What's particularly amazing is how close this comet will come to Mars

NASA/JPL will have plans in the works to schedule instrument pointing

Hi Marc,

Just a quick comment on your recent post about the Whitmire, SC, fall on
February 13th earlier this year. You posted:

For one, this event slipped through the cracks before Galactic
Analytics
LLC was formed. Now that this work is underway as a subscription-based
effort, it allows us to dedicate the time necessary to properly write
up events like this in the future.

The slipped through the cracks phrase might mislead some into thinking
that no prior recognition or analysis of this fall has been done, when
in fact a significant expenditure of manhours and financial resources
have gone into it. If you missed Bob Verish's write-up in Meteorite

it is well worth reading as it includes a wealth of information that has
been collected and analyzed for this fall: radar data, witness reports
and interviews, Stuart McDaniel's all-sky camera recording,
seismographic
data, upper atmospheric winds, and boots on the ground descriptions
and photos of the ground conditions:

Phil, List,

As the sarcastic individual who suggested a
need for Blimp Patches, I apologize. It is, literally,
a Zeppelin, built by the Zeppelin company in
Friedrichshafen, Germany, home of the original
Zeppelins. At 246 feet long, she stretches 15
feet longer than a standard Boeing 747 and 50
feet longer than the largest commercial blimps
flying today. It is named Eureka, nicely matching
the history of Sutter's Mill. Maybe the name will
bring good luck.

http://www.airshipventures.com/about
Unlike the original Zeppelins, it is a semi-rigid
design, lacking a full envelope frame like the old
ones. However, it is made of carbon fibre and
aluminum, has very sophisticated motive control,
with vectored thrust and fly-by-wire controls, and
has incredible maneuverability.

That said, trying to maneuver close to the ground
in that terrain in a weightless craft almost as long
as a football field is a daunting prospect. All old
airshipmen know the dangers are near the ground,
not in the sky.

Zeppelin Patches?

Hi List,

This is a curiosity-based question. I know many list members have
outstanding and enviable collections. The Hupes, Farmer, Cottingham,
Strope, and Kilgore come to mind as dealers/collectors who have insane
collections of meteorites that most collectors would drool over. Main
masses, football-sized planetaries, coffee-table sized slabs of
pallasite, and historical rarities populate many high-end collections.

But, what I am curious about is - number of localities. What
collector has the most localities represented in their collection?
This number could include sub-gram micros, so I am thinking that the
biggest collection (in terms of localities and not specimen size)
might not belong to one of the obvious heavyweights we would expect.

If there was a leaderboard for number of localities, who would be
sitting on top of that list?

Using the EOM website as a rough guide, it seems that Gerald Armstrong
has an impressive catalog of localities. But not every major
collector uses the EOM, so who is top dog?

For the record, my own collection numbers about 80 localities. This
number fluctuates frequently because my collection has a high turnover
rate, and I have had to sell off my entire collection three times to
pay bills. My locality count has dipped as low as 10 and peaked as
high as 130. Of course, this is small potatoes. LOL.

Best regards,

MikeG

I wouldn't be so quick there, just because no on has ever CAPTURED or KILLED

Nothing has been found where the radar data said it might be. Torvald
and Donavan have left the zone replaced by Stephen Thompson out of
Fredricksburg TX who is an expert on Sonic Boom characteristics.

I've been lucky enough to get some media attention to try to motivate
the public to assist here is today's interview on TV. This is the 5 TV
 interview I've given since arriving.

 http://dfw.cbslocal.com/video/6713580-meteor-hunters-scouring-north-texas/

We spent the day interviewing more witnesses compiling and extending
the range of sonic boom farther to the east to include Wills Point, and
 southern Lake Tawakanii.

We'll do some field samplings tomorrow east of 19.

Also as a warning. I've heard from a local that the landowner who owns
the land in the north where the upper radar blip is, has gotten very
hostile to all outsiders. The local warned me to tell everyone to stay
off that property. He thinks the landowner may shoot to wound or maim.
So I'd like everyone to take that threat to heart.

At this point, we have two new important observations and think the
strewnfield to be east of 19 now.
At this point, there have been no Z sightings, but the Black Panther
remains a constant threat. 5 dogs were killed. Also, the park rangers
at the state park warned us that a mountain lion has been spotted in the
 area.

Some sonic boom activity has been traced back to some individual using
some kind of reactive explosive that detonates when shot by a bullet.
The local police has informed us this has been a bit of a problem for
weeks. Consequently, it really screws up our acoustical survey.

and a mention and big hand to Dirk Ross, David Gonzales, and Marc Fries
 for giving us back support.

E. P.,

Simple question - what classes of
 meteorites have CAI inclusions?

Simple answer: any kind of chondrite.

However, most common in carbonaceous
chondrites, particularly CV's. They contain
more refractory elements than the ordinary
condrules they are found with. They were
formed at higher temperatures and many
show signs of repeated meltings. They are
older than the next most early solar system
materials, the chondrules, by 2,000,000
years or so. Two different dating methods
give ages of 4567 my and 4571 my.for CAI's.

Doug, that was a long email but I will try to answer your questions with
 another long email.

I am very new to the meteorite collection and just fell in love with them
when I purchased my first set of these from Martin Horejsi. My experience
with him was so pleasant that I just assumed that others in the meteorite
community will be just like him. He didn’t want me to buy anything but
asked me to learn about them before he would even consider selling them
to me. I guess I should have known this since he is a professor by day
and meteorite collector by night. After I spent 3 days learning about
meteorites and their classification with him at an education event, he
sent me home with the briefcase full of meteorites and told me to pay
when I get home and think about it again. He told me that he will take
anything and everything back if I ever decided that I have made a mistake
 in purchasing them.

Back to Martin Altman and Stefan, it was a different experience. Martin
will tell great story about each meteorite and kept suggesting to buy
it. I was willing to look at these well described meteorites since I was
assured of full refund if I return them within 3 weeks (their website
clearly states that any customer can ask for full refund for any reasons
within 30 days). They asked me to pay them full amount by wire (which
should have been my first warning sign) before shipping them but they
again assured me that I can return anything within 3 weeks. I contacted
Martin back within hours of my receiving the meteorites to let him know
that I plan to return 2 out of 9 meteorites because they didn’t look
how I imagined from the picture and their description. I also did a bit
of research on them and was not thrilled with their quality.

