Re: [meteorite-list] Not an answer they like

2021-03-19 Thread Larry Atkins via Meteorite-list

Tracy,
When I find myself in this situation I tell them they can be certain it's not a
meteorite because I'm not offering them any money! I tell them how important a
new find/fall would be and that if this was a meteorite, I would be connecting
them with an institution and offering cash. This usually gets the point across.
Good luck!

Re: [meteorite-list] Toxic Giant Hogweed Spreading - Warning to Meteorite Collectors

2018-07-03 Thread Larry Atkins via Meteorite-list
Graham's so right, it's hard to miss due to its size.

Common hog weed which is rather 'uncommon' here in Michigan gets to a maximum
of 6 feet tall, it truly is stunning with it's big tabletop size flowers and
huge leaves. Giant hog weed, invasive here in the states, is huge! By mid
summer the plants are 6 - 12 feet tall and are easily identified. I can't speak
accurately for the rest of the country but here in Mich the Giant variety is
extremely rare. I have 5 trucks on the road all summer long, out ridding the
good people of our state of their poison ivy and other noxious and/or invasive
plants. In all the years doing this we've only seen giant hog weed once.

So if you find yourself out looking for a piece of the Hamburg meteorite don't
worry too much about hog weed, but be very aware of the ubiquitous poison ivy!

Just learn to recognize it...which is pretty easy because of it's size...it is

Re: [meteorite-list] Ad 32 Auctions Lots of Good Deals!

2018-01-08 Thread Larry Atkins via Meteorite-list

Adam,

Man, you are killing me. Are you just bored? Why are you singling out me and my
auctions? I've never done anything to you, and don't say you are just trying to
protect me and other dealers, you are drawing undo attention, that's not
protection. Leave sleeping dogs lie. I can't believe that after the last few
years of watching you drag people into ridiculousville you've finally got me.
On one hand I really want to ignore you but I can't.

I sell once a year, enough to cover a tiny percentage of the costs of the
pursuit. I contribute valuable information and new meteorites to science as
often as I can, all with my own hard earned money. I started my poison ivy
control business 12 years ago just so that I could pursue meteorites and
contribute to the science. I spent thousands of my own dollars to open up and
document the Nevada side of Gold Basin, (which is now confirmed by Dr. Kring
and publication is pending.) How much sweat and treasure do you think Osceola
cost me? How about weeks and weeks on end for two winters in your back yard,
unraveling the Bullhead City strewn field all on my dime? I've worked very hard
over the years in my spare time to be a positive force in this hobby, sharing
with whom ever and wherever I can. And yes, I'm defensive right now because I
take your posts personally. I feel like you are trying to draw attention to me,
specifically, right now while my once or so a year ebay ads are running, and I
don't deserve that You should pick someone else to target, maybe someone that
is actually out doing bad things.

While I'm at it, if this was something that actually needed to be adhered to,
everyone that has ever bought a questionable meteorite should throw it in the
garbage right now. Universities and institutions that have procured these same
falls and finds should throw theirs on the burn pile too, or turn themselves in
and be prosecuted for trafficking. So as anyone of sound mind can see, that's
ridiculous and these laws are very much not unlike other b.s. laws of the past
and present, practically unenforceable and wrong to begin with. A crime needs a
victim by definition and I don't see a victim here. Furthermore, the stones
would have to be reclassified and proven to be legitimate, then in the case of
say Battle Mountain, Gold Basin, Franconia or Indian Butte, to name a few,
there is a checkerboard or mix of private / public land. Which stone is this?
Where was this particular stone found? Prove where the stone came from! And all
for what? What a joke, a complete waste of resources. It's like trying to
enforce sodomy laws or tell people they can't smoke weed, forget it. My
neighbor in Az is a county sheriff and I watch him do a rolling stop everyday
at the stop sign in front of the house, do I lecture him? Should I call his
boss? GET REAL. These laws you cite are wrong headed, or at the very least, if
used to prosecute a guy like me, that would not be in the true spirit of which
they were written. Despite the fact you say you don't agree with the laws, you
seem to be quite an outspoken proponent on this list, unless of course it
interferes with your pursuits.

Adam, I used to have great respect for you, and though I can't take away
anything positive you've done in the past, it would seem your days of positive
contribution are over. During the past several years your posts have
continually deteriorated in such a negative way that I don't respect you
anymore. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if you are the snitch you mention.
You're not my meteorite Daddy and I didn't ask for your advice or your
protection. Please do not comment on my posts in the future. Like I said to you
once in the past, relax man, get outside and go find a meteorite. Find
something constructive to do. Based on the emails, texts and phone calls I've
received today, many others would agree.

Sincerely,
Larry

[meteorite-list] Ad 32 Auctions Lots of Good Deals!

2018-01-07 Thread Larry Atkins via Meteorite-list

List,

I have 32 auctions running right now with some ending in about 24 hours. Most
started at .99 with no reserve and some still have no bids. There are a few
items rarely offered, like Osceola, the witnessed fall from Florida. Or NWA
11107 a rare eucrite melt. Right now there is a 2.8 gram end cut with only 2
bids, $2.51 at the moment.

Some other highlights would be the rarely offered Arizona find officially
recognized as Bullhead City. Another rarely offered Arizona meteorite, the
witnessed fall called Indian Butte, aka Stanfield. I have a low TKW Howardite
that is gorgeous, NWA 11184. It's a 2.71 gram full slice that is currently at
$13.00.

Don't miss the extraordinary Anda tektites. The first 2 I put up sold quick,
there are 2 more up with very reasonable buy it now prices and a quick search
on the internet will demonstrate the rarity, these things are practically
unobtainable.

Others listed are:
Holbrook frag's from my big find in 2007.
A 3.2 kg Gold Basin from the Nevada side.
NWA 6581 an LL6.
NWA 10140 Lunar 1 of only 2 anorthositic troctolite.
unclassified NWA type3 slices.
NWA 8663 A complete crusted eucrite stone with no bids and no reserve!

There are others as well, take a minute and check them out if interested.

Thank you.

