those two locations are only 30 miles apart... on the same day... can they
really be separate falls?

I would suggest the Handbook of Iron Meteorites.

Here is a PDF but don't know if they have the graphics in it.

Does anyone know a book or article that graphically illustrates with

Hi Rob,

I made my (and my wife's) wedding rings from Gibeon. We have no rust issues
at all. I had an experience with a Gibeon ring where it turned the skin

I made the wedding rings I "lined" them with gold. It worked and I have
never had any skin reactions from my ring.

Re: [meteorite-list] Question about Norites - Lunar and Diogenite

2015-01-09 Thread Carl Agee via Meteorite-list
Hi Mike:

Norite is a generic petrologic term for an igneous mafic rock that has
primarily orthopyroxene + plagioclase and little or no clinopyroxene.
Norites occur on Earth, the Moon, and the HED parent body (as you call
Vestan). HED norites are in fact a type of diogenite. Geochemically
there is no way you can confuse a HED norite with a lunar norite. For
one thing they have totally different Fe/Mn, and of course the oxygen
isotopes are totally different.

Hope this helps.

Hi Mike and List,

NWA 773 (and all of its pairings, including my NWA 7007) can be seen on
Randy Korotev's lunar meteorite web site. This clan of lunaites is far more
complex than originally thought before all of the [launch-paired] meteorites
were discovered... http://meteorites.wustl.edu/lunar/stones/nwa0773.htm

There are quite a few abstracts published on these, especially a lot of work
performed on NWA 7007 at Washington University in St. Louis... For example:

Hi List,

I was looking at Norites recently, and I came across the only
lunar-origin Norite, the lunaite NWA 773. I had no knowledge of NWA
773 prior to stumbling across it's Noritic connection.

The visual similarities between lunar norite and Vestan norite are
apparent. I am assuming the major differences are noted in chemistry.
Do lunar and Vestan norites share any other characteristics that might
blur the line between their respective parent bodies? In other words,
are these two types of norites so closely related that their may be
some room for reconsideration when it comes to their parent body
origins? (i.e., possible they came from the same body, or a noritic
body impact on the parent, etc)

Best regards,

MikeG

Re: [meteorite-list] Question about the chemistry of the Martian atmosphere and Martian meteorites

2014-03-01 Thread Carl Agee
MikeG,

Really good question! When you look at the data there are actually
few, if any, martian meteorites that are a perfect match for noble gas
isotopes of Viking. They tend to be a mixture of Viking and Earth
atmosphere, and there are spallation effects for Ar-isotopes. It has
been proposed that ALH 84001 contains ancient martian atmosphere that
is different from Viking, especially for Xe. However NWA 7034, which
is also ancient (albeit a breccia), has some of the most Viking-like
noble gas values. This is not my field so I am treading on thin ice
perhaps, but I would say that the picture is still not clear and Earth
contamination is always a factor. Also, it is possible that some of
the atmospheric gases were implanted at the time of impact that
launched the material off Mars (i.e. recent).

2014-01-18 Thread Ruben Garcia
Hi Steve,

I think you may have a point. However, in this case Michael is correct.

This is what happens when you're heading out the door for Tucson to
hand deliver meteorites and decide to quickly list some specimens on
eBay by using an old listing. It's usually done very quickly and can
be a great time saver - simply click on sell similar- and just change
the photos and the weight. In this case I didn't proof read the ad.

I just returned home and corrected the problem.

Re: [meteorite-list] Question about Impact Glass from Crooked Creek

2013-10-03 Thread b1dunovant
Hello Robert,

Again, thank you for your reply and incormation regarding Crooked
Creek.

I initially thought it was slag as well as it didn't fit with the
materials I
had found and documemted at the site, but then I recovered a large
specimen of
the same glass however it was transitioning from rock which has a
quench-like
texture. A couple days later I recovered additional material that had
many of
the same characteristics as the specimem in question, yet was stone had
floating
clast of the same material the glass transitioned from on the large
specimen.

I do not claim to know what this material beyond previous experience
and visual
correlation,  but the large piece is quite an enigma as it has
characteristics
of a couple different specimens that are obviously stone and vise versa.

I appreciate you responding to my question and hope that  we can
continue this
dialog.

My Best,

Brandon D.

I have encountered this material during field work.  I have a sample in
a box here beside my desk, along with a thin section.  My sample was
dominantly iron, with less glass and less bubbles, but looks pretty
clearly to be the same thing.  I did some research on it a couple of
years ago.  The metal portion has no nickel content, and the silicate
(glassy) portion is complex in composition, inconsistent with melting
of the local carbonates, chert, or quartz arenite sandstones that are
found in the brecciated or uplifted Crooked Creek rock units.  I
believe it to be slag from local mining of iron (about 100 years
ago) within the crater and throughout the region.  The mined iron is
not associated with the meteorite impact.  It was emplaced along faults
in the region by mineralizing hydrothermal activity, tens of millions
of years later, that occurred during the Ouachita Orogeny.  They also
mined for barite and several other things along faults
in and around there.  I found evidence for the timing and origin of
mineralization associated with the mines recorded in some earlier work
by a different author (I think it might have been Hendriks, 1954.)  I
included more details in a published abstract, though I don't recall
how much.  Sorry... it was disappointing for me as well.
Best regards,
Robert Beauford

Good Day/Night Fellow Listees.

