Wow! I found a significant mistake that a major studio made! Paramount
Pictures said that this year was the 75th anniversary of their famous logo,
because it was first used in 1916. But I knew otherwise, and proved it was used
as early as August, 1914, so they were off by two years. Read about it Leonard
Maltin's fine site here:

Re: [MOPO] I found a significant mistake that a major studio made!

2011-12-23 Thread Dave Rosen
Ya know, bad math and typos aside, the fact that a movie studio has been around
for 100 years (or ALMOST 100 years) is pretty impressive. Not that studios
today are what they were then, but still. Is Paramount the oldest US studio, or
is it Universal? Seems to me Universal's been around since 1912.

  Zeev

It IS higher math, and my typo confused things more.

They started as the Paramount Program which was separate studios releasing
their product jointly, IN 1912. They didn't actually merge into a single real
studio until 1915.

So their true 100th Anniversary isn't for 3 more years. But they wanted to
celebrate NOW, so they made 2012 the 100th birthday, counting the three
Paramount Program years.

But in their press release, someone wrote that they didn't even use their
famous logo until 1916, in print or onscreen, and that is what was wrong, and
what I disproved!

On Fri, Dec 23, 2011 at 8:31 AM, Zeev Drach lobb...@rogers.com wrote:

1916, 1915, or 1914, the math still doesn’t work. 1915+75=1990. So what
gives?

Leonard Maltin talks about the 100th anniversary, but that still doesn’t
work. 1915+100=2015!

Am I misunderstanding the article or Bruce’s comment?

Re: [MOPO] FA- RARE UNRATED JAWS 27X41 One Sheet Spaceship Style Clouds E.T...

2011-10-24 Thread Dave Rosen
If Nick is a Canadian seller, then his shipping prices make sense, if he is
shipping Expedited. Canada Post is VERY expensive, especially for anything
shipped overseas.

Expedited Parcel, starting at about $62 is, believe it or not, the cheapest way
to ship overseas with a tracking number.

Shipping without a tracking number and with insurance only up to $100 (Small
Packet Air Mail) starts at $17 to Europe and is higher for other destinations.
Unfortunately, Canada Post has no other option between Small Packet and
Expedited for overseas shipping.

Speaking for myself, however, I, like Helmut, consistently UNDERcharge for
shipping, whether Small Packet or Expedited. I lose at least a couple of
buckets on every order but it's the cost of providing affordable, reasonably
priced shipping to my clients. The cost of doing business...

  Hello, Claude, Helmut and MOPO,

International shipping from the U.S. (and I presume from other countries) is
expensive. It often matches the value of a poster.
Yet a surprising portion of our business is now from International customers
and often for modestly priced items. If we sell something over $500, I try to
talk
the client into some kind of expedited shipping. Last winter standard
service to the UK was PAINFUL. Clients waited
  weeks to get posters.

I understand what Dan Rickard (that is nick darard isn't it) wants to
accomplish with his shipping arrangement. And if I were
buying something from him, his shipping terms would encourage me to buy more
than one item. Look at the total price if you can live
with it and bid if you want something he has.

He isn't really a dealer. But don't you, Dan, keep saying this is your last
load only to follow up with more?

Hi Claude,

you're of course right, $65 is his overseas rate, but it applies to
ANYTHING he sells, so that rate applies to an unbacked poster as well.

About my rates: For any folded poster I charge a 7 Euros (US-$9.75 at
today's rate) to any destination worldwide. This even includes a tracking
number and insurance.
I will ship a linenbacked onesheet (or any other rolled poster) to the US
for as low as EUR 18 ($25).

Needless to say, there ARE several more expensive ways I could ship, but
I'm extremely cautious to use the best opportunity for my CLIENTS. Also, unlike
many US sellers (and I do not mean the aforementioned seller here), I use
quality packing materials, which I BUY, I do not steal them the post office.

Not only do I not charge a 'handling fee' or a 'queuing at the post office
fee', with these rate, I even lose a considerable amount of money on shipping
costs every year.