Hello List,

I have listed some items on ebay, many starting at .99 with no reserve. You
will find some interesting items like Anda tektites. If you've never seen these
before they are certainly worth a look! I also have a few small samples of NWA
11107, a rare 1 of 11 eucrite melt breccia. There's a small piece of NWA 10140,
1 of only 2 troctolitic anorthosite lunar meteorites. There are many others
too, like Osceola, Park Forest, a multi kilo Gold Basin, an unofficial type 3
at only .99 to start and more. I'll be adding many others over the next few
days and weeks as well so check back now and then for new items. Visit my
website for sales and adventure too! CosmicConnectionMeteorites.com

[meteorite-list] Ad - and New Paper about Osceola

2017-04-14 Thread Larry Atkins via Meteorite-list

Hello List,

I thought I'd share some new things today. First, Alan Rubin has produced a
very interesting paper about some of the L chondrites in our collections, and
Osceola played it's part. Be sure to give it a read, I found it fascinating!
Here's a link to my Osceola page, Alan's paper is at the bottom. I still have
some Osceola available.

https://www.cosmicconnectionmeteorites.com/osceola/

I've recently had 3 stones classified and I was super happy with the results.
The first one is a case of redemption! I posted this one to the MPOD on
11/27/2015 and there was some doubt as to its meteoritic origins. Thankfully it
is a meteorite, NWA 11107, 1 of only 11 with this classification. I am open to
offers on the 2.5Kg stone.

NWA 11107 2.56 kg Eucrite Melt Breccia, 1 of only 11 This one is special. The
finder apparently burned some cloth on the stone when he found it, maybe giving
thanks? It's a must see.

NWA 11107 3.24g Eucrite Melt Breccia, 1 of only 11

https://www.cosmicconnectionmeteorites.com/shop/wwjgnwga3gn75luir7elwn9fvappze

This one was a bit of a surprise. The stone was quite dark and I wasn't sure
what to think of it, Howardite was not my first guess.

NWA 11108 5.74g Howardite

https://www.cosmicconnectionmeteorites.com/shop/nwa-11108-howardite-end-cut-5747-g

This one I pretty much knew was a howardite. One look and you will agree, It's
got that classic look! The pictures are a bit dark but it's actually very fresh
looking material.

Coincidentally, I made a cold find on Saturday as well. Mine looks completely
different though, much older, not as pretty.
Are you going to have it classified?

Re: [meteorite-list] Another Land Grab In Nevada And Utah!

2016-12-29 Thread Larry Atkins via Meteorite-list
Ben, List,

Ben says "The map of the Gold Butte National Monument that I saw on line,
went from the border of the Lake Mead Recreational Park on the west,
to the Arizona Border on the east and south, and almost to the the
highway near Mesquite to the north."

That encompasses the Nevada side of GB, game over! I sure am glad I got in
there when I did.

I think the vast majority of people are all for protecting archeological sites,
dino bones and tracks, etc. I sure am. However, I've always been a fan of the
'middle of the road' when it comes to many things, it doesn't always have to be
all or nothing. Closing off that much land makes no sense at all and Adam hit
the nail on the head, there's such a thing as over regulation. And hey Mike,
you don't have to make all that land off limits to stop trailer parks, be
serious friend. I spent weeks and weeks in the Gold Butte area and saw nary a
soul. This place has built in protections.. it's remote! The few people I saw
didn't even get out of the car let alone pillage and plunder, and again, like
Adam said, if thieves have a mind to steal, they will, and with impunity
because nobody is there to report them anyway. I'm all for protecting what
needs protecting but some of this stuff is out of hand. If laws are going to be
passed like this there should be input from the people that actually use the
land and have an interest in it, and some common sense should be applied.
An example of nonsense rules, I can't collect pottery chips or worked stone but
it's perfectly legal and okay for the cattle to pulverize it into oblivion.
That makes no sense and leads to a lack of confidence in the officials that
make the policies. Or how about not being able to swim in some of the
reservoirs in California because it's a protected water body, but look over
there, it's a herd of 40 cows standing chest deep dropping poop bombs into the
drinking water! Someone needs to explain the logic in these things if they
think it's the right way to manage the land.

We all know that prohibiting the collection of meteorites on federal land is a
bad idea. Those meteorites will never be found by scientists or "officials" and
thus will be lost to science forever. How about some compromise?

Larry Atkins

Re: [meteorite-list] Larry Atkin's New Website

Hi Adam, List,

Thanks for the compliment Adam. Yes, it took a few hundred hours or so to put
it all together, going through old computers of mine looking for images, trying
to remember details, and so on. The funny thing is that I left out so much!
I've already begun a new folder of images to add to the site. Also, I only put
a few items on the sale page to see how it works and I still need to load it
up, so stand by, there's more to come.

I looked at your pictures, Adam, nice work on the gold! I look forward to your
field report as I was quite intrigued with last years image of the large iron
mass on the mountain side, I can't wait to find out what it is and of course
hear about the 'treasure' you found.

p.s. Thank you to everyone that contacted me on or off list with your
compliments, corrections and advice, I greatly appreciate it.

Subject: [meteorite-list] Larry Atkin's New Website

Hi Larry and List Members,

Thank you for posting a link to your website I read through it with
fascination. It must have taken you several hundred hours, if not a
thousand to compile and author this awesome website. I have been to most of
the places you have posted here in the southwest yet we have never crossed
paths in the field. It proves, once again, that the southwestern US can
produce high levels of excitement and adventure, practically in your own
backyard, without ever having to step foot out of the country if you live
here.

I have not even had the time to post a field trip report on our grueling
2,200 mile plus, 2 week, September 2016 Team LunarRock hunt here in Nevada.
I was especially interested in your Battle Mountain trip report since we own
2,800 plus feet of Trout Creek front passing through one of our properties
in Lander County, Nevada. I wonder if meteorite hunters found anything near
the creek you mention that the trout disappear underground in the Battle
Mountain area. I did not find any meteorites in Battle Mountain but found
other treasure.