It's been some time since I have had a chance to get on the list and
also present some new material to the collectors and researchers
interested. I have had to deal with some serious personal family issues
and this has weighted heavy on me as of late.

Today I would like to get the word out that I have some new impact
material of such quality that it should excite those who share my
common interest and attention. It is not just the size, but also the
scarcity.

To some up what I have I am just going to list what I have below.
Further specimens will be added over the course of the day so stay
tuned as well!

http://www.ebay.com/usr/meteor-rite

1) 469.2g endcut of full impact melt from the Crooked Creek, Missouri
impact.

2) 39.5g Rare slice of possible impact or landslide melt in Kofels,
Australia.

3) 1,123g corner cut of impact breccia from the Crooked Creek, Missouri
impact.

4) 868.2g Huge slice of impact. Melt breccia from the Glover Bluff,
Wisconsin impact site.

5) 441.7g. beautiful corner cut of the yellow type impact breccia from
the Glover Bluff, Wisconsin impact site.

I also have a piece of Meteorite art in the form of a Zoomorphic Campo
that has been painted by an artist with oil paint. It was shaped and is
now presented beautifully as a colorful chameleon. It was displayed in
a display at a museum for some time and includes documentation from
them as well as the artist.

Again, my eBay listings can be viewed by following the below link.

Hi Don/list,

I have a few of these booklets in different colours and i asked the
question to Mike Jensen a while ago. Below is his reply:

"Those are available in several different colors. I seem to find the
bright orange? color the most. But I have seen a more red cover and
one closer to the 1969 yellow? color as well. So yes they are
produced in several different colors. I always thought the blue ones
were the rarest color but I have actually seen several of them
recently. I also must point out I have seen so few of them over the
years that my opinions are based on a very small population so I could
easily be wrong when I state rarest...most...fewest...etc.
Something I find curious is only the 42 seems to have been produced in
several different colors. I do have one later edition that has a very
light yellow cover but every other book I have seen is the 69 yellow
cover"

So it appears that the 1969 edition has the yellow cover and you may
be able to date them according to the colour of the cover. Nice little
booklets :-)

Cheers

Martin

Hi Bernd, Don and list,

Upon checking the three copies i have, the orange and blue coloured
copies are from 1942 and the copyright is just shown as copyright H H
Nininger 1942. The later 1969 yellow edition is marked as Bernd
describes.

Hope that helps.

I have a puzzelment on one of my UNWA's.
There are a number of yellow very shiney blebs in a dark brown matrix. Two

If they were copper, they would have tarnished. I don't think brass is

Do supernovas produce elements much higher than iron?

Re: [meteorite-list] Question 1 & 2

2012-05-27 Thread Sterling K. Webb

Pete, List

The Moon BOTH revolves AND rotates
One revolution for each rotation; one rotation
for each revolution. Synchronous, it's called.

The Moon's tides slow the Earth's axial rotation,
making the day longer. In the past the day was
shorter and the number of days per year was greater

Because the angular momentum of the Earth-Moon
system must be conserved, the loss of energy from
the Earth's rotation is "pumped" into the Moon's
orbit causing the Moon to orbit at a greater distance.

The Moon slowly recedes from the Earth and is
doing so today. It will continue getting further and
further away until the Earth either loses the Moon
or the Sun eats us both in about five billion years.

How fast the Earth rotated when the Moon formed
is guesswork (with lots of equations thrown in).
6 hours? 12 hours? How close did the Moon form?
Nobody knows, but outside the Roche Limit (about
three Earth radii) or it would have broken up from
the Earth tides.

You shoulda oughta read that Meteorite List:
http://www.mail-archive.com/meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com/msg106159.html
"The Moon DOES rotate on its axis. If it didn't,
we on the Earth would have a slow month-long
changing view of every spot on the Moon. There
would be no "near" side and "far" side. If you were
looking at what we call the near side tonight, in
two weeks you would be looking at the "far" side."