Then again, I write this off to CUSTOMER SERVICE, after all I consider
myself a poster dealer, not a transport broker.

I hope this answers your question.

Best,

Helmut

Just out of curiosity -- What do you charge to ship to the USA?

  Hello all,

I just had a note from Robert Perry at Spotlight Displays that one of our
own has passed away. Susan Olsen was a very gifted restorer that I know many of
you had used for your collections as she would send the posters down to me for
framing afterwards.
Not sure if anyone else had posted something to the group about this, but I
did want to make you aware of it. She use to be a very active participant in
our conversations here on the MoPo group back in the day. Quite the fireball,
she always had very strong opinions and a quick wit. She made me laugh quite a
few times, raucously!! Sad news as she was only 52.

Bruce's two emails this week about the sad state of his auctions have really
yanked on the ol' heartstrings, and I think it's time the community pulls
together as a team and pitches in to help save his business. As we all know,
Bruce is far too modest to ever say a word about himself, but let me let you in
on a little secret:

Bruce is losing money on thousands of items a week!!

We already know from his testimony that he loses money on almost every
sub-$20 item he sells. In fact he has told us he doesn't even come close to
breaking even on those items. Then Tuesday he reminded us that around half of
all that we auction goes for $14 and under (which likely means a wackadoodle
60% or so sell under $20), and at that point over half his items were not even
$6 or more.

Now today, he's got almost half his items sitting at $3!?!?!

At that rate how much longer do you think he will be able to continue to
offer these auctions?
My worry now is that he is teetering so close to going under that we might
not even get to see his spectacular upcoming Halloween auction for which we've
been waiting all year.

So here's the plan. For just PENNIES a day, YOU can help save a movie poster
institution.
Every time you place a bid, just bid $1.00 more than you wanted to pay and
let Bruce know that extra dollar is for Bruce's Kids - you know, the other 25
members of the emovieposter team.
Probably the only reason Bruce is keeping his doors open is his commitment to
them, being responsible for .3% of the population of Howell County, MO.
It's a burden that he shouldn't have to bare alone, and with a little bit of
help and compassion, he wont have to any longer.

If everyone pitches in and does his or her part, we can all help Bruce
overcome these tragic results and maybe one day he can make money again.
If this doesn't work, we will all be staring straight in the face of nothing
but outrageous $14 buyer's premiums and very likely the end of movie poster
collecting as we know it (maybe even the end of the world). I don't know about
you, but I don't want to live in a horrible world like that, so I'm going over
to emovieposter right now and make some bids that I don't even want to make,
but I'm going to do it for Bruce's Kids!!

  What are you waiting for?!!

GET OUT AND BID TO SAVE BRUCE'S KIDS!!

Subject: [MOPO] FA: Looking for incredible deals on folded non-U.S. posters
non-U.S. lobby cards? We have 999 closing in 13 hours with lots of great
titles 50% are still $3 or under!

We have 999 folded non-U.S. posters (including many Australian, German, and
Mexican) non-U.S. lobby cards (mostly French, German, and Mexican) at auction
that are getting ready to close, and there are some excellent ones, but also
lots of inexpensive ones as well. There are just 13 hours to go before they
start to end TONIGHT Thursday, October 6th.

I just looked over the current prices on these just about to end items, and
the prices on many of them are really hard to believe! With just 13 hours to
go, the 999 folded non-U.S. posters non-U.S. lobby cards include a
wackadoodle 127 that have no bid at all, 381 that are still languishing at just
$1 each or have no bid, and a Mt. Everest-like 496 that are $3 each or under!
THAT'S RIGHT, 12% OF THESE ITEMS HAVE NO BID AT ALL, JUST UNDER 40% ARE
CURRENTLY $1 EACH OR HAVE NO BID AND JUST UNDER 50% OF THE ITEMS ARE CURRENTLY
$3 EACH OR UNDER!)!