A few images of the third and fourth days of Team LunarRock's September
Trip:

Mountain):

What every gold prospector loves to see, a black pay streak! I have been
watching the GOLD RUSH show too much:

Gold clean out in the kitchen. I do not have a clean out shack like the
Hoffman's
http://themeteoritesite.com/adam/BattleMountainProperty2016/GoldSpiral.jpg

Results after four total hours worth of work including clean out:
http://themeteoritesite.com/adam/BattleMountainProperty2016/GoldFourHours.jpg

Maybe I will be able to find some time to do a full report of the September
Team LunarRock hunt which included some new members and some old ones. It
is full of twists and turns with a few of the previous year's mysteries
solved (curious iron stones and a giant unreachable crystal in a vug). A
few new mysteries were added on this years hunt which ended with finding
real treasure, besides gold, on the last day.

Best Regards,

Adam Hupe

the show, Michael flew to Florida to meet me. On December 8th we began our
journey to South America from Miami. Our travels would take us by air to
Aiquile by way of La Paz and then on to Cochabamba and then by private hire to
Aiquile. With no sleep for over 30 hours of travel from home to the dusty town
near the strewnfield, we were exhausted but too excited to rest. We went right
to work meeting with fellow meteorite hunter, Dario Ruiz, who had been there
for two weeks. He introduced us to individuals about hunting for meteorites or
buying some, but our hopes were quickly dampened by the news of the town’s
government putting up road blocks to deny access to the strewnfield. It turns
out that the officials were confiscating stones from the Quechua finders which
put them in a panic and afraid to talk to outsiders. Things quickly became
complicated.Dario, Michael and Greg in

went to ‘Plan B’ and were granted secret meetings with owners of pieces from
the fall. To our thrill and amazement, we were able to see several stones
ranging from small broken fragments to large kilo-sized pieces. Throughout the
48-hours we were on site we were told of several large pieces included a

missed greatly at the shows.

After I lost my dad in 2006 Larry stepped up and became my second Dad; and he

The shows will be a little sadder without his smiling face but I'm sure he will

Please send your thoughts and prayers to his family during this difficult time.

Today he invited Dustin Dickens and Myself to hunt what we believe is

Unfortunately, I can not divulge the exact location until the

However, here are some photos of our hunt and some of Myke's amazing finds.

[meteorite-list] Ad - Osceola Fall

2016-04-04 Thread Larry Atkins via Meteorite-list
Hello Meteorite Fans,

As you've probably heard, Osceola is now official!

In celebration, we would like to make some material available to the collector
market. A lot of people have been asking for it but we wanted to wait until it
was officially recognized.

There are a few interesting facts about this meteorite that I'd like to share
with those that are not aware. First, this meteorite is scientifically
interesting, more so than the average L6 chondrite. It is currently being
studied in the lab and results will be published in the near future. Next, this
is only the 6th meteorite from Florida and only the second witnessed fall from
that state. That's some of the lowest meteorite counts for any state in the
U.S., with only a few having less. This is the only witnessed fall from Florida
to become available to the collector!! The other witnessed fall (Orlando), was
a ~180g single stone and as far as I know it has never been offered for sale.
Osceola was the 9th fireball of 10, tracked down and located using Doplar
radar, a rare occurrence to say the least. Other meteors have fallen in Florida
and people have tried to find them but it's never happened, likely due to the
inhospitable hunting conditions. I'm aware of at least 4 parties that have gone
out on multi day hunts looking for Osceola without success. The remaining
meteorites are being assimilated, the swamp is consuming them and they are
turning into the Earth right now. It's unlikely that anymore than a stone or
two more will ever be found, let alone a mother load. This is a very rare,
collectible fall meteorite.

In hand the slices are quite nice. The material looks best unpolished so that
is how they are offered. With a hand lens, in good light, you can easily see
the abundant copper, as well as a host of other colors like green, gold, blue
and bronze, a whole rainbow unlike anything I've personally noticed in a
meteorite. There are a few thin shock veins, some black and some filled with
metal. Thin black fusion crust surrounds each slice, contrasting nicely with
the lighter, yet slightly shock darkened interior. The full slices range in
weight from 16 grams up to 41 grams.

If you've not yet read the story of the fall and recovery, go to
Mikesastrophotos site and check it out. He's written an exciting story with
lots of pictures. Space.com picked up the story too, as well as many others.

http://www.mikesastrophotos.com/comets/osceola-meteorite-recovery/

Space.com

http://www.space.com/32046-florida-fireball-meteorite-hunt-success.html

 You can also see a t.v. interview with me here;

http://www.news4jax.com/news/hunters-find-meteorites-in-the-osceola-national-forest

I've prepared an array of specimens to suit most collector budgets. Full slices
and large part slices will be presented in a high quality Riker Box with an
identification card. Smaller part slices and fragments come in a plastic gem
jar and include an ID card as well. Please keep in mind there is a very limited
amount of this material and it's first come, first served. There are 8 full
slices total, maybe only 7 if I need to break one up for smaller pieces. Out of
the 991 grams TKW there is about 400 grams total that will be made available.

Prices break down like this:
< 1 gram is $175/g
1 - 5 grams $150/g
6 - 10 grams $125/g
11+ grams $100/g

Email me off list for for inquiries and photo's.

Thanks and have a great day!

