Subject: Stolen Meteorite, NYSP SP Horseheads Case.

Mr. Casper,

This is the in best information and discription, I can provide regarding
the stolen meteorite.

Meteorite taken from private residence on Jay Rumsey Rd., T/Van Etten,
between last week of July 2007, and first week of August 2007.

Possible suspect, may be a son who lives in Long Island.

Meteorite was in back yard of residence, and was used as a bird bath.

Meteorite was approximately 20inches long, by 10 inches wide, by 12 inches
high. Had curved indentation (use as bird bath), which was about 0.5 to
1inch deep on one side, and sloped to about 1- 1.5 inches deep. Meteorite
had an oval shape, and was reddish brown in color. Compl. states that
Cornell University verified it was a meteorite back in the early 1970's.

Thanks for your help,
TPR A Y Heppner

Didn't catch the LA 002 thread until late. Tonight
was spent in preparation for our presentation at UCLA
for tomorrow morning's Session of the 65th Annual
Meeting of the Meteoritical Society. Nick Gessler,
(along with Rob Matson and myself) will be presenting
what signifies as being our combined, past 3 years of
meteorite recovery efforts in the Southwestern U.S.

So, obviously I have no intention of entering into a
lengthy discussion about LA 002, right now.

But in regards to Michael Bloods post about the
preservation of LA 002 - YES, I did publicly express
my desires to not have LA 002 cut (for ESTHETIC
reasons), but this is an evolving issue, and for
anyone who progresses within their study of
meteorites, there comes a time when a corner is
turned and comes the realization that meteorites
exist in order to be cut! That meteorites made the
long journey to our planet for the explicit purpose
that they be cut, not only so that they can be
analyzed, but in order that their interior beauty can
 be exposed.

YES, I know. I have taken some List members to task
for the their devout attitudes towards never
cutting their favorite meteorite never for ANY
reason, especially when that attitude is taken to the
point of alienating researchers and risking our
tenuous relationship with them. Having taken that
position, how then can I take the attitude that LA 002
should never again undergo the blade?

No longer do I presume to withhold from researchers
and the science of meteoritics THAT which would
advance our understanding of Mars, our own planet, and
the Solar System. Certainly, not for the reason that
it's too beautiful. Certainly, not in this age of
advancing technology, now that we can core and extract
samples sufficiently large enough for analysis, yet
small enough that a meteorites form is not
compromised. (Besides, I've seen the museum's exact
replica of LA 002. It is a PERFECT replica! Now,
THAT is a real work of art that needs preservation.
In addition, I have the mold from which more replicas
 can be made.;-)

But if you don't agree with my philosophy about
cutting meteorites, and if you are such a
preservationist that you feel obliged to rescue LA 002
(for sure, the Museum had their chance but they passed
in favor of much needed renovations), then feel free
to make me an offer. There is no barrier or
restriction that would prevent you from doing just
that - make me an offer for LA 002. I will
respectfully consider all legitimate offers. But
before I accept any offer, I will make good on my
promise to Michael Casper, that in consideration of
his keeping of his word and of the faithful execution
of all the many aspects involved in the sale of LA
001, that I would extend to him the opportunity to,
either, make the last (or final) offer in the sale
of LA 002, or, to pass on that opportunity.

No big, complex mystery - just a simple explanation.

 Bob V.

 Expert warns of asteroid hit

London - A massive asteroid could hit Earth in just 17 years' time,
destroying life as we know it, a British space expert said on Wednesday.
The asteroid - the most threatening object ever detected in space - is 2km
wide and apparently on a direct collision course with Earth.
Objects of this size only hit the Earth every one or two million years,
said Dr Benny Peiser, an asteroid expert at Liverpool John Moore's
 University in northern England.
In the worst case scenario, a disaster of this size would be global in
its
extent, would create a meltdown of our economic and social life, and would
reduce us to dark age conditions, he said.
But Peiser and other space experts say they are pretty confident this
nightmare scenario will not come about.
This thing is the highest threat that has been catalogued, but the scale
in

terms of the threat keeps changing, said Peter Bond, spokesperson for the
 Royal Astronomical Society.
If it did hit the Earth it would cause a continental-size explosion...
but
it is a fairly remote possibility.
The asteroid - named 2002 NT7 - was first detected earlier this month by
the