I am not sure if the meteorites are fake but they are certainly very low
quality for the premium price I paid for these. I have since gotten to
know Greg Hupe Adam Hupe and Michael Farmer. They each have given me
unconditional 30 days money back guarantee and I have really enjoyed
 working with them.

I tried very hard to resolve the issue with Martin and Stefan but Stefan
didn’t want to resolve anything and told me Martin has no authority to
return anything but can only sell stuff on his behalf. I am still hoping
that Meteorite community can put enough moral pressure on Stefan and
Martin Altman to do the right and fair thing.

Just to answer your question specifically, I wanted to return Lunar Kreep
because it just doesn’t look right to me and it was never touched,
polished or modified in any way.

Martin had one Urelite that needed classification but Stefan didn’t
want to slice the piece for classification so he hammer broke a piece to
send for analyses. Martin suggested that they should polish the broken
surface before sending it to me along with polishing one other green
Lunar meteorite that desperately needed polishing. I simply agreed what
Martin said he needed to do before shipping with these meteorites.
Irrespective, I am not even returning the Urelite specimen that was
 polished anyway.

I think it was simply a greed and large sum that blinded them of their
morals and obligations. Stefan and Martin Altman finally decided to sell
their soul for large sum of money. IMCA board tried very

I didn't know there was a quality to a meteorite. A meteorite is a meteorite
is a meteorite. They are what they are. We don't have cheap ones made in China,
high quality ones made in Germany.Come on. Certainly there are prettier
ones, neater ones, and odd ones but nowhere have I ever seen there could be a

I was given unconditional guarantee to be able to return item within 3

priced individually and I was offered approx. 12%-13% discount on the
package of meteorites. IMCA looked at all these details when they offered 3
options to Martin Altman and Stefan to resolve the issues. Essentially, they
adjusted the price of each item on pro-rated prices based on the discount
percentage.

Is there someone on the list who is willing to help the newcomer resolve

It's not necessarily that easy , if you arrange a deal with two centrepieces

To me it sounds like someone has, at best, been naive and not done their
homework.  Caveat emptor applies when you're buying a pint of milk; it
certainly applies if you're ponying up a quarter million bucks.

A quarter million dollars on something, mail order, for something only
viewed in photographs?  For real?

I think that this discussion should make people think carefully about their
deals - both from whom they buy, and to whom they sell.

 Hello All,

 please see the list archives:

 http://www.mail-archive.com/meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com/msg98693.html

What you might not know is that I personally took responsibility for
(dis)proving the authenticity of his sales after noticing that much of
what he was selling looked funny -- starting back in January 2010.
Ultimately, a number of samples were sent directly from people who had
purchased them from John/Bryan to a lab for analysis, and, as the
above emails details, an Ash Creek turned out to be an H-chondrite,
a fragment of Zunhua turned out to be indistinguishable from
Tamdakht (Zunhua is an L-chondrite, not an H), and an iron that he'd
been selling as Deport turned out to be what is most likely a Campo
 del Cielo.

His explanations of how these mistakes had occurred were extremely
dissatisfying; the IMCA board apparently thought as much, because the
opted to remove him from the membership.

The trouble is that someone, apparently, told him that I did much of
the investigative work. How do I know this? Jeff Kuyken, on the IMCA
board of directors, just informed me that John/Bryan has changed his
ebay username to meteoritekid, my old internet alias.

My ebay username is *not* meteoritekid. Please do not buy from
anyone using the name meteoritekid on ebay. John/Bryan is
attempting to impersonate me online in order to get back at me for
having tracked his shady dealings down.

I would not personally trust the authenticity of any specimen he sells.

I am currently taking a geology field mapping course in Montana and do
not have a working phone. When I return home in a few days, I will be
pursuing this matter with ebay. If that does not work, I will pursue
it legally. If anyone on here has experience with similar issues
within ebay, I'd like whatever help I can get.

 - Do not buy from the ebay seller meteoritekid. It is not me, and
John/Bryan has proven that he is willing to sell a wide variety of
 material that is misrepresented.

 Thank You,
 Jason

is preserving the collection for posterity and for future study with

rocks are treated like a national treasure. As many of you may know,
the curation protocols at JSC are the gold standard for
extraterrestrial sample handling. For example, the collection is kept
in high purity nitrogen, only materials restricted to of short list of
aluminum, stainless steel, and Teflon are allow to touch the samples.
The curation facility was built as a clean lab with positive air

and just to be on the safe side NASA has placed 15% of the collection
at White Sands Test Facility, a few miles outside Las Cruces, New
Mexico, locked away for safe keeping just in case of a catastrophic
loss of the Lunar Lab in Houston. When people think about what a Mars
Sample Return Lab design might look like, the first place they start
from is the Lunar Sample Lab.

Clearly, JSC does a fabulous job of handling, curating, and keeping
the lunar samples safe, there is no museum or private collector in the
world that comes close to Lunar Lab quality. However, the one thing
that I think is missing from this facility is an equally spectacular
public outreach component. Sure, the public can look at a few Moon
rocks at museum displays here and there nationwide, but very few
people ever get the privilege of being a visitor at the Lunar Lab. It
is NOT open to the public. I think NASA, and JSC in particular, could
enhance its image and boost public excitement and support for
astromaterials research by somehow giving better public access to view
these crown jewels in their laboratory setting.

You may have guessed already that I'm not a big proponent of selling
off the Moon Rocks to fund NASA missions, as a few people on the list
have proposed. Even if Americans thought this was a good idea, I am
pretty sure we would come up a few billion dollars short to do
anything like a decent robotic Mars Sample Return. Furthermore, I
doubt if many Americans would be in favor of cutting up pieces of the
Declaration of Indepence or chunks of the Liberty Bell to sell as high
priced souvenirs, or sell off tracts of Yellowstone Park to reduce our
nation's debt. But I do think the Lunar Collection could be opened up
to the public in away that would be beneficial to everyone, not the
least to NASA itself.

Hi Carl and List,

Thanks for your perspective Carl. When framed in that context,
selling the Apollo rocks does seem a bit silly.