Sincerely,
Larry Atkins

chondrite (L6) History: (Mike Hankey, Larry Atkins, Laura Atkins, Josh Adkins,
Brendan Fallon, Robert Matson, Marc Fries) On Sunday Morning 24 January at
10:27 EST (15:27 UTC) a large daytime fireball streaked across the sky in
northern Florida. Over 100 eyewitnesses reported the event to the American
Meteor Society (Event 2016-266), describing a white sparkling head and plume of
white smoke left behind. Fireball researchers Marc Fries and Rob Matson, found
the American Meteor Society witness trajectory intersected with a group of
radar returns that appeared shortly after the fall. The radar returns were
strong, found at multiple altitudes and located on multiple stations: KJAX,
KVAX and KTHL. Larry Atkins was the first on the scene. Mike Hankey arrived 5
days after the fall with Brendan Fallon and joined Larry and Laura Atkins in
the hunt. On the 6th day, Mike Hankey found the first stone at 8.5 g on the
eastern edge of the primary radar return. Within 2 hours Larry Atkins found the
second stone (18.5 g) directly under the radar. The next day, two more stones
were found: a 5.5 g stone by Laura Atkins and a 48.5 g stone by Mike Hankey.
Six days later over 2 miles away from the first find, an 839 g mass was found
by Josh Adkins and Brendan Fallon. A week after that, Larry Atkins found the
last stone, weighing 75.5 g. In total 6 stones were found over a three week
hunting period for a total weight of 990.5 g. Physical characteristics: Thin,
well formed shiny fusion crust covers the exterior of four of the stones, while
two of them, the 43 g and the 839 g are matte black. This is likely due to
submersion in wet sand and/or water prior to recovery. Some small rust spots
are evident on some of the stones as well. Small regmaglypts are present on the
43 g and the 839 g stones, and the remaining stones are irregularly shaped with
little to no orientation. Some chondrules are visible through the crust. The
interior of the meteorites are slightly darkened due to shock. Shock veins are
present, some of which are black while others are filled with metal, appearing
as long "strings" up to 3 mm long. Though most of the chondrules have been
altered and are not well defined, some rare, large chondrules up to 0.8 mm are
present. Petrography: Plagioclase grains are up to 100 m in size, consistent
with type 6. No maskelynite was found. There are numerous chromite-plagioclase
assemblages, consistent with moderately strong shock. Chromite grains are
fractured. Troilite is polycrystalline. Metallic copper occurs as 2-m-thick
bands at the metal-troilite interface in an opaque assemblage. The chondrules
are recrystallized and poorly defined. The only discernible chondrules are
large ones, 800-1000 m across; these are BO and PO textural types.
Geochemistry: Olivine Fa23.70.3 (n=21), Orthopyroxene Fs20.20.2Wo1.60.2
(n=14). Also present are small grains of diopside: Fs7.4 Wo44.9 (n=1).
Plagioclase has a mean composition of Ab71.71.6 Or8.82.5 (n=8); the low Na
and high K values are a result of shock. Specimens: 21.8 g at UCLA

Hi Rob and List,

I can attest to the difficult terrain. I certainly picked a doozie for
my first meteorite hunt. Even though I have hiked much of Florida's
forests and backwoods, I usually avoid the swampy areas. I did not
have the luxury of avoiding swamp with this hunt. I brought my
hip-waders and managed to reach a few dry places that were surrounded
by water, but nothing was found. I am heading back before the end of
April for one last college try before I hang it up.

Did Arkansas Steve find anything?

Hi Mike -- best of luck on your next trip out there. For everyone to appreciate
just how hard the searching is there, it would be great if those that have been
could provide an estimate of how many hours they spent. Mexico Doug put in
a LOT of time out there. Obviously so did Larry, Mike, Laura, Josh and Brendan.
Steve Arnold was there at least 2 or 3 days but unfortunately w/o a space rock

Hi Rob and List,

I can attest to the difficult terrain. I certainly picked a doozie for
my first meteorite hunt. Even though I have hiked much of Florida's
forests and backwoods, I usually avoid the swampy areas. I did not
have the luxury of avoiding swamp with this hunt. I brought my
hip-waders and managed to reach a few dry places that were surrounded
by water, but nothing was found. I am heading back before the end of
April for one last college try before I hang it up.

Did Arkansas Steve find anything?

Best regards and Happy Huntings,

Subject: [meteorite-list] 2nd recovered U.S. fall of 2016 - more details

Hi All,

Some further information about the circumstances leading to the successful
meteorite recovery east of Lubbock, TX. First off, Mike Hankey deserves special
notice since often the first indication we have of a new potential fall is the
AMS website that he maintains. Marc Fries was the first to spot the nice
Lubbock radar returns for this fall -- less than 18 hours after the event! I
compiled those, and additional returns I found in the Amarillo radar, and
then went on a search for seismic signatures or videos that could be used
to pin down the time of the event. One Youtube video surfaced right away,
taken from a dashcam on highway 183 near Euless, Texas:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMkeVGSlV7o

Pat Branch did some quick work measuring terminus angles, concluding that
the vector lined up perfectly with the radar returns east of Lubbock. I soon
located two more videos, one from some still undetermined location near
Augusta, Kansas (east of Wichita) and some 580 km (!) from the fall:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPDoZYfH4ko

and another from a dashcam near Edmond, OK, north of Oklahoma City:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPb7jrtX4p0

Pat Branch was successful in contacting the driver of this car who provided
his exact location. There are numerous landmarks in this video that allowed
me to determine reasonably accurate starting and ending directions.
Triangulating
this video with the one from Euless led to a fairly steep fireball entry angle
and
a nearly due west trajectory.

However, upper atmospheric winds were relatively strong (over 100 mph to
the southeast,) and not surprisingly this is the trend we see in the radar
returns.
All that remained was to get an accurate time for the event so that meteorite
masses could be estimated (based on the time delay between the fall and
when various radar volumes were scanned). Unfortunately, none of the
three videos above has a sufficiently accurate timetag.

But here again Pat came to the rescue. Rob Ferguson (the provider of the
Edmond, OK dashcam) emailed Pat telling him that the fireball was also
captured by the Oklahoma Dept. of Emergency Management's tower cam,
and that a friend of his (Putnam Reiter) works there and pulled the video for
him. This has a great, unobstructed view of the event, being up on a tower
some 200 feet! Most importantly, it has a very accurate timetag, being
regularly synced with a NTP server. So we now knew the beginning of the
event was at 3:44:08 UT (21:44:08 CST). I determined that the earliest radar
returns of the fall were from Amarillo NEXRAD at 3:45:49.7, just 99 seconds
after the beginning of dark flight (~21:44:11 UT). This was how we knew
meteorites were on the ground for sure, since dust or even small pebbles
can't fall that far in less than 2 minutes.

Anyway, this is getting a bit long and I want to get these details out
there sooner rather than later in order to credit some of the important
players that made this all happen. Hopefully it gives you a sense of the
amount of detective work goes into chasing down these falls, and how
much of a team effort it is.

