Re: [meteorite-list] [IMCA List] Dave Gheesling

2020-11-11 Thread John Cabassi via Meteorite-list
My heart is broken. Dave was a man of integrity and for whom I have
great respect.
He has supported me in many ways. I've shared a beer and I've shared
some tears with him. He stands as an icon in the meteorite community
and a great family man.

Both Kat and I send our love and prayers to the Gheesling family,
especially Maddie and Kasia.

Dave was a truly genuine person and I am so grateful to have been his
friend and a part of his life. Rest in Peace my friend

Interesting. Do you remember this Elton Jones? I sent you a box of
samples with similar spherules from Chesapeake many, many moons ago
and you were waiting for time on the SEM. Still curious. I gave you
all of my samples hoping on a response?

Re: [meteorite-list] acid for pallasite

2016-09-20 Thread John Cabassi via Meteorite-list
Francesco and All,
I understand where you're coming from. You have a pallasite slice/end
cut that apparently was not cut properly. By that I mean, the final
prep work so you have some moisture trapped inside the item which has
led to rust developing between the iron/nickel and the
olivine/peridot. The olivine/peridot has popped out but because it
has accumulated rust residue, it won't go back where it came from. I
suggest drying it out manually cleaning up the rust on the surface of
the olivine/peridot as well as cleaning up the actual socket (I
haven't used that one in a long time) that the olivine/peridot has
fallen out of.

I would not go to the point of acid. I would put on some glasses with
magnification, spend a little time slowly cleaning up both surfaces
and proceed with putting the jigsaw back together

Cheers
John

NASA: There is No Asteroid Threatening Earth
 Jet Propulsion Laboratory
 August 19, 2015

Numerous recent blogs and web postings are erroneously claiming that an
asteroid will impact Earth, sometime between Sept. 15 and 28, 2015. On
one of those dates, as rumors go, there will be an impact -- evidently
near Puerto Rico -- causing wanton destruction to the Atlantic and Gulf
coasts of the United States and Mexico, as well as Central and South America.

That's the rumor that has gone viral -- now here are the facts.

There is no scientific basis -- not one shred of evidence -- that an
asteroid or any other celestial object will impact Earth on those dates,
said Paul Chodas, manager of NASA's Near-Earth Object office at the Jet
 Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

In fact, NASA's Near-Earth Object Observations Program says there have
been no asteroids or comets observed that would impact Earth anytime in
the foreseeable future. All known Potentially Hazardous Asteroids have
less than a 0.01% chance of impacting Earth in the next 100 years.

The Near-Earth Object office at JPL is a key group involved with the
 international
collaboration of astronomers and scientists who keep watch on the sky
with their telescopes, looking for asteroids that could do harm to our
planet and predicting their paths through space for the foreseeable future.
If there were any observations on anything headed our way, Chodas and
his colleagues would know about it.

If there were any object large enough to do that type of destruction
in September, we would have seen something of it by now, he stated.

Another thing Chodas and his team do know -- this isn't the first time
a wild, unsubstantiated claim of a celestial object about to impact Earth
has been made, and unfortunately, it probably won't be the last. It seems
to be a perennial favorite of the World Wide Web.

In 2011 there were rumors about the so-called doomsday comet Elenin,
which never posed any danger of harming Earth and broke up into a stream
of small debris out in space. Then there were Internet assertions surrounding
the end of the Mayan calendar on Dec. 21, 2012, insisting the world would
end with a large asteroid impact. And just this year, asteroids 2004 BL86
and 2014 YB35 were said to be on dangerous near-Earth trajectories, but
their flybys of our planet in January and March went without incident
-- just as NASA said they would.

Again, there is no existing evidence that an asteroid or any other celestial
object is on a trajectory that will impact Earth, said Chodas. In fact,
not a single one of the known objects has any credible chance of hitting
our planet over the next century.

NASA detects, tracks and characterizes asteroids and comets passing 30
million miles of Earth using both ground- and space-based telescopes.
The Near-Earth Object Observations Program, commonly called Spaceguard,
discovers these objects, characterizes the physical nature of a subset
of them, and predicts their paths to determine if any could be potentially
hazardous to our planet. There are no known credible impact threats to
date -- only the continuous and harmless infall of meteoroids, tiny asteroids
that burn up in the atmosphere.

JPL hosts the office for Near-Earth Object orbit analysis for NASA's Near
Earth Object Observations Program of the Science Mission Directorate in
Washington. JPL is a division of the California Institute of Technology
 in Pasadena.

insurance for Marissa should anything come up at the last minute. She

In addition to her powered wheel chair we have purchased a manual
bubble chair that is designed to be used on sand. If her powered
chair gets bogged down during the hunt we can switch to the back-up
which will be carried into the field on the roof rack of my 4x4. This
chair is being shipped directly to the town in Nevada where we are
 staying.