THIS IS A SET OF AUCTIONS WHERE WE LIST EVERYTHING FOLDED NON-U.S. POSTERS
AND NON U.S. LOBBY CARDS, AND (as of right now, with just 13 hours to go) MOST
OF IT IS BASICALLY BEING GIVEN AWAY! When you add in that you can get 13 of
our books simply for buying any 20 items, then it makes sense to bid on any 20
items to get those plus the books (and our supplies of the books is lower than
ever, so this will be one of the last chances to be able to get them with all
one dollar or two dollar items!).

Of course, once you get OVER just $3, you start hitting lots and lots of
better titles, but an awful lot of those are currently at VERY reasonable
prices, far under what some of them have sold for in the past (the ones we can
find any record of selling in the past!) including:
5g073 LA ADULTERA Mexican poster '56 sexy artwork of bad girl adulteress
Silvia Pinal by Josep Renau
5g409 BENEATH THE 12-MILE REEF Aust daybill '53 cool stone litho of scuba

Subject: [MOPO] eBay worries..

Hey guys...

I've put several posters up on eBay which I KNOW are worth a bundle

Although I know they are worth more, I started the bidding at about £40.00
GBP.

Now they HAVE attracted attention. I have received several private
messages

asking to sell quick and end the auction (which I have respectfully
declined) and the top two currently have a lot of watchers... however
they

have yet to attract a single bid.

My worry is that they will end up going for WAY under their selling price
due to the unpredictability of the eBay system.

Although it would protect my valuable posters, I was told that putting
reserves on posters can scare bidders away.

I'm even tempted to cancel the auction at the weekend, rather than lose my
valuable items to auction tactics. (I'm not being greedy... I just don't
want to be ripped off)

Please give me some advice on this, as I'm NOT a dealer, but times are
hard

and I need these posters to reach at least their average value!

Cheers

  Hey Folks

we have yet another clown on fleabay trying to scam unknowing bidders into
buying poster forgey items

in this case, they are postcard-sized items purported to be from the Strand
Theatre in upstate New York

The seller, Hadleyhints is a total clown and though I can't say with
certainty that he is the source of the printings, he is the source of the
ones I bought on ebay last week

  his completed listings

http://www.ebay.com/csc/hadleyhints/m.html?rt=ncLH_Complete=1_fln=1_ipg=25_trksid=p3911.c0.m283

I won the 4 for $1 each and lost the 5th one at $18

obviously, I was buying them to look at them and of course, if they were real
it was going to be a sweet buy.
But when they got here it took all of 30 seconds to see they were inkjet
reproductions clearly made to deceive

here are links direct to each auction

I have already sent 2 off to Grey Smith and I sent 2 to Sean for obvious
reasons (so they know what's going on out there and can see for themselves) and
then I'll be sending them off to Todd Spoor to send to his lab to test the
paper, but rest assured, they are all absolutely forgeries and when they are
returned to me, I will be posting hi-res images front +back as well as close-up
detail shots.

If the person who bought the 5th one is a Forum member, you know what you
just got

but it gets even worse.. the seller himself is a complete donkey!!
his shipping is listed as $6, but seeing as he said he has more
(Frankenstein, Dracula, King Kong) I wanted to get my cards fast so I could
examine them for authenticity (he claimed in a response to a request that they
are 100% authentic) so I paid him $24 to ship via Express Mail
well he only sent them by Priority Mail at $6 and so I told him I wanted my
$18 overpayment refunded. Here was his response:

The auction was for 1 card for $1 + shipping of $6 priorty shipping. You won
4 of those auctions thats $4 + the shipping cost on each auction of $6 + $24.
As soon as the auction ended I sent you a invoice of the amount above and thats
what you sent.
I know you asked for express shipping and I did not get back to you thats my
fault.

so not only should you be looking out for these forgeries, you obviously also
need to be looking out for him
Of course, a Paypal claim has been filed and Negative Feedback he will get

  Thanks for reading
  Rich

Couple of odd experiences with the mail the last couple of weeks. On the good
side: I've had several packages get here (Ontario, Canada) from the US
super-fast, within four days. The average is normally two weeks. Even mail