However, would the same Liberty Bell comparison hold true for ANSMET
specimens? There must be some leftovers or crumbs from the ANSMET
collection that would fetch a small fortune on the collector market.
I'd pay a premium for micromounts from ANSMET.

I didn't mean any disrespect towards the US, NASA, or science by
suggesting that NASA should sell off a small portion of it's
collection. And I agree that the proceeds from the sale would not be
nearly enough to fund a space mission. But I think it could generate
a useful amount of cash that could be put towards good purposes.

I also agree that the Apollo and ANSMET collections should be more
accessible to the public. Perhaps a permanent in-house display with a
self-guided tour could generate a small amount of revenue - charge for
admission and have a gift shop located by the entry/exit with tiny
lucite-encased samples for sale, themed collector displays, and
memorabilia (T-shirts, etc). Of course, it would have to be done
tastefully and respectfully, so it would seem too commercial.

This is surely a pipe-dream, but us laymen have to dream.. :)

One more idea just occurred to me - sell one spot per year on the
ANSMET team to the highest competent bidder. As it stands now, one
has to be degreed to be considered (or be a well-recommended grad
student). But if they would allow the advanced layman to bid for
chance to join the team, I know I would register to bid in a
heartbeat!

Best regards,

Then the Space Shuttle.

 don't recall the price.
This was a real actual tile with numbers on it indicating where it
went on
the shuttle not just the material used to make real tiles as
indicated on

Blaine's was significantly more expensive because it was real but, I
don't
think it was flown in space.
I was able to hold it. It weighs almost nothing. It feels like you

First, foremost and most importantly, I'm glad you and your finger are on
the mend. Your unfortunate experience reminds me of why I don't trust
car jacks and carry around a small portable floor jack, whenever and
wherever I drive.

Secondly, the recent posting of your offered inventory is very helpful to
someone such as myself, a retiree subsisting on a modest fixed income.
It really permits to me gather my wits about me and carefully determine
and select the meteoritic products that most catch my fancy and benefit
my circumstances. You are a credit to your profession and a first rate
dealer and marketeer.

All meteorite dealers, from my view, would do well to emulate your
business model.

Finally, I'm developing a specific gravity data base for meteorite
samples. I'm wondering if you can provide total weights of some of your
meteorite micromounts upon specific request? Mostly I require samples of
no less than a carat for accurate specific gravity determinations.

Thanks for your time, energy and business acumen!

With best wishes for your speedy recovery.

Hi all,

I'm getting better at one-handed typing. LOL

I was trying to change the flat tire on my crippled car (blown head
gasket) and my hand slipped and hit a sharp edge on the backside of
the wheel cover. I didn't feel anything, but looked down and saw a
1cm chunk of meat from my forefinger laying on the ground, followed by
the inevitable heavy bleeding. It was a slicing motion which shaved
off the meat on fleshy-side of my finger where the fingerprint is.
It's not the type of wound that can be stitched and the piece is not
big enough to sew back on. It didn't go to the bone thankfully. No
point in seeing the doctor because he will only do what I already did
- clean wound, apply medicine, wrap it up, and give me antibiotics
(which I already have some). Besides, I don't have real medical
insurance, so my only recourse would be a 10-hour wait at the
emergency room to get the same treatment I just gave myself. Can't
afford the fee for a walk-in clinic either.

It's throbbing like a mofo now because I have it wrapped so tight to
stop the bleeding.

Week of epic bad luck - car blew head gasket, car got flat tire,
jeweler scale broke, one of our cats died from feline leukemia, and
now I slice off a chunk of my finger.

It's going to be difficult to prepare micromounts and pack orders, so
I will be enlisting my wife later to do that for me. She is going to
get a crash course in making up micromounts.

I only posted this to the list so that the people who ordered stuff
from me will understand the slight delay in getting these orders out.

Now, one thing a doctor could possibly do is give me some pain
medicine, but as they say - no pain no gain, no agony no braggony.
Just gotta put my big-boy pants on and suck it up buttercup. LOL

Stumpy McGee

Hi David,

When cutting meteorites (or suspected meteorites), use distilled water
only has a saw coolant/lubricant. Using anything else invites
contamination and instability in the specimen.

I own a large N52 rare earth magnet. It's quite powerful, and small
metal objects will fly across the table and stick it from several
inches away. This type of magnet will detect the smallest metal
content in a specimen that small magnets will miss. However, be
careful, the larger magnets can be dangerous if you hand or fingers
get caught between the magnet and a metal object. Not to mention,
keep it away from your laptop and grandpa's pacemaker.

The largest rare earth magnets are so powerful, they will attract
iron-enriched food items, like dog kibbles!

Do you have any photos of your specimen, or did you post them already
and I missed it?

Thanks to all who responded to my non-magnetic meteorite question.

This would seem to rule-out both basalt (s.g. 2.7-3.1) and Tatahouine, a
Diogenite with a specific gravity range of at about 3.30 to 3.47.

In rechecking the magnetic value, for the first time with a super magnet
hanging from a string and carefully bringing the specimen to the magnet,
I can see there is a ever-so-slight magnetic attraction which I had not
 previously noticed and detected.

This is an important lesson for me: ALWAYS DOUBLE CHECK MAGNETIC VALUES
WITH A SUPER MAGNET HANGING FROM A THREAD!

Also rechecked my Tatahouine specimen and, LO and Behold, this, too, has
an ever-so-slight magnetic attraction. You might want to take note of
 this info, Pete at pshu...@messengersfromthecosmos.com.

The s.g and slight magnetic attraction of this specimen suggests that
this may be a type CM Carbonaceous Chondrite, according to the printed
values published in the 2002 paper by Britt and Consolmagno, I suppose.

I'm thinking of cutting this specimen. Anyone on the list able to
suggest the preferred lubricant to minimize potential contamination
 issues?

Again, thanks to everyone who took time to offer their insights on my
 little mystery stone.

 I wouldn't have had a clue, otherwise!

