[meteorite-list] WANTED: Holbrook stones from historic sources (Nininger, Monnig, Univ. Mexico...)
Dear list, I'm looking to develop my sub-collection of Holbrook stones from historic sources. The rule is simple: the stone must have a painted number or original label or both, from a museum or from an early 20th century private collection. I already have some from AMNH, Smithsonian, Berger, Krantz and others. Since many meteorites were deaccessioned recently from the University of New Mexico, I thought that there might be some Holbrook from there available. I'm also actively looking for Holbrook stones with Nininger, Huss and Monnig numbers/labels Please contact me if you have anything for sale or trade ( http://www.thetricottetcollection.com/tradelist.html ) Thank you and a Happy New Year to all, Arnaud PS: Note my latest post on natural history specimens in antique vials on the TC website, Figure 3 shows some nice meteorites http://www.thetricottetcollection.com/historicalinvestigations_1.html The Tricottet Collection (Historic Minerals, Fossils Meteorites) http://www.thetricottetcollection.com/ http://www.facebook.com/TheTricottetCollection http://twitter.com/TricottetColl# __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

So if you have any Monnig specimen with EARLY number (NOT just the TCU-Huss Mxx.xx number), can you please contact me off list? I would need the following information: Monnig no., TCU-Huss no., weight, if possible chain-of-custody. For now, there is no plan to make a repository of images, but photographs are welcome. [meteorite-list] Biography of Oscar E. Monnig
Oscar E. Monnig (1902-1999), lawyer by training, worked his entire life in his family's wholesale and retail business in Fort Worth, Texas, to finally become CEO of the same company. He began collecting meteorites in the early 1930s. Autodidact, he amassed one of the most important private meteorite collections of the 20th century and played a significant role in the Meteoritics community. On his spare time, he helped recover new meteorite falls and old finds, some of which may have been lost to science without his thorough investigations... And the rolling grassy hills are exactly what is under development - 172 acres of it. There's no guarantee that there are more SJC meteorites to be found, but if guarantees are what you're looking for then you've got the wrong hobby! The area to be developed is brushland that abuts the trailer park, and if anyone does want to find more SJC then its really the only option as everything else is paved. The development could be a blessing, if only the gomers in charge would give me the courtesy of returning my calls. They'll have to remove brush and disturb the soil, which would be a nice target for some metal detecting. Anyways; it's out there if anyone is interested. My own Plan B is to contact individual homeowners in the new development, show them some meteorites, and tell them to keep an eye out. Cheers, Marc On 6/1/11 8:51 PM, jason utas wrote: Hello All, I've gotten the impression from the emails on the list that people believe that this fall consisted of two separate stones. The fall consisted of a single stone that fell without sonic effects or any real witnesses; a neighbor recalled hearing a loud noise (when the stone likely hit the awning that it penetrated), but, had it not been for the astuteness of the homeowner whose property was damaged, the fall would likely have gone unnoticed. The fragment mentioned as having been found in a gutter a month later was found in the gutter of the same awning that the main mass penetrated, and most likely broke off of the main mass when it hit the awning. It would undoubtedly be worthwhile to look for other fragments in the surrounding area, but we must put things in perspective. Since strewn-fields are almost always miles in width, let alone length, the fact that the relatively tiny development is being resurfaced seems unimportant, at least to me. The area is bordered by rolling grassy hills that are in no immediate danger of being developed. - To say nothing of the fact that the illegal night-time hunting for/of new Canyon Diablo specimens is apparently widely accepted by our collecting community. California's second witnessed fall was heralded by a witnessed, large, fragmenting fireball; there's more of that to be found, for those who have the time and are experienced backpackers... Works published before 1978 remain protected under copyright law for 75 years from the date of their original publication. Works published on or after January 1, 1978 as protected by copyright laws until 50 years after the death of the author. 2. As for the newspaper no longer existing, I believe the above rule applies. If the newspaper company owned the copyright (i.e. the article was written by a staff member) then the copyright will expire based on it's publication date as described above. If it was reader contributed or written by a person who was not employed by the newspaper, then the author owns the copyright, and not the newspaper and the date of death would apply. 