Re: [MOPO] I found a significant mistake that a major studio made!
Ya know, bad math and typos aside, the fact that a movie studio has been around for 100 years (or ALMOST 100 years) is pretty impressive. Not that studios today are what they were then, but still. Is Paramount the oldest US studio, or is it Universal? Seems to me Universal's been around since 1912. Dave - Original Message - From: Bruce Hershenson To: MoPo-L@LISTSERV.AMERICAN.EDU Sent: Friday, December 23, 2011 9:38 AM Subject: Re: [MOPO] I found a significant mistake that a major studio made! Zeev It IS higher math, and my typo confused things more. They started as the Paramount Program which was separate studios releasing their product jointly, IN 1912. They didn't actually merge into a single real studio until 1915. So their true 100th Anniversary isn't for 3 more years. But they wanted to celebrate NOW, so they made 2012 the 100th birthday, counting the three Paramount Program years. But in their press release, someone wrote that they didn't even use their famous logo until 1916, in print or onscreen, and that is what was wrong, and what I disproved! On Fri, Dec 23, 2011 at 8:31 AM, Zeev Drach lobb...@rogers.com wrote: 1916, 1915, or 1914, the math still doesn’t work. 1915+75=1990. So what gives? Leonard Maltin talks about the 100th anniversary, but that still doesn’t work. 1915+100=2015! Am I misunderstanding the article or Bruce’s comment? Re: [MOPO] FA- RARE UNRATED JAWS 27X41 One Sheet Spaceship Style Clouds E.T...
If Nick is a Canadian seller, then his shipping prices make sense, if he is shipping Expedited. Canada Post is VERY expensive, especially for anything shipped overseas. Expedited Parcel, starting at about $62 is, believe it or not, the cheapest way to ship overseas with a tracking number. Shipping without a tracking number and with insurance only up to $100 (Small Packet Air Mail) starts at $17 to Europe and is higher for other destinations. Unfortunately, Canada Post has no other option between Small Packet and Expedited for overseas shipping. Speaking for myself, however, I, like Helmut, consistently UNDERcharge for shipping, whether Small Packet or Expedited. I lose at least a couple of buckets on every order but it's the cost of providing affordable, reasonably priced shipping to my clients. The cost of doing business... Hello, Claude, Helmut and MOPO, International shipping from the U.S. (and I presume from other countries) is expensive. It often matches the value of a poster. Yet a surprising portion of our business is now from International customers and often for modestly priced items. If we sell something over $500, I try to talk the client into some kind of expedited shipping. Last winter standard service to the UK was PAINFUL. Clients waited weeks to get posters. I understand what Dan Rickard (that is nick darard isn't it) wants to accomplish with his shipping arrangement. And if I were buying something from him, his shipping terms would encourage me to buy more than one item. Look at the total price if you can live with it and bid if you want something he has. He isn't really a dealer. But don't you, Dan, keep saying this is your last load only to follow up with more? Kirby Kirby McDaniel MovieArt Original Film Posters P.O. I will ship a linenbacked onesheet (or any other rolled poster) to the US for as low as EUR 18 ($25). Needless to say, there ARE several more expensive ways I could ship, but I'm extremely cautious to use the best opportunity for my CLIENTS. Also, unlike many US sellers (and I do not mean the aforementioned seller here), I use quality packing materials, which I BUY, I do not steal them the post office. Not only do I not charge a 'handling fee' or a 'queuing at the post office fee', with these rate, I even lose a considerable amount of money on shipping costs every year. Re: [MOPO] Do it For Bruce's Kids!!