# 1 Does anyone have the link to the GIF file that showed
the ISS assembly from start to finish?

# 2 I got the mistake I made clear in my 2 brain cells.
The moon does one revolution every month, always presenting
the same side to the earth. How long since it stopped
it's rotation.
Do the science eggheads have any idea how fast it rotated
after it was formed? Also, how fast did the earth spin at that
time?
Did the moon's tidal effect on the earth cause the earth's
spin to slow?
Thanks,

2011-11-06 Thread James Baxter
Hi Melanie,

I was lucky enough to get a dinner plate sized 895 gram slice of NWA 869 from
Blaine Reed back in 2008. I asked him and the mass he cut to produce it weighed
84 pounds, just short of 40kg. Not sure if anyone out there knows of a larger
one. The Metoritical Bulletin just says individual masses to >20kg.

Re: [meteorite-list] Question about NWA 869

2011-11-04 Thread MexicoDoug
Just saw Zelimir's informative post from yesterday, if that is what he
does for 869, he must have the world's best megadocumebnted collection
;-), like we all aspire.

I need a correction to what I just posted a few minutes ago:

I gave the amount lost to ablation in the prior post, the correct
numbers for the amount dropped as meteorites are as follws and Dean
Bessey's estimate for NWA 869 of 7 tons of rocks in the strewn field
and fits just right for the diameters/radii given in the paper and by
John,

diameter (meters)max recoverable mass
0.1 0.14kg
0.3 3.8
0.5 18
1.0 141
1.5 477
2.0 1.1ton
2.5 2.2
3.0 3.8
3.5 6.1
4.0 9.0
4.5 13
5.0 18

Nice to keep these numbers in mind when we think about our well cared
for boxes of space chocolates! If NWA 869 were a limited fall the
prices would have sent it right back to the cosmos ... something to
think about. Nice to think about next time you see your
wife/husband/boy/girlfriend!

Best
Doug

Yes Mel, John's 4-5 meters in diameter statement corresponds to the
average 2 meter radius in the reference. FYI, a typical entering
meteoroid that experiences a loss of 92.5% (the factor of its material
ton ablation as concluded by the authors) would drop this much material
for our collections:

diameter (meters)max recoverable mass
0.12 kg
0.350
0.5 200
1.0 1.7 ton
1.5 5.9
2.014
2.527
3.047
3.575
4.0 112
4.5 159
5.0 218

Of course the factor of 92.5% loss will vary depending on the angle it
enters, speed, composition and integrity, as well as the initial size
and shape, so they are all gross estimates.

Kindest wishes

NWA 869 represents an L chondritic regolith breccia containing
preirradiated components.  The meteoroid had an initial radius of about
2 m with a mass of about 110 metric tons. The transit time to Earth was
about 4-5 Ma. Large variations of shielding depths between samples
indicate that break-up of the meteoroid must have occured high in
atmosphere. This would also explain the large inferred ablation loss,
which is typical for large chondrite showers.

Re: [meteorite-list] Question about NWA 869

2011-11-04 Thread Zelimir . Gabelica

Hi Melanie, Doug, list,

Doug, your reference is very appropriate.

In cataloging my collection, in some specific cases, when I feel the
meteorite I am describing is important, I use to add a short
introduction summarizing its historical and scientific background.

Here is my write-up for NWA 869, hoping it be of help to Melanie:

--

NWA 869 (Algeria, L3-6 rbr)(S3W1), found 2000, tkw: many++@7+ tons.

History and scientific significance.

It appears quite clear that meteorite collectors in Northwest Africa
have discovered a large L chondrite strewnfield at an undisclosed
location, most probably around Tindouf, Algeria. Thousands of stones
has been sold under the name NWA 869 in the market places of Morocco
and around the world, totaling about 7+ metric tons (April 2008,
confirmed by J. Kashuba in: “Meteorite Times, Micro Visions”, March
2010), thereby making it one of the largest tkw’s to come out of NWA.

The corresponding meteorid was supposed weighing about 110 tons (4+m
in diameter), suggesting important ablation and fragmentation (Metzler
et al., LPS, 2008; Welten et al., LPS Conf. abstract, 2010, pp 2611).

Individual masses are known to range from <1 g to >20 kg.

This meteorite was classified a number of times by different
institutions (e.g. L4, that became later L5 –UCLA, also L3.9-6 or L6…
brecciated or not), before the above final classification by A. Rubin.

It is certain that NWA 869 is paired with other NWA meteorites
although no systematic survey has been done.
Among many examples cited are NWA 787, NWA 900, SAH 02500 (“Wadi
Mellene”), possibly also “AC-001”(see the 2 samples named “NWA-aaa”
below still under investigation since its find in 2000) and likely
many, many more.
One other famous example is NWA 904 (L5 br, also S3 W1), of which the
numerous pics reported in MetBull database are strangely similar to
those of NWA 869, further confirming the similarity of the samples of
both meteorites in this collection .

It is also possible that some stones sold as NWA 869 are not part of
the same fall, although dealers are confident that most of the known
masses are sufficiently distinctive from other NWA meteorites in terms
of surface and internal appearance, so that the error rate should be
fairly low.