  Dear List Members,
A new fall has just occurred in Poland: a hammer!
Here is some information about the circumstanses of
 the fall:
The meteorite fell on 30 April at 6 a.m. in Soltmany
 villige, near the
town of Gizycko. The ~1kg stone hit the roof of a
 building and was
discovered broken into a few pieces. This
 information about the fall
comes from a Mr. Roman who called Andrzej Pilski
 from Frombork
  Astronomical Observatory. Andrzej Pilski immediately
 asked Woreczko
and Wadi to go to the fall location, take photos, and
 ask eyewitnesses
for reports, as well as to see the stone and obtain a
 sample for
  analysis.
The classification will be done by professor T.
 Przylibski from the
  Wroclaw University of Technology. Frombork
 Observatory wants to buy
  meteorite for their museum.
  Best regards

Re: [meteorite-list] Impact Question

2011-04-25 Thread actionshooting
Thanks guys for the answers but let's keep it peaceful here, I wasn't trying to
start a pissing contest.

Sterling, I appreciate the detailed answer and that certainly explains alot. I
was only referring to Chixalub becasue it was on TV and it was big. We could be
talking about ANY impact of that size, nothing specific.

My specific question was where the fire from an impact came from. I realize now
about the heat energy created is great enough to ignite a fire unlike a bullet.
Though I do know a bullet creates a certain amount of heat energy upon impact,
enough to melt steel.

I guess I was looking at it in too simple of terms.i.e. if I drop a rock at
40,000ft/sec what would make it ignite on impact. Didn't seen to me a rock
hitting the ground should ignite, but now I see there are many other factors
that come into play.

Your over-reactive reply to my answer is why many people on lists don't get

Stuart, Barrett, List,

Let's get our physics straight.

The mechanisms being talked about here:
burning from entry and inertia... travel[ing]
into the earth are missing the point. These are
not causes, but rather effects.

All isolated, disconnected bodies have a certain
amount of energy in them. A small asteroid traveling
through space has energy that can be described
in many way depending on what other body you
reference it to.

All bodies in free motion in a field, like a gravitational
field, have a potential energy determined by their
position and their motion. Imagine you are standing
in your backyard with a nice chunk of rock in your
hand.

Motionless in your hand, held up by a force from your
muscles equal to the Earth's gravitational pull, it has
no kinetic energy at all, because it isn't moving. But it
does have potential energy. It you were to release it,
that rock would move under the invisible influence
of the mysterious gravity field that we all take for
granted because we've lived in it all our lives. It
would start to fall...

It would speed up as it fell and acquire an increasing
amount of kinetic energy, more the faster it went.
Oddly, its total energy wouldn't change. No, its potential
energy would decrease as its kinetic energy increased
because it was getting closer to the center of the
gravitational field, a position of less potential energy.

And the total energy of the rock, the sum of its potential
and kinetic energy would be constant, unchanging.
Dropping rocks is not that exciting, so let's throw that
rock straight up with all your strength, as high as you
can toss it.

It's going very fast when it leaves your hand, but as it
rises and gets further away from the center of the Earth's
force field of gravity, it goes slower and slower. Its
potential energy is increasing from its new position at
the expense of its declining kinetic energy.

Finally, all the energy you gave the rock from your
muscles will be transformed into potential

 Hi Stuart and Bill,

I tend to agree with Stuart on this one. Although, the damage done
would depend on several factors, including the angle and speed of the
descent. The type of roof would make a difference also. The roof of
an industrial or hardened structure might resist penetration, but I
think a typical residential or commercial roof would be penetrated to
great effect by an 8-pound meteorite.

However unlikely, it could have fallen from the wheel well of an
airplane. It could have also been thrown by a large wood chipper
operating a block away. Also, one cannot discount the power of
drunken hooligans who like to cause damage for no logical reason.
With meteorite hammer falls being so rare, there are a multitude of
possible explanations that are more likely, even though some scenarios
might seem far-fetched. Strange things happen.

If there were no reports of a bolide in the region, then the meteorite
 theory becomes even more improbable.

 Best regards,

 MikeG

thing that gets cherry-picked for effect. Yes, there are meteorites
that are bought and sold illegally, and that's bad. There are also a
hell of a lot of meteorites in research collections that would be
rusting away in a desert somewhere if it weren't for collectors. That's
good. I have no doubt that Ralph is fully aware of both sides of the
argument, and I highly doubt that he intended to label all meteorite
collection everywhere as a flaming travesty against all of humanity,
the majority of puppies, and most unicorns everywhere.
Here's another recent article that makes a point pertinent to this
discussion (before it loses track and goes Fox-bashing), namely that
science reporting has taken a sharp decrease in quality lately as the
major media outlets have done away with dedicated science writers:

http://tinyurl.com/3llqgay

Recent stories on life in CI meteorites, natural atomic bomb
blasts on Mars, and now this story are symptoms of a bigger problem,
namely the lack of well-informed treatment of science issues by the
major media outlets. Science stories are increasingly handled by
writers who are looking for high-impact, wow-factor news items as
opposed to lower-key but better-informed articles by science journalism
professionals. I can say from my own experience that it is rather
frustrating to attend conferences where I see all manner of well
thought-out, interesting research presented, and then to turn around
and see little more than sensationalistic crap wind up front and center
in the major media. That's not good for anyone - the really interesting
stuff never reaches a wider audience, and the public winds up thinking
that scientists waste their time and tax dollars on embarrassing
nonsense like the examples I stated above. I think that's the effect
we're seeing in this NYT article at least in part, and while it is
unfortunate it doesn't surprise me much.

Cheers,
Marc Fries

 RELEASE: 11-098

SCIENTISTS FIND NEW TYPE OF MINERAL IN HISTORIC METEORITE

HOUSTON -- NASA and co-researchers from the United States, South Korea
and Japan have found a new mineral named Wassonite in one of the
most historically significant meteorites recovered in Antarctica in
 December 1969.

The new mineral was discovered within the meteorite officially
designated Yamato 691 enstatite chondrite. The meteorite was
discovered the same year as other landmark meteorites Allende and
Murchison and the return of the first Apollo lunar samples. The study
of meteorites helps define our understanding of the formation and
 history of the solar system.

The meteorite likely may have originated from an asteroid orbiting
between Mars and Jupiter. Wassonite is among the tiniest, yet most
important, minerals identified in the 4.5-billion-year-old sample.
The research team, headed by NASA space scientist Keiko
Nakamura-Messenger, added the mineral to the list of 4,500 officially
approved by the International Mineralogical Association.