If any of you use twitter please be sure to follow her meteorite hunt

from the field (reception permitting), but at the very least we will

As you may have heard, there has been a major development concerning
the Gold Basin strewn field. Of course, it's possible this is not GB

Three years ago Joe Franske ventured to the north side of Lake Meade in
search of the big end of Gold Basin. According to Joe, it took him 6
tries to get to the right location, but once he did, it took him only 3
hours to find a meteorite. This is a monumental feat to say the least.
He brought me in on the project last March and I take no credit for
this discovery. Sure, we all had an idea that the strewn field crossed
the lake, we all drew lines, but only one guy had the steel to go get
it done. Hats off to Joe.

Joe and I have decided we are pretty much done out there for now. We
documented well over 100 pounds, most of which was found on the
south side of Jumbo Peak. Last week I extended the field another 5.75
miles with 2 finds on the north side of Jumbo, including
a 34 pound stone that was broken into many pieces. We decided to give you
 guys
 some details regarding the find
locations, hence this message, but in return we would like to know
 about
any finds you make so that we may continue documenting the strewn
field. Jim Kreigh, John Blennert and Twink Monrad did a fantastic job
documenting in the past and we would like to do the same. I know there
are some hunters out there that will not share and so be it, but most
 of us are
good people and I would expect some cooperation for the good of the
larger picture. Please send your reports to me so that I can share them
with the scientist involved with our work.

Joe found the first stone on the south side of Jumbo Peak and that is
where the majority of the finds were made. The area is only about a
mile wide and I highly doubt that defines the outer limits of the
field, however, to go farther east or west is difficult due to terrain.
Go onto Google earth and you will see the valley just south of the peak, and
 north of the park boundary,
 this is where you start.

On the north side of Jumbo Peak you will find most of the area too soft
for meteorite recovery. Decomposing granite has likely buried the
stones too deep for detection. In my mind it's a small miracle that I
found the 2 stones on that side. To put the difficulty into
perspective, we spent 36 man days to locate the 2 stones and out of
four hunters I was the only one to score. That place will hand your
 butt
to you on a platter, as they say.

 As a side note;
If you decide to give this place a try there are some things to
consider. To get to the south side of Jumbo you will need a 4 wheel
drive and it takes about 3.5 - 4 hours once you leave Mesquite. There
is no phone service and the road out wants to eat your truck! If you
go, plan to stay for several days at least, it's a lot of work and
expense just for a day or two.

If you have any specific questions feel free to email me.

Good luck and fair sailing to all who go!

Here's the low down on the science so far.

I submitted samples from my 16+ lb. stone (found March, 2014) to UCLA
 this past summer.
It did come back L6 as can be seen below. Dr. Kring wants to do
more work including cosmogenics and such, on several different samples
to help come to a conclusion as to whether or not it is indeed Gold
 Basin .

When asked how I know it's GB I say that the classification is
consistent, they look the same in hand, on the exterior and the
interior, and they are in line with the logical progression of the
known field. Sure, it could be something different, but simply put,
the easiest, most obvious and logical answer is usually the right
answer. I'd be very, very surprised if it was something else.

 UCLA (Rubin, Breen)

 received August 18, 2014, 2 pieces, 23.7 g
 L6 S4 W1
 olivine: Fa 23.9±0.2 (n=15); low-Ca pyroxene: Fs20.3±0.3 Wo1.6±0.2

plagioclase grains are typically 60-100 µm in size. The rock exhibits
weak mosacisim but does not contain maskelynite.

 Hello List,

As you may have heard, there has been a major development concerning
the Gold Basin strewn field. Of course, it's possible this is not GB
but the evidence looks very promising.

Let me hazard some wild guesses. I will disclose that I know jack
about Gold Basin except what the typical collector knows. I haven't
 read anything recently.

 Is it?

Somebody found tektites associated with the area?

 New overlapping strewnfield find?

New rules from BLM or state about hunting that area?

A crazy local homeless person stumbled across the a lunar in the
 strewnfield?

All sales of Gold Basin are hereby suspended until these questions are
 answered in an authoritative manner.

I think the bottom line is, it's illegal. I have watched introduced

genuine, the law is the law.

As for other comments on California, I think every state has a problem
in some way or another. As for here, gas prices are high, taxes are
high, freeways are congested and yes Michael F. it's a free for all on
the freeways.