Funny. D. - Original Message - From: Sean Linkenback To: MoPo-L@LISTSERV.AMERICAN.EDU Sent: Thursday, October 06, 2011 2:35 PM Subject: [MOPO] Do it For Bruce's Kids!! Bruce's two emails this week about the sad state of his auctions have really yanked on the ol' heartstrings, and I think it's time the community pulls together as a team and pitches in to help save his business. As we all know, Bruce is far too modest to ever say a word about himself, but let me let you in on a little secret: Bruce is losing money on thousands of items a week!! We already know from his testimony that he loses money on almost every sub-$20 item he sells. In fact he has told us he doesn't even come close to breaking even on those items. Then Tuesday he reminded us that around half of all that we auction goes for $14 and under (which likely means a wackadoodle 60% or so sell under $20), and at that point over half his items were not even $6 or more. Now today, he's got almost half his items sitting at $3!?!?! At that rate how much longer do you think he will be able to continue to offer these auctions? My worry now is that he is teetering so close to going under that we might not even get to see his spectacular upcoming Halloween auction for which we've been waiting all year. So here's the plan. For just PENNIES a day, YOU can help save a movie poster institution. Every time you place a bid, just bid $1.00 more than you wanted to pay and let Bruce know that extra dollar is for Bruce's Kids - you know, the other 25 members of the emovieposter team. Probably the only reason Bruce is keeping his doors open is his commitment to them, being responsible for .3% of the population of Howell County, MO. It's a burden that he shouldn't have to bare alone, and with a little bit of help and compassion, he wont have to any longer. If everyone pitches in and does his or her part, we can all help Bruce overcome these tragic results and maybe one day he can make money again. If this doesn't work, we will all be staring straight in the face of nothing but outrageous $14 buyer's premiums and very likely the end of movie poster collecting as we know it (maybe even the end of the world). I don't know about you, but I don't want to live in a horrible world like that, so I'm going over to emovieposter right now and make some bids that I don't even want to make, but I'm going to do it for Bruce's Kids!! What are you waiting for?!! GET OUT AND BID TO SAVE BRUCE'S KIDS!! - Original Message - From: Bruce Hershenson To: MoPo-L@LISTSERV.AMERICAN.EDU Sent: Thursday, October 06, 2011 6:03 AM Subject: [MOPO] FA: Looking for incredible deals on folded non-U.S. posters non-U.S. lobby cards? We have 999 closing in 13 hours with lots of great titles 50% are still $3 or under! We have 999 folded non-U.S. posters (including many Australian, German, and Mexican) non-U.S. lobby cards (mostly French, German, and Mexican) at auction that are getting ready to close, and there are some excellent ones, but also lots of inexpensive ones as well. There are just 13 hours to go before they start to end TONIGHT Thursday, October 6th. I just looked over the current prices on these just about to end items, and the prices on many of them are really hard to believe! With just 13 hours to go, the 999 folded non-U.S. posters non-U.S. lobby cards include a wackadoodle 127 that have no bid at all, 381 that are still languishing at just $1 each or have no bid, and a Mt. Everest-like 496 that are $3 each or under! THAT'S RIGHT, 12% OF THESE ITEMS HAVE NO BID AT ALL, JUST UNDER 40% ARE CURRENTLY $1 EACH OR HAVE NO BID AND JUST UNDER 50% OF THE ITEMS ARE CURRENTLY $3 EACH OR UNDER!)! THIS IS A SET OF AUCTIONS WHERE WE LIST EVERYTHING FOLDED NON-U.S. POSTERS AND NON U.S. LOBBY CARDS, AND (as of right now, with just 13 hours to go) MOST OF IT IS BASICALLY BEING GIVEN AWAY! When you add in that you can get 13 of our books simply for buying any 20 items, then it makes sense to bid on any 20 items to get those plus the books (and our supplies of the books is lower than ever, so this will be one of the last chances to be able to get them with all one dollar or two dollar items!). Of course, once you get OVER just $3, you start hitting lots and lots of better titles, but an awful lot of those are currently at VERY reasonable prices, far under what some of them have sold for in the past (the ones we can find any record of selling in the past!) including: 5g073 LA ADULTERA Mexican poster '56 sexy artwork of bad girl adulteress Silvia Pinal by Josep Renau 5g409 BENEATH THE 12-MILE REEF Aust daybill '53 cool stone litho of scuba diver fighting octopus! 5g591 REMEMBER PEARL HARBOR Aust daybill '42 different stone litho of Don Red Barry Fay McKenzie! 5g557 MAD MAX Aust daybill '79 Mel Gibson, George Miller