On the bad side: I had an expensive item disappear between here and a buyer in

while people prefer the US posters when the images are the same. generally
speaking during the past 20 years, International styles have different art and
frequently even better art than the US posters

some obvious examples are the Ferris Buehler posters which the Intl is way
better, the Monsters Inc Intl I sold last week which many consider to have
superior art, Run Lola Run where the Intl style is better than the crappy US
poster and the Harry Potter poster that ends today, which doesn't have better
art but is totally different from US paper.

generally speaking, International 1sheets are much scarcer than regular US
1sheets and that difference makes the internationals more valuable on popular
titles

As far as I can see, these runs frequently look as if they must come
contemporaneously from the same printer, so I'd be interested to know if
sellers and buyers significantly favour/value Domestic Advance over
International.

Re: [MOPO] If anyone is interested, my unphotogenic mug is on pawn stars tonight

2011-07-26 Thread Dave Rosen
Every reality show is painfully and obviously staged, even the good ones. I
know people who work in production on shows like this and quite often when one
of the regulars is saying something pithy into the camera in the interview
segments, they are in fact repeating back to the camera word-for-word scripted
lines that a production assistant has just read out loud to them. It's how the
game is played. Most viewers don't know or care.

That said, I do find the current wave of collectibles shows entertaining.
Sometimes intentionally entertaining but often, given some of the crazy
appraisals, unintentionally entertaining. Hilarious, even.

It was great, Steve, and I predict a new show biz career for you!

But there seemed to be a lack of reality in the segment, and just about every
part of it looked painfully and obviously staged.

But brilliant on your part to assemble a collection of pawn related items!

There have been quite a few, but the one that comes immediately to mind is
Charade. When I re-watched it a few months ago I found the whole production

MoPo has been quiet of late, so I thought I would ask a question that has
been on my mind of late, as I have been re-watching some classic and not so
classic movies.

I find some of them are about as great as I remembered them, but others seem
to have changed drastically (or maybe it is I who have changed) because some
are barely watchable at all!

So my question is, are there movies you once thought classic that you later
re-watched and found they are not nearly as good as you had once thought?

Re: [MOPO] A possible conversation starter

2011-06-28 Thread Dave Rosen
Jack Lemmon was up for the Tom Ewell role in Seven Year Itch and it's a shame
he didn't get it because he'd have been perfect.

About the dress: It's not of interest because of the movie but because of the
uber-famous still of Marilyn over the subway grate. I daresay millions (maybe
billions) more people have seen that photo than ever saw the movie. It's come
to represent everything that was Marilyn Monroe. One of the few times the
over-used word iconic really applies...

Well, The Seven Year Itch was mid-50s rather than late-60s.
To be honest, last time I saw that film (admittedly 5 years ago) I
quite enjoyed it. The main problem for me was that all the available versions
in the UK were horribly panned scanned with a shocking image quality. That
said, Tom Ewell's performance was definitely over-ripe and he can't carry a
film. He always struck me as being very much a supporting player in the Gig
Young / Ray Walston mode who rather lucked out by being over-promoted to male
lead.
Certainly there are better Wilder films and a better Wilder/Monroe film.
Cheers
Neil
PS Good thread.

It seems to me it is the sexy films of the late 1960s that have aged
the worst of all. They are not really sexy by today's standards, and they are
so massively dated in their values that I would say most of them are almost
completely unwatchable (although there are of course exceptions).

For example, I know that dress is worth millions, but have any of you
tried WATCHING The Seven Year Itch lately? Let me know what you thought of it!

In contrast, every time I see it (must be a dozen

Re: [MOPO] OT: Movie Poster Father's Day card

She is awesome. For the past six months she's been living in Marseille, turning
out posters and books, living on cigarettes, cafe au lait and trips out into
the Provencal countryside to draw and paint. She's my hero (except for the
smoking part).

2011-06-19 Thread Dave Rosen
Famous provenance AND proximity, in that if these posters were offered in an
auction that had not already attracted the attention of people with very, very
deep pockets they would not have fetched these prices.

