hey i was thinking about this k-tel thing. Its interesting that modest mouse will be on this K-tel label and K records too... I cant figure out how Up fits in though. in re: the mouse, i must admit I too noticed how quickly the kids so reverently caught on. I saw them about 6 months or so before long drive (might have been even earlier; at the time broke wasn't yet out, and I hadn't heard of the blue cadet 7", so i don't know if it was yet out) ... anyhow, they were opening for gas huffer at the redmond firehouse and were just constantly heckled throughout their entire set. but it seemed just months after long drive was released (at a show opening for DNSS), there were quite a few people there to see the mouse, and i kept seeing a lot of the same faces at later shows. i was happy. and i wish the mouse plenty of success. i'm no indie eltist, but i have to admit, the notion of sharing space at a MM show with korn fans does make me queasy. whatever. that's all star

About this "indie" thing: I'm new on this list, and I'm wondering what all the recent bad blood is about. I didn't save his e-mail, but from what I remember reading, Russ (it was Russ, wasn't it?) was just sharing his opinion with the rest of us. I don't understand why everyone's jumping all over him about it. Can't we lay off the sarcasm, name-calling (indier-than-thou? Please. It's so indie, whatever that means, to not be indie nowadays... but not to excess, of course.) and bad vibes for a while, and just discuss things civilly? We're all entitled to our own opinions, and to express them freely. What sucks is when people start moving away from ideas and into personal territory. Into bullying, pettiness, and incoherent rambling. So before this situation gets out of hand, let's all lighten up and keep talking to, not at, each other. Thank you. Stepping off the soapbox, Sylvia

[MMouse]: 'emo'
Interesting story--the first time I heard the word 'emo' was 2 years ago...i ran into this singer who I hadn't seen for a while. we were talking about music and our bands and he goes, "We're EMO now!" Just a few years before this guy was calling his band "grunge". I'm like, "what the fuck is emo, dude?" and he starts talking about drive like jehu and some other bands (who are all good bands, IMHO). I had recently discovered modest mouse so I asked if he had heard them. He said he had but he was not into them or something. is modest mouse 'emo'? according to all of the 'emo' people i know, most of whom are in 'emo' bands, wear 'emo' clothes, and cry a lot, modest mouse is not 'emo.' don't know why--perhaps it's cuz the mouse has a sense of humor. these 'emo' folks, they like to yell and cry for the most part. but the mouse, i get the impression that the mouse likes to yell and cry and laugh and drink. however, most of the emo 'bois', as these 'emo' fellas i know call themselves, have phat-ass sideburns, like the kind mr. brock had (or still has? i dont know). Maybe that's where the connection is. Here in detroit the emo folks seem to have distanced themselves from the mouse--braid, promise ring, etc etc are all 'emo' and hip, but you hardly ever hear modest mouse on the 'emo' college radio shows. and modest mouse usually doesnt come up in 'emo'-conversation. and that's all there is to know about 'emo' bois and gurls in detroit. not that anyone wanted to know. ___ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. EXACTLY! This person is right on. Actually, their entire post was right on, but you knew that. Didn't anyone else see Beck's small club tour in '96 wiff da Mouse & Money Mark in tow? I wasn't the only one buying their CD for the first time that night, I remember. I think it would really be a burden to be a musician who is successful on any level. As soon as you are able to sell enough records to go from full-time to part-time at the diner, you have Joe Elite telling you that you're selling out and not being true to yrself. You just can't make all the people happy ever. And that would probably frustrate me to the point of excess drinking whilest I was rocking. And then when Mr. Scenester makes some wiseass snap from the middle of the room, I would haul my Les Paul copy into the audience and crown his cranium with its rusty machineheads. I think if there were more altercations between band and audience, then people would maybe realize the error of their ways. One could only hope. Breaking down the fourth wall, kids. Re: hockey I think the greatest hockey highlight ever would be Jaromir Jagr's 100th point last season against the Flyers. He broke down ice with one guy to beat. The defenseman hauled him off his skates, but somehow Jags jabs the puck toward the net. It deflects off of Hextall's chest and Jags bats it out of mid-air while sliding down ice on his stomach. Goal. I was there, and I about soiled my knickers seeing that beauteous moment. Is it October yet? And on a Modest Mouse note, is anyone taping the Euro shows? I gots mad love to trade, believe dat.
