[meteorite-list] AD-Incredible new Lunar NWA 810, 900g Esquel and other auctions ending today

2014-10-26 Thread mail--- via Meteorite-list
Hello List:
I would like to introduce a new lunar meteorite - NWA 8010
The single 58g stone was found in 2013 near Zagora, Morocco. The
exterior had a grayish crust that was crossed by thick veins. Upon
cutting, the veins were vesiculated melt and closer examination revealed
glass spheres or Crystalline Lunar Spherules (CLS) in high abundance
relative to other lunar meteorites. CLS's were found in lunar regolith
collected by the Apollo missions.
Here is the abstract we published on NWA 8010:

http://www.hou.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2014/pdf/2823.pdf

This is a beautiful lunar meteorite!

All of the slices I have are on my site here:
http://www.mhmeteorites.com/main_collection.html

I also have many auctions ending today, including a 900g ESQUEL slice
with golden olivine.
I will gladly discuss deals through email and off of Ebay. Try me!

Here are the auctions..

[meteorite-list] AD- Two new lunar meteorites and one deal of an auction

2013-01-27 Thread mail
Ending today is a nice piece of Norton County with no reserve.
Currently at just over 10/g. The piece has a museum label and catalog
number.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=221181012827ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT

I also have two unpaired lunar meteorites to offer.

NWA 7493 - Lunar, feldspathic breccia
found 2011, Morocco

503 grams total weight
This is an unpaired, beautiful fragmental lunar breccia composed
primarily of quenched melt clasts and calcic plagioclase grains. There
are numerous scattered olivine and zoned pyroxene grains throughout,
rare grains of exsolved pigeonite, ilmenite, Ti-chromite, troilite,
silica polymorph and iron metal. Shock melt domains are common
containing plagioclase grains set in a matrix of quench crystals. Also
contains lunar granophyre clasts.

Two complete slices available here:
http://mhmeteorites.com/museum_gallery.html

I have a couple small slices but I don't have pics ready yet. Please
email for details.

NWA 7611 - Lunar, mingled breccia
Microprobe examination of a polished 7 × 2 cm sawn slice and a
separate polished mount shows a fragmental breccia of plagioclase,
pyroxene, and olivine grains in a wide range of grain sizes. A
prominent ~1-cm pyroxene-plagioclase gabbroic clast was observed as
well as several smaller gabbroic fragments. One small clast consists
of intergrown hedenbergite+fayalite+silica (after pyroxferroite). The
groundmass is variable with some domains showing a uniform
fine-grained subophitic plagioclase-pyroxene texture, while other
domains show densely packed mineral clasts ranging from 10-300 µm.
There are several sharp boundaries between the various textural
domains, with at least two compositionally distinct olivine
populations, and a wide range of pyroxene compositions, indicating
multiple lithologies of a mingled fragmental breccia. Accessory
ilmenite, silica polymorph, minor zircon, troilite, Ti-bearing
chromite, Ni-free iron metal and kamacite are present.

One HUGE slice available here: http://mhmeteorites.com/museum_gallery.html

I will be cutting my other slice down into smaller part slices.

Thanks,
Matt

Having a very hard time of it. Gary has now outlived the medical prediction
Of his demise by one month, is still very ill and they are facing severe
financial difficulties, including, but not limited to their mortgage.

Since I still don't have 100 items in the Auction, I decided to open
up to the auction to the list to have an opportunity for the following:

Place a NICE specimen in the auction FOR Gary Foote and his wife
And I will donate my consignor's commission and the full hammer price
Will go to Gary and his wife. I will begin, myself, with gifting a fine 198g
iron individual.

Your donation will include your initials in the lot # and your name
When I send Gary and CJ the funds - unless you request to be anonymous.
All donations will go onto a consignment sheet in the name of Gary Foote

Other consignor, but the consignment fee will be waived so the entire
Hammer price will be sent directly to them.

