NO-IP not updating!
Hello list. I'm quite new to Openbsd, have used Freebsd for a while. I have a newly installed Openbsd system. OpenBSD machine01.no-ip.org 4.8 GENERIC.MP#335 amd64 Upon installation of noip I ran the command noip2 -C to configure it. I want noip to run a script every 30 minutes that sends a mail to me at the end of the updating of the address. So I choose the settings accordingly when configuring noip. I've put the following in my /etc/rc.local -- # Add your local startup actions here. /usr/local/sbin/noip2 echo '.' -- When the machine is booted I get the mail, but I do not get the updates every 30 minutes as I should. I cannot see if the the daemon starts because the line at the startup screen shows only starting local daemons:, The command: # ps -aux | grep noip Gives _noip 6013 0.0 0.2 428 916 ?? Is10:04AM0:00.01 /usr/local/sb Top shows the process 6013 _noip 20 428K 916K idle select0:00 0.00% noip2 If I kill that process and start noip2 from the command line it also sends the mail at start up but not after the following 30 minutes. I'm not sure whether noip is running every 30 minutes I've been tailing /var/log/messages and I cannot see anything related to noip there. Can anyone on this list point me in the right direction? Thanks /Leslie
.xsession never finishes
Recently .xsession began to take much longer to finish. Upgrading to the 25 Jan snapshot has not changed this. I don't know how long it takes anymore, because I can't wait 5+ minutes every time I log in. The selected background color does display, and the xconsole log displays in the top left corner, but it never goes away and nothing else ever shows up. The mouse pointer moves, but neither button accomplishes anything. X can be run successfully from startx, but that's not preferred. Keyboard bell and attach.
I have a machine at work, beige box with 4.8 on it that doesn't like hotplugd. It's on a kvm. When it boots it uses the keyboard encoding from /etc/kbdtype but after switching the kvm and back it goes to default encoding - qwerty. This machine also has the keyboard bell muted but it beeps from boot. Anyway I installed 4.8 on another machine at home the other day and the same deal. It beeps from boot and although the encoding is fine initially after switching the kvm and back it goes to default encoding - qwerty. I thought it might be the issue with 16 USB devices failing attach so I've removed the kvm (plugging into a MOBO USB port) to no avail and the beep is an issue anyway. Here is wsconsctl.conf grepped: keyboard.bell.volume=0 # mute keyboard beep Contents of kbdtype: us.dvorak Here is rc.conf.local grepped: hotplugd_flags= Log of hotplugd at debug level - 12:46 is boot, 13:04 is unplug, 13:05 is plug: Jan 27 12:46:12 server hotplugd[2262]: started Jan 27 12:46:12 server hotplugd[2262]: uhub1 attached, class 0 Jan 27 12:46:12 server hotplugd[2262]: wskbd1 attached, class 5 Jan 27 12:46:12 server hotplugd[2262]: ukbd0 attached, class 0 Jan 27 12:46:12 server hotplugd[2262]: uhidev0 attached, class 0 Jan 27 12:46:12 server hotplugd[2262]: uhid0 attached, class 0 Jan 27 12:46:12 server hotplugd[2262]: uhidev1 attached, class 0 Jan 27 12:46:12 server hotplugd[2262]: softraid0 attached, class 0 Jan 27 13:04:28 server hotplugd[2262]: wskbd1 detached, class 5 Jan 27 13:04:28 server hotplugd[2262]: ukbd0 detached, class 0 Jan 27 13:04:28 server hotplugd[2262]: uhidev0 detached, class 0 Jan 27 13:04:28 server hotplugd[2262]: uhid0 detached, class 0 Jan 27 13:04:28 server hotplugd[2262]: uhidev1 detached, class 0 Jan 27 13:04:28 server hotplugd[2262]: uhub1 detached, class 0 Jan 27 13:05:13 server hotplugd[2262]: uhub1 attached, class 0 Jan 27 13:05:15 server hotplugd[2262]: wskbd1 attached, class 5 Jan 27 13:05:15 server hotplugd[2262]: ukbd0 attached, class 0 Jan 27 13:05:15 server hotplugd[2262]: uhidev0 attached, class 0 Jan 27 13:05:15 server hotplugd[2262]: uhid0 attached, class 0 Jan 27 13:05:15 server hotplugd[2262]: uhidev1 attached, class 0 Here is wsconsctl -a before unplugging: keyboard.type=pc-xt keyboard.bell.pitch=400 keyboard.bell.period=100 keyboard.bell.volume=0 keyboard.bell.pitch.default=400 keyboard.bell.period.default=100 keyboard.bell.volume.default=50 keyboard.repeat.del1=400 keyboard.repeat.deln=100 keyboard.repeat.del1.default=400 keyboard.repeat.deln.default=100 