3. Your intended use for educational, non-commercial value would most likely be viewed as fair use based on the mission of your organization, however given the very public nature of the web and your desire to be as clean as possible legally, I would suggest that you spend a little money for advice from an attorney who specializes in copyright law. A few hundred dollars now could be well worth the savings if a disgruntled person saw their information published on a public website without their permission. 4. I am not familiar with copyrights laws and how they apply to personal correspondence. Surely documents that you have written are yours freely to use, however the ones written by others may be a different story. I'm not going to say any more on this because I simply don't know. There are lots of restrictions of fair use too...so be mindful that just because a person intends to use a published work for educational purposes that you can use another person's work in its entirety. Restrictions are in place that limit how much of a work can be used, even for educational purposes. There are also time limits in some instances, in instances known as 'spontaneous' copies. An example of this would be if a story was just published and waiting to obtain copyright permission for educational use would cause the loss of educational value, then fair use comes into play. Even then there are still restrictions on the amount of the source that may be copied and the amount of images that may be copies as well. In my opinion, it's worth getting an informed decision by someone qualified. Mind you, I am not an attorney, but simply a teacher who has done research on this in the past. [meteorite-list] Cold asteroids may have a soft heart
Sorry if already posted... A new analysis of one of the most well-known meteorites on Earth provides strong evidence that the prevailing view of many asteroids is wrong. Rather than randomly mixed blobs of rock and dust stuck together, it appears that the asteroid that was the source of the Allende meteorite was large enough to have had a molten core, even though its surface remained cold and solid. The new view also suggests that astronomers’ view of how planets like the Earth formed may need revision... http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2011/allende-analysis-0408.html http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2011/03/28/1017165108 The Tricottet Collection (Historic Minerals, Fossils Meteorites) http://www.thetricottetcollection.com/ http://www.facebook.com/TheTricottetCollection http://twitter.com/TricottetColl# __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Collection numbers interest me, so I've done a bit more research over the past few days. Just to recap: Dave and I both recently acquired nice, uncleaned and slightly rusted Sikhotes from Rob Wesel (thanks Rob). They carry a white gauze label, with four-digit typewritten collection numbers. Steve Schoner was quite certain these are Russian National Academy of Sciences numbers, and Rob provided some useful info and photos, and also had a labelling question (I think I have your answer, Rob, see below). However, the actual numbers on our specimens don't match Krinov's numbers, so there was some doubt. First off, Rob, in style the labels do appear to match the photos you supplied here: http://home.planet.nl/~rlenssen/SA1.jpg and here: http://home.planet.nl/~rlenssen/SA2.jpg I find it odd that specimens with really low numbers, like the one in Rob's photo 0067, and mine 0112, were evidently not collected during the first expedition to Sikhote-Alin, due to the light coating of rust. You would expect the really low numbers to have been from the earliest expedition (and therefore to be in nearly pristine condition), but I suppose they could have been numbered out of order at a later date -- back in Moscow or St. Petersburg. Or maybe they were just left outside in an old crate somewhere : ) Anyway, I have to agree with Steve S., and I think I've found proof that these are official Russian labels. Earlier this year, I had the good fortune to acquire a signed copy of Krinov's book about Tunguska and Sikhote-Alin. This book used to belong to Dr. Elbert King, and I ended up with it thanks to Steve Arnold of I.M.B. The book is (obviously) in Russian and, as far as I know, has unfortunately never been translated into English. My very basic Russian is not up to the task. The title reads (phonetically) Zhelezny Dozhd, and the cover is a two-color reprint of the famous Sikhote-Alin stamp

The Second Huss Collection was the personal collection of Glenn and Margaret. I believe it was acquired by NHMV sometime in the 1980's. In the Second Huss Collection of Meteorites (1986), Glenn states that it was started in 1958 and was financed by personal funds. Since the AML was established in 1960, both collections ran in parallel for a period of time. [meteorite-list] Paper on Risk Assessment of Tunguska-type Airbursts