Cheers!

ago on the evening of 17 February 2016 is officially a fall: the second
successful radar-enabled recovery of 2016 (following Osceola, Florida)
as well as Texas' second Doppler-cued recovery (the first of course

Hi Adam, All,

This may be true but it is very rarely if ever enforced, rendering the laws

I agree with everything you stated with the exception of response 2 where
you state private citizens can profit from meteorite finds here in the
United States. It is against federal and most state laws to use meteorites
found on public land for commercial purposes meaning that the finder is not
allowed to sell anything they find. Private citizen are prohibited from
making a profit without a permit which will never be issued.

2) If private citizens were prohibited from profiting from the recovery of
meteorites,
would you expect a negative impact on the quantity of recovered material
from a
new fall? I think this is undeniable, and therefore it certainly follows
that the total
mass deposited with accredited institutions would suffer. And it's not just
the
quantity, it's the quality. A meteorite recovered within 24 hours of a fall
is obviously
more scientifically valuable than one recovered a month later, when
terrestrial
weathering has altered some rare minerals, and short-lived radioisotopes
have
decayed below the threshold of detectability.

Hi Ian,

Since you brought up the Creston fall, presumably as a comparison example
against
current Australian state policies, I feel some counter-commentary is
appropriate.

> Creston is a example of where things went a bit pair shaped in my mind for
> science.

In my opinion, Creston was really no stranger than Sutter's Mill, Novato,
Battle Mountain,
Mifflin or Ash Creek. Science has been well served by all of these falls.

> USA had a private network of cameras setup that captured the fireball, a
> private individual
> and some others extracted that meteorite, the first piece(s) was then on

> was sold for a ridiculous price. Not illegal or immoral..just not
> ideal

I think what you are getting at is that only a small fraction of each of
these falls made
it into the hands of researchers. There are a couple points to consider:

(1) How much material do researchers really need to extract the majority of
pertinent
scientific data from a fall? Sure, if you had infinite time you'd love to
have all of it since
the individual meteorites from a fall are not necessarily homogenous. (Case
in point:
Almahata Sitta). But balanced against this is the question of how much more
you're
going to learn by analyzing all of the stones from an L6 fall.

(2) If private citizens were prohibited from profiting from the recovery of
meteorites,
would you expect a negative impact on the quantity of recovered material
from a

(3) Successful meteorite recovery requires a significant skill set AND
considerable
expenditures of time and money. In the U.S., I expect that more than 95% of
the
annual resources made available through government grants to recover
meteorites
goes to ANSMET. I've spent thousands of unpaid hours on the analysis of
nearly
all U.S. falls that have occurred in the last 15 years, as well as a number
of falls
outside America, and have devoted a not insignificant amount of time and
money
traveling to many of these places to recover meteorites. On each of these
expeditions I tend to encounter the same couple dozen of dedicated
individuals --
names that would all be familiar to anyone on the Meteorite List. On
occasion I

2016-01-18 Thread Larry Atkins via Meteorite-list
Hi Adam,

What I said is true. Unenforced laws are meaningless. A warning or whatever.
really doesn't add up to anything of substance, and without actual charges or
at least a ticket, it's just words.

I'm guessing, only guessing, the incidents you mentioned happened during, or
just after the peak of the" Met Men" series, when the BLM was on a mission to
keep us from making all that 'easy money'. I'd bet those same officers watching
eBay have tired of the activity and moved on to bigger fish long ago. Not much
to get uptight about on eBay regarding American meteorites "poached" from state
or federal land. It wouldn't take long for them to figure out that monitoring
eBay is a nonstarter, not enough money to merit the effort. The crater is the
exception but that's a whole other topic.

I spend a lot of time in the field, thousands of hours, and I have hard core
meteorite hunting buddies pounding the ground for thousands of hours per year
without incident. Every single officer I've come into contact with was aware of
what I was doing and never once have I had an issue. Some day if we ever get
together we can share some stories.

As far as artifacts and fossils go you are correct, but only to a point. You
can surface collect in most areas as far as I know. I can pick up fossils all
day long, no one cares until I find 'Sue'. The same will hold true for
meteorites, no one is gonna care until I recover the first North American Lunar.

The heat has cooled off. Relax,, Smile and go find some rocks bro. : )

I wish what you said was true. Our entire group was hassled around the
Pahrump area in Nevada and twice in California. Eight of our team members
were threatened (warned) and I know others on the List who have been hassled
as well. Two agents based out Barstow went as far as saying they know what
is being sold on eBay. We were told that some public land is designated as
heritage or areas of areas of critical concern which are completely off
limits while metal detectors cannot be used in other areas. I cannot find
any source which lists these areas so an agent can determine this in field
so be careful. Just ask artifact and fossils hunters what happened with
their once-fine avocation including the fellow who found "Sue" the dinosaur.

Hi Sean,

Think of it like this. If you put the Earth in a giant blender, mix it all
up, then take a shovel full, the ratio of precious metals would be higher than
if you didn't blend it. In essence it would be like sampling a chondritic

That's the way I understand it. If I'm off someone correct me please.

Subject: [meteorite-list] Mining Asteroids

Hello Listers,
Over the years there's been a lot of talk about
mining asteroids for gold, diamonds, platinum and other valuable
metals. There are groups forming companies, looking for investors and
finding them. What I'm wondering is if all that treasure is out
there wouldn't we already have found it in the tens of thousands of
meteorite samples we know about within the meteorite community? I
realize we've found nano diamonds and nickel along with the iron group
material but is there any thing indicating that there's any reason to
justify the expense of an space mining operation? If I'm wrong about
what we've already found in meteorite samples please correct me. Any
thoughts?

[meteorite-list] AD- Bingol 160.4 gram Amazing Stone

2015-12-30 Thread Larry Atkins via Meteorite-list
Hello List,

I recently purchased a 160.4 gram, oriented Bingol from the finder. I would
like to offer it to the list members for purchase. Specimens this size are rare
and most have been scooped up by institutions and collectors. Interested
persons can contact me off list for pictures and the negotiable price.