United States Linear sky survey programme.
Since then, Peiser said scientists at the US National Aeronautics and
Space
Administration's (Nasa) near-Earth objects team and at Pisa University in
Italy have carried out orbit calculations to work out the probability and
potential date of impact to define the risk it poses.
Their calculations show it could hit the earth on February 1, 2019.
The impact probability is below one in a million, but because the first
impact date is so early - only 17 years from now - and the object is very
large, it's been rated on the impact risk Palermo Scale as a positive,
Peiser said. It is the first object which has ever hit a positive
rating.
Scientists warn, however, that the risk rating has not been reviewed by
the
International Astronomical Union, which is the main international body
 responsible for announcing such risks.
Peiser said 2002 NT7 would continue to be monitored by space experts
across
the world, and that over time, these observations would probably erase the
 threat posed by it.
In all likelihood, in a couple of months additional observations will
eliminate this object from the list of potential impacts, he said. I am
very confident that additional observations over time will... show that it
is actually not on a collision course with Earth.
But he warned that the world should take this as wake-up call and set
about
preparing for the reality of an asteroid hit in the future.
Sooner or later - and no one can really tell us which it will be - we
will
find an object that is on a collision course. That is as certain as Amen
in
church. And eventually we will have to deflect an object from its
collision
 course, he said.
At the moment, he added, scientists fear it could take at least 30 years
for

the world to be able to devise and set up a mission to deal with such a
threat - a timescale which would be woefully inadequate if the 2019 strike
 were to happen.

differentthings regarding the radioactivity of
Trinitite:1) That its radioactive level is so low as to be
completely irrelivant that you could tape it to the inside
of your jock strap and wearit daily with ZERO impact on yourself

Others have said it has a "lower" level of radioactivity than
thefurnature in your home (I don't see how this is possible -
but I lackinsight on several things) I do know some
collectors keep their Trinitite wrapped intin foil "just in
case" - but then, some people wear tin foil hats toprotect them
from the radio beams Best wishes,

It seems that a few people on the list dislike other list
members.
Would it be too much to ask that such disagreements be conducted in
private Emails, that is off-list?
The current feud, while over meteorites, has little to do with the rest
of the list members. Quite frankly, it makes others uneasy.
In the past I have had a disagreement with one other list member.

I wrote to him off-list, and he replied off-list.
It was settled quickly and politely.

End of story.

who may or may not have purchased them.

It's the same as if I buy a new car and the dealer doesn't pay the
manufacturer for it, that's not my problem!

 Hi list !

I just wanted to write a quick recommendation for Geoff Cintron, Island
 Meteorite (http://www.islandmeteorite.com).
I purchased a piece of the extraordinary NWA 176 meteorite from Mr.
Cintron.
Unfortunately it was lost on it's way to me. There was no chance to track
 the package.
I waited a a whole while (2 months) before I decided to inform Mr.
Cintron
 about this circumstance,
because sometimes packages to Austria take longer time, because they are
 often missent to Australia.

He offered me a replacement piece for free. He picked up the cost of the
 lost specimen.
I only had to cover the new shipping costs. In the meantime I got my
replacement piece. It's a wonderful piece.

Thanks once again Geoff, for your greatness and generosity.

May the next meteorite fall have it's strewnfield in the middle of your
 backyard,
with highest recommendations for you and best regards,

 Christian

   Hello list,
Yesterday I sent an E-mail about an image I put on my site. I just got
 an
E-mail from Alan Hildebrand saying that it is copyrighted. I had
 downloaded
the full image onto my computer to use in a screensaver. The image was
 too
big so I edited it in paint to only show the fireball. Later, I
 converted
the bmp to a jpg and put it on my website not realizing that it was
copyrighted. I have removed the image from my site and sent an
appology
 to
Alan Hildebrand. The original image was taken by Brad Gledhill and can
 be
viewed IN FULL on the University of Calgary website at:
   http://www.fp.ucalgary.ca/unicomm/news/Nov_01/meteor_1.htm

If you have downloaded the image that was on my site onto your

please delete it as it does not give the proper credit to Mr.
Gledhill.