Donations need to have a good photo and description emailed to me
By WED. if at all possible, as that is the day I am hoping to reset the
Catalog in the order of lots. You must also bring it to the Tucson Auction
Between 5 and 6:30 or have someone bring it for you. Please, donations of
entries need to be at least in the $75 to$100 Hammer price range or up.
There are limited spaces, so, any lesser offers will be declined. I would
encourage you to put such items on eBay and send Jerry and CJ the profits
Of said sales. I will be happy to provide you their contact info off list.

While one could do the same with larger items I anticipate live
bidding will be far more generous knowing where the hammer price will
Be going and since everyone there will be of the meteorite community.

Gary and his wife both expressed profound gratitude to Jerry
Armstrong for donating a painting and to Patrick Herman who purchased it
And sent them a check directly and to all others who generously contributed
To them in their time of need. Gary has not been able and his wife has been
beside herself, so, no thank you notes went out, but they are grateful to
all individuals who contributed in the past from the bottoms of their heart.

Please act now and tomorrow and we can make a big difference in
their day to day struggle to eat and make the next mortgage payment.

Best wishes to all, Michael

Re: [meteorite-list] Dimmitt Main Mass?

2011-10-03 Thread mail
Thanks.
According to Dr. Ehlmann the largest single Dimmitt was 8.9 kg, followed by
3.74kg, 3.46kg, and 2.35kg. These were the pieces cataloged by the Glenn
Huss. I have a 6.7kg stone that may turn out to be a Dimmitt, sold by Monning
to a collector in the 50's. We will see.

Hi Matt and List,

Grady's COM lists the following large masses or quantities in collections -

TCU - 130kg

University of California - 6.644kg

University of New Mexico - 2.71kg

Max Planck Inst - 11.3kg

I'm not sure which of those are single masses and which represent a
total of pieces.

BTW - I agree about Dimmitt. It's one of the most interesting Texas
meteorites (that is commonly seen).

Best regards,

Hi Paul and List,

I would say yes and no.

Technically speaking, the material originated from the institutional
collection. But, the material has been cut/modified by the dealer, so
it is not in the original form that came from the institution.

Personally, as a seller, I would disclose up front that the material
originated from XXX collection, but has been cut down since then. I'd
provide a copy of the original specimen card or label, and a copy of
my own label. That way, a potential buyer can decide ahead of time if
they still want to purchase the specimen, and if they do, they will
have provenance from the original piece and the sliced/cut specimen
that came from it.

Best regards,

MikeG

Are either of the pieces, or both, considered to be ex Museum of Natural

http://www.nation.co.ke/News/Meteor+crashes+at+Kilimambogo/-/1056/1202250/-/13ulmhtz/-/

Posted Saturday, July 16 2011 at 17:34

An unknown mass believed to be from outer space on Saturday fell near
Kilimambogo and Tala towns.

Initially, there were reports of an explosion in Kangundo, Tala, Yatta
and Kakuzi before an extra-terrestrial rock fell at around 10 am.

Area residents say the loud sound was comparable to a bomb explosion
or a crashing aircraft while others felt it was an earthquake.

Police and military officers from Thika rushed to the scene at
Kiumwiri village, Murang’a county. The military later took away the
object for expert analysis.

The black smooth rock weighing about five kilos fell at a maize
plantation, 60 meters from a nearby homestead, but no one was harmed.

Lt Col J.N. Vungo, the commanding officer of the 12th Engineers
Battalion, said initial assessment indicate that the object was not
manmade and was believed to have come from outer space.

“We got conflicting reports from Kilimambogo area indicating that an
aircraft had crashed or a bomb had exploded in the area and jointly
with the police we mobilised our officers to find out what was
happening,” he said.

On locating the scene, security personnel sealed off the area, which
was attracting curious residents.

“We believe it is a heavenly body, probably a piece of a meteor that
may have disintegrated on entering the earth’s atmosphere,” said Lt
Col Vungo, who was accompanied by Thika police boss Paul Leting.

Mr Vungo said reports from Ndunyu Sabuk area indicated that a bigger
object was seen in the skies before it disintegrated after a loud
blast.

The official said according to witnesses, the object raised a cloud of
dust on hitting the ground, was extremely hot and was spinning on
impact.

“Meteors often lose stability and fly away from their orbit, but they
burn out on entering the atmosphere due to friction, Lt Col Vungo
said.

