The Corporation is wonderful. I wish more people saw it. Can't get into Star Wars this weekend. It's all sold-out. We were going to see it at the drive-in where my hubby first saw it as a little boy, but too packed as well.

I can't wait!

Well since few have chimed in, I might as well.I think it's one of those things where you almost feel too guilty liking"Sith," so disappointing the series has been since "The Empire StrikesBack," the first sequel back in 1980 -- and SO not Oscar worthy (never hasbeen and never will). We saw "Sith" Thursday night. About a third of thereviews I've read were mixed (most were qualified raves, excepting theabsolutely rotten, snarky, venomous and poisonous review by Anthony Lane inthis week's New Yorker; truly unconstructive and one of the foulest /crudest reviews I've read in that otherwise fine rag in a long time). So I went in with obviously lowered expectations.Well I came out liking "Revenge of the Sith" a lot. I gave it an "A-"compared to the other five Star Wars movies. (Not an "A-" compared to allfilms.) And I liked!
  it 10
times more than both Matrix sequels combined. It's ridiculous to put this film up against "all-time classics" which bragsuperb acting and storylines. But "Sith" recaptures the pop culturemythology of "Star Wars" that disappeared after 1980 -- and hijacked foreverafter the cutesy Ewoks took over as the "fearsome warriors" I laughed at in1983's "Return of the Jedi."The new film is riveting in a simplistic way and feels shot out of a cannonfrom the opening credits. It has none of the slowness of the first two"prequels." It's engaging because it leads into all that was introduced inthe first Star Wars in 1977. Excepting the brilliant opening battlesequence (which felt like a wonderful 30 minute rush), most of the scenesfelt no longer than two minutes, using multiple pans, wipes and checkboarddissolves. The film runs 2:26 but doesn't feel like it. And I don't carewhat the critics say, Hayden Christensen and Natalie Portman a!
 re fine
withwhat little they've been given. People seem to forget the first Star Warsfilm was refreshing because it was sleek and spare, absent of actingfireworks and driven by a serial- / comic-book like structure that had beendropped into the middle of high-traffic "R" rated anti-establishment filmsof the 1970s like "Network," "Coming Home" and "Taxi Driver."Where the pre-quels went wrong -- amid their high-tech special effects -- isthey disconnected themselves from the fun mythology of the "Star Wars" of1977 and 1980. So Lucas proved himself a fluke as the fine director of theclassic "American Grafitti" and the first "Star Wars." But with "Sith" he'sback in fine form. Lucas will never win an Oscar with his name on it fordirecting or writing or anything. But I put "Sith" up there with the 1977and 1980 Star Wars movies. Also, the new film boasts one acting performance that is arguably Oscarworthy -- and it comes from I!
 an
McDiarmid, the guy who appeared in the 1983film as Emperor Palpatine/Darth Sidious -- but whose character wasreferenced throughout the entire series. He's the guy Darth Vader "bowed"to throughout the first trilogy. You couldn't miss him -- he was the gnarlyold man in the death hood. Well, here he returns as Chancellor Palpatine --a middle-aged man before he was deformed -- a man filled with politicaltreachery and intrigue -- a fantastic villain. His dialogue and deliveryare riveting -- and the result is a picture filled with darkness. Truly, when you see "Sith" -- I think you'll come out feeling "Sith Episode III"(2005) -- followed by the original "Star Wars Episode IV" (1977) -- are thebest "chapters" / self-contained bookends in the series. Seeing Darth Vaderback on the big screen for the first time in 22 years is glorious -- buthe's on far too short -- and says far too little."Sith" actually has you wanting more. And tha!
 t's
always a good sign. Nobig happy ending in this film, but people clapped nevertheless.Of course I'm not talking Scorcese, Coppola or anything close to cinemagreatness. But "Sith" re-delivers what knocked us out in 1977. What'sunbelievable to me is the durability of the Star Wars franchise, now 2generations old. Twenty-eight years have gone by in a flash -- and right orwrong, its impact on the world's pop culture is impossible to dismiss. ByChristmas, when "true" Oscar worthy pictures come out "on purpose," e.g.,"Memoirs of a Geisha" directed by "Chicago" director Robb Marshall and MelBrooks' "The Producers," "Sith" will likely be on DVD and forgotten exceptfor the usual technical categories.OK, that's it from me.-koose.Visit the MoPo Mailing List Web Site at www.filmfan.com___How to UNSUBSCRIBE from the MoPo Mailing ListSend a me!

Re: [MOPO] Query about loaned posters?

2005-05-22 Thread Toochis Morin
What a great idea, Cindy. I guess to start with: great packing, insurance, credit in the program and perhaps something to show the IRS. I wish you so much luck on this series; it sounds wonderful.

