We won't ever see that here on the left coast. I ruined my snow blower by
not cleaning out the tank over the summer and left crappy Kalifornia gas
in the tank. now have to rebuild the carburetor ( something I've not done
since high school)

Hopefully I'll find time to work on the project GTi this winter.

Re: [mk2-16v] Ethanol Free Gasoline?

2015-11-05 Thread 'Matthew Yip' via MK2-16v
Parts of Northern Virginia only sell 10% ethanol blend - before I found a
station (actually 2 near my house in BFE Virginia), I went thru 1 lawnmower
carb, 1 16v GTi transfer pump, 1 lawntractor carb and 1 Land Rover carb.  Now
that it's winter, the stations near the D of C are switching to their
oxygenated winter blend fuel that makes the ethanol-blend look GOOD...

Re: [mk2-16v] Ethanol Free Gasoline?

2015-11-05 Thread 'Matthew Yip' via MK2-16v
Ethanol-free gasoline is better all around because it's 100% gasoline instead
of a hydro-phillic gasoline additive that causes deterioration of older rubber
bits in the fuel system.  The ethanol blends are so bad that small gasoline
engine manufacturers (think your lawnmower or tractor) are instructing owners
to not let the fuel sit for more than 7 days to avoid separation of ethanol in
the gasoline.  I run 100% gasoline in my Land Rover, not because of it's high
compression ratio (although I do have the hi-po motor with 8.5:1 compression)
but rather because the ethanol blend is brutal on the carb and fuel pump.
If you have the option of using 100% gasoline AND you don't drive the car that
often, by all means, use 100% gasoline.  Regardless of the fuel, of you don't
use the car that often, add Sta-Bil as well to maintain a prayer of having
usable gasoline after 30 days.

Higher octane rating, none of the ethanol related crap problems out there.
Lotsa people here in South Central PA use it for their small engine devices
(mowers, chain saws, etc.) as well as their older cars with no problems. It
may require a bit of fine tuning to get the best out of it though. Google
it...Jack

Re: [mk2-16v] Some more interesting reading, CIS-E Manual pdf

2015-11-05 Thread Steven Arguello
I hope so, Larry. I'm in the same boat, it's helped some but I still have some
serious issues. Mostly from the car having sat in my driveway for too long.
Nothing comes out of one fuel dizzy (I have 2 sets of everything) and the other
one never stops, even with the sensor plate at rest. From what I read in the
manual, with the plate at rest the injector shouldn't even drip. Mine hum
nicely as soon as I turn on the fuel pump. I even pulled the fuel dizzy off the
airbox to make sure the plate isn't pressing on the plunger.
I suppose that the plunger or the walls of its housing can wear. Is this the
most likely reason the injectors are always on?

I got a loaner fuel pressure tester from autozone and it didn't have the right
fittings. I faked it with hose clamps etc and was able to get one reading of
75psi before everything got soaked in gas.

As always any help is appreciated.
Steve

RE: [mk2-16v] Troubleshooting CIS-E Video Party

2015-11-05 Thread Larry Velez
Steve,

How about I setup a webinar one day coming soon and you and I can setup cameras
and others can join in and watch as we troubleshoot our fuel issues. Anyone
could join via phone or computer and participate. We can learn from the
experts on this list and I can record the session for posterity to help people
in the future with some hands on visuals that might be more useful than staring
at the Bentley.

A lot of people are giving up on CIS completely and putting in aftermarket
electronic fuel injection but I am not there yet - I kind of feel I should
learn how to fix it as stock before mucking with aftermarket systems.

So far I broke the metal lines to the main fuel pump trying to remove it and am
cleaning up a replacement pump to install that and see if that helps any. I
now have a nagging feeling the main fuel pump was fine but I was getting no
fuel at all at the fuel distributor so I blamed the main fuel pump.

Let me know what you think and I can easily set it up with GoToMeeting and
whoever wants to join can join the party via phone, video or chat.

I also blame ethanol for all my fuel system headaches. (also that I should not
let the car sit for any amount of time)

When I get her up and running again only ethanol free gas.. I found a boat
gas station with ethanol free gas nearby, maybe they have something higher
than 89 octane – I’ll have to call and ask.