What I'd like to see is the bullshit about dredging for gold in

for the environment, the fish love it. You stir up all that good food.
But try to tell that to the politicians. That's all I've got to say

I've been trying to get hold of a small portion of Broken Hill but it
can only be sold within Australia. Things were great before, but not
now. Can I have a piece sent to my mum and have her package it up and
send it out of Australia? Just curious. I think not. I would then
cause problems for my mother. But then again with Victoria, it's not a
problem, all the states in Australia have different rules. Damn, I
could turn around and declare my property here in Southern California
as Australian property.. an embassy so I can call diplomatic immunity.

But I think the bottom line is, you're crossing the line and asking
for some idiot to cause you trouble. Just my thoughts.

[meteorite-list] [OT] In Memory

2014-07-08 Thread John Cabassi via Meteorite-list
G'Day List

I met this really nice guy on SkyRock Cafe and for some unknown
reason, he really had an impact. He was also a contributor on the Met
List as well as my own forum. Over time, we became the best of
friends, not only with him but also with his family. I felt sorry
that he didn't have a detector and as I had a spare one, I sent one to
him. And it became a joke with us because the cost for shipping was
more than the value of the detector. Over the years, 2e exchanged
little trinkets, mainly for our wives, but meteorites were our
passion.

We communicated on a constant basis but then I lost contact with him.
I knew that the situation was getting a little rough in Venezuela.
But I always remember his words, Be Happy

I woke up this morning to an email from his wife, Mimi And this is
with a heavy heart, informing me that she had been trying to track me
down to let me know that Gian Gallo (Larense) had passed away.

Farewell my friend. You will be missed but not forgotten. The stars
are now your canvas. Have fun. Meteorites were your passion as well as
astronomy, being a veterinarian and your love for life big and small.

Sincerely,

 Now for another question:
Is the owner of a page, NASA in that particular case, able to clean up, so

 him/her?

For instance, if I had a Facebook page I would not want to see posts by some
of our most famous crack-pots tacked on it. Could I erase them and still
have a public page? I suppose my question boils down to: How much control
does one have over a Facebook page?

 Hi Anne and List,

Any Facebook page (personal or institutional) that is set on public
is visible to the entire world (including most search engines).
Anyone can view a public FB page, whether that person is a FB member
or not. However, if a privacy settings of that page are set to
friends only, then only a FB member who is also a friend can see
 that page or photo.

That is why NASA's page is visible to anyone, member or not.

Ruben's photos were likely set to friends only and therefore you
would need to be both a FB member and on Ruben's approved list of
friends. Such links will appear broken or blocked if clicked by a
 non-member.

Anne, you can filter out the trash by looking for a link near the top
of the postings section on the NASA page (or any institutional page).
You will see a little drop-down link with the options of see posts by
page and see posts by everyone (exact syntax may vary slightly).
Click on see posts by page and you will see the official posts by
page administrators. Otherwise, you see posts by every Tom, Dick, and
Harry - which greatly increases the noise to signal ratio.

 Best regards,

 MikeG

 Dear all -

I am writing to tell you about an exciting new free app.

It allows anyone to report a fireball sighting anywhere in the world. The
app is available for both iOS
 (https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/fireballs-in-the-sky/id709019924?mt=8) and
 Android (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tw.fireballs)
phones and has a very easy interface. Basically you point at the sky where
you think the fireball started and click on your phone, and do the same for
where you think you saw the fireball disappear. You can then input all kinds
of other attributes of the fireball. If enough sightings of a single
fireball exist, it will indicate that it was the real thing. Data from a
lot of areas will be collated to form a database of fireball trajectory data,
thus allowing more orbits of extraterrestrial material to be resolved.

This project is funded by the Australian Research Council and is called the
Desert Fireball Network. Information about the project can be found at:
 http://www.fireballsinthesky.com.au/

We would be very happy to receive comments, suggestions and feedback.

 Thanks very much.

 Dear all,

An updated and final version of the Chelyabinsk strewnfield map and trajectory
ground projection is now available at:

 http://www.meteorite-recon.com/img_inventar/Chelyabinsk_strewnfield_map_7500.jpg

 For background information see:

 http://www.meteorite-recon.com/en/Meteorite_Chelyabinsk_6.html

In March our calculations gave a window of 200 – 800 kg for the Lake Chebarkul
fragment. Our scenario and the resulting map used a conservative value of 300
 kg
for this mass. Now, after its successful recovery, the determination of its
approximate mass (~ 600 kg) enabled us to narrow a few parameters of the
trajectory and dark flight. The resulting minor changes in the final map are
 listed below:

 - The transverse displacement of the calculated wind shift discounted
impact point for the lake mass is reduced from 1.100 m to 950 m.
 - As a result, the trajectory is slightly displaced to the south, albeit
with the map scale used, the change is of no consequence for the depiction
 - Impact velocity for the lake mass is ~ 550 km/h instead of ~ 500 km/h
 - The altitude at which the transition into dark flight occurred is ~ 14
 km instead of 14.7 km

In addition to these changes, within the last two months a total of 34 masses
with documented find locations were submitted and successively added to the
 map.
These recently discovered masses range from 0.5 g to 1,440 g. The final
 version
of the strewnfield map now shows 285 find locations of Chelyabinsk meteorites,
of which 228 were submitted with their respective weights.