ToochisCindy Nemeth-Johannes [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Our town’s original theater, The Rialto, is celebrating its 80th anniversary this weekend. They celebrated by showing Douglas Fairbanks in “The Mark of Zorro.” It would have been cool had I known in advance and asked for material on the film as a loaner through MOPO connections. Can you imagine having the Rialto and our local museum showing posters, WCs, lobbies, pressbooks and glass slides from the first year that the theater was open?

If I could get advance notice on the films picked for the 90th, what would be required to make people comfortable in loaning their material? We have a very respected museum that does great art shows that could handle curatorial duties, conservation, etc. Insurance could be covered, proper handling and shipping, climate control. Probably the museum would put on a show with more movies and the orchestra. There is a well-maintained theater organ installed in the Lory Center at CSU which is often played along with classic silent films. They’ve got a great art department as well.
What would it take for you to feel comfortable about loaning your material to such a show?

Just wondering,
Cheers,
Cindy

the city, and what is CSU.

[MOPO] Loveland's Rialto Theater, was RE: [MOPO] Loaned Posters

2005-05-22 Thread Cindy Nemeth-Johannes
Very true, Danny

The Rialto Theater is in Loveland, Colorado. I was wrong, this was the 85th
celebration.

Here is the city's main page on the Rialto:
http://www.ci.loveland.co.us/rialto/rialto.htm

The Rialto is a success story for theater restoration. Ted and Mabel
Thompson, as a young married couple, were sent to open up the Rialto in
1920. It was equipped for films and minor vaudeville. The Thompsons became
stalwarts of the Loveland community, with Ted serving as Mayor of Loveland,
building The Dude Corral motel and restaurant across from Lake Loveland
and providing heart and heritage for the community. They are best
remembered outside of Colorado as Loveland's Sweethearts, who started
Loveland's Valentine re-mailing program in 1947.

The Rialto went through many of the cycles of small theaters, eventually
ending up with a plastic or vinyl façade in the 1960s in an attempt to look
modern. I remember seeing the lobby cards for the original Stepford wives
there in the lobby while a scant crowd waited dutifully for popcorn and
Cokes.

One owner turned it into a mini-mall which failed economically. Still, under
the plastic? Vinyl? Façade, the original existed and could be restored. It
was then ripped up inside and left until Felicia Harmon, of the then
Downtown Development Agency, made it her mission to make the Rialto a
vibrant, restored magnet for downtown. It took considerable political skill
on her part for the City of Loveland to agree to buy the building and many,
many donations and grants to get it restored.

It was restored and is now a well-used and loved performing arts space in
addition to showing movies, often with an orchestra. Felicia is now a
consultant with the KRH Group which has helped to restore several historic
theaters and other treasures.

The history page on the site:

http://www.ci.loveland.co.us/rialto/history.htm

The Museum is the Loveland Museum Gallery, which has a sort of split
mission - honoring the history and heritage of Loveland and as promoter of
our considerable community of artists. Here's that page:

http://www.ci.loveland.co.us/Cultural_Services/cultural_services_museum.htm

Loveland is best known artistically for its several big sculpture shows.
Currently in the museum is the Colorado Governor's Art Show (14th Annual, I
believe.)

Link to our big annual sculpture show: http://www.sculptureinthepark.org/

Colorado State University, in Fort Collins, has several renowned professors
who make fine art posters and for thirteen years hosted the only
international poster art show in the U.S. They discontinued last year, I
think because Bob Coonts retired from the program, but they have a great
digital archive.

CSU also hosts a yearly workshop in theater organ playing on the 3/19
Wurlitzer at the Lory Student Center.

Thanks for asking, Danny.

I'm glad you mentioned Hayden Christiansen in SHATTERED GLASS. This film
(PLEASE CHECK IT OUT ON DVD IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT) -- turned me completely
around about Christiansen's acting abilities. If you listen to his line
deliveries between his first appearance in Star Wars and what he does in the
new Star Wars film -- what a DIFFERENCE.

If you haven't seen Shattered Glass, it's the true, riveting story of
24-year-old journalist Stephen Glass, who in the late 1990s got caught
writing a bunch of bogus stories for the liberal weekly magazine the New
Republic. We rented the film and made the mistake of putting it in the DVD
player around midnight, thinking we would watch the first few minutes and
pick up the rest the next night. Well, we couldn't shut it off.
Magnificent and wonderful, not art house stuff at all. He carries the whole
picture w/his lies, emotional breakdowns and false bravado.

Aw man - I already have big problems with this list.