Gee, I have really made an ass of myself.

out? I have wore my Rocks from Space paperback book
nearly out and wish now I had bought one of the
 autographed hardbacked versions.
This time I plan on getting a real keeper of the
 new release if I can.
Thanks You,

Subject: [meteorite-list] Tucson Sale

I lost some emails so if anybody sent me an email to buy stuff over the
last
couple days please email me again.
I set up a bit late in tucson and missed the first two days but I have
managed to sell 450 kilos of meteorites in tucson so I guess that I have
had
a good show. I had 414 kilos of meteorites shipped directly from morocco
that I bought when I was there last month. People searched over them at 20
cents to $1.25 a gram depending on crust. 3 people showed me likely LL3s
that they found in my pile. Two peoplw is claiming that they found a
ureilite but I havent seen the stones. Another dealer from france pulled
out
a over half kilo CO3 from my pile to that he paid 50 cents a gram for. I
have had a lot of dealers buying stuff from my pile of meteorites this
show.
I have been pretty busy all show. One guy on a trilobite mailing list
complained that he checked my room and it was always to busy to look
through
it (Yahoo newsgroup Trilobites). I usually get the nomads coming to me
in
erfoud right after a sahara search trip and my stuff is typically not as
picked over as much as most of the moroccan stuff that you see on the
market
at source in morocco. I go through a couple hundred kilos of meteorites a
month so I dont have time to pick them over myself either.
Tomorrow or thursday I plan to pack up and go sipping margaratas in mexico
with Mark (Thebigcollector) for a week before going back to canada.
I would prefer to sell things now than to pack them and ship back to
canada
so here are some deals for those who couldent make it to tucson. I will
pay
postage within the USA for over $100 orders. Paypal preferred and I will
 ship from tucson.
Loose NWA material $200 a kilo
Gold Basin 50 cents a gram
 NWA267 H4. Small weathered fragments $150 a kilo
NWA869 L4. Possibly the largest and one of the nicest falls to come out of
the sahara $250 a kilo (One time offer - this is $300 a kilo normally)
 More CR2 $23.50 a gram
Meteorites with over 50% nice crust $750 a kilo.
Opal from Peru $85 a kilo
Chancay Artifact (Peru 900 - 1400AD) whorles with pin still attached $30
82 gram etched cape york $195 (One only available)
 Green river fish $8 each
Chinese fish (Jainchanichthys) 3 sizes $7, $12 and $15 sizes.
I might be leaving tomorrow so let me know if any of this interests you as
 soon as you can
 Cheers
 DEAN

[meteorite-list] Casper says, THIS MAY BE WAY COOL!!

2002-02-11 Thread Michael Casper

A cool way
to avoid sending a virus to others from your address book.As you may
know, if/when a worm virus gets into your computer it heads straight for
your address book and sends itself to everyone in there, thus infecting
all your friends and associates. This trick won't keep the virus from
getting into your computer, but it will stop it from using your address book
to spread further, and it will alert you to the fact that the worm has
gotten into your system. Here's what you do:First, open your
address book and click on "new contact" just as you would do if you were
adding a new friend to your list of email addresses. In the window
where you would type your friend's first name, type in !000 (that's an
exclamation mark followed by three zeros). In the window below where
it prompts you to enterthe new email address, type in WormAlert. Then
complete everything by clicking OK, enter, add, etc. Now,
here's what you've done and why it works: the "name" !000 will be placed at
the top of your address book as entry #1. This will be where the worm
will start in an effort to send itself to all your friends. But when it
tries to send itself to !000, it will be undeliverable because of the phony
email address you entered (WormAlert). If the first attempt fails (which
it will because of the phony address), the worm goes no further and your
friends will not be infected. Here's the second great advantage of
this method: if an email cannot be delivered, you will be notified of
this in your In Box almost immediately. Hence, if you ever get an email
telling you that an email addressed to WormAlert could not be delivered,
you know right away that you have the worm virusin your system. You can
then take steps to get rid of it!Pretty slick huh?If everybody
you know does this then you needn't ever worry about opening mail from
friends. Pass this on to all your
friends.

This office aquired:

1. 489 grams of Mt.Vernon (pallasite) from
ASU 14 Feb 2000 in trade. It was sold for $50.00 per gram in
May 2000.

2. 132.6 grams of North Chile in the aqusition of a collection and sold it
for $4.90 cents per gram on 14 Novenber 1998.

These prices are in our records and I hereby attest to them.

 Hello all-
can anyone out ther give me the per gram cost of either North Chile
 (hexahedrite) or Mt Vernon (pallasite).
I am assessing a meteorite collection for an insurance claim and need to
ascertain the worth of the pieces. North Chile is about 2kg and Mt
Vernon is ~600g. Both are ruined. Thanks in advance.