Risk Assessment of Tunguska-type Airbursts by Mignan et al., Nat. Hazard J., 2010 http://www.springerlink.com/content/c34200750300l724/ Abstract The Tunguska airburst, which devastated a taiga forest over an area greater than 2,000 km2 in a remote region of Central Siberia in 1908, is a classic example of extraterrestrial encounter discussed in the asteroid/comet impact hazard and risk assessment literature (e.g. Longo 2007; Carusi et al. 2007). Although it is generally agreed that the cosmic body caused damage by bursting in the air rather than through direct impact on the Earth’s surface, the Tunguska event is often referred to as an impact event. To the best of our knowledge, no detailed studies have been performed to quantify the risk of a similar-sized event over a populated region. We propose here a straightforward probabilistic risk model for Tunguska-type events over the continental United States and use established risk metrics to determine the property (buildings and contents) and human losses. We find an annual average property loss of ~USD 200,000/year, a rate of ~0.3 fatalities/year and ~1.0 injuries/year ranging from a factor 3 below and to a factor 3 above the indicated values when a reasonable rate uncertainty for Tunguska-type events is taken into account. We then illustrate the case of an extreme event over the New York metropolitan area. While we estimate that this “nightmare” scenario would lead to ~USD 1.5 trillion of property loss, ~3.9 millions of fatalities and ~4.7 millions of injuries, such event is almost impossible (occurrence once every ~30 million years) and should only be considered as an illustrative example. Hi Henry, list, my page on Kunya-Urgench, updated last weekend: http://www.thetricottetcollection.com/met_kunyaurgench.html (but no slice pic, sorry) ArnaudM The Tricottet Collection of Natural History Specimens (Minerals, Fossils Meteorites) www.thetricottetcollection.com Facebook: The Tricottet Collection Twitter: TricottetColl Date: Wed, 5 May 2010 17:37:22 -0700 From: hxmend...@yahoo.com To: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Subject: [meteorite-list] Help with Kunya-Urgench Okay so here is my first help request. A couple of weeks ago at the spring Denver gem and mineral show, I bought a supposed NWA classified meteorite from a dealer (whom I will not name as yet). The weather was awful that entire weekend and he hadn't gotten everything out if his van because if it. So the label for that endpiece was misplaced. I went back all three days and he had not found it yet. So we swapped info and he said he would try to find the label for it well as of today no luck. So I'm starting to think that my classified NWA that I paid a little over $1.00 a gram for is inevitably just going to stat an UNWA that I therefore overpaid for. But I called him a little while ago and now he says he found one orphaned label that says Kunya-Urgench so he thinks it might be that but he's not sure. There are very few pics of Kunya slices on the internet. Of the polished faces I was able to find only one looked like mine, on the Met Bulletin. The rest seemed different. Those had alot of white or gray in the matrix, whereas mine has a predominantly orangish/ tan matrix with lots of dark brown flecks interspersed throughout. So I'm doubtful but can't quite rule it out because of the one little pictured slice that does look like mine. So, does anyone have any Kunya-Urgench, or have any experience with it that if I sent you pics of my endpiece you could help me rule out or in this murky ID? Oh and the outside crust looks like what you see on NWA's in color and texture. HELP!! On a good note. I did get a nice Crusted fragment of Trilby Wash from him. Larry Sloan was there and verified that one. Re: [meteorite-list] Labeling specimens
Hello, I would like to disagree with everyone here. If we all start painting numbers on meteorites, in 2-3 generations, all specimens will be full of useless graffiti - who will know which number matches which minor collection? So the problem would remain exactly the same. When I say minor, I mean not a lot of people have a collection which can be compared to a Nininger, Monnig or any national museum collection! And with time, with more maturity, what if you find your inventory numbering system inefficient, what if you decide to change it? Personally I will never paint anything on my collection specimens. I prefer to take 1 or more pictures per specimen + weight + other important characteristics, label them and keep then in different boxes. Re: [meteorite-list] Tunguska rates
Hi E.P. et al., actually, what the journalist of BI wrote is inaccurate. You can read in our report that we used 1 per 1000 years as our preferred value, following the most up-to-date frequency-size distribution [Brown et al, 2002], but we also tested 1 per 200 years [Shoemaker, 1983] and noted that the rate could be far higher if hypotheses from geomythology and related were to be verified. Whether this represents a short term phenonmenon or the long term rate is not currently known. I used to put together catalogues of known and suspected impacts, you may want to google that, and if you have not bought a copy of Man and Impact in the Americas yet, well, it is the best available recent impact rate data for the Americas.