Happy Holidays.

Don,

As kind as your intentions were, I just have to point out that you got it all
wrong! If you really want the best for Larry, you need to adjust the scenario
to where the meteorite actually DOES hit him. Obviously no serious injury, but
definitely enough to cause some bleeding ... and the need for a few stitches. I
mean, can you imagine how COOL it would be to go down in history as the first
confirmed person to have been cut by a falling meteorite!?? And stitches???
What unbelievable bragging rights when showing off THAT scar!!! Could it get
any better than that? You agree, don't you, Larry? ;-)

Best wishes to all,
Robert Woolard

Key Capital Announces Major Potential Meteorite Mining Opportunity Joint
Ventured
CNN Money
December 02, 2015: 08:30 AM ET

Key Capital Corporation (OTC PINK: KCPC) ("Key Capital" or "the Company")
advises that the Company has entered into a joint venture for the exploitation
of a highly promising and exciting Arizona resource property.

The orebody located on the property is well known as a magnetite resource
having been the subject of extensive historic exploration since the 1960s.
In recent years, through identification of extraordinary high-grade iridium
in samples, it became evident that a significant part of the orebody on
the property is of meteorite origin, and it was established that the orebody
presented major potential for precious metals and PGMs.

Iridium is usually found naturally only in small concentration and quantity
and the total annual world production of iridium, which sells for around
US$580 per ounce, is only 3 tons. Concentrations of iridium such as in
the analysis of ore samples from the property, including associated high-grade
osmium, is only found in meteorites in association with other high-grade
precious metals, and the ore in this case appears to be "Achondrite" in
origin.

Recognizing that an alternative assay approach needed to be used, an ore
sample was sent to an independent specialist laboratory and the resultant
reported precious and rare metals content proved to be extraordinary:

In general, the natural composition of a meteorite is relatively consistent
and in most cases very rich in mineralization. The opportunity to capitalize
on the potential of this identified meteorite ore is unique and exciting,
and, subject to expectations being met during the course of bulk sampling
commencing in Q1, 2016, it is planned to then commence mining operations
by 2016 year-end.

The project does not have a proven resource or reserve and is not compliant
with SEC or NI 43-101 reporting standards. However, when considering the
relatively high content of precious and rare metals known to be found
in certain meteorites when compared to traditional mines, the Company
has determined that the most effective and efficient method of development
is to prove up grade, recoverability and viability through bulk sampling,
and then to move directly to scaled-up commercial production.

Christopher Nichols, President/CEO of Key Capital stated: "The idea that
asteroids can be mined for their high-grade valuable resources has been
around for years and in recent times has attracted many high-profile investors
including Larry Page, Eric Schmidt, James Cameron, Ross Perot, and Richard
Branson. The opportunity to mine a meteorite presents unique potential,
but without the high-risk, expected costs and uncertainty of establishing
mining operations in a space environment."

ABOUT KEY CAPITAL: Key Capital is a financial services company providing
alternative finance solutions to resource and energy projects. The Company
is growing a Mineral and Energy Bank of accretive interests in diverse
commodity streams through the provision of structured and equity financing
for mid-market resource production in mines containing gold, silver, or
base metals, or in energy products. The Company is a Georgia corporation
headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Hello List,

I'm trying to find out about an issue of Smithsonian Magazine that featured Bob

early to mid 1990's. I have asked Bob himself but he doesn't remember. The
reason I'm interested in this issue in particular is because it was a major
turning point for me when I read the article. It was the moment I realized that
I could find a meteorite, something that had never entered my mind prior to

Hi all,

I am proud to introduce the worlds newest recovered meteorite fall
called, Creston.

See it here
http://www.mrmeteorite.com/newcaliforniafall.htm

or keep reading,

This meteorite fell October 23, 2015 near wine country just east of
Paso Robles California in an area called Creston.

To date less than 800 grams (4 small stones) of this fall have been
recovered and nearly all is already locked up in collections.

In fact, as far as we know only the 11 slices below (and 1 end cut)
which were cut from the 102 gram stone pictured at the top of the page
will ever be available.

This meteorite, likely an L6 has shock veins crossing though each
slice. According to the classifying scientist it is a commonly seen
feature in other samples he studied from this fall.

Please call or email if you're interested in a slice!

Robert Ward is in the field in California, and asked me to pass this along
to the list! He recovered the first stone from the fall, and is continuing
his expedition.

Make sure to click the link below to see the story, along with photos from
Robert on his Website, robertwardmeteorites.com...

--

On October 23, 2015, at 0547 UTC, a large fireball lit up the rolling hills
of wine country east of Paso Robles.

The bolide stunned onlookers with a multitude of colors as it broke up into
many pieces. The magnitude of the fall was so great that the spectacle was
even observed several states away. Dozens of witnesses close to the ground
path heard sonic booms shortly after the fireball terminated.

By the next day, the American Meteor Society had received over 120 reports.
At first I was confused by what I saw in the data in the various AMS
reports. As I sorted through a number of eye witness descriptions, it was
soon clear that there were two events near to one another, both in distance
and in time. I began working through the reports from the larger event
individually, narrowing down the area to San Luis Obispo County. And
focusing on eye witness reports in this area, I found one report in
particular that caught my attention. The eye witness reported what sounded
"like bombs falling," and that the meteor had passed directly overhead.

I contacted Marc Fries with the location and suggested the fall was probably
within a few miles of the eye witnesses location. Within minutes, Marc found
radar returns in the area that corresponded with the time of the event.

On October 27th, my wife Anne Marie and I arrived in the area under the
returns Marc Fries had discovered. Within twenty minutes, we found a stone
that had hit a metal fence post and shattered, showering the road embankment
with fragments. We recovered 395.7 grams of material from the site and
subsequently reassembled the majority of the stone.

More here, with pictures:
http://robertwardmeteorites.com/creston-california/

We'll be posting more pictures, information and details on the expedition as
the hunt progresses.

Re: [meteorite-list] Local to Las Vegas expert needed to rewiew a find.