Although the source of the NWA 869 samples of this collection is
reliable (purchase by "MV" in a Moroccan “selected reliable place”
where it has been confirmed that the origin is Algeria, just as for
NWA 904 (MV, personal communication), it is suggested (MetBull) that
scientists are advised to confirm the classification of any specimens
they obtain before publishing results under this name.

Much info was published regarding the composition of that strange and
very attractive meteorite.
When cut and polished, the matrix is full of color and chondrules of
all size, some armored. Literature reports 74% gray matrix, 20% light
tan (oxide staining) texture (type 5/6 clasts), 4% shock-darkened
sulfide-impregnated matrix, 1% type 3 clasts, <1% achondritic textured
clasts.
J. Kashuba (Met. Times, 03/ 2010) suggests it being a regolith
(coarse) breccia (asteroid soil) with chunks > 5.5 cm (Kashuba’s
picture in above reference; see also the extraordinary dual lithology
of the 27.30 g sample described below), also containing rare foreign
carbonaceous fragments.
Some pieces also display large metal grains and significant troilite
domains (35.42 g sample below).

The terrestrial age (4.4 ± 0.7 ky) is consistent with the low degree
of weathering, W1.
Since the abundance of regolith breccias among L-chondrites is only
~3% [Welten et al., 2010)], NWA 869 represents a rather unique and
large sample of the lithified regolith of the L-chondrite parent
body

Earth was about 4-5 Ma. Large variations of shielding depths between
samples indicate that break-up of the meteoroid must have occured
high in atmosphere. This would also explain the large inferred
ablation loss, which is typical for large chondrite showers.

Stone #1 is a midway classification between conglomerate and breccia
as technically the clasts in it are slighly rounded and not totally
angular. Conglomerates have fully rounded pebbles within. On the
moon there are no streams to round out the pebbles so we may safelty
conclude this is not a meteorite

Stone #2 in spite of what the others said, has possibilities. Please
send me more photos, in good focus and with a ruler included so I can
estimate scale. Let me know if it has any attraction to a magnet,
please.

I'll give it a good look

Re: [meteorite-list] question

2011-09-15 Thread Richard Montgomery

Hello List,
I also have a few large-surface/weight specimens from lucyfi90 and I'm quite
pleased with the prep work. A while ago there was some discussion regarding
her non-disclosure of weight, which I do not find deterent.

With that said, I've weighed a few from her because of simple curiousity,
and of course the $/gr was quite higher than usual (one specimen is a
stellar NWA801)...and yet the presentation justifies the price every time.

Sometimes I collect "outside the box"these are the ones I won't sell!

I have dealt with lucyfi90 before. She has some really rare stuff. Her
slices are big and gorgeous but they are also very thin(at least mine
was).
I would consider her an honest & trustworthy seller. She shipped my
piece from within the USA, and it was shipped rather quickly.
But I think she had a bad incident with the postal service mangling
one of her shipments once before, so now she ships piece(s) in what
amounts to an insulated small wooden crate inside a box!(again, at
least that's was what I got), the best packaging job ever!
Which is good because we are talking about very thin slices here. I
received mine in perfect condition.
She is also very easy to communicate with. I would recommend her.

2011-09-15 Thread Brandon
I just purchased an endcut of Dhofar 485(How) from her and am very excited to
get an upclose look at it! Beautiful stone and the first time I've purchased a
meteorite without knowing the weight, but the surface area justifies it for me
since it will be in a membrane box anyway. A paper thin endcut now this I have
to see!

Thanks, Michael, Benjamin! The I suppose it was up to $750/g for the
Lunar, pushing it to the limit of the material then. Still a great
deal for a relatively small amount and such a large surface area,
probably 50% more than others. By looking at the shadow on the graph
paper I guess you can get a better idea of how thin they are.. In some
cases though, it is desireable for for passing light through inclusions
in specimens to get such a nice uniform slice and hopefully this seller
can concentrate their talents there which will return the maximum value
for the community, IMO, instead of setting up $/g buyers for a hard
lession ;-)

Much simpler yet,
Ask that customer to go to his bank and send a wire transfer to your bank.
He will need your Bank account number and routing number (it is right on
your checks), and your Bank's "Swift Code". Call your bank and they will
give

you that information.
Usually it takes 2 to 4 days depending on the banks themselves, and when
the money is in your bank there is no further problems, he can't take it
back,

you can send the stuff. And he will be the one paying the transfer fee.

And just in case you worry about giving your banking information to a
stranger, you can open a separate account with a minimum amount in it,
just for

wire transfers.

