Quite frankly, everybody I know seems to think they are fake. Everybody else on the list, please be so kind and refrain from comments until Ed and Sue have had their say. Thank you. Helmut wrote this four days ago, and as of yet, no response from Ed. I think it would be really nice if every long time dealer in the hobby needs to weigh in on this subject, either saying they believe them to be genuine, some sort of re-strikes, or reproductions, or that they don't have enough knowledge or evidence to give an opinion. Certainly, it would be great if new collectors were presented with those opinions, so they could have all the information needed to decide if they want to buy any of these. I have made this the subject of my latest e-mail club poll. I state the following in my club message: I felt it is long overdue that the members of this club discuss something that has been whispered about all through the hobby for years, namely the minty white inserts that have sold in great quantities on eBay. I want to bring this subject out in the open and I hope some of the leading voices in this hobby will come out publicly with THEIR views on this subject, either through a message to me that they allow me to print here with their name, or through a post to an online forum (I have long ago made my own views on this subject known, and will do so again in this club next week when I present the results of the following poll). This NEW poll asks, My opinion of the authenticity of minty white inserts is (see below for a detailed explanation of what these are): The listed choices are: I believe the minty white inserts are genuine posters that were printed at the time of release. I believe the minty white inserts are re-strike posters that were printed at the time of release. I believe the minty white inserts are re-strike posters that were printed after the time of release. I believe the minty white inserts are reproductions that were printed long after the time of release. I believe there is not enough evidence to make an absolute decision on these either way. Other (please explain what your other opinion is) IMPORTANT NOTE: One of the most controversial subjects in the movie paper collecting hobby are the minty white inserts which are endlessly sold on eBay (these are top titles from the 1970s and 1980s which are printed on a different sort of paper stock from that of any insert from the same period any collector has ever seen). The inserts are printed on a whiter than white paper that is glossy on both sides, which has earned them the well-deserved nickname of minty white inserts. Since the beginning of eBay, hundreds (or thousands) of EACH of these titles have been sold, and there is seemingly an endless supply of each. In the early days of eBay, these titles sold for roughly the same prices as known originals, but in recent years, their prices have dropped significantly, and it is rare that they are purchased by anyone who is not a brand new collector. Many collectors purchased these early in their collecting career, and have found them difficult or impossible to re-s! ell. Most collectors and dealers have an opinion as to the originality of these posters! Some say they are originals from a warehouse find, others say they are re-strikes that were printed from the original plates, either at the time or later, and some say they are flat out reproductions, printed years after the fact. Pick whichever of the choices below best describes YOUR personal opinion of these minty white inserts (feel free to expand on your opinion in the Comments box below, and please be sure to say whether you have ever bought or sold any of these inserts) If any MoPo members are NOT members of my e-mail club, you can join by going to http://www.emovieposter.com/mail/clubsignup.php (only club members can vote in the poll) I will post the results of the poll on MoPo next week, along with my thoughts. I hope that during the coming week, Ed and Sue will give their thoughts, and that many other longtime dealers will post as well. Thanks to Helmut for once again raising this issue. There may be lots of controversy over this subject, but there is no disputing that hundreds of thousands of dollars (maybe millions!) have been spent on these inserts, and there is no disputing that they currently sell for a fraction of the price of known originals, so this certainly is an important issue for our hobby! Re: [MOPO] Fake inserts, an open question to LAMP
I have been dubious about the minty white inserts for a long time, but I don't KNOW. I would certainly not buy one knowingly with the intention of reselling it. I am in the reselling business, and I want people to have confidence that what they buy from me is authentic. If avoiding these posters fosters that, I am happy to give up any potential profits from them. Unless some real factual information comes forward that is completely credible, my opinion is that these are damaged goods at best. Re: [MOPO] Fake inserts