keyboard.ledstate=0 keyboard.encoding=us.dvorak keyboard1.type=usb keyboard1.bell.pitch=400 keyboard1.bell.period=100 keyboard1.bell.volume=50 keyboard1.bell.pitch.default=400 keyboard1.bell.period.default=100 keyboard1.bell.volume.default=50 keyboard1.repeat.del1=400 keyboard1.repeat.deln=100 keyboard1.repeat.del1.default=400 keyboard1.repeat.deln.default=100 keyboard1.ledstate=0 keyboard1.encoding=us.dvorak display.type=vga-pci display.emulations=vt100 display.screentypes=80x25,80x25bf,80x40,80x40bf,80x50,80x50bf display.focus=0 display.screen_on=250 display.screen_off=30 display.vblank=off display.kbdact=off display.msact=off display.outact=off After re-plugging this is changed: keyboard1.encoding=us Oop, there's one reason to post to misc and read logs. However after unplugging the keyboard and plugging it back in the beep is back and the keyboard encoding is wrong. It isn't supported, but was found during boot ath0 at pci2 dev 0 function 0 Atheros AR5424 rev 0x01: apic 2 int 17 (irq 4) ath0: AR5424 14.2 phy 7.0 rf 0.0, WOR5_ETSIC, address 00:24:2c:6f:ab:c0 It fails to scan network: $ ifconfig ath0 scan debug ath0: unable to reset hardware: hal status 3 I've found that Luis Henriques was able to use it year ago http://www.mail-archive.com/tech@openbsd.org/msg01613.html So I've started from recompiling my kernel. No changes applied just src.tar.gz by ftp and recompiled kernel Running same command gives me other errors: $ ifconfig ath0 scan debug ath0: unable to reset hardware; hal status 200 ath0: unable to reset hardware; hal status 3692322168 Running again gives only second: $ ifconfig ath0 scan debug ath0: unable to reset hardware; hal status 3692322168 Why? I've made no changes in kernel and I was waiting for same error (status 3)! there was no changes except recompiling kernel. I've downloaded src.tar.gz and sys.tar.gz from ftp://ftp.spline.de/pub/OpenBSD/4.8/ which is official ftp mirror 12:33 sergeykish then I've used instructions from http://openbsd.org/faq/faq5.html 5.3.4 - Building the kernel 12:36 sergeykish yes, AR5424 isn't supported, but I've found http://www.mail-archive.com/tech@openbsd.org/msg01613.html 12:36 sergeykish and first step is recompiling kernel and checking same behaviour 12:37 sergeykish but for some reason it is changed, why? 12:37 sergeykish (I've recompiled kernel without patch)

Computer stops responding (freezes up) during uncorrectable data error
I have a disk that has failed; there seem to be damaged areas that cause errors when specific files are accessed. This disk was one of a two-disk mirror running raidframe. The disk has been replaced and the original machine is back up and running again. However as I use a second computer to investigate the failed disk, I have been puzzled that this second computer locks up and stops responding when I try copying files that include various damaged areas of the disk. This second computer has an installation of OpenBSD 4.6, with the kernel recompiled to support raidframe (so I can access the data on the partition); I have also adjusted the drive numbering so that the failed drive believes it is the only disk present in its mirror. On this second computer, the operating system is on a completely different physical disk; the failed disk is not necessary for a completely functional system. However, even though this computer doesn't use the failed disk for its root filesystem - the computer still freezes up and stops responding when the bad sectors are accessed. I even tried using the dump and dd utilities to access the disk with a raw, unmounted partition - but the host computer still freezes up and stops responding after adding a few lines to /var/log/messages. I was expecting the error messages, but not expecting the host system to freeze up - even the mouse stops responding. It's irritating to have to reboot the computer each time I access one of the damaged sectors. I thought this problem might be caused if the drive controller hardware never returns control back to the operating system once the disk error occurs too many times. But the error messages do end up in /var/log/messages, so control does return to the operating system for at least a little while. And yes, repeatedly accessing the same file generates the error messages referring to the same sectors. 