I have just come in on this thread...I think maybe some wrong ends of stick has been taken however I do find such language offensive especially that this is an open forum and women and younger people can read this. Kirby I feel your quote was meant as a joke and yes the language was racy...but the C word is highly offensive...couldn't you have expletive deleted the word? A little restraint maybe...this is closing the stable door after the horse has bolted but it is not just Diana...there are other girls on this forum that probably are by no means prudes and enjoy a joke and a laugh but still find that word offensive even reading it. Most of us are adults here, most of us know each other on this forum and most of us use gamey language especially over a beer putting the world to rights, but reading such language can be misconstrued. Even if it is a reprint of a quote...and by the way Billy Connolly paraphrased the quote on The Secret Policeman's Second Ball way back in the 1980's and it was much funnier...maybe it takes a comedy genius to actually make the C word funny...by the way in my humble opinion that was the only time the use of that word was funny. I am by no means a prude and believe me many drivers I encounter when on the streets of London do get called that word when I am on my own, but I have to say within the earshot of people I respect I don't like to use it and I don't like to hear it. I also feel it is not needed on a movie...Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels seems to have started the trend, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang with Val Kilmer saying it to emphasise a point - In my humble opinion I think it degrades a movie and should put a R rating on a film. Please don't think I am beating a moral drum, I simply feel that a public forum is not the place to put such racy language...put a few @*#$ instead of the word itself...it's a lot less offensive. -Original Message- From: Richard Halegua Posters + Comic Art sa...@comic-art.com To: MoPo-L MoPo-L@LISTSERV.AMERICAN.EDU Sent: Sun, 10 Jun 2012 7:21 Subject: Re: [MOPO] HIGHLY OFFENSIVE: Seriously? what planet are you living on, out of curiosity?? Interesting points...but I would advocate that the word Negro is a very noble word and the bastardisation is not. However to take this further Wing Commander Guy Gibson called his dog Nigger, this is an historic fact, if you watch the film The Dam Busters they have not shied away from it...the promised remake though will have the dogs name dropped...I agree the word is offensive in todays society but if a film is to be historic then keep to the history...the Tukagee Airmen were often called this by their officers and each other...Dam Busters and Tuskagee airmen were both in the same war...so if history is concerned lets keep it that way and not offend those that gave their lives...there are still a few Dam Busters alive and the death of Gibson's dog was an important historiv event the day before the raid. -Original Message- From: allen day aday_5...@yahoo.com To: MoPo-L MoPo-L@LISTSERV.AMERICAN.EDU Sent: Sun, 10 Jun 2012 11:32 Subject: Re: [MOPO] HIGHLY OFFENSIVE: Seriously? The C-word has quite a long and sometimes controversial history in the English language...a direct reference to it appears in The Miller's Tale, a story in Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, written in the 14th century. (I remember being amazed by that reference way back when we studied Chaucer in high school. Just wondering...is Chaucer a part of any high school curriculum today? I have found that women are deeply offended when a man uses the C word but are less so when they hurl the D word at a man and both genders use the other F word without a second thought. The point is if you're offended by wretched words, then you should be offended by all of them, not just the ones that insult your own being. That said, I don't think it's appropriate to be using this kind of language in a public forum, especially when children may have access. [MOPO] Our current set of Sunday auctions began on June 3rd and lasts for TWO weeks, ending NEXT Sunday June 17th
* Our current set of Sunday auctions began on * *June 3rd** and lasts for TWO weeks, ending NEXT Sunday June 17th. It contains * * 998 GREAT bulk lots miscellaneous items of all types. * This is the first of our new once a month miscellaneous Sunday auctions (which alternates with once a month rolled one-sheet auctions) and because we wanted to start this off with a real *BANG*, we absolutely loaded it with really great items of all types! What will you find in these auctions? Basically, *ANYTHING* and *EVERYTHING * that doesn't fit in our regular auctions! So you *WON'T* find any one-sheets, half-sheets, lobby cards, etc, but you *WILL* find pressbooks, trade ads, program books, magazines, presskits, etc, etc. *THIS SET OF AUCTIONS HAS A LOT OF REALLY COOL ITEMS *(some incredibly rare)* SO YOU WILL BE GLAD TO HAVE AN EXTRA WEEK TO LOOK AT IT*, because you really should look at *EVERY* item! I want to call your attention to three special aspects of this auction: 1) We have many cool bulk lots just as our old Sunday auctions did, but whereas those had 40 to 50 of them, these new once a month miscellaneous Sunday auctions will have 150 to 200 bulks in each one! So if you like getting a lot of items for one low, low price, you really need to check these out! 2) We were consigned a really nice collection of great vintage toys and movie-character related items (like glasses, watches, bath toys, etc) and most of these are from memorable movies of the 1970s and 1980s! We have listed around 50 of them in this week's Sunday auctions. 3) We auctioned a large collection of *MOVING PICTURE WORLD *exhibitor magazines from the 1910s, and they mostly auctioned for $20 to $100 each. * NOW*, we have been consigned a massive collection of bound volumes containing nearly every issue from 1910 to 1920, and those bound volumes are all in one *INCREDIBLE* lot, at the start of the listings! And we also have a remarkable bound volume of 1941/42 Paramount pressbooks, and it contains two of their very best movies ever, * THIS GUN FOR HIRE *and*SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS *! *But enough comments! *You will be amazed how many cool items are in this set of auctions, *and most amazingly of all *(as of this writing with a week to go) *75% OF THESE ITEMS ARE $5 EACH OR UNDER* (and 60% are $1 each or have no bid!). This may be a time for incredible deals (or absolute steals), *but you can't win if you don't bid, so go right now to http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/sort/4/15.html and start looking!* -- Bruce Hershenson and the other 26 members of the eMoviePoster.com team P.O. [MOPO] Why do so few women participate on MoPo?
I can't figure it out. We are a great fun loving bunch of guys, and yet so few women participate on MoPo, and when a few do, like Geraldine or Diana, they seem to invariably get in *LOTS *of fights, and judging by the reactions of most of the posters, they make much ado about nothing.