However, he added that it was a rare occurrence in the East African region.

An eye witness Ms Jane Wangui Kibugi said she was only 50 meters away
when the object fell.

“I saw a cloud of dust and when I went closer I found the black smooth
stone, which had dug a hole on the ground,” she said.

Great to have another new fall to ponder.

I don't think so, and most university professors couldn't identify a meteorite
if it hit them on the head. Can't tell you how many times I get calls saying
but the geology professor says this is a meteorite. Looks like this one is
bogus too. But these local papers LOVE printing stories like this.

Check out this article about a rock found in Greely Colorado. True? or
False?

http://www.greeleytribune.com/article/20110612/NEWS/706129976/1051ParentProfile=1001

Doesn't look like any meteorite I've ever seen, seems more like a schist or
something with a high crystalline content.

It pulls the Meteoritical Bulletin database into Google maps. The meteorites
are shown by a pushpin and colored by type. You can click on the pin and pull
up a brief description of the meteorite. You can also enter in your own
meteorite location and info. Pretty simple but neat if you are on the road and
want to see the nearest meteorites. No idea on the cost.

person that wants to try it will get it and let us all know if it is
 usefull.

 Hi Mr Meteorite!

We just finished up an iPhone app called Meteorite Hunter and would
like to provide you with a free copy.

 http://www.innerfence.com/howto/redeem-free-promo-code-for-iphone-app-from-iphone-or-itunes

Here is a brief description of the app:

Meteorite Hunter maps and displays all of the earth's known meteorite
and impact crater discoveries (non-Antarctic). Map annotations for
each event are added, and the location coordinates plus other
information is provided for each event. Simply click on an annotation
to bring up the name and exact location of each event. Click on the
detail disclosure button to bring up even more information about each
event, such as the discovery date, mass, the type of meteorite, etc.

Browse the world map and zoom in on strewn fields and impact craters
from around the world. Find the most fruitful meteorite hunting areas
near you. Add and track your own meteorite discoveries with automatic
location detection, and track your current location with respect to an
 area of interest.

Due to the many thousands of known discoveries, the map annotations
are grouped until the zoom level is such that the individual locations
can be shown. Impact craters are shown with purple annotations.
Meteorite discoveries that result from a witnessed fall are shown as
green, and discoveries where the fall was not witnessed are shown as
 red.

 Happy hunting!

 Hi List,

Thought I'd chime in on this subject since I'm in the auction industry.

Privacy (and anonymity) is one of the principles of the auction
industry. The consignor or direct previous owner is kept private
unless they wish to be recognized, at which point it is up to a
department's director whether or not to include them in the
description of an item. Well recognized provenance, such as from The
British Museum, or Nininger, would normally be shown in the
description while the direct previous owner or consignor will not be
 unless it is agreed upon.

Of course a potential buyer can certainly ask to be put in contact
with the previous owner, but it's up to the consignor whether or not
 they want to respond.

Also, a bill of sale from an auction house is usually really good for
authenticity and provenance since auction houses are supposed to
 guarentee the titles of items.

frustrating, especially from an auction house. One would think they would
live or die on provenance, especially for items that cost a bunch.

I have a question about the exceedingly rare meteorites in question.

Why does Bonhams devalue these meteorites by stripping them of their
 provenance

and chain of ownership history? Why are they being sold without the
 supporting

information of where they originated from? It does not seem to be in the
 best

 interest of the buyer

I agree Shawn...The first two do look lunar though...but not the ones
they say...and the last looks like the NWA Chassignite 2737!!!

I just looked through some others and I think several other of the
lunar slices are mixed up too.

They need to be told I think before they get circulated under the
wrong names or folks end up getting something different from the
photos when they bidnot good.

Perhaps someone on this list is auctioning them through Bonhams?

David,
Thanks for the excellent synopsis. We certainly do go off topic on this list
quiet often, but it is well thought out, reasoned and factual posts like yours
that make these excursions not so unwelcome.