2015-09-15 Thread Larry Atkins via Meteorite-list
Hi John, List,

You may be right about not having a problem getting a US
chondrite classified, however, if it was found in the Mohave desert it is likely
to get a number instead of a name. Unfortunately, Nom Com will likely lump it in
with the nearest DCA,

I'm wondering how much longer it will be before the
entire Mohave desert is one big DCA like NWA?

I'd love to see a photo also, but I live in Philadelphia so I won't be
seeingthis in person. :-) That aside,I'm assuming from your post that this is
a"chondrite" native to the USA, and not just another NWA. I have about 25
NWA'sundergoing classification now, and I have more I'd like to get classified
but itis indeed hard to find a lab that will work on NWAs that look like
obvious OCs. I think that is a mistake on their part, because there are so many
uniquethings to be found in meteorites.  In my opinion, many labs would
thinkdifferently about a "native" US chondrite, than an NWA chondrite.  I do
notthink you will have trouble finding a home for it if it is a USA find.

I had a lunar meteorite recently classified by Carl Agee. It's NWA 10140. It is

[meteorite-list] Life Path was High End Collectors

2015-06-03 Thread Larry Atkins via Meteorite-list

Greg finished with,

While working with meteorites you never know where your
life path will lead you.

While 'working with meteorites' my life path has
lead me to incredible people and life experiences. In fact, It lead me to more
than one hunt with you Greg!

What you said could not be more true. Meteorites
are special and the endeavor is life long for some. My meteorite career and
experiences are minor compared to many of you people, but non the less fantastic
for me. Meteorites really are the coolest thing on Earth as far as I'm
concerned and I can't wait to get back to the desert in the Autumn for the
next big adventure.

Happy
Hunting!

Hi Marissa, Michael, List,

Call me a softy but that was a touching story! Marissa, I'm so glad that you
have had this opportunity to experience a dry lake bed, to find a meteorite and
share in the unique thing that is meteorite hunting. Your story reminded me of
how fortunate I am and how tough it can be for others. You are a brave and
courageous person with more guts than most! Shoot, I have perfectly able bodied
friends that won't hardly leave the couch, let alone go to the desert and hunt
for the rarest stuff on earth! Good on you!

Michael, what can I say, you rock! I wish I could have been there.

Hello, list.Marissa has posted her trip report on Club

it below, as well.Happy hunting,Michael in so.Cal.Well it's the moment that
you've all been waiting for, myentirereport on my greatest adventure ever, my
meteoritehuntingexperience!! Yes it's very long because there was a ton
toreport!I hope that you all enjoy it because this was all your doing :)Mikeand
Rogan will probably report their experiences as well. They better!:)this was a
group effort, the trip wouldn't have gone so perfectwithout eitherof them.
Enjoy!!!Day 1We boarded our plane at about 6:40am and we werefortunate to get
toboard first, I got the window seat that I wanted and Icould look
outperfectly. We took off at 7:20am and it was a great amazingride!Cleveland
looked beautiful even though it was mostly cloudy, thesunpeaking through only a
little and the lake was the same color as thesky,I couldn't tell where the
water ended and the sky began. A fewminutes later wewere above the clouds. They
were all wavy and itlooked like one big comforterthat you could just land on
and it'dcatch you. An hour or so later we finallypassed the front and all
theclouds beneath us and I got my first view of theland from 37,000 feetup, it
was stunning! The trees formed around rivers, itlooked likeroots under trees or
the structure of the universe branching outawayfrom the rivers. The landscape
really did look like a topographicmapwith brown, tan, and green squares and
rectangules everywhere. Thehouseslooked like sparkles on the earth. Hours later
we were finallyseeing a changein the land from farm land to desert. Some spots
weretan and some were red. Weflew over a canyon but I'm not sure if itwas the
grand canyon but nonethelessit was beautiful, I could see theriver inside the
canyon. A little later weflew over the tallestmountains that I've ever seen,
they we completely snowcovered. Anhour or so later we started making our
decent, once we passedthecloud cover Vegas was in site and it was huge!!! I
could seethestratosphere standing tall and all the hotels and casinos.
Thepilotlanded the plane so beautifully and smooth. We made our way
throughtheridiculously huge airport trying to find the baggage claim, we hadto
get on anAmtrak to get to the baggage claim area. Once we gotthere I saw a
young manwaving at me, I had no idea who this was andthought for a moment that
someoneI knew from Ohio came too and Icouldn't remember them. He walked over
and tomy surprise it wasRogan! I was in shock, I had no idea he would come.
Ihad asked along time ago if he could be there but he couldn't give me
astraightanswer and lead me to believe that he couldn't go. I was so
happythathe actually came! From there we got our rental van and we
drovethroughlas Vegas Blvd to check out the Vegas scene. I'll only be hereonce
so I had tosee the city. We stopped at New York New York for anamazing
breakfast followedby the hard rock cafe and some gambling. Icouldn't believe
that they actuallyhad Vegas showgirls out on thesidewalks. After that we headed
to pahrump whereour hotel was tochange for dinner, we had reservations to the
Top of TheWorldrestaurant in the stratosphere hotel and casino. During the
drivebackthrough the mountains we saw a rain cloud and a
beautifulrainbowembedded inside. The view was stunning, the restaurant was
amazingandthe food was incredible! There were people bungee jumping off the
sideofthe building. Our waiter was so good that when I asked for
plasticsilverwareand he said that they had none he actually went to
anotherplace in thebuilding to get me some. The service was amazing. Wefinished
a bottle of roseabaringer wine it was very good. Once it gotcompletely dark the
lights in thedistance were shimmering like starsin the sky. We sat enjoying the
viewwatching the moon and Venus setin the distance.Day 2Michael Mulgrew
wascoming in today for our first hunt in StewartValley and to show off

Hi Anne, List,

I for one am sad to see the decline in list activity. I've been on here for
many years and I miss the multiple, daily posts that we used to get. It was
such an active, fun, educational, and entertaining place! (sometimes a little
mean, too)

I joined facebook some time ago so as not to feel as out dated as I actually
am : ) and to keep up with the times. Unfortunately for me, I don't seem to get
the joy from facebook that the met list of old gave me. I have barely said 2
words on facebook. I really can't put my finger on what the disconnect is, but
it's there. Perhaps it's the snippets of info instead of more details, maybe
it's the hundreds of people that want to be my 'friend' that I've never heard
of. Maybe I feel like it's going to be to much of a commitment once I dive in?
On top of all this is the privacy issue, real or imagined.