Wassonite is a mineral formed from only two elements, sulfur and
titanium, yet it possesses a unique crystal structure that has not
been previously observed in nature, said Nakamura-Messenger.

In 1969, members of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition
discovered nine meteorites on the blue ice field of the Yamato
Mountains in Antarctica. This was the first significant recovery of
Antarctic meteorites and represented samples of several different
types. As a result, the United States and Japan conducted systematic
follow-up searches for meteorites in Antarctica that recovered more
than 40,000 specimens, including extremely rare Martian and lunar
 meteorites.

Researchers found Wassonite surrounded by additional unknown minerals
that are being investigated. The mineral is less than one-hundredth
the width of a human hair or 50x450 nanometers. It would have been
impossible to discover without NASA's transmission electron
microscope, which is capable of isolating the Wassonite grains and
determining their chemical composition and atomic structure.

More secrets of the universe can be revealed from these specimens
 using 21st century nano-technology, said Nakamura-Messenger.

The new mineral's name was approved by the International Mineralogical
Association. It honors John T. Wasson, professor at the University of
California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Wasson is known for his achievements
across a broad swath of meteorite and impact research, including the
use of neutron activation data to classify meteorites and to
formulate models for the chemical makeup of bulk chondrites.

Meteorites, and the minerals within them, are windows to the
formation of our solar system, said Lindsay Keller, space scientist
at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. Keller is the
co-discoverer and principal investigator of the microscope used to
analyze the Wassonite crystals. Through these kinds of studies we
can learn about the conditions that existed and the processes that
 were occurring then.

Johnson's advanced work in nanotechnology is part of the center's
Astromaterial Research and Exploration Science Directorate. It is
currently the location for celestial materials that would be returned
to Earth from spacecraft. The facility collaborates with industry,
 academic and international organizations.

The beauty of this research is that it really demonstrates how the
Johnson Space Center has become a pre-eminent leader in the field of
nanoscale analysis, said Simon Clemett, a space scientist at Johnson
and co-discoverer of the new mineral. In the words of the great
English poet William Blake, we are now able 'to see the world in a
 grain of sand'.

Collaborators in the discovery of the new mineral include Clemett,
Keller and Zia Rahman in the Astromaterials Research and Exploration
Science Directorate at Johnson; Alan Rubin from UCLA; Byeon-Gak Choi
 from Seoul National University, South Korea;

Possible meteorite lights up sky, 911 phone lines

Published: Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 9:31 p.m.
Last Modified: Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 9:31 p.m.
A possible meteorite entering the Earth's atmosphere Tuesday evening had 911
centers in Southeastern North Carolina fielding multiple phone calls from
concerned residents.

Lisa Weldrick, a supervisor at the New Hanover County 911 Communications
center, said callers described witnessing what appeared to be a large
meteorite crossing the sky at a steep angle before burning out shortly after
7:30 p.m. She said callers described it as a shooting star and one man said
it looked like it had three propulsion systems.

Authorities in Brunswick and Pender counties also received multiple calls,
with some reports suggesting the meteorite had actually landed, but that
could not be verified Tuesday evening.

Meteorites are usually remnants of asteroids or comets that survive a fall
to the ground through Earth's atmosphere, according to Meteorite.org. But
some have proven to be pieces of moon or Mars that broke off after an impact
event and traveled through space.

The landlords got outlawyered:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/magazine/whatever-happened-to-the-lorton-meteorite-/2011/03/04/AB14tMq_story.html

By Neely Tucker, Sunday, March 20, 11:42 AM
When last we heard, Everybody's Favorite Meteorite was locked up in legal
limbo.

The oblong little rock from outer space lighted up the late afternoon sky
across Washington on Jan. 18, 2010, and rocketed into a doctors' office in
Lorton. Moving at a leisurely 200 mph, it crashed into examination room No.
2 in the Williamsburg Square Family Practice, even though it did not have an
appointment.

The startled (but unhurt) doctors, Marc Gallini and Frank Ciampi, donated it
to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, which houses the
world's largest collection of meteorites.

But then their landlords said not so fast: The 2-by-3-inch visitor from the
asteroid belt was estimated to be worth at least $50,000 on the earth-bound
meteorite market, in part because of its dramatic and well-documented
entrance. Thousands of people saw its fireball descent (the museum has a
photograph of the vapor trail), and radar sweeps documented its path across
the region.

The landlords demanded its return. Gallini said of their behavior: It isn't
nice. Legal wrangling ensued.

We are delighted, a year later, that there is a happy ending.

The landlords eventually dropped their claims, the Smithsonian gave the
doctors $10,000 for the Lorton meteorite (its formal name) in early
February, and the physicians donated the check to the charity Doctors
Without Borders last week. Linda Welzenbach, the meteorite collection
manager at the Smithsonian, says it will soon be on public display, though
no date has been set.

We are very happy that it's staying at the Smithsonian, Gallini says. We
felt that where it's belonged since the beginning.

Deniz Mutlu, a member of the family that owns the building, said his only
issue with events was that we got portrayed as the bad guys.

All we wanted to do was donate it to a different institution (Phillips
Exeter Academy, in New Hampshire), where my wife attended school, he said.
The doctors wanted to litigate. They had pro bono counsel. We just let it
go.

The meteorite, which existed for about 4.5 billion years floating around
between Mars and Jupiter, now spends its time in a little plastic box deep
in the Mason-Clarke Meteorite Vault in the Smithsonian. It has thousands of
other little asteroid friends, including three from Mars, to keep it
company.

Holding the Lorton meteorite with blue latex gloves, Welzenbach smiled.

It's going to stay here where everyone can see it.