I always find it interesting when complain about the highly manipulated and
subsidized oil industry. The drill here crowd always say that by tapping
resources here, the price of a gallon will come down. I always ask, Why is
that? The crude will be sold on the open market, to anyone in the world with
cash to buy it. There is zero evidence that the price will drop due to this new
production, after the many years it would take to bring on line, because there
is continuing and growing worldwide demand.

It is no secret that the oil industry is highly subsidized in the US by tax
breaks and a number of other benefits and gives backs We the People provide for
this industry. If these blatant subsidizes alone were removed and these
companies paid their fair share, the joke, smoke mirror political theater we
have going on in DC right now would be wiped out. So, we could have everything
being cut if the oil industry just paid their fair share.

What always goes unspoken is the fact that the US military protects oil assets
and transportation for most of the world, free of charge to both the industry
and other countries. The American taxpayer is happy to borrow against their
children's future to protect the price and supply of oil for the rest of you.
You are welcome. All we ask is you continue to buy our debt and not burn our
flag.

I recently heard a report that if all of the subsidies were removed from the
oil industry, including our military protection, the price per gallon here
would be more than $14. I suspect it would be much higher than that in Europe
because they would need to pay for protecting their own supplies, instead of
letting the United States do it.

On one last point, and very off topic even for this off topic post, The same
group blamed for the price of gas is also blamed for the death of nuclear power
here as well. Unfortunately that isn't true. The bankers are what has killed
NP, because they refuse to put money into it. There is just too much down side
for the investment. That's why nuclear power here requires large government
oversight and huge government funds to exist.

Big government and big spending is what is currently supporting both
industries. So much for the free market.

Cheers

private market is somehow damaging the science.

buyer wrote on a blog. “I’m surely a part of the problem.

This article is irresponsible and borderline yellow journalism from the NYT.
They should be ashamed for running such a biased and uninformed story. Well
over half of the article weighs on the disadvantages and more than infers a
possible damage to science which is not there.

It almost completely ignores the great good that's been accomplished through
private collecting/hunting/curating or meteorites and the contributions that
have been made by private collectors and hunters. It never mentions
donations to institutions, how much of a sample is needed to study any
meteorite, nor does it mention how many people it brings to the science.
There is one very good quote from Anne which states:

“The scientists do not have time to go hunt for their own meteorites, so
somebody has to do it for them,” said Anne M. Black, president of the
 collectors association. “It’s common sense.”

To the uninformed reader, and inexperienced meteorite collector the NYT
article looks very bad and creates an artificially biased view from those
not familiar with meteorites. It's purely political.

I think it should be an article for MHC Magazine. To make it FAIR for
everyone involved, I want ALL points of view, from all sides. From the
scientific world, and the private market, as well as the points from the
center. Anyone who would like the opportunity to tell the WHOLE story, who
cares to write a rebuttal for the NYT's blatantly biased article, send me

Just wondering why the Park Forest Main mass looks old and weathered
in the photograph?

Was it found much later. I was expecting to see fresh crust and
matrix. I would never have guessed it was Park Forest.

Thanks for the reply Mark,

An interesting story and explains the rust. I wonder where the main
mass of Park Forest resides at this moment then. Would be very
interesting to find out if he still has it or did indeed sell it to
someoneperhaps someone on this list?

On 27 March 2011 18:26, Mark Hammergren mhammerg...@yahoo.com wrote:
The Olympia Fields gentleman whose lawn this stone fell into returned to town
more than a week after the fall. When he got back, he saw a hole in his front
yard, along with a whole bunch of stone chips in his driveway. He assumed
the city parks department, which was maintaining a park nearby, had left this
mess on his property. So he swept up and threw away the stone chips (yes,
this is painful, I know!), and called the city to come repair his lawn.

The workers dug up the hole, found the meteorite, and recognized it for what
it was. Then, amazingly enough, they knocked on his door, gave it back to
him, told him they thought it was a meteorite and likely worth a lot of
money, and went on their way.

He called me a little while after that, said he thought he had a meteorite,
and wondered if I could verify that's what it was. I'd received hundreds of
such inquiries, with only a few of them proving to be meteorites, so I was
doubtful. But when he gave me his address, which was right at the high mass
end of the strewnfield, and described the stone, I had a suspicion his rock
might be the real thing. When I got a chance to examine it in person, it was
unmistakable. Quite rusted from spending two weeks in soggy sod, yes, but a
 genuine Park Forest meteorite.