Karl and I would like to thank all contributors.

 Cheers

 Svend

 Hi Count,

I absolutely concur that Dirk's efforts seem to be appreciated by many, but
publicly acknowledged by few. So let me go on record thanking Dirk for his
tireless efforts -- more often than not, he is the first to report on a new
potential meteorite-dropping event, and his site is a must-visit for seeing
 early videos.

Unfortunately, I'm of the opinion that the San Luis Potosi videos are an
elaborate hoax, as the meteor cannot be confirmed using one of my reliable
sources. There was no bright meteor over central Mexico at any time from 4
pm to 6 pm local time (CDT) on 21 August, which corresponds to 21:00-23:00
 UT.

Apparently I'm not the only one of this opinion. Dirk forwarded me the
following link that he received from someone who has picked apart the four
videos. You can judge for yourself, but I think he/she has found some subtle
glitches and oversights that call into question their validity:

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5F7ySYpB1RMfeature=youtu.be

I am also bothered by the mismatch between the reported time of the fall
(~5:25 pm) and the sun's elevation angle -- particularly in the church
video. The sun appears to be very high in the sky for so late in the day.
And where are all the witness reports, or stories in Mexican newspapers?

Finally, two of the videos are too lucky, in the sense that they just
happened to be recording something rather un-video-worthy (some random train
from a car, and a poorly framed church tower) and the meteor magically
 appears.

What do you all think? --Rob

 Sayh al Uhaymir 559 (SaU 559)20°33.046’N, 56°39.336’E

 Al Wusta, Oman

 Found: Nov 2005

 Classification: Ureilite

History: During November 2005, John Blennert found a 107 g meteorite
 in the desert of Oman.

Physical characteristics: Exterior of the stone is rough, with
preferential (wind?) ablation of the pyroxene over olivine grains.
Difficult to cut, requiring seven diamond blades and one week to slice
the stone in half. Surface of the polished thin section is rough.

Petrography: Typical ureilite dominated by roughly equal proportions
of anhedral, fine- to medium-grained (0.5 to 1 mm) olivine and
pyroxene. No graphite visible in the thin section. Extensive reduction
of the olivine. Diamond abundant and confirmed by powder X-ray
diffraction. Diamond clusters to 20 μm visible with a reflected-light
microscope. Interstitial metal mostly altered to iron oxides.

Geochemistry: Olivine and pyroxene more reduced than in typical
 ureilites. Olivine cores have Fa5.2±0.1, FeO/MnO = 11.5±0.7, Cr2O3 to
 0.5 wt%, CaO to 0.3 wt%, n=13, rims to Fa0.5. Low-Ca pyroxene cores
 Fs4.7±0.1Wo4.89±0.04, n=7.

 Classification: Ureilite.

Specimens: 32 g and one thin section at ASU.

Subject: [meteorite-list] I've been a miner for a heart of

platinum (with apologies to Neil Young).

 Team Meteorite:

This 'string' regarding 'asteroid mining' has attracted the scholarly
attention of the Rubin's and Grossman's and seems worth tying into a
 couple more knots.

I'm all thumbs though when tying knots, so subject to peer review
which I will cheerfully accept from my uber peers Rubin and Grossman
(as well as my everyday peers on this forum).

. here's some more facts and data dug from two mining company
websites, hopefully properly interpreted by me, the mini-peer :)

On Earth, typically ten tons of ore must be crushed and refined to
yield one oz of platinum or platinum group metals (pgm).

 ***

That fact informs me that an unsupervised process in a harsh
environment like found on an asteroid in space will have a lower
 yield.

The main concept of all this discussion is that bulk rock has to be
processed for shipping in a small package.

Next up is an abridged description of the process of mining ore to
acquire platinum group metals(pgm), compiled/copied from two websites
of mining companies in Africa, probably the richest source of Earth's
 pgm.

 *Concentration

The ore is ground to liberate mineral particles. These are then
recovered in the form of a concentrate by froth flotation. The ore
mineralogy dictates both the fineness of grind required for liberation
and the ideal flotation conditions. Very fine particles are difficult
to recover, so two or even three milling and flotation stages may be
used to minimise losses caused by over-grinding.