1. How can I attempt to access the damaged sectors without causing the entire computer to freeze up and stop responding? 2. I have used stat, ncheck, and fsdb to find and examine the inodes for various files. Is there a utility to show which sectors of the filesystem and/or the drive are actually used by various files? 3. ( em0 is ext_if and em1 is int_if ) # enable queueing on the external interface to control traffic going to # the Internet. use the priq scheduler to control only priorities. set # the bandwidth to 485Kbps to get the best performance out of the TCP # ACK queue. altq on em0 priq bandwidth 485Kb queue { std_out, ssh_im_out, dns_out, \ tcp_ack_out } # define the parameters for the child queues. # std_out - the standard queue. any filter rule below that does not #explicitly specify a queue will have its traffic added #to this queue. # ssh_im_out - interactive SSH and various instant message traffic. # dns_out - DNS queries. # tcp_ack_out - TCP ACK packets with no data payload. queue std_out priq(default) queue ssh_im_out priority 4 priq(red) queue dns_out priority 5 queue tcp_ack_out priority 6 # enable queueing on the internal interface to control traffic coming in # from the Internet. use the cbq scheduler to control bandwidth. max # bandwidth is 2Mbps. altq on em1 cbq bandwidth 2Mb queue { std_in, ssh_im_in, dns_in, student_in } # define the parameters for the child queues. # std_in - the standard queue. any filter rule below that does not # explicitly specify a queue will have its traffic added # to this queue. # ssh_im_in - interactive SSH and various instant message traffic. # dns_in - DNS replies. # student_in - bandwidth reserved for the workstation. # queue std_in bandwidth 1.6Mb cbq(default) queue ssh_im_in bandwidth 200Kb priority 4 queue dns_in bandwidth 120Kb priority 5 queue student_in bandwidth 80Kb cbq clienttcpports={ 21, 80, 8080, 443 } clientudpports={ 53 } # FTP-Proxy anchor ftp-proxy/* pass in quick on $int_if proto tcp from $lan_net to any port 21 \ flags S/SA keep state rdr-to 127.0.0.1 port 8021 # Squid Redirect pass in quick on $int_if proto tcp from $lan_net to any port { 80 8080 } \ flags S/SA keep state rdr-to 127.0.0.1 port 3128 # filter rules block in log block out log #pass out log keep state antispoof quick for { lo $int_if ext_if } pass in log on $int_if inet proto udp from $lan_net to !$int_if \ port $clientudpports keep state pass in log on $int_if inet proto tcp from $lan_net to !$int_if \ port $https flags S/SA keep state pass out log on $ext_if inet proto udp from $ext_if to any \ port $clientudpports keep state queue dns_out pass out log on $ext_if inet proto tcp from $ext_if to any \ port $clienttcpports flags S/SA modulate state queue(std_out, tcp_ack_out) pass out on $int_if proto udp from port $clientudpports to $student_pc \ queue dns_in pass out on $int_if proto tcp from port $clienttcpports to $student_pc \ queue student_in there are some more rules. I think the given rules are enough.. any ideas? -- Thank you Indunil Jayasooriya
Re: Computer stops responding (freezes up) during uncorrectable data error
We waited too long to replace the failed drive, so there were errors on both drives in the mirror, so the data was not completely restored. Backups were not as recent as we would have liked. Since the drive didn't completely fail, it seemed worth trying to retrieve some data where possible from it. 1. Is it normal for the operating system to freeze when accessing damaged sectors - even if the only access is via a raw, unmounted partition? This seems like a hardware problem to me, except that errors are logged to /var/log/messages as I described in the original post. 2. What utilities will show which sectors are occupied by specific files? Ideally I could specify a range of sectors and a list of files using those sectors would be provided. It would also be nice to specify files and be shown which sectors they occupy. I've heard of the Coroner's Toolkit; are there any other recommendations? Unless they are all the same person, there seems to be a sudden rash of people who want to bring a disk back from the dead because they are unwilling or unable to do the math on how much disks cost, how much time costs, and what the future integrity of their data is worth. I don't know why this is, but I do know disks die, buy new ones is the correct answer to give them.