Rhett,
I'm doing this for your own good. You need to quit embarrassing
yourself on the meteorite list. There are many lurkers on the list who have
been around meteorites a very very long time. Most of the people you see
posting to the list, like yourself, haven't been around all that long, and
really don't know squat about the meteorite market. One of the reasons you
can afford meteorites is Michael Casper. One of the reasons certain
meteorites are now available is Michael Casper. If you really ever want to
see rock bottom killer deals on meteorites, the reason will be Michael
Casper. So, to see a novice like yourself refer to Casper as Mikey, all
you are doing is embarrassing yourself and showing your naiveté.

Hello everyone, just a quick Tucson show report.
The show is in full swing and very busy.
Lots of nice stuff here but meteorites are
scarcer than ever before! There are more dealers but not so many meteorites to
choose from. Allende and Gibeon are virtually non-existant for a change.
Surprisingly there is also not so many NWA's here either. Marvin Kilgore has
many nice rare meteorites, Pitt also has alot of beautiful things. Blaine Reed
has his usual nice assortment of all kinds of stuff.
We are having a blast, snow is gone, warm days
  and cool nights are back.
I am now also sold out of the hardback
autographed Rocks from Space books, so Casper can now get some action on
  ebay.
I also have many items ending tonight, most
  started at one penny!
  Check them out.

Who are these guys anyway? What the heck did they ever do for the
meteorite community? At the risk of tooting my own whistle, I have sold,
traded and distributed over $6,000,000.00 in meteorites which encompasses
over 400 individual falls and finds EXCLUDING NWA/Sahara. Not to mention
several hundred thousand in advertising that just might of had a possitive
effect
on meteorites/meteoritics and not to mention the distribution of more copies
of
the book Rocks from Space than any one person and not to mention the
making
available to the research community whatever specimens I had first (Every
major university and
researsh facility worldwide and donations to the same for over $100,000.00.
So the two individuals that want to exclude, delete and ban me from

Hello Rick and All List members

I sent this to Rick First, He all ready replied
I believe Rick's post violates listing policies number #7
Make sure you can back up statements with -facts and references-
Any references to Creationism or Creation Science, which is a bastard of
science, Bustard, science without any proof as a father
It is based on only one religion and has only blind faith as it's proof,
It in no way belongs on list.
All accredited schools in the US refer creationism as a religious belief
 only and
is not taught as a true science subject, This is as it should be.

This list is based on meteorites and should not allow religious horn
blowing without any true real facts,
Let keep the facts and statements based on accepted science and confirmed
scientific theories, and not made up viewpoints without facts or common
 sense.
Sorry to speak out so directly, I had to say something, I fear this
list will be damned for keeping it as a subject for more posts

I am confused. Is this a comment that you are making about casper or
a
comment that you are quoting from a nomad about how he feels about
 you?
  You
are even using the same word in your email. When amouri went to the
  police
when you were recently were in morocco his comment was He's
screwing
  me.
  I
guess that you talked your way out of it with the police because you
  never
actually broke any law. Just a slimy businessmen. What more proof do
 you
want? I gave specific names. I am not making idle vague comments
here
  that
somebody cannot independently verify. And if somebody wants to go
over
 I
  can
give him names of police officers in morocco who spoke to you
although
 I
wont post that publicly. But I am sure that anybody could easily get
  that
information from Amouri. And your only response was He drinks a
lot.
  From
your postings it would appear that all of your competation drinks a
  lot.
Is that the best that you can come up with? Anybody who dont roll
over
  for
the cry baby Drinks a lot.
As far as your illegal meteorite exports go why dont you post us all
  copies
of your export permits? You know that you dont have them.
I would also like to respond to your casper posting accusing him of
 not
being reflective of the meteorite community. What about you? Are you
reflective? True Casper might get enjoyment out of harrassing you
more
  than
other dealers sometimes but he would never sell illegally exported
meteorites. Most dealers would avoid known illegal meteorites. You
are
  not
reflective

You received an endpiece, not a nosecone. NWA482 is
the

If you paid

by far the most beautifulk Lunar out there, the only ones who seem to

God help us all, Casper, ask anyone, NWA 482 is
by far the most beautifulk Lunar out there, the only ones who seem to
dissagree with that are the dealers (and then only you and one other) who did
not get any. IU had not the slightest problem in selling over $250,000 worth

Well, I see that you got it in for me. It's a funny thing. We know that
you don't have a flippin dime to part with. Now that's not a bad thing.
However when you must attack me because I am succesful and you are not makes
no sense to me. It is a fact of life the I sold 90% of mt inventory at the
TOP of the market. Within a month of my final sale the meteorite market
FELL. Dop you really think that I don't know what's going on??? ALL the
suppliers all over the world call me first. Then and only then do they sell
to the rest of the Farmers,Brunos,Pittts and the like. Now it's a fact that
I made more money than every meteorite dealer combined except for 1 and only
one... and he made more than me and the rest of you clowns. I very happy
being #2.