Annie: Post links to your auctions here. That might help to get you some more bidders. Hey guys... I've put several posters up on eBay which I KNOW are worth a bundle Although I know they are worth more, I started the bidding at about £40.00 GBP. Now they HAVE attracted attention. I have received several private messages asking to sell quick and end the auction (which I have respectfully declined) and the top two currently have a lot of watchers... however they have yet to attract a single bid. My worry is that they will end up going for WAY under their selling price due to the unpredictability of the eBay system. Although it would protect my valuable posters, I was told that putting reserves on posters can scare bidders away. I'm even tempted to cancel the auction at the weekend, rather than lose my valuable items to auction tactics. (I'm not being greedy... I just don't want to be ripped off) Please give me some advice on this, as I'm NOT a dealer, but times are hard and I need these posters to reach at least their average value! If the person who bought the 5th one is a Forum member, you know what you just got but it gets even worse.. the seller himself is a complete donkey!! his shipping is listed as $6, but seeing as he said he has more (Frankenstein, Dracula, King Kong) I wanted to get my cards fast so I could examine them for authenticity (he claimed in a response to a request that they are 100% authentic) so I paid him $24 to ship via Express Mail well he only sent them by Priority Mail at $6 and so I told him I wanted my $18 overpayment refunded. Here was his response: The auction was for 1 card for $1 + shipping of $6 priorty shipping. You won 4 of those auctions thats $4 + the shipping cost on each auction of $6 + $24. As soon as the auction ended I sent you a invoice of the amount above and thats what you sent. I know you asked for express shipping and I did not get back to you thats my fault. so not only should you be looking out for these forgeries, you obviously also need to be looking out for him Of course, a Paypal claim has been filed and Negative Feedback he will get Thanks for reading Rich Visit the MoPo Mailing List Web Site at www.filmfan.com ___ How to UNSUBSCRIBE from the MoPo Mailing List Send a message addressed to: lists...@listserv.american.edu In the BODY of your message type: SIGNOFF MOPO-L The author of this message is solely responsible for its content. Re: [MOPO] If anyone is interested, my unphotogenic mug is on pawn stars tonight
Every reality show is painfully and obviously staged, even the good ones. I know people who work in production on shows like this and quite often when one of the regulars is saying something pithy into the camera in the interview segments, they are in fact repeating back to the camera word-for-word scripted lines that a production assistant has just read out loud to them. It's how the game is played. Most viewers don't know or care. That said, I do find the current wave of collectibles shows entertaining. Sometimes intentionally entertaining but often, given some of the crazy appraisals, unintentionally entertaining. Hilarious, even. Re: [MOPO] A possible conversation starter
There have been quite a few, but the one that comes immediately to mind is Charade. When I re-watched it a few months ago I found the whole production cheap-looking and the acting wooden, to say the least. (Matter of fact, I can say the same for a lot of movies from the mid-sixties.) The best thing about it was the theme music. Dave - Original Message - From: Bruce Hershenson To: MoPo-L@LISTSERV.AMERICAN.EDU Sent: Tuesday, June 28, 2011 8:35 AM Subject: [MOPO] A possible conversation starter MoPo has been quiet of late, so I thought I would ask a question that has been on my mind of late, as I have been re-watching some classic and not so classic movies. I find some of them are about as great as I remembered them, but others seem to have changed drastically (or maybe it is I who have changed) because some are barely watchable at all! Re: [MOPO] A possible conversation starter
Jack Lemmon was up for the Tom Ewell role in Seven Year Itch and it's a shame he didn't get it because he'd have been perfect. About the dress: It's not of interest because of the movie but because of the uber-famous still of Marilyn over the subway grate. I daresay millions (maybe billions) more people have seen that photo than ever saw the movie. It's come to represent everything that was Marilyn Monroe. One of the few times the over-used word iconic really applies... Dave - Original Message - From: Neil Jaworski To: MoPo-L@LISTSERV.AMERICAN.EDU Sent: Tuesday, June 28, 2011 6:10 PM Subject: Re: [MOPO] A possible conversation starter Well, The Seven Year Itch was mid-50s rather than late-60s. To be honest, last time I saw that film (admittedly 5 years ago) I quite enjoyed it. The main problem for me was that all the available versions in the UK were horribly panned scanned with a shocking image quality. That said, Tom Ewell's performance was definitely over-ripe and he can't carry a film. He always struck me as being very much a supporting player in the Gig Young / Ray Walston mode who rather lucked out by being over-promoted to male lead. Certainly there are better Wilder films and a better Wilder/Monroe film. I saw this movie on TV when I was about 8 or 9 and have never forgotten it. Of course, back then I had no idea who the actors were (though they were familiar from many another movie seen on TV), I just loved the movie. But what a cast! Gary Cooper, Ray Milland, Robert Preston, Brian Donlevy, Susan Hayward. Fantastic! Now I'll have to find a copy and watch it again!