I took some photos and weighed it, then took him and the stone down to the
Field Museum, where their meteorite collections manager (at the time)
examined it herself. I walked the gentleman back to his car, advised him that
while his meteorite was of significant scientific interest, it was also quite
valuable to collectors (museum ethics forbids me from giving specific
appraisals). I made sure he understood that since the meteorite fell on his
property, he legally owned the meteorite, and that no other public or private
organizations had a claim on it. He asked if I could recommend a meteorite
dealer, but museum ethics similarly forbid me from recommending a specific
dealer. I referred him to IMCA, and also said he could simply Google
meteorite dealer. He left, and I never heard any more from him.

If someone has subsequently dealt with the owner, and knows more about what
happened to the stone, I'd be interested in hearing about it.

 Best regards,
 Mark

That was my initial reaction as well.  I have never
 previously seen
the photos that Bill posted, and I was expecting velvety
 black crust

I'd be curious to hear more about the circumstances of it -

Re: [meteorite-list] OT: Solar Power

2011-03-17 Thread mail
As a geologist who has done some work for the solar industry, I can tell you it
isn't green or renewable. All the materials in a panel need to be mined or
manufactured, which leaves a footprint on the environment. Also solar panels
have a 20 year lifespan and cannot (yet) be recycled.

We just need to be realistic about alternative sources of energy and stop
calling them green or renewable. That is a complete misnomer.

I know people in Colorado that tried to live off the grid. You can, to a
point, but they have back up sources of power when the need that extra
electricity (usually in the form of generator power from diesel). Solar panels
are very inefficient, even worse than wind. In this day in age we need all the
sources we can get. At least the Japanese situation is getting the discussion
on the forefront.

I am interested in the people still poo-pooing solar power. It cracks me
up. Solar may not work well for Oregon, but in more than 50% of the USA, it
would solve most of our energy needs.
My house is now solar-powered. I have 38 panels, no battery, grid-tied
system, installed in December. My last two electric bills for Jan was $6.85
and for Feb was $7.50. Taxes you see, and line bills, I actually produced 20%
more than I used, so I have a credit for the coming hot months. Normal Jan
and Feb electric bills more than $80, so 90% drop.
Earning equivelent of 8%-9% on my investment, $50,000 increase in home value
but tax free, and clean. At night I buy my power back from the grid after
pumping in all day, my meter runs backwards all day, and Tucson has very few
 cloudy days.

Keep crying about how nice Nuclear is and how EVIL Solar is, people like me
laugh all the way to the bank. It works, oil and gas industry fighting it for
decades, but solar going up all over Tucson. One Nuclear plant also gets more
subsidies from the government than all solar power ever produced in this
country, so it is the ultimate coorporate welfare program the GOP loves to
 cry about.

Denmark and Holland have entire towns powered by a couple of wind turbines,
and they pay all taxes by selling their power into the grid, I guess they are
stupid people, they just don't know it.

We charge 50-60/hr usually, and that includes the $1500.00 for the 1 km of
wire. Our Diamond Wire Tech saw cuts pretty fast compared to the Well saw. It
is difficult to give you an exact cost since each meteorite is different. I
would estimate 1-2 hrs per slice and that takes into account the wire wear
after each cut.

Aloha Andre,

Depending on the cost of the material, it may or may not be more cost effective
to use a wire saw. A wire saw is better for planetaries or other expensive or
rare meteorites, where cost of material is high, and so minimizing cut loss is
imperative. If the material is cheap, then the expense of using a wire saw is
not justified for minimizing cut loss because you would spend more money on
cutting it than you would saving on reduced cut loss.

You have to balance the cost of cutting with expected cut loss .

For example, a friend cut a cheap CV3 on a wire, and cost him big money to do
so. He would have been better off taking the cut loss on a lap saw for a
cheaper cutting expense.