Typical Casper here. You catch him with his own words and he starts to
bable like my almost two year old son does when you catch him being bad.
How anyone can take this man seriously is beyond me and for his own sake I
hope he's not as much of a blithering fool in the coin collecting world as
he is in the meteorite collecting world. Could that be the real reason
you
left the meteorite business? Why do you continue to post here Mikey? Its
pretty clear just about everyone here things you're a moron. I'm sure
you'll just rationalize this somehow by talking about how much money you
have but why do you continue to give us even more proof that you're a
moron?
A lying moron on top of it. Back when you were blasting Farmer for his
Bilanga you said that you have some small pieces for about half of what he
had it for. I emailed you wanting to buy some of this great deal that you
were bragging about. I got an email back in an hour or so saying you
didn't
have any. Now you're saying you've got all this NWA482. Come on Mikey,
we
know where your money is so why don't you put your meteorites where your
mouth is and off some of this so all of us can get some of this great
meteorite at these oh so wonderful prices you're talking about?

A clear cloudless day-time sky is blue because
molecules in the air scatter blue light from the sun more than they scatter red
light. When we look towards the sun at sunset we see red and orange colours
because the blue light has been scattered out and away from the line of sight.

 For IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE
 by I. M. Good
 Ithaca, NY
 23 Jan 2002

Meteorite Dealer goes to the races

Meteorite dealer and legend (in his own mind) Michael Casper
will be attennding The 2002 Tucson Rock, Gem and Mineral Show in
Spirit. It appears that there is an over-abundance of new material,
another 100 - 200 new dealers (over last years 100 -200 newbies) and
a decline in collectors. Prices have fallen in meteorite material so
drastically that they make the fall in tech stocks seem mild. Michael's
newest endeavor is Turtle Racing! He is now a breeder of a champion
bloodline of Evil Bluebelly Terror Turtles the fastest turtle the world
 has
 ever known! Good luck Mike!

Rhett, Because why?!!!

OK! I'll tell you why! First I'll have to apologize to Michael Cottingham
because he introduced me to eating Murchison several years ago and
I promised I wouldn't tell. Sorry Mike. I feed my turtles a diet of .1%
Murchison Meteorite every day and a double dose on Friday. They run,
jump and play lots more than your average turtle! They follow instructions
better
and I found them to run at least 3.7 times faster than your average turtle!
They've been winning race after race! Now do you see the pertinence
Rhett??

NEWS RELEASE SENT OUT TO MAJOR CANADIAN NEWSPAPERS
 UNKNOWN TO GENERAL PUBLIC

IMS International Meteorite Society Chippewa Lake
 Ohio-

Famous meteorite hunter Harvey Nininger during the
summer of 1931 wrote a meteorite news story for the
Canadian Saskatoon Star. He stated farmers could have
easily hauled meteorites to their rock piles. He
explained how to recognize meteorites, stressed the
importance of recovery, and how he was offering a cash
reward. Later a farmer by the name of Ward contacted
Mr. Nininger and sent him about 200 pounds of
meteorites in return receiving a check. In the 1931
correspondence with Mr. Ward he told Mr. Nininger of
the big one that got away. Before he learned the
true value of the dark rocks he had thrown away the
largest one he ever found. We were filling up a well
about seventy or eighty feet deep he related. I was
hauling rocks to fill it up. And this particular rock
was so heavy we used a team to pull it up onto the
stone-boat, and then when I got to the well it was all
I could do to dump it. I tore my hands rolling it into
the well. Later Nininger used a magnetometer in 1950
to find the old well and recover the meteorite. He was
meant by failure due to the technology at the time and
granite with magnetite. I was alerted to this
meteorite after reading Find A falling Star by Harvey
Nininger. Later IMS contacted the village of
Springwater and had them do a tax search for a Mr.
Ward. The current property owners where located and
the amount of $100,000 was offered upon recovery which
is pending further cash offers are in the works. IMS
contacted Martin Beech at Campion College University
of Regina (306) 359-1216. To be a part of the recovery
of this Springwater Meteorite. One dealer sells
Springwater at $50.00 dollars a gram

 http://fernlea.tripod.com/sale4.html

 Listed under Springwater

IMS has access to a Ground Penetration Rader which
cost $50,000.00 IMS will be able to locate the well
rather easily in a plowed over field then proceed with
recovery. IMS suspects meteorite at 300 lb.