Hey Bruce/Mopo: Well, there's no question they're fakes. If they were real, all these guys would have to do is publicly display ONE SINGLE insert that came from a theatre. One insert that is from the same print-run as the 'minty whites'. Just one. Prove that ONE of them existed 30 years ago. That's it. That's all. And, they haven't been able to do that in how many years now (remember the artwork was changed on a lot of the fakes)? Originals (with provenance) ALL have this artwork - minty white ones (all without provenance) ALL have that different artwork. They're fake. Period. End of story. Over and out... Re: [MOPO] Fake inserts
Oh yeah, I never actually worked at an NSS warehouse before, but I think a couple people on here did, so I'd love to hear them chime in. But, I've been inside several poster-distributors - and the idea that there was literally thousands of each title of the most highly used (and popular) inserts lying around in a warehouse, completely unused, is absolutely ludicrous! That kind of thing could possibly happen for one sheets, lobby cards or stills even, but never, ever inserts, 30by40's or 40by60's! So, you're telling me that like 90% of the entire US print-run of inserts - for 10 years straight - ended up unused and forgotten in a lost warehouse somewhere, and no one ever noticed?!? Almost ALL of the inserts ever printed that decade, and none made it to a theatre! Wow. That's incompetence on an almost unprecedented scale! Either that, or they're fakes... Again, if anyone's ever been inside an NSS warehouse, how big was the area that they stored like 50 years worth of inserts? And, how big would this warehouse have to be to hold a thousand copies or more of every title from the 70's? Now, let's compare the two... ;o) Cheers, Bob - Original Message - From: Bruce Hershenson [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: MoPo-L@LISTSERV.AMERICAN.EDU Sent: Sunday, June 10, 2007 9:45 AM Subject: Re: [MOPO] Fake inserts Channing wrote: Instead of getting people opinions on these inserts, isn't there some way to find out the actual story? Re: [MOPO] Fake inserts
I think you underestimate yourself, Bruce. With all of your resources in the movie poster world, I have no doubt that at some point, sooner or later, you'll have a definitive answer. As to my opinion, whatever that is worth, they look like fakes to me. Someone once said if it's too good to be true, it probably is. That's my instinct with these posters. On the other hand, the word probably is always hovering in the atmosphere until the facts of the matter have been borne out. Re: [MOPO] Fake inserts, an open question to LAMP
I think they are clearly repro's of some sort and would not touch one with a 10 foot pole. Sam Posteritati 239 Centre Street New York, NY 10013 212-226-2207/ Fax: 212-226-2102 http://www.posteritati.com/ On Jun 10, 2007, at 10:35 AM, Bruce Hershenson wrote: Helmut Hamm wrote: My question to Ed and Sue from LAMP is: Do you actually still see a 'controversy' over this issue [the authenticity of the minty white inserts]? There may be lots of controversy over this subject, but there is no disputing that hundreds of thousands of dollars (maybe millions!) have been spent on these inserts, and there is no disputing that they currently sell for a fraction of the price of known originals, so this certainly is an important issue

[MOPO] Off Topic SOPRANOS The Finale Sublime
Okay I don't know how many Mopo'ers were regular viewers of Sopranos...but I truly spent my Sundays at 6:00 or 9:00 (East Coast transmission or West Coast airing many time both) since its first HBO airing. When between seasons I turned into a relentless channel switcher looking for movies or some programming approaching SOPRANO'S quality and unless it was a true classic on TCM it proved a futile exercise. The stunning series ended tonight in brilliant fashion, building suspense oh so slowly while attending to loose story lines. Then Tony having a rare dinner just with the wife and his adult kids at a favorite diner, while familiar hit men quietly enter and then.literally. Those dots will leave you spellbound. As for inserts if doubtful don't buy. That simple. Pass it on. freeman fisher 8601 west knoll drive #7 west hollywood, ca 90069 ** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. [MOPO] Off Topic SOPRANOS Finale Sublime - (SPOILER WARNING)
(DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE SOPRANOS FINALE.) I'm not so sure, Freeman. Were the familiar hit men you say are familiar seen in some other context previously? Or were they FBI tails? The ending is ambiguous and brilliant because of it. Either way -- the family has been gelded. Why? Because my first impression was yours -- that the whacking takes place moments after the camera goes But as I thought about it more -- there is a second back-story that creator David Chase kept pushing into my face -- whereby the FBI is complicit in ensuring Tony's survival -- so that the years it has spent trying to get him indicted, finally pays off. After Tony's rival gang leader is literally popped -- the FBI agent briefly celebrates, saying, Damn, were going to win this thing! The dark opera ending that I prefer, of course, is the one you mention -- it seems more fitting. But isn't it like David Chase to leave the audience NOT QUITE SURE? This is brilliant because David Chase I felt was never going to go conventional on us and show us a Hollywood ending. I think people may argue about this ending for a long time... -koose. Re: [MOPO] Off Topic Sopanos Spoiler Warning
Oh no, Freeman, I agree. And wasn't it great? With regard to whether the FBI had the ability to intercept, that too, is up for debate. ** But it's pretty clear that by the time we reach the ending, everyone knows that w/the popping of rival gang leader Phil -- that Tony's enemies have lost their leader. The motive to whack the Sopranos is lost because the rival gang's own top lieutenants tip their hands earlier -- even if they were lying -- that they has no stomach for war. Phil's lieutenant, receiving no commitment to be made by Phil himself -- meets Tony at a neutral location and decides to let Tony hit his boss without hitting back. He won't provide Phil's location but the FBI is trying to hide its enthusiasm, giving Tony subtle leads about Phil's possible location, etc. ** The FBI has nothing to gain losing Tony and everything to gain by keeping him solvent. The FBI has been setting up Tony from the beginning, making Tony feel like the FBI could actually help him survive. Even the counter-terrorism stuff may be been a set-up -- because since the series premiered in 1999, the FBI has tried all sorts of things, playing cat-and-mouse with Tony, coming close to nailing him, but always missing. ** We as an audience know that the Sopranos are right wing mobsters who can be played w/the terrorism angle, and the vexing thing for the family is the issue about A.J. and his confusion about the world around him. Because when the chips are down, despite their feelings about America, they'll let A.J. do anything even marginally illegal just to keep him from joining the Army. I agree the A.J. plot line gave A.J. something to do, providing a subtext that was close to a damn speech. And this was starting to get annoying only because you can hear the audience saying to themselves, yes, yes, we get all that, but what's going to happen to Tony? ** I'm cancelling HBO tomorrow and renewing when Curb Your Enthusiasm returns in September. [MOPO] Sopanos Aftermath
And let's not forget another reason why the Sopranos was great. It left us with 86 shows since 1999 -- and in my view, only about 20 of 'em could be called duds (and even those have to be qualified because they weren't total stinkers). Its detractors rightly were disgusted by the language and sex and other elements, but David Chase created an alternate universe so convincingly that even when you hated to watch, once you did, you were hooked. Any show that allowed us to see the legendary Lauren Bacall get smacked and then deliver an f-bomb with such smoothness and assurance was worth something. Everyone knows Betty Bacall is closer to what we saw in the Sopranos -- than our idealized version of her in movies. In real life, she swears off camera like a sailor. There were a lot of great episodes and star-turns, but I have to say that that episode, along with College in season 1 and the episodes involving Janice popping her husband after hitting her -- and Ralphie getting killed by Tony in the kitchen, arguing over a HORSE -- stick out in my mind. Oh and before I forget; the singular episode (and probably the only) where Lorraine Bracco got to show her acting chops -- after she's sexually attacked and has to decide whether, when she sees her assailant later, to tell Tony to help her exact revenge. Just a great show... -koose. MOPO has allowed some off topic stuff - and occasionally we've gotten off the range, but most of the members are pretty good at self-governance. And we have a brilliant shepherd - Scott - who administers the whole thing. Whenever I post something other than movie poster patter, I label it OFF TOPIC, and I try to keep it in the neighborhood.