Re: [meteorite-list] wire saw cost

2011-03-10 Thread mail
The optimal wire thickness for cutting stony meteorites to produce the
straightest cuts and longest wire life is about 250 um (that includes the
diamond coating on the wire). This is from my own experience. I can cut with
150 um wire, if needed. I stopped cutting irons and pallasites on the wire saw
since it wasn't very cost effective for me or the customer. Plus they are a
total pain in the butt.

Hi List
I like to pay Your attention that diamnond wire saw is not best method for
irons. Much better idea how to cut irons (exclude pallasites) is EDM -
Electrical Discharge Machining
http://www.wireedm.com/wireedm.htm
http://www.mech.kuleuven.be/pp/research/edm
This can cut everything what conduct voltage, so graphite, iron or diamonds
:) I remember photo of Canyon Diablo badly cut around nano diamond rich
nodule, becouse it was impossible to cut using conventional methods. For EDM
it could be easy.
Also in diamond wire saw You can't use very thin wires for irons becouse it
will simply tear off very fast. Maybe Mr Morgan can tell what thickness he
usualy use for most irons vs stones? In EDM equipment I use wolfram wire
have 0.12mm thickness. In diamond wire saw u can't even think about this
thickness.

Diamond wire cutting is perrfect for stony meteorites or pallasites. But for
irons I want suggest EDM as a preffered method.
Ofcourse there is alvays one but...

What material You want to cut (how expensive and how big).
Becouse cutting 5kg Campo will be also expensive and take many hours of
cutting, and every hour cost. Anyway I dont see a sense of cutting campo not
matter why :D
In EDM You can very precise cut thick slice of historic iron into two
thinner slices or cut small (lets say up to 500g) irons all types.
There is also problem how to find good place to cut becouse this equipment
is much more expensive than diamond wire saw, so not everyone will like to
waste *expensive* time of his machine to cut strange piece of crap that some
freak bring to him.

Anyway from my personal experience, if I can choose cutting iron for free on
my diamond saw (not wire) or pay for EDM I choose ofcourse second option. I
have less cut loses not only from cutting , but also from grinding becouse
slices are much more flat than from typical diamond blade. Ofcourse diamond
wire saw will make same flat surface as EDM but for me is much more
expensive, something like 5x :) so calculations are simple.

Re: [meteorite-list] wire saw cost (Benefits of the wire overblade?)

We can cut a 6 x 6 x 18 piece with a 250 um wire. A skinny lap blade that
is 6, you can cut 3, maybe, if you don't use a rotisserie.
250 um is 0.009. On avg we lose 9 percent, but that depends on the depth of
cut, thickness of cut, wire diameter, material, etc. It definitely has
advantages over a lap saw. I have cut hundreds of meteorites over my 15+ years
and really like the wire saw for rare materials. Plus it is pretty easy to
mount an odd-shaped rock on the wire saw as compared to a vise on the lap saw,
wich can be VERY problematic.

Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] wire saw cost (Benefits of the wire over

Hi List,

Can someone tell me what the advantage of a diamond wire saw is, over
a conventional lap saw blade? I'm curious, because I have never used
a wire saw or seen one in operation.

I have seen slices made by a wire saw and they didn't look any
different (better or worse) than slices made with a blade. One minor
difference I did notice was the markings left on the unpolished
slices. Blades make distinctive arc-shaped saw marks on the
specimen, which must be polished out. The rough wire-cut slices that
I handled also had saw marks on them, but the marks were different in
depth and orientation. After polishing, I could see no difference.

So, is the advantage that the wire saw generates less loss? (if so,
compared to what?) Like I said in my previous post, cutting loss is
in direction relation to the size of the saw being used and the
thickness of the blade - assuming the cutter is skilled. A wire saw
might generate less waste in comparison to a 10 lap saw using a .040
blade, but I don't see how the wire saw can generate less waste than a
smaller lap saw using a blade that is the same thickness as the wire
used in a wire saw. All things being equal, shouldn't the amount of
loss be dependent almost solely on the thickness of the blade or wire
used?