Speaking of Kentucky, at 5:41 AM August 7 there was an exceptionally
bright bolide witnessed by me
just south of Louisville, to the north at 20 degrees NNW. I thought, that
might just have been barely bright enough to produce a
small meteorite. At a truck stop, I asked if anyone else had seen it, hoping
to note in which direction from their locations so that I could get a
triangulation and zip to that neighborhood for a look-see.
But people don't look up much anymore I guess; no bites. So I continued back
to Ohio.
Anyway, to the financial thread on the table, suppose I deposit a foreign
check. Regardless of the stupid hold-em games banks play, how long
is it before I can be reallt really really sure the check really really really
cleared? We are talking about objective reality, not bankspeak.

If he has a bank account, why don't you ask him to sign up with
paypal?, they say it's free to send from there and charge a 2.5%

Hi List,

Quick question for the dealers : have you ever heard of a US bank
accepting a check from an overseas bank? Specifically, a check from
India from an Indian bank that is affiliated with Bank of America, and
the check in question will be drawn against Bank of America and can be
deposited or cashed at any Bank of America?

I ask because I received a request from an overseas customer and the
request seems legit in other respects, but I am reluctant to deal with
the kind of stuff where I have to walk in to the bank, speak to a
supervisor and get it handled - it's a PITA and I'd rather just go
through the drive-through and get my business done quick. And unless
this is some form of Cashier's Check, there is no telling how long it
will take for a check like this to clear and the funds to become
available.

Best regards,

MikeG

It can be done, but watch out. In Kentucky, they can hold the funds for 90
days (and will blame everyone else for it) while they use YOUR money for
themselves.

I am sure other states have similar laws which allow theft like this.

Unfortunately there's a dozen sites like this, so whenever you an
internet search for a meteorite they pop up if the meteorite happens
to be on ebay.

The reason they do this is because ebay has a referral program, so if
someone clicks on an auction link on one of these sites and wins the
ebay auction, the site owner gets a commission.

Not really a way to fight this if the site owner is well hidden,
unless you have the money to hire lawyers to pursue it.

Subject: [meteorite-list] Question meteoritesaler.com

I tried to contact them but there contact link is not valid. Does anybody
know

how to contact the person(s) that run this website:

http://meteoritesaler.com

They have been publishing copyrighted material and some of the closing
auction
prices are inaccurately and ridiculously low. I had a customer thinking
I was
asking too much, even when offering an item way below wholesale because
of this
website. It is hard enough to break even these days and I don't need a
site

publishing inaccurate auction results.

Re: [meteorite-list] Question meteoritesaler.com

2011-07-14 Thread Galactic Stone & Ironworks
Hi Adam,

This looks one of those rapidly thrown-together Wordpress sites. It's
probably not even monitored by a real person. They probably have bots
scanning the web for meteorite tags and reading RSS feeds of websites
to get their prices. This doesn't explain why the prices are wrong,
but the site smells of contrivance to me.

Their network Who-Is info has been cloaked. I would wager that the
same person(s) probably have a dozen or more sites like this that are
geared towards different types of collectibles or auctions.

It is aggravating to see sites like this poaching copyright material
and damaging the market by misquoting prices.

My advice - file a complaint with their webhosting company about
improper use of copyrighted material. A reputable hosting site will
pull the site down for a TOS violation.

The DNS servers are "mediatemple.net" and the domain name was
purchased through "namecheap.com"

I can't readily tell who the host is though.

Best regards,

MikeG

Re: [meteorite-list] question eBay meteorite sellers?????

2011-06-07 Thread Greg Hupé

Hi Shawn and List,

The last time I listed anything on eBay was last Friday and I did see the
option, maybe it was just removed in the last few days, or a temporary
'glitch'??

I have a different issue with eBay but I understand why they do not allow
it, more fees in their pockets. The issue is that when I want to offer a
Met-List or IMCA Member discount on an item that has been purchased on eBay
from me, eBay will not allow you to issue a discount on the invoice, I have
to wait until full payment is made and then issue a partial refund in PayPal
(or personal check), when using PayPal you can issue a partial refund on
their payment, but can not include the eBay auction number or else you get
an error message stating you can not, 'treat your customers with a
discount'. Oh well, eBay can keep their fees, I am happy to offer discounts
to my valued friends and customers!!

Best Regards,
Greg

Hello Listers,

I have a question and was wondering any of you eBay meteorite sellers might
be experiencing the same problem on eBay.

The question

When you post an auction you have the option to list in the UK market for a
small fee in the check out section of the auction. But in the past week this
option is gone. This has happened once before and was a glitch on the UK
side is this a glitch again or is this option gone for good? Please let me
know cause the eBay staff are need I say more lol.

The sample described in the McSween paper is Bench Crater. There are
also a few iron fragments that are probably iron meteorites, but they
have not been officially designated. There are probably additional
small meteorites waiting to be discovered.