  Dear Cmcdon0923:

You wrote -- And this was posted to the list for what reason? Was this
a
serious challengewas it meant to be humorous?...

Yes. I'll pay $200 in serious USA currency (small bills if you insist,
 none
of that funny new Euro stuff) for the 1911 Al Ahali newspaper. Laugh
 if
  you like.

You wrote -- do you have an issue surrounding government employees?

Yes. I deal with Lee County, Florida officials all day on land use and
zoning issues. They're lazy, arbitrary and stupid. I tell them this and
 they
throw spitballs at me. But to the point, Ron administers an
influential
 USA
Gov. website that we USA citizens pay for. It is traditional here that
our
government information sites not stray too-far from the truth. This
site
knowingly distributes information that is false. As a civic-minded
patriot
 I
know that this is wrong. It is my duty to object.

You wrote -- If you have a personal beef with Ron over the Nakhla
story,
then handle it that way- personally.

  Yes.

You wrote -- Just because Ron can't prove it happened, doesn't mean it
  didn't.

Really? Then everyone accused of a crime goes to jail.

You wrote -- Just because you can't prove it didn't happen, doesn't
mean
 it
  did.

Really? Illogical double negatives. What democracy are you from that
 forces a
person to prove he didn't commit a crime? Ron's law would have you
 wait
in jail until the Valera cow comes home (trust me, that's a l-o-n-g
time)
while he looks for the proof he knows exists. Luckily Cmcdon0923, in
the
USA, if there's no proof, it didn't happen and you walk a free
meteorite,
 er,
man. Have a beer on me. And take a cigar out of the box for the lady.

I want to thank CMcdon0923 for so wonderfully distilling this
discussion.
 In
the primeval past, a story claimed that a meteorite hit a dog and
killed
it. So sensational it was, that officials on the scene that refuted it
 were
ignored by the popular forces of ignorance. (What makes these forces
popular anyway? Who wants to hang around people that start their
 sentences
with -- Duh. Thank God I'm on this list with you good people.)

By effort (a pen, an envelope and a stamp) and serendipity, I easily
found
that NO evidence exists that a dog was struck by a meteorite in Egypt in
1911. Any of you would have found the same if you weren't so busy
trading
NWA's. I'm sure if Ron had discovered this he would correctly state
the
truth on the website he works for us citizens and at least one more
 asteroid
would be named after him -- Ron-- but I don't expect or want any such
 honor
  for myself (hold your applause).

And after all, NONE OF THIS IS important if we all get radioactive
anthrax
  tomorrow.

But IF WE MANAGE TO EXCAPE certain excruciating death tomorrow, than
this
 IS
the seminal meteorite story. Boys and girls, it didn't happen. Now
let's
all grow up and be good little scientists and admit it didn't happen.

BTW - Thank you each and every one for emailing me your favorite
Nakhla
 dog
(sic) photo attachments with their heads blown off, I'm touched by your
  sentiments.

Subject: [meteorite-list] Update - InnSuites Meteorite Auction

 Hi Folks!

Last chance! I have only twelve (12) slots remaining for consignments for
the Second Annual Meteorite Auction at the InnSuites in Tucson on Sunday,
February 10th.

If you wish to make a consignment, please get in touch QUICKLY!

 Further exciting news:

--We have snagged auctioneer Claudia Florian--a former auctioneer for
Phillips  Sothebys--to run this sale;
--The advertisement in the current issue of Smithsonian has already
resulted in dozens of catalog requests!
--Meteorites confirmed to be offered include, L'Aigle, NWA482, Camel
Donga, Manych, GV, Steinbach, Chassigny, Barbotan, Mauerkirchen, Ensisheim,
Shalka, Felix, etc.
--Once again, if you are an exhibitor at the Arizona Mineral Fossil
Show, you are entitled to consign one lot without having to pay a
consignor's fee (courtesy of the Macovich Collection and the Great Zinn).