I am guessing that the main advantage is cutting large specimens - a
large specimen requires a large lap saw and a large blade. If a
specimen can only be cut on a 10 or 12 lap saw, or a wire saw, then
the wire saw seems like a no-brainer. But for a smaller meteorite
that can be cut with a .012 blade (or .006), what is the advantage
of the wire saw? Can the wire saw make thinner slices?

I'm not knocking the wire saw, just trying to understand the
advantages over a conventional lap saw.

Best regards,

MikeG

[meteorite-list] Fw: wire saw cost (Benefits of the wire overblade?)

2011-03-10 Thread mail
Also the wire saw has industrial uses a lap saw couldn't handle. We have cut
big pure silicon blocks (6 tall) at 0.5mm thickness. Or how about a 5 x 12
block of spinel that costs 25,000, cut at 0.25mm thickness. A lap saw would
eat this material and send shards of glass everywhere. When companies need
thin slices with minimal loss they call on the wire saw.

I have a photo of a multi-wire saw we sometimes use on Kerfindustries.com (a
business of mine). The one we own is a single wire saw that costs about 65k
new.

Coolant can be either distilled water, distilled water with a surfactant (for
wire longevity), alcohol (yes!!), mineral oil, or compressed air (difficult).
The coolant is fed by a standard pond circulation pump into the saw and is
recycled.

Hi Matt,

Thanks for the explanation. Do you have a photo of the wire-saw
setup, or is there a photo of one somewhere on the web? I'm curious
to see what it looks like.

Being able to cut a large 6x6x18 specimen using a wire as thin as
.009 is a definite advantage over using a conventional lap saw that
is big enough to handle a specimen that large.

I am assuming the wire-saw also uses a coolant? Does it have a big
tank for the coolant or can you hook it up directly to a water source
like a tap?

Sorry for all the questions. It's late, I'm bored, and I'm curious. :)

Best regards,

Recently some of us had a discussion on Facebook about how rare Murchison
seems to be. Rarely do you see as much as a gram available.

The Heritage Auction has a huge Murchison, 535.9g individual

Maybe I've missed them, or not privy to their availability, but where is

 Anyone?

Hi Gang,

This is just my opinion, so others' mileage may vary.

I do not include specimen cards with the pieces I sell for one primary
reason, explained below.

1) I include a small identification label for each specimen that shows
the name of the specimen, type, location/date of the find/fall and my
URL.

2) I do not include the original specimen card (from the dealer I
acquired it from) unless it is specifically requested. If the buyer
requests it, I will provide a copy of the original card.

Personally, I do not find specimen cards to be a convincing method of
proving provenance because anyone with a printer can make a copy of
any specimen card they want. With a scanner, a person could copy any
specimen card in the world and insert whatever information they want
using Photoshop. To me, such cards are nice to have, but they prove
nothing. The same can be said for certificates of authenticity
which are not worth the paper they are printed on.

In my view, you either trust your dealer or you do not. A card or
certificate might make one feel better about provenance, but it
ultimately means or proves nothing.

Having said that, I enjoy specimen cards and I collect them. I have a
large box full of cards from dozens of different dealers and
collections. But I do not count them as proof that a given specimen
is genuine. I trust my sources for that authenticity, not the small
printed cards they give me.

Best regards and happy collecting!

I was told they respresent directions. So if you show the N, rotate the piece
180 you would then show the S, and so forth.

Dear List,

As I continue to restructure my collection in favor of old falls, I am
making many nice collection pieces available. There are pieces from
Nininger, Dupont, rare falls and finds, and some scarce irons. Some have
painted numbers and old labels. If you would like a list of material
available please reply privately, off-list. I'm working on it now and should
have it ready soon.

Part 2: The biweekly plug for eBay auctions:

http://shop.ebay.com/historic-meteorites/m.html

A mix of everything - Historic, martian, falls, rare finds, many pieces
sitting at 99 cents. There's also a nice pair of Monnig Kaffir's with
sequential numbers! The starting bid on those was my cost from the Cureton
Collection many years ago.

Thanks and have a great weekend!