What? 1986's The Fly listed as one of the top 100 films of ALL TIME?

They're already going to get scores of angry letters for leaving off 1939's
Gone with the Wind.

But where's 1967's The Graduate or 1946's The Best Years of Our Lives or
1968's 2001: A Space Odyssey?

I can probably live w/three of those four omissions, but Leaving off The
Graduate is unforgivable.

. . and were there no political films, or did I miss it at quick glance?

All The President's Men

I was glad to see Alexander Mackendrick there with Sweet Smell of Success.

Just a few off the top of my head, there'll be more.

Re: [MOPO] Loveland's Rialto Theater, was RE: [MOPO] Loaned Posters

2005-05-22 Thread Evan Zweifel

I have very mixed feelings about the rialto. They occasionally show silent films with live accompanment, and getting to see classics on the big screen is fabulous. The restoration is great -- the theater looks awesome.

I've seen several films there -- however, I should say, I've seen dvds there (they used to have 35 mm, but I think they've abandonded that) and they look OK and they sound OK -- but not the quality that I've come to expect from modern movie theaters.

But...

The last movie I saw there, King Kong, was shown on VHS (believe it or not) -- which doesn't look so hot blown upfor a25 foot screen. Frankly it was embarassingly bad -- and I will certainly call before making the 30 minute drive again.

On a more positive note -- if you ever get the chance to see King Kong on the big screen -- GO!

Evan.
-- Original message -- Very true, Danny The Rialto Theater is in Loveland, Colorado. I was wrong, this was the 85th celebration. Here is the city's main page on the Rialto: http://www.ci.loveland.co.us/rialto/rialto.htm The Rialto is a success story for theater restoration. Ted and Mabel Thompson, as a young married couple, were sent to open up the Rialto in 1920. It was equipped for films and minor vaudeville. The Thompsons became stalwarts of the Loveland community, with Ted serving as Mayor of Loveland, building "The Dude Corral" motel and restaurant across from Lake Loveland and providing heart and heritage for the community. They are best remembered outside of Colorado as Loveland's Sweethearts, who started Lovelan!
d's Valentine re-mailing program in 1947. The Rialto went through many of the cycles of small theaters, eventually ending up with a plastic or vinyl façade in the 1960s in an attempt to look modern. I remember seeing the lobby cards for the original Stepford wives there in the lobby while a scant crowd waited dutifully for popcorn and Cokes. One owner turned it into a mini-mall which failed economically. Still, under the plastic? Vinyl? Façade, the original existed and could be restored. It was then ripped up inside and left until Felicia Harmon, of the then Downtown Development Agency, made it her mission to make the Rialto a vibrant, restored magnet for downtown. It took considerable political skill on her part for the City of Loveland to agree to buy the building and many, many donations and grants to get it restored. It was rest!
ored and is now a well-used and loved performing arts space in

; addition to showing movies, often with an orchestra. Felicia is now a consultant with the KRH Group which has helped to restore several historic theaters and other treasures. The history page on the site: http://www.ci.loveland.co.us/rialto/history.htm The Museum is the Loveland Museum Gallery, which has a sort of split mission - honoring the history and heritage of Loveland and as promoter of our considerable community of artists. Here's that page: http://www.ci.loveland.co.us/Cultural_Services/cultural_services_museum.htm Loveland is best known artistically for its several big sculpture shows. Currently in the museum is the Colorado Governor's Art Show (14th Annual, I believe.) Link to our big annual sculpture show: http://www.sculptureinthepark.org/ Colorado State University, in Fort Col!
lins, has several renowned professors who make fine art posters and for thirteen years hosted the only international poster art show in the U.S. They discontinued last year, I think because Bob Coonts retired from the program, but they have a great digital archive. CSU also hosts a yearly workshop in theater organ playing on the 3/19 Wurlitzer at the Lory Student Center. Thanks for asking, Danny. Re: [MOPO] TIME MAGAZINE'S PICKS OF THE TOP 100 FILMS OF ALL TIME

2005-05-22 Thread JRS

I have to agree with David, Ralph, Henry and others... there are huge gaps
in this list, which are filled by some 2nd and even 3rd ratefilms.
Apparently the authors decided to try and come up with a list that was all
things to all people, and ended upwith a mongrel that may be "interesting"
but which don't really hunt as the "Best 100 films of All Time". Of course, no
one would ever agree on the exact makeup of such a list, that's far too
personal, but even a first year college film student could come up with a better
overall selection than this. A pitiful effort, really.

I agree, JR. This list is so impoverished
thatbrowsing throughit was actually somewhat painful. I now know one
additional place NOT to go to read a movie review.