The Event: The InnSuites Meteorite Auction
Date: Sunday, February 10th 10.30 AM
 Location: InnSuites, Tucson / Poolside
 Early Registration/Preview: February 1-9 - 10.00AM - 6.00PM
 Day-of Registration/Preview: February 10 - 9.30-10.30AM
 Number of lots: 100
Targeted price point: $200 to $25,000
 Lots with no reserve: ~40%
 Consignor's fee: 10.0%
 Buyer's fee: 12.5%
 Limit per consignor: 4 lots
 Sell-through fee: 3%
 Insurance (if desired): 1%

 QUESTIONS:

Why should I consider consigning a meteorite to this sale?
 1. Guaranteed Interest. This offering will be heavily promoted. We are
also building on an outstanding buzz from last year's sale. Further, a
number of outstanding meteorites will be offered with NO RESERVES;
 2. Marketing commitment. $4000 in dedicated advertising will be spent
publicizing this event;
 3. Location. Host to one of Tucson's preeminent shows, the InnSuites is
centrally located and is indisputably Meteorite Central in Tucson;

 Where do I sign up?
Right here. Please fill-in the following info. A formal consignment form
will be sent to you provided that your property is accepted for this
auction. [My interest is only in creating a marketplace for fine meteorites
that are priced to sell, and to present this property to a crowd that is

fee that consignors accept PRIOR to the deduction of the 10% consignor's

reserves will be indicated in the catalog with a bullet (*).

Why would I want a reserve?
Reserves are used as a mechanism to protect the consignor so that an item
will not sell for too low a price. However, should a consignment's estimated
value be less than $300, no reserve will be allowed.

 What are estimated values?
A guideline of what it is believed the consignment should bring at
auction.

Do you prefer consignments with either no reserve.or low reserves?
Yes. Consignments with no reserves or modest reserves are far more likely
to result in a successful sale.

Can I insist on a high reserve?
No. If the reserve you wish to set is, in my estimation, too high, I will
refuse the consignment. The philosophy of this sale is to offer choice
merchandise that is attractively priced, which will result in a spirited
marketplace.

Are high reserves the only consideration in rejecting a consignment?
No. If I believe the consignment competes with too many other similar
consignments, it will be rejected. Consignments will be accepted on a
first-come, first-served basis.

As a consignor to the InnSuites auction, how much will this cost me?
If your consignment sells, your cost will be 10% of the hammer price (the
highest bid). If your lot fails to sell, the sell-through fee (and
insurance, if so desired) will result in a cost of either 3% or 4%
(w/insurance) of the reserve price of the consignment.

 Hello list,
I got my first 'meteorite' when I was in grade 1 (1991-92). The card that
came with it said that it was a meteorite but I know now that it was a
tektite, At least it only cost me as much as a tektite. The next day I
brought it to show-and-tell and promptly lost it (back in grade 1 I could
lose anything). I got my first meteorite a few years ago. It is a 7.6 gram
Canyon diablo that I got from bethany sciences for $15.00. I checked the
mail daily and when I finally held the little shiny red-brown I was
hooked.
Now I have 5 meteorites and a crapload of tektites. My biggest meteorite
is
a 285 gram moroccan that I got from Dean Bessey and It's really cool.

 Hello all-

The list seems a bit quiet as the holidays end, associations begin, and
Tucson draws near. I thought I'd fill up some bandwidth with this:

My first meteorite was a 52 gram etched part slice of Gibeon purchased
at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI). Prior to this
sighting, I had absolutely no idea that a single individual could be
sole owner of such a wonder. I gladly shelled out $110 for it and kept
it alone for many years. Then, during a period of time in my life driven
by boredom, I decided to go to the local fairgrounds for every gathering
they saw fit to hold. Antique glass, guns, knitting, poodles, and one
daygems. A chance encounter there with Edwin Thompson opened my eyes
to the fact that there were plenty more meteorites to be had. The rest
 is history, present, and future.

I would enjoy hearing how others got started, that first piece that
infected you with meteorite madness. Some of you have multi-million
dollar collections, others on this list only a few prized pieces. They
all had to start with one lowly piece as the foundation, the one we
will never sell or trade away. What was it?

P.S. If this thread has already been done, please forgive me and direct
 me to the archives.