Us gun and military collectors had to do the same a while back after ebay

easily see from the picture they were hi-cap. Ebay finally caught on to that
one too. They even suspended several of us for 30 days for doing so. They are a

Now this sounds interesting.

http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2011-03/16/nasa-fireball-network

US space agency Nasa is planning to cover the United States with cameras facing
upward to track meteorites as they enter the atmosphere.
The scheme, which has been named the All-sky Fireball Network will allow
researchers to triangulate observations of space rocks to try and figure out
where they're going to land, making them easier to recover. It's entirely
automated -- computers scan the images received to try and work out which
objects are meteors, and then send any positive results to Nasa, which puts
them on the web.
The network currently consists of just three cameras -- in the US states of
Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee. Nasa's William Cooke, head of the agency's
Meteoroid Environment Office, hopes to expand that to 15 cameras across the
eastern half of the US, and is talking to schools, planetariums and science
centres to host them. If someone calls me and asks 'What was that?' I'll be
able to tell them, he told Singularity Hub.
Other meteorite monitoring systems exist, particularly over the less-populated
western half of the US, but the Fireball Network is the first that's completely
automated, using optical recognition technology to identify the flaming
signature of a meteorite burning up in the atmosphere (or the occasional
spider). Eventually, it's hoped that the various meteor-monitoring networks
could link up to cover the whole country.
It's not a warning system -- once a meteor is detected it'll likely be too late
to alert any nearby residents. But data from the Fireball Network will be used
to improve the shielding used on spacecraft, as well as being kept as a record
of every large meteoroid to burn up over the US. It'll also help researchers
track more of them down.
One of Cooke's assistants told Nasa's Science News: Most meteorites fall in
the ocean, lakes, forests, farmer's fields, or the Antarctic…and the majority
of those meteorites will never be found. But our system will help us track down
more of them.

Galactic Stone and Ironworks meteoritem...@gmail.com wrote:
 Hi List,

All of this talk about the tsunami in Japan reminded me of an event
that happened here in Florida in 1992, that may have a meteorite
 connection.

On July 3rd, 1992, a 20-foot rogue wave appeared out of nowhere (calm
weather) and washed ashore on Daytona Beach, damaging many vehicles
parked along the beach and causing scores of minor injuries -
thankfully there were no fatalities. This event was big news down
here at the time, but has since faded into obscurity.

I did some digging on the event, to satisfy my own curiosity and I
came across an account that includes a possible meteorite fall.

Here is a quote from an eyewitness who was a boater that was offshore
 at the time -

...the boater came forward with the information that, shortly before
the time of the wave, he was in his boat about eight miles offshore.
He watched as a distant object approached across the sky toward the
ocean at a high rate of speed, and crossed the bow of his boat at an
angle with a whoosh (his word). Shortly after, a giant swell made
his 41-foot sailboat handle like a large surfboard. Various news
sources state that the meteorite, as it is now being called, was
anywhere from a meter to 10 feet across. The boater who wished to
remain anonymous, gave the professors enough information so that they
are hoping that the Navy will retrieve the object, which is presumed
to be lying in about 70 feet of water off the Daytona Beach coastline,
with plenty of coordinates for locating it.

 (source : http://www.science-frontiers.com/sf084/sf084g12.htm )

Does anyone remember this meteorite event? And, did anyone look for
the object? I know 70-feet of water is not exactly prime
meteorite-hunting territory, but one has to wonder what happened, in
 light of the eyewitness account.

 Best regards,

A Half-Gigabyte View of the Moon

Ever since NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter began circling the Moon at low
altitude in mid-2009, planetary scientists and the public have marveled at
the incredible trove of observations it's been beaming back to Earth. Most
often in the spotlight are the jaw-dropping closeups of Apollo landing sites
by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC). It can resolve the surface
at 2 feet (0.5 m) per pixel — good enough to reveal even the paths worn in
the lunar soil by the astronauts' boots.

A new 24,000-pixel-square mosaic from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter
shows the Moon's nearside as never before. Click here for a larger (but not
full-size!) version; a labeled version is here.
NASA / GSFC / Arizona State Univ. The work of LROC's wide-angle camera, which
provides surface context for those incredible narrow-angle shots, has largely
gone unheralded … until now. This past week the team released a new mosaic of
the Moon's near side taken entirely with wide-angle frames. Acquired during a
two-week period in December, the 1,300 black-and-white frames create a
full-disk mosaic measuring 24,000 pixels across. Gulp!
As the Moon rotated under LRO's orbit, explains LROC team leader Mark
Robinson (Arizona State University), the ground track progressed from east
to west (right to left in this mosaic). The image run was timed to keep the
Sun high up in the lunar sky but not straight overhead (its altitude varied
from 69° to 82°). This created enough shadowing to define crater rims and
other topography crisply, unlike the shadow-free view that we see during a
full Moon. The combined image shows slight banding where the 1,024-pixel-wide
 swaths were stitched together.

A close-up of Rupes Recta (usually called the Straight Wall) from the new
LROC mosaic of the lunar nearside. Located near the eastern edge of Mare
Nubium, this steep-faced scarp is about 70 miles (114 km) long.
NASA / GSFC / Arizona State Univ.Weighing in at just 2 pounds (0.9 kg),
LROC's wide-angle camera is small enough to fit in your hand. It features an
aperture only 1.2 mm across and a focal length of just 6 mm (for
visible-light work). Yet from LRO's very low orbit, currently only 20 miles
(30 km) up, this mighty mite can pick out surface details as small as 250
feet (75 m). Click here to view the specifications for LROC's wide- and
 narrow-angle cameras.
The image looks dark because Robinson and his team have kept the Moon as it
really is: dark. On average, the lunar surface reflects only about 12% of the
sunlight that strikes it. So a full Moon really isn't dazzlingly bright — it
only looks that way to our eyes because of the contrast with the black sky
 around it.
If your computer's up to it, you can download the full half-gigabyte mosaic
 here.

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Cards - changing mass

2011-03-04 Thread actionshooting
I agree. I keep all the cards you guys send me when I purchase. I have been
thinking about doing my own card but it really is meaning less not being an
IMCA member or the original finder.

Maybe make an entry on the back of the original card as to whom you received
it from and forward it when you sell it.

 Hello Rob,

Great question. You should always provide your own card (even if the weight
changes). The idea is that if everyone did this, and passed original
dealer/collector cards along, you could establish a *chain-of-custody*.
Chain-of-custody is an important component of provenance. As pieces continue
to be sectioned down or change hands, provenance is more important than
ever. With the influx of new collectors, we all need to set higher standards
so that this precious information gets passed down.