Subject: [meteorite-list] Congratulations Todd Parker

 Hi List,

I would like to congratulate Todd Parker on his new Arizona chondrite
discovery. I had the pleasure of hunting with Todd Parker and Larry Atkins
recently in the Arizona desert. While Larry and I were sitting on a hill
taking a water break with Brix, Larry's phone rang with a very excited
Todd on the other end. We could see him down below us, so we quickly
rushed over to see what he had found. We saw a beautiful chondrite in
situ. Todd was recording his find and preparing to take a photograph when
Brix ran up and gave the meteorite a sniff and a lick. Todd was the first
one to see the meteorite and Brix was the first (and only) one to lick it!
: ) It is a 30-40 gram chondrite with fusion crust and visible metal
flakes on on the broken end. It looks like Lawrence may have another
meteorite to classify from Arizona. Congratulations Todd!

Re: [meteorite-list] Retail Auction Price Guides

2011-02-25 Thread mail
Hi Richard
Seems we just completely disagree. I won't reiterate my points again, but we
have survived in this hobby for several decades since the first large dealers
began without a price guide and survived quite well. If there is a place for a
guide then why hasn't one stuck over that time period? There have been several
attempts before Kevin, with no success. Again the collecting market can
determine the need for a guide.

Why not do your own pricing? Kevin admits he doesn't use auctions ad doesn't
know what the dealers SOLD items for. To me a guide like that is not useful.
REALIZED prices may be ok, but good luck getting those data from dealers.

Subject: [meteorite-list] Retail Auction Price Guides

Sorry for making another subject change on this Kevin Matt.

I have to argue directly against you one this one Matt.

Retail price guides and auction results have a very real and useful place in
any collectibles market, especially for a market as small and thin as the
meteorite market.

While I do not have Kevin's price guide, I certainly think it is something
useful. Auction results are a very important tool too.

Nearly everyone on this list who spoke up not too long ago when asked about
interests other than meteorites said they collect some thing or other. Many of
these collectors collected coins and notes, numisma. Since this is the first
collecting bug tat bit me too, I'll discuss this market in those terms.

Coins, tokens, notes, etc is a huge market, but value is assigned by the
numerous points already raised and more, but are always dictated by supply and
demand. Many relatively common coins are very valuable because so many
collectors desire them while vast areas of numismatics, which are rather
esoteric, may only have a few hundred of even just one or a few collectors
worldwide. That is a type of market the we find ourselves in.

I've had a number of you with customer lists privately estimate for me the
worldwide number of active meteorite collectors and the consensus seems to be
well under 1000. Many estimate the number to be around 500. Double or maybe
triple that and you have the total number of active and sporadic collectors.
Adam Hupe often points out how rare meteorites are and that is very true. The
flip side of that is the meteorite collector base is minuscule. Just in those
small areas of numismatics many insanely rare, beautiful and interesting items
go for pennies.

The money collector community and market is literally thousands of years old
and has a huge worldwide collector base. There are price guides to be found
that include highly esoteric topics with no concern about new collectors being
confused by retail versus wholesale. The pricing methodology is outlined and
the collector is urged to learn as much as they can about the material and
pricing. Same as meteorites no?

When I started seriously collecting meteorites a few years ago, I already had
some information about meteorites and vast experience as a collector, so the
first order of things for me was 1, determine which direction I wanted my
collecting to go. 2, determine which dealers were trustworthy and 3, how much
do I pay? 1 2 were easy but #3 was more difficult. I wish I knew of Kevin's
guide back then. It would have saved me some time and effort.

For me I'd like to see a few more guides, not less. I bet Michael could turn a
very nice profit if he sold PDF books of all the auction lots and prices
realized from this year and at all of his previous auctions too. I know I'd buy
a copy.

Cheers

 Hi Kevin and list:
Kevin, while I appreciate what you are doing and applaud
you for putting together a detailed and extensive list, I
will just say that I think any price guides in any field are
problematic.  All collectibles are worth only what one
is willing to pay.  Coinage may be a different
situation since there is underlying value in the metal
commodity and there are fairly accurate mintage numbers.

A good example are home values.  An owner can ask 500k
for their home but only realize 300k in today's
market.  Zillow.com is a great example of how a
price guide should work; they show the recently sold price
not asking prices (as you do in your guide).  If one