Is this a third meteorite fragment, distinct from Hadley Rille and

Re: [meteorite-list] QUESTION- Al Mahbas

2011-05-08 Thread Michael Farmer
I submitted the Al Mahbas pallasite to Ted Bunch many years ago, like so many
other meteorites that I submitted type specimens for, it vanished. I went to
the strewn field and found pieces myself, there is a story about it on my
website. It came out later under several different nwa numbers. should be
called al mahbas as I confirmed the location by finding pieces myself before
being chased away by Algerian border guards.
Sadly a nice and very rare pallasite was dumped into the nwa batch names.

Hi John,

Not quite sure what you mean... if the question is, 'less than 15 degrees apart
in the sky, as observed from earth', then the answer is yes - every new moon.
In some cases the angle is essentially zero - whenever there's a solar eclipse.

Norm, I prefer the asking price be left--we understand that some deals are
made
to special clients but the world need not know the specifics that is why we
call
it an asking price. I think that is a good compromise between removing it
immediately and leaving it up for the time you have a particular meteorite in
inventory. Future resale is in most --but not all cases more than a week from
purchase to resale. I can't see how the asking price being listed on the
website would influence a short term sale anyway.

Re: [meteorite-list] Question for dealers re: displaying sold items

2011-04-12 Thread Norm Lehrman
All,

This is an interesting question with important nuances.  I am one that does
leave many sold items pictured (but I do endeavor to marke them "sold" ASAP).

Here's why I do it:  The items we sell, each and every one of them, are
unique.
It is not like listing a particular stock item that was mass produced.  We do
have categories and types and sub-types, but in the end, a whole long list of
individuals.  As a consequence, every specimen has a unique value.  One
displays
this feature supremely well, another presents other aspects well.  One glorious
piece has it all.  I leave pictures of sold items on the website to help
collectors to develop a sense of perspective.  How can you recognize a truly
superb Besednice moldavite if you don't have some frame of reference for the
range of attributes possible?

So that is my "why".  But there is another question that has not been mentioned
thus far, and I would appreciate your thoughts on this.  For a long time, when
I
was updating a "sold" item, I left the asking price visible.  The thought, in
line with the preceeding paragraph, was to help provide perspective as to what
other "willing buyers" had accepted as a fair price for a piece of a particular
quality.

However, I also recognize that the day comes when a buyer may wish to resell,
and at that point, the price they paid for the piece should be a private
matter.  In fact, some buyers may not want their significant others finding out
the buying price for that great specimen they just bought instead of paying the
rent!   So, I increasingly do remove the purchase price when I mark something
"sold" (but I hope that potential buyers may be able to infer from my long
listing of "sold" items that many collectors have judged my pricing
reasonable---).  Do you want the purchase price deleted or do you find value in
being able to see what was actually paid for a specimen?

Periodically, I do go through our listings and weed out most of the sold items,
leaving only a selection of some of the best of the best "sold" items still
pictured.  But for those of you who don't maintain your own websites, it is
worth noting that this involves identifying the particular thumbnail photo that
links to particular blow-up, then deleting those images and changing the
associated page to delete references to those images, etc, etc.  Frankly, there
comes a point where it is easier to just leave it all there.  Lazy is part of
the answer to the original question---

Cheers,
Norm  (http://tektitesource.com)

Hi List,

Martin and Shawn raised a couple of good points.  Old-school
collectors bought specimens via snail mail and telephone calls,
sometimes without seeing a photo of a specimen.  Some dealers like Bob
Haag had catalogues with photos and descriptions, but many had simple
price lists with nothing more than a line or two describing the
specimen.  Today, we have instant gratification and can shop online
for meteorites as if we are buying shoes or a hat.  But, meteorites
are unique and unusual, so they are ill-suited for a quickie "drive
through" type of sales medium.  Some of the newer dealers have very
nice and flashy websites that are quite effective, but much of the
meteorite world is still operating by it's own rules, so change comes
slowly.

Heck, I still buy the occasional specimen via snail mail and
price-list.  I've bought specimens from Blaine Reed, sight-unseen with
just a brief text description and price.  Not one time have I been
disappointed, and it's exciting to open the package and see the
specimen for the first time.  It's a thrill one can't really get when
you have already seen a dozen hi-res photos from every possible angle
before receiving it in hand.

As for the dealers who still have archives or pages full of sold
specimens, I have no problem with it, if the specimens are marked as
"sold" on the website, and the website is updated on a regular basis
or semi-regular basis.  When I can't tell which specimens are sold and
which are not, that can be frustrating.

Best regards,

MikeG

These damn whippersnappers! In my day we used to walk 5 miles to school in the
driving snow, in June. And it was uphill against the wind in both directions!

Sorry to be a little tongue in cheek there, but that's what it sounds like.
Yes. I've purchase meteorites, this year in fact, sight unseen. The dealer and
their reputation is a testament to this. I also send email inquiring if items I
am interested in are available. Sometimes they are, sometimes they aren't.

