times.

BTW - I take it no one was interested in the Ex AML Lalande!

OT - I know - as some of you know I also collect terrestrial rocks and have
just traded some stuff for what is probably the finest example of a
Uraninite crystal discovered - from Harvard originally and then via two
select collectors - look forward to having this nice hot shiny xl! Just
thought I'd share that!

wondering what the team felt about swaps ( BTW I have no intentions of

[meteorite-list] Enquiry to BIMS

2007-03-01 Thread Dave Harris
Hi tout le Monde,

I got a call from a chap in County Wexford in Ireland a couple of days ago,
excited about a find he got. Now, he has had some initial analysis done by a
chap called Professor David Green who works at the Manchester museum.
OK - fact - Dave Greene has XRD'd it and confirmed that this item is either
pure Mn or largely Mn - I am not sure which - this rules out it being
extraterrestrial.
I do have some pics - mainly blurry - which shows something rather like a CD
to be honest with you.

It was the location of the find that got this chap interested and as I know
squat about the location in the USA I'd run it by you for some answers.
The finder claims to have recovered this lump (looks about 200-300g in
weight) from the Cascades, near the Rockies, Washington, about 75 miles NW
of Seattle - I am quoting him here - I have no idea whether this
geographical relationship is true.
He advised that this is REALLY wild country and he was out there on a
exploratory trip armed with AK47s due to bears. Again - I am just repeating
what I was told.

He has been contacting a friend who lives in Darrington wa state again, I
quote from an email.
Prof Green is certain it is NOT meteoritic, no troilite inclusions and
suggested that is it the product of a manganese mine (which was my original
suggesttion). However the finder is CONVINCED that the are this lump was
found is totally off the beaten track.

Do any of you know this area? Are there Mn mines out there?

I just would like to show the finder that I have made every effort to
resolve his mystery lump of metal.

thanks!

[meteorite-list] Hambleton Pallasite - reprise

2007-02-24 Thread Dave Harris

Folks
...just an observation a couple of weeks ago I mentioned a very
significant find in the UK by Rob Elliott re the Hambleton Pallasite - d'you
know I had 2, maybe 3 emails on the subject? One to diss it and the other to
buy some. No thread, no discussion, nada, bupkiss,nowt...

You guys have been going on about Holbrook as if it was the most important
thing in the world and also on and on about this speculative Peru fall - isn
t this all a bit parochial? Is the Hambleton pallasite really that boring?
Maybe you all know about it already and I'm just slow to get on the boat -
that is quite possible too.

We seem to get stuck in a rut and go on and on and on about it - and
important finds, if they occur outside the US are of no interest whatsoever
unless someone can get to the location and make a buck out of it.

Are you really not interested in what is probably the most important
meteorite find/fall in the UK by one of the world's top dealers?

Seems this list is only interested if it anything to do with a USA fall/find
- even if it is a common place L6. That is my perspective and opinion - and
possibly incorrect - but I have seen days and days of stuff on Holbrook,
Venus meteorites and so on.

Sorry if this seems a bit of a rant, it's not meant to be, just an
observation, but from here in little itty-bitty UK (51st state of America),
I am surprised that no one had any real questions regarding this fantastic
find.

Thanks for your attention - please refrain from flaming me!

ciao!

Re: [meteorite-list] the hambledon pallasite

2007-02-08 Thread Dave Harris
Not mine - Rob Elliott's - it's on loan for a show, but yep - that xl took a
lot of looking at too - personally I think it is terrestrial. Under the
scope the xl is embedded in the loose, almost Caliche type weathering on the
very crust - it would need XRDing to check it out but I think it is a pyrite
xl -silvery and not, as far as we can tell transparent/transclucent
It is far out - what a slice of heaven I tell you!

WOW Dave! that seems to be a complete euhedral crystal
Is that a spinel, magnetite, chromite? Regardless
perfect crystal growth like this in a meteorite is
ultrarare.

Is this one of the pyroxene bearing pallasites?

Inquiring minds.

Really interesting piece, Congratulations.

2007-01-24 Thread Dave Harris
Hi Frank!

Thanks for the 101 on IDing and classification of meteorites! Brilliant -
now I wish I had a bunch of thins sections, a petrological scope and you
next to me pointing out the obvious!
This is an arcane art!
Much appreciated

[meteorite-list] Bidding on Screwbay

2007-01-16 Thread Dave Harris
Hi Graham
Jeez, that IS odd!

You are right - I think it is best to see all bidders - other bidders can
spot a trend in shill bidding as well as the other benefits you mentioned.

I really wonder what their motive is here... most auctions are open...

[meteorite-list] NWA 3159 - Vesicular, plutonic eucrite with (pre-)terrestrial crystals?

2007-01-13 Thread Dave Harris
Hi,
My Mt. Taz definitely has euhedral crystals in the vesicles - unfortunately,
my binocular microscope only magnifies to about x35 or so and they are very
small (very sub-mm ) but become apparent when the specimen is tilted and the
light glints off the faces.

The structure is typically pyritohedral in shape - I am assuming (a
dangerous thing to do) that these are Troilite xls.

..and I never got a response as to what gases made the vesicular structure!

Best

Sorry - I know I shouldn't laugh, but this was really really funny! Like a
Marx Brothers movie on LSD!

And yes, I do credit him with the fact that he probably speaks English
better than I speak Italian - but if I could speak Italian I am sure I
wouldn't spout such disjointed and surreal rubbish!

Well - that's todays laugh of the day.

[meteorite-list] Vesicle gases

2007-01-06 Thread Dave Harris
Hullo

On a more serious note, and I think I have asked this question before but I
do not recall any answers - I was looking at my Mt. Taz again and checking
out the vacuoles that spongify (!) the rock - so what gases were inside the
rock to create the pores (like Ibitira).

I can understand gases from planetary sources (same mechanism as pumice
creation on Earth) but can't be certain that these gases in Taz, or Ibitira
would be the same.
Does freshly cut Taz have a distinctive odour?

Any ideas? Any research papers?

Yours, in search of knowledge,

Dave