 Hi Mike and List,

 Concerning Meteorite-Cards...

I like to have my stone-type meteorite slices sanded at one side and
 polished at the other.
After buying slices, they typically arrive as-cut. So I have to sand and
 polish them myself.

As you can guess, afterwards the mass doesn’t correspond to the mass on the
 cards anymore.
Assume I would choose to sell a slice. Should I stripe the original mass,
and put a new figure (plus my name?) on
the original card (as I would choose to do), or should I make my own new
card, or choose even a different option?

What would be the best choice? Wonder if we could work out a preferred
 approach here.

 All the best,
 Rob Lenssen

Macovich Auctions at Tucson...was it a decade ago? (Wow.)

I am all for transparency, but transparency can frequently result in

For me, it's precisely because this is not the same as eBay---this is a

we should be more sensitive to the messages being provided. Just a thought.

Now I know. This poor termite probably never saw it coming? RIP.

  Hello List,

Wow, what an outpouring of comments today.

Let me bring all of you up to speed on this.

Five years ago, I partnered with around 10 or so friends and they combined
some money, and I offered up some time and we started hunting for
meteorites together.  We choose to go to a certain location in Kansas where
pallasites had been found in the past.

We chose this location after I had my success locating some pallasite
  meteorites at the Brenham strewnfield.
We got land leases to hunt, without any promise of any big money, no talk
of Millions, or thousands or even hundreds of dollars to anyone.  We just
started hunting and we started finding meteorites.  Some of my friends, at
least 8 of us in the group, were very connected meteorite dealers and we
decided to try to sell some of our finds, we tried and we tried and we
tried, and we sold one meteorite.  We contacted virtually all the
institutions with notable meteorite collections and none of them wanted to
either buy or to trade for any of our specimens.  The one sale was made,
and the land owner from where this meteorite came from got his contracted
percentage royalty, and he was VERY pleased.  It was truly money from
  heaven for him.

The meteorites from this particular location have the reputation of being
the worst rusting meteorites known to man.  Far worse than Campo, Nantan,
Brenham or any other ruster one can think of.  So we could understand why
no one wanted to buy any more of this meteorite. It was just too big of a
  risk for people to take.

As we kept finding more and more meteorites, we were challenged with the
supply and demand issue.  Much supply, virtually no demand.  Not a good
  outlook.

Then one of the dealers in the group reminded us of the high quality
gemstones that had been faceted from the peridot in this meteorite.  So we
took the specimen in the worst condition out of our inventory and practiced
trying to free up some of the olivine that was in it, and sure enough,
there were some amazing gemstones produced.

A year and a half ago, we went to all the land owners where we had found
meteorites and told them that if we would liquidate all the meteorites we
found, we probably would only get $0.10 or $0.15 per gram.   But we felt
that as gemstones, we could make more money for everyone.

We decided to incorporate our partnership as Palladot Inc, a Kansas
corporation, that focused on selling meteorites, mostly in gemstone format.

I am the President, and Jason Phillips is our C.E.O..  We hired Charles
Ellias, who is a graduate gemologist with 25 years of experience in the
color gemstone market, to manage our operations, including overseeing the
faceting, grading and pricing and marketing of the gemstones.

Our original contract only promised the landowners that they would earn
their royalty on the wholesale sale of the meteorites.  We told all the
land owners we wanted to pursue the gemstone market as there was very
little demand in the meteorite world for the specimens as meteorites.  It
was one of the landowners that actually suggested pooling all of the
royalties together, so we wouldn't have to melt down every meteorite, and
this way all the landowners could still share proportionately by their
  contribution in the profits.

It was at that point, that in the spirit of full discloser, we explained
how the gemstone market gave us the best up-side potential for earnings. If
a market could be built for these most amazing and rare gemstones with a
fascinating story, then we would have the supply to fill the demand
created.   And yes, IF there would be millions of dollars of demand
created, we would have millions of dollars of gems.

All of the land owners, except for one, agreed to pool their royalty
interest together and join us in the gem market.
The one landowner that didn't want to go to the gem business with us, was
happy to take his portion in kind and we gave him his meteorites.  All
the others signed a new agreement that pooled their royalties together.

One year ago this month, we started selling Palldot Pallasitic Peridot
  gemstones at the

I was angry because the low flying event by military jets has happened to
   me
numerous times. They do low altitude runs in many areas of the desert
where
they should not be. But these flight jockeys love to spot some poor
bastard
in the middle of nowhere and then do a 'strafing run on him at 50 m off
the
deck and mach 1. Scares the Hell out of me and the sonic wave laden
with
dust is no fun. If I were to have a heart attack that be the time.

Ted was angry but Zann and I found it amusing.

I have been startled by sonic booms several times by unseen craft. You

I have seen what looked like an open grave discovered by Guido's wife,
Joan
and
Zann. There was a perfect rectangle dug several feet deep out in the
middle
of
nowhere. Perhaps some gangster dug it to make a point when Vegas was
under
mob
control. We continue to check it from time-to-time to make sure it
isn't
buried

over.

Caches of old casino chips have been stashed in secret places
throughout
the
desert. We were shown one location where tokens numbered in the
thousands
with
several rare ones. They were coming out of concrete, put there in an
unsuccessful effort to destroy them. It looked like fossil negatives
where
they

fell out.

A four hour hike from our house will take you to a very old aircraft
wreck. A
short hike will take you to petroglypts and a water fall.

I once found a dead turtle with a transmitter hooked to its back. This
was
while

hiking with Sonny and Rob.

We stumbled onto a hidden dwelling surrounded by bushes with no power
or
utilities and a sign that said keep the F--- OUT. We took it seriously
and
backed out of there slowly. We figured it was somebody growing product
or the
kind of lab that one would not want to deal with.

We found a stolen SUV hidden in a canyon and reported its GPS
coordinates
to
the

police.

One time, I was startled by a dog running up to me in the middle of
nowhere
with

six pack of beer strapped around its neck. I then met the toothless
owner who
told me not to be afraid because Buddy or Bud for short doesn't
bite
very
hard or all that often. He then drank one of the beers and offered me
one. I
think I was more afraid of the owner than the dog.