It makes little sense to me to fill an inventory page with material you no
longer have for sale. It takes just as much time, money and effort to remove an
item as it does to mark it sold and in an age when you can get a dedicated
website with unlimited bandwidth for <$5 a month, and you can update your site
instantly with your cell phone, I guess I have a hard time understanding why
you wouldn't do that.

Of course you can always not list any inventory on your site and just tell
people to contact you for a copy of your snail mail price list...

For those of us who spend most of our time hunting meteorites in the field, for
me meaning overseas, we just do not have the time needed to update enough. My
site has more than 50 pages of meteorites, in the las 6 months I have only
updated about 10 of them. Often now when I get a new meteorite, it is sold
without ever going on the site, just more Efficient for me. It mostly comes
down to time though.

Re: [meteorite-list] Question for dealers re: displaying sold items

2011-04-12 Thread Michael Mulgrew
List,

I appreciate all of the responses, both on- and off-list. It appears
to me that the #1 reasons for leaving SOLD items up is a lack of time,
3rd party hosting, or added expense to keep the web page up-to-date.
I can fully appreciate these reasons. I also appreciate the resumé,
so to speak, that leaving up SOLD pieces build. This history lesson
hits home with me on how things used to be, but I'm a progressive
person and I'd like to see current technologies utilized more
efficiently rather than reminisce about the past. :)

Speaking purely as a consumer I would recommend that dealers make the
time or find the resources to more clearly differentiate between SOLD
and FOR SALE items rather than having them all lumped together. This
would serve the buying public better. I'm sure there is no shortage
of thesis papers written by marketers on the best ways to present
items one is attempting to sell; there's undoubtedly a whole
psychology behind it. As a few members have already elluded to,
sometimes seeing SOLD everywhere is enough to make the stop shopping -
surely not what any dealers wants from their website.

The simplest think to do would be to move a sold item to the bottom of
the page that it is on and have a clear division on the page between
in-stock and sold. The time it takes to overwrite the price with the
SOLD text would be about the same as to cut and paste the sold
specimen to the bottom of the page. A more elegant solution (although
more time intensive) would be to have a separate portion of the web
site devoted to previously sold specimens.

My humble $0.02,
Michael in so. Cal.

come up yet...

As a collector, I've been really frustrated by how wide spread the lack of
interest in maintaining one's website actually is. As you point our often
the sites are filled with items already sold. I know of at least one dealer
who has told me that for the most part given up on updating his site.

Personally, when I am looking for a specimen to buy, I couldn't care less
what a dealer used to have for sale. It does me no good. If a dealer has an
archive section for these, or put sold items at the bottom of the page,
that's fine. For me, there isn't much worse than opening a page and seeing a
sea of items that have already been "SOLD". This often stops me from looking
for much more.

It has gotten to the point that I'll almost never go to dealer websites
unless they post a link to fresh stock I am interested here or on Facebook.

2011-04-12 Thread Martin Altmann
Uncle Alexander, where art thou?

You have to tell the old stories to the Youth,
who doesn't want to bear the incredible hardship, to type for a minute an
electric message into their newfangled apparatuses and to wait another
minute for an answer, in acquiring a desired meteorite specimen.

Tell them from the days, where the collectors sat down, painting with the
stylus a letter on real paper, putting it in an envelope, taking a walk to
the post office,
and where the happy ending, after that kind of conversation forth and back,
eventuated after months with the find of the specimen in the letter box.

Tell them, how people spent only for making enquiries after a specimen and
to come to terms for oversea-calls more than today a 3 pound Campo does
cost.

Tell them the anecdotes, that collectors sometimes paid the flight for the
finder, for him to come to show a stone to them.

Tell them, how the collectors travelled a thousand miles to the show, to
visit two handful of rotten ordinary chondrites.

Meteorites! Pieces of other worlds, of The Moon and Planet Mars!!

Uncle Alex, see them bluster with SUCH a material, as if they would have to
wait a minute too long at the counter for receiving their burgers!

O tempora, o mores!

The World as Will and Ebay;
Or Meteorites are Socks.

Why not move them to a "sold page" seems that would be more productive. I
find myself doing the same thing. If I see a bunch marked sold I usually
lose interest pretty quick and move on.

Re: [meteorite-list] Question for dealers re: displaying sold items

2011-04-12 Thread Don Merchant
Hi Michael. I feel your pain. I know that I have shopped around and several
times I found a specimen I was interested in that did not have a "sold" next
to it. I would email the Dealer/Seller of my interest, only to find out it
was sold. It would bum me out, I'll admit. Seems logical that has soon as it
is sold, it should be removed immediately or at the least have a "sold" on
the specimen as soon as possible. It's possible Michael that some
Dealers/Sellers cannot do their Website and thus must pay or wait till
someone can make changes. I have my Website and am lucky I can make changes
right away. I have to admit I do spend too much time on itALWAYS
updating I do my best to be loyal to my Buyers/Visitors. To be successful,
especially with the business of Meteorites, one has to keep these Buyers,
Potential Buyers, Visitors and People browsers up to date and fully aware of
available stock. The world of technology, the internet and mobility leaves
few stones for excuses. Not trying to offend anybody just my thought and
only my thought.