There are minor differences in the details of the equipment and
operations employed processing a metallic concentrate rich in PGMs
is sometimes produced in addition to the flotation concentrate. This
concentrate can be sufficiently rich to by-pass the smelter and be
sent straight to base metal removal.

 *Smelting

The concentrate is melted in an electric furnace. Large units with six
electrodes in line are used for smelting concentrates.Upon melting,
the concentrate separates into two layers. The upper layer is a
silicate/oxide slag which is tapped off and then either discarded or
returned to concentration. The lower layer is a sulphide motto which
 is sent for converting.

The flotation-concentrate composition must be suitable for smelting.
Its rock mineral content should produce a fluid slag at the desired
temperature. At the same time, it must contain enough sulphides to
form a reasonable quantity of matter. To compensate for minor problems
with chemical composition, various fluxes are added. Typically, the
main addition is burnt lime or limestone but other materials such as
carbonaceous reductants, sulphides, oxides or silicates are used as
 necessary.

 *Base metal removal

Base metals are removed from the converter matte either by leaching or
by a combination of magnetic separation and leaching processes.
Problem elements such as selenium, arsenic and tellurium are also
removed. The concentrate which results is sent for further processing
into refined precious metals. Base metals are a valuable by-product of
PGM extraction. Their further refining by the various producers is
largely dictated by economies of scale.

 Refining

Precious metals refining processes have developed considerably in
recent years. The older or ’classical’ process involved first roasting
the PGM concentrate. This made the

about our public image and the division of labor within Chladni's Heirs. In
the end, in spite of a lot of discussions, we could not agree on necessary
changes. That is why business has more or less been in abeyance since
January. Since Martin had told me that he would take some time out because
of illness, I wanted to give him time for a final decision until his

For a few weeks I myself have already undertaken preparations to relaunch
my own business (SR Meteorites) because life continues.
I am determined to continue providing to all collectors the service and

I do apologize for this, but what I said was partly true.  There was indeed a

You can partly blame Mike Gilmer for inspiring me to do this by bringing his

 Hi Ed,

It would help to have a date and exact time.

Even if the cameras do not capture anything, an operator can go back and
make a movie (Sandia./NMSU network) for the time stated to determine if
there was anything out side of what triggers the recording to take place.

Subject: [meteorite-list] Slow Moving Fireball Over North Carolina

 Hi List,

I wanted to report on a personally witnessed, very slow-moving fireball
over central North Carolina, USA.  The fireball - so bright that it
illuminated the entire area as far as I could see.  Please believe me when
I say that it was as bright as day outside!  Never before have I seen
 anything any brighter.

Explosions were not heard, nor were there any break-ups witnessed.  The
fireball appeared first in the eastern sky, with a trajectory taking it
almost perfectly west.  Color was a bright white, perhaps slightly
yellowish.  I believe that I can say it was definitely not space junk.

Anyone have anything on their all-sky cameras?  Doppler reports?  Other
sightings?  This thing was HUGE, and I doubt that I was the only one to
witness it.  Although I have not heard anything on the local news channel.
Very strange since they manage to report on ingrown toenails, and poison
ivy rash inflicted on local residents.

If anyone can collaborate, it would be appreciated.  This has the potential
 to be something really big!

 Many thanks,
 Ed Deckert

Some of you may remember me from a couple years ago.

I have a really odd collection that is only comprised of 50mm Spheres.
Back when I started the collection I was really excited about it and  I was
able to get 19 different meteorite and meteorite related spheres but then it
just kind of stalled.  It became apparent that it would be very difficult
and expensive to expand my collection so I kind of lost interest.

Every once in a while I try to find some new material to make another
sphere but I'm just not as enthusiastic about the collection as I once was.

So I am thinking about selling it.  I don't think I would be willing to
part it out, it would be a bit to hard to see part of the collection on my
shelf so I am pretty sure that the only way I would sell it is if someone
 bought it as a collection.

I was wondering if anyone on this list would mind helping me determine the
current value of the entire collection

You can view it by pasting this url into your browser
 http://home.roadrunner.com/~bobadebt/

The images of the spheres on the web site are not photo shopped to look
perfectly round, the size and shape are as photographed with slight editing
to adjust the lighting and sharpness

I don't mind discussing the collection via the list but I would prefer
that all appraisals of my collection be sent to me via email to
 bobad...@ec.rr.com

I know that I have not been around for a while and that is due to many
factors that I would rather not go into but I hope I am not breaking any new
 rues by submitting this request.

 Thanks in advance