Why not just slice them up, flood the market with large slices to drive the
price down, that way we can ALL afford a huge slice, and give them their 25%??
If there are that many stones floating around would that not be an option??
That way people that have always wanted a nice big slice could afford one. I
have always been told it was better to make a fast nickel than a slow dime. I
am sure if the price was down around .25 to .50/gr people would be buying them
like crazy.

Unless there's some reason for Steve to hold on to it all even though

the farmers wouldn't necessarily be getting money for their rocks.
But since it doesn't look like they're getting any anyway, at least
they'd have less reason to think they'd been cheated, which is clearly

By Steve's own admission the money is tight.  Others are already competing

Who could blame them? The potential for fake stones is uncontrollable.
Everything on the planet is being faked today and when you can fake

I feel for this whole group because as I said before they are all good

started to find small pieces of a ceramic material. The material was
sand blasted and appeared to be very old. Still having no idea what the
material could be I soon found out. 75' from my location I could see
what looked like a leg. Two years
prior to this find while I was scouting for new areas I made a similar
discovery. It was a human leg with a shoe attached and a motorcycle
lying on the edge of the road with a women standing next to a
unconscious man. You can't imagine the thought that was going through
my mind at this time. Holy crap, miles from anywhere, no phone service,
an unconscious man lying on the shoulder of the road with his leg lying
20' away. My main thought was to check out the patient and notify the
local authorities. The man was in critical condition but still
breathing . The leg was a prosthetic limb that had fallen off during
the accident. To make a long story short , a large elk ran in front of
the motorcyclist and caused them to crash. 1 1/2 hours later he was
flown to a hospital in California.

Now back to my new find . It was an old prosthetic leg that was lying
next to a small sand dune . The leg had eroded out of the dune. As i
started to get the camera out to take a photograph Brix started to
investigate the object. I could just see Brix running off with the leg!
The leg appeared to be very old. I just wonder what is next, hopefully
no more legs! I hope to have a few picture up soon of my latest
 discovery.

Question #2 - Dealers based on what the market will bear and that gotta have

CC's also for their possible life connection.

Question #4 - I think most are extremely overpriced. They are unique and I

Angrite's value will increase if they are proven to be from Mercury.

The incident happened before 12:45 p.m. ET, according to witnesses who
called Fox 29. There are also reports on Twitter and Facebook about the
 incident.

Fox 29 TV reporter Chris O'Connell also saw the object, which he described

 near the airport.

A Fox 29 viewer spotted the object at 12:36 p.m. in Delaware.

There also have been several reports of similar occurrences today in
 Connecticut and New York.

Meteorites are naturally occurring objects that originate in space and
survive a fall through Earth's atmosphere. Most are remnants of asteroids or

The Navy Yard facility is on the Delaware River, which is also used as a

Michael, All,
I'd like to point out that the above articles do not shed any light on
the professional demeanor of our own Count (Robert Deiro). To quote
one of the articles:

Robert Deiro, who started the auction business in 1976 and sold it to
his son in 1991, is estranged from his son. He's embarrassed his name
is involved even though he isn't. This has really been hard on me,
the retiree said.

I'm sorry if this brings any unwanted/unpleasant things up, but I felt
that this should be clarified, as the published articles were very
misleading if the above lines were not pointed out.
Regards,
Jason

I owned and have operated some of the largest auction firms in the
nation since receiving my Certified Auctioneer Institute professional
designation from Indiana University in 1985. Prior to that, I attended
Missouri Auction School and served an apprenticeship at Sothebys in
New York. I became licensed in eight states. I was the Charter
President of the Nevada State Auctioneers Association. My firms have
sold, and I have gaveled down, over a billion dollars in real and
personal property, even some meteorites at this auction last year. I
have sold my auction interests to family members and have been of
counsel to our firms and other companies for the past 15 years.

So the qualifying remarks having been made…here we go:

SOME (NOT ALL) AUCTION POLICIES AND TECHNIQUES

Auctioneers have a legal fiduciary obligation to Consignors.

They should be knowledgeable of the items they sell and should be able
to pronounce names and make accurate descriptions.

An auctioneer has to know the retail value of every lot and have
examples to quote to the audience, so that he can open the bid at a
sum that encourages bidders to bid on the money. Opening a $500 item
at $20 is incompetence. Getting an opening bid that is off the
money...say $100 on a $500 item and then asking for $120 instead of
$200 is something you learn not to do the first day at auction school.

It is critical that auctioneers make the audience believe they know
what they are selling, and what it’s worth, so that bidders will have
confidence to bid what is being asked. Failing to answer legitimate
 questions from bidders ruins credibility.

Never say “I have $200”. Auctioneers don’t have anything. Better to
say “at $200”, or $200 is bid.”

Taking a bid from an opening bidder, and then acquiring another bid
and then not go immediately back to the opening bidder is insulting to
him. Work the first to bidders dry…then take a competing bid. Saves
time and respects the first bidders.

All auctioneers should employ trained ring persons. They are
invaluable in encouraging bidders, showing lots, and answering
questions like “where we at?” or “what’s the bid?”

It is not accepted practice for an auctioneer to bid on his own
behalf, even if he does not own the goods being sold. If he does, he
should never announce the fact, as it tends to discourage bidding and
 hurts his consignors and credibility.

He should have several house numbers to sell a passed lot to, or a lot
that didn’t meet an undisclosed reserve, or a lot he has bought.

Do not disclose reserves. Do not announce

 Good grief!
All this post-auction bickering reminds me of the old adage, No good deed
goes unpunished. I had a great time at the auction, in spite of not winning
a single item, and I appreciate the efforts of all those who make it happen.
I don't go expecting the tightly run ship of a world-class auction house,
but to have fun with friends in the meteorite community - some old, some
new, and some I've yet to meet.
Is everything perfect? Of course not! We're all human and we live on planet
Earth. But we should be celebrating our common interest, not quibbling over
petty problems. I can understand the differing points of view, but I don't
understand the point of complaining about it all. I assure you, we'll all
have bigger things on our minds on our deathbeds.
So hats off to Michael, Ruben, Leigh Anne, Suzanne, Lisa Marie, Twink, John,
and anyone else involved. We'll have even more fun next year!