Re: [meteorite-list] Question for dealers re: displaying sold items

2011-04-12 Thread Michael Gilmer
Hi Gang,

In my case, I offer mostly micromounts, so keeping dozens of redundant
photos of small crumbs doesn't hold any value in terms of keeping a
record. For larger pieces, I'll keep the specimen online for a couple
of weeks - long enough for the buyer to receive the specimen and
compare it to the listing on the website (if they desire). Then, I do
periodic "prunings" where I delete older sold listings, rotate items
in/out of the "brand new" category, add new content (articles), etc.

I use a hosted ecommerce service that is "turn key". I pay a set fee
per month that is not based on sales like eBay is. Instead, I pay
based on how much server resources my online store consumes -
bandwidth, disk space, etc. One of the criteria used for billing is
the number of items in a store. If I exceed a certain number of
items, I pay an increased fee. So, I keep my overall number of
listings trimmed down to a limit. If I kept a long-term record of all
sold items, I would have exceeded that limit long ago.

I do keep a permanent record of old photos of sold/traded specimens on
my hard-drive and on back-up storage media.

Best regards,

MikeG

Re: [meteorite-list] Question for dealers re: displaying sold items

2011-04-12 Thread fallingfusion
I should have noted that although I am not a "dealer" per say, my website still
needs quite an update/redesign, ect. regardless.

Dealers who did not produce their own website most likely don't have the
capability to update it each time a specimen sells. Furthermore, each
individual update made costs money, paid to the individual or company hired out
to maintain the website for them.

Re: [meteorite-list] Question for dealers re: displaying sold items

2011-04-12 Thread Martin Altmann
>I do not know of any other market that does this.

I do.
Fine Art dealers, numismatic dealers, artifacts auction houses, high-end
antique book shops ect..

And finally, Michael, we're talking about meteorites!
Everything else than a run-of-the-mills-market like the above mentioned ;-)
And certainly not such ordinary and easy reproducible commodities and trivia
like artifacts, fossils or precious stones.

Well, often it isn't laziness.
Look, the few meteorite dealers of the world have permanently to deliver a
better performance than all Antarctic teams together, but without having the
background of dozens and dozens of millions $ a year.

It is a very hard job.
And unfortunately by far not so rewarding like the DiMartinos, Broads,
Smiths and Bevanists of this World do believe in their wet dreams.

That you can estimate, in the observation, that almost none of them, even
not the top-dealers, are able to have employees like any foot care shop or
little book shop has.

Therefore it's simply the lack of time.

Best!
Martin

PS: Although meteorites can be as cheap as clothes, they aren't any.
Michael, that kilo-lump of old uNWA, you're buying at 50 bucks, is still as
rare as 1kg of top-diamonds.

That's btw. why we all are so upset about the NYT-article,
because if everywhere prohibition is introduced, there will be no meteorites
anymore.
Cause they are so horribly difficult to find, that no university could spend
that time and money to find them.
And these regular official expeditions we have, are not able to cover the
scientific demand.
That's why we're always talking about these protectionists, not because we
would care about their characters and motifs, but because we're all afraid,
that they are really so stupid, to bring modern meteoritics worldwide to an
end. (Which means, that they would make also their own jobs obsolete,
ouch!).

Re: [meteorite-list] Question for dealers re: displaying sold items

2011-04-12 Thread Marcin Cimala

Hi
This is not unique to meteorite. Other shops also have products unavailable
or just sold out and waiting for new shipments.
And sometimes is nice to show late buyer what he missed and how looks other
slices that was sold (most cases if specimen have low TKW). But indeed we
are bussy counting our money and we have no time for boring website updates.

It does nothing for helping me find what I'm looking for; in fact it
is counter productive when I am shopping for a specimen as it makes it
more difficult to see what is actually available for sale. It's
synonymous with looking for clothes in your size and every store has
displays showing your size but not actually selling any clothes that
fit you. Maybe a separate page for "Sold Specimens" would be more
appropriate if there was a need that I am not aware of to display
pieces that have already been sold? I look forward to becoming
educated on this matter.

Re: [meteorite-list] Question for dealers re: displaying sold items

2011-04-12 Thread Impactika
Hello,

Mike, it can also mean "I sold this one but I might have more that I have
not had time to post yet, so email me and ask!"
And that is very often the case with me.
I probably have 150-200 pieces that I haven't found time to post yet, other
problems keep on getting in the way. But I keep on trying!
So, just ask!

It's also kinda nice to have up pictures of past sold specimens. You
put a lot of time and effort into photography and web design, seems a
waste to delete things!