I mean what's a measly seven grand for a Seven Year Itch insert when you're
already throwing MILLIONS at THE dress from THE scene in the movie?

As for the small number of movie posters that were included in this auction,
they did incredibly well, here are some examples, all of these are only hammer
prices before buyers commission is added:
  VIRGIN QUEEN 3 SHEET 1900
  SEVEN YEAR ITCH INSERT 7000
THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS INSERT 7000
  THE EGYPTIAN THREE SHEET 2000
  DESIREE SIX SHEET 3250
This is a case where this famous provenance radically affected the poster
prices.

Hi Tom,
Don't know whether you've seen, but you can still get a free download of
the catalogue from this page:-

http://www.profilesinhistory.com/debbie-reynolds-auction/debbie-reynolds-the-auction
Looks like the paper version sold out.

I see from the preface that the VA Museum in London had previously been in
negotiations to borrow some of the collection for an exhibition next year.
Hopefully some of the new owners will see fit to loan them out both here and
elsewhere, so the public can get to see at least part of the collection as
Debbie R intended.

  Rich,
Didn't Debbie R manage to set up a museum in your neck of the woods for a few
years, before it went bust? Unfortunately, the 1st time I went to Vegas the
museum didn't exist yet, and by the 2nd time it had closed down. Just my luck.
(Makes me wonder how the Liberace museum managed to last so long tho.) I too am
amazed at how often Hollywood neglects its own history. But I guess it's a
similar story around the world, with a few notable exceptions like Scorcese's
preservation efforts and that German film museum initiative that Cory forwarded
the other day.

I know this won't affect most of you, but I just thought members should know
there is a post office strike looming in Canada. The union has given midnight

Fortunately, I live close enough to the US that I can switch to driving across
the border and shipping through the USPS but others may not have that option.

Re: [MOPO] Beau Geste 1939

2011-05-14 Thread Dave Rosen
I saw this movie on TV when I was about 8 or 9 and have never forgotten it.
Of course, back then I had no idea who the actors were (though they were
familiar from many another movie seen on TV), I just loved the movie. But
what a cast! Gary Cooper, Ray Milland, Robert Preston, Brian Donlevy, Susan
Hayward. Fantastic!

Now I'll have to find a copy and watch it again!

watched this movie, but I'd forgotten how good it was.

William Wellman aka Wild Bill was one hot director and Brian Donlevy is
so over the top sometimes.

You should watch it.. You'll like it.. I PROMISE YOU!

  I loved this part Helmut:

eBay's transaction team will be conducting two tests to our site on bid
increments. There was analysis done where in 22% of auctions, where there was
proxy bid placed, the final selling price of the item did not max out the proxy
bid. There will be two variants running and two control groups. The first
variant test will increment the bid increment by 2x the current increment and
the second test variant will increase the bid amount by 3x the current
increment.

between postal fees going up, ebay fees slapping sellers, and large bid
increments.. where's the love?

I've noticed a lot less interesting poster material on Ebay these days, to
the point I only look every other week or so. I'm tired of the same old over
priced stuff week after week.

If one of the MOPO members posts that they have listings, I'll look at those.
But mainly I've been buying from Rich, HA, and Bruce.

With all the talk of Ebay sucking, has anyone tried other auction sites like
Ebid?

I have never had a reason to ask Benito why he does whatever he does.
largely because I don't have time for silly issues.

few things I would complain about would change - people running red lights
or cutting cars off, panhandlers who tell you their tale of woe in
supermarket parking lots on either side of town 2 weeks apart acting as if
they never saw you before and just got to Vegas last night, birthers who
think President Obama is a Manchurian Candidate born in Kenya.. you know,
stupid things like that

it leaves my time free to do the things I like. collect posters, eat
sushi, date cocktail waitresses and list auctions so that people can have
fun.. you know, the important things in life!!

have to say, it is annoying how he floods both US and the

i wonder why he doesnt ever do auction style?

anybody know or ever ask him?