The future is knocking and I know it's only a matter of time before I have to
give in to change so as not to go socially extinct!

[meteorite-list] Classification Correction- Gold Basin

2015-03-06 Thread Larry Atkins via Meteorite-list
Hello List,

For those that were paying attention to the Gold Basin thread, I made a mistake
and sent the classification details for the wrong meteorite! I had several
stones classified at the same time and I copied the write up for a different
L6, not GB. Here's the correct info.

UCLA (Rubin, Breen)

specimen 1938, received October 2, 2014, 1 piece, 66.2 g
L6 S5W2
olivine: Fa 23.3±0.2 (n=11); low-Ca pyroxene: Fs20.2±0.7 Wo1.0±0.2 (n=15)

The rock exhibits strong mosacisim and contains maskelynite. Polycrystalline
troilite is present. Some metal grains contain small, irregularly shaped
troilite grains within them.

Thanks to everyone for the congrat's and kind words.

Sincerely,
Larry Atkins

[meteorite-list] Gold Basin

2015-02-26 Thread Larry Atkins via Meteorite-list

Hello List,

As you may have heard, there has been a major development concerning
the Gold Basin strewn field. Of course, it's possible this is not GB
but the evidence looks very promising.

Three years ago Joe Franske ventured to the north side of Lake Meade in
search of the big end of Gold Basin. According to Joe, it took him 6
tries to get to the right location, but once he did, it took him only 3
hours to find a meteorite. This is a monumental feat to say the least.
He brought me in on the project last March and I take no credit for
this discovery. Sure, we all had an idea that the strewn field crossed
the lake, we all drew lines, but only one guy had the steel to go get
it done. Hats off to Joe.

Joe and I have decided we are pretty much done out there for now. We
documented well over 100 pounds, most of which was found on the
south side of Jumbo Peak. Last week I extended the field another 5.75
miles with 2 finds on the north side of Jumbo, including
a 34 pound stone that was broken into many pieces. We decided to give
you guys

some details regarding the find
locations, hence this message, but in return we would like to know
about
any finds you make so that we may continue documenting the strewn
field. Jim Kreigh, John Blennert and Twink Monrad did a fantastic job
documenting in the past and we would like to do the same. I know there
are some hunters out there that will not share and so be it, but most
of us are
good people and I would expect some cooperation for the good of the
larger picture. Please send your reports to me so that I can share them
with the scientist involved with our work.

Joe found the first stone on the south side of Jumbo Peak and that is
where the majority of the finds were made. The area is only about a
mile wide and I highly doubt that defines the outer limits of the
field, however, to go farther east or west is difficult due to terrain.
Go onto Google earth and you will see the valley just south of the
peak, and north of the park boundary,

this is where you start.

On the north side of Jumbo Peak you will find most of the area too soft
for meteorite recovery. Decomposing granite has likely buried the
stones too deep for detection. In my mind it's a small miracle that I
found the 2 stones on that side. To put the difficulty into
perspective, we spent 36 man days to locate the 2 stones and out of
four hunters I was the only one to score. That place will hand your
butt
to you on a platter, as they say.

As a side note;
If you decide to give this place a try there are some things to
consider. To get to the south side of Jumbo you will need a 4 wheel
drive and it takes about 3.5 - 4 hours once you leave Mesquite. There
is no phone service and the road out wants to eat your truck! If you
go, plan to stay for several days at least, it's a lot of work and
expense just for a day or two.

If you have any specific questions feel free to email me.

Good luck and fair sailing to all who go!

Here's the low down on the science so far.

I submitted samples from my 16+ lb. stone (found March, 2014) to UCLA
this past summer.
It did come back L6 as can be seen below. Dr. Kring wants to do
more work including cosmogenics and such, on several different samples
to help come to a conclusion as to whether or not it is indeed Gold
Basin .

When asked how I know it's GB I say that the classification is
consistent, they look the same in hand, on the exterior and the
interior, and they are in line with the logical progression of the
known field. Sure, it could be something different, but simply put,
the easiest, most obvious and logical answer is usually the right
answer. I'd be very, very surprised if it was something else.

UCLA (Rubin, Breen)

received August 18, 2014, 2 pieces, 23.7 g
L6 S4 W1
olivine: Fa 23.9±0.2 (n=15); low-Ca pyroxene: Fs20.3±0.3 Wo1.6±0.2
(n=12)

plagioclase grains are typically 60-100 µm in size. The rock exhibits
weak mosacisim but does not contain maskelynite.

Larry Atkins

Hello Bernd, All,

Conclusions. The radionuclide results in fifteen
new L chondrite specimens from the Gold Basin area
indicate that all samples are part of the same shower,
which should be classified as an L4-6 chondrite breccia.

This paragraph refers to the HW stones Bob V. submitted.

[meteorite-list] Global Meteorite Price Report 2015

2014-12-26 Thread Larry Atkins via Meteorite-list

Hello List,

It's been quite a while since I've posted to the list but I thought I'd
comment on Kevin Kichinka's price report. I must admit that I've not
purchased it in the past, though it sounded interesting. Maybe I was
afraid to see how much I overpaid for some of my specimens, or how
little I sold one of my finds for, etc.. As luck would have it, somehow
I managed to win his contest on the Chely event and part of my prize
was a free copy of the report. After reading all 33 pages I must say I
found it very informative, comprehensive, useful, interesting, and
entertaining! I have found it to be a 'must have' for the future and I
encourage those of you on the fence to go ahead and make the purchase,
you will not be disappointed.

Kevin is an excellent writer, as demonstrated in his articles written
for Meteorite and his book The Art of Collecting Meteorites which
I bought a year or so ago, another must have for collectors.

Thanks for the contributions Kevin!

Best Wishes to All during this Holiday Season,
