Re. Beanie Babies: I remember an ebay listing for a bulk lot of Beanie Babies
going viral at some point. That must‘ve been at the height of BB craze: The guy
had simply photographed the lot, and his description read something like:
‚These belonged to my wife. Thankfully she‘s gone, and now these have to go as
well. And the money they bring will be spent on TOOLS and BEER.‘ With all the
fakes out there, people were desperate to ‚authenticate‘ what he had, but he
absolutely refused, stating things like‚ having better things to do than look
some stuffed critters in the ass‘. Upon this, they accused him of being a
scammer and things went crazy. At some point, the story went viral, ending up
in social media and if I remember correctly, it even showed up on TV. The ebay
screenshot I saw had somewhat over a million views.

Re. Bruce/ Retirement: Being self-employed, I have obviously pondered over
eventual retirement as well. At this point, I don‘t really see it happen for
myself and the current plan is to work until I drop dead at my desk.

Frankly, I can‘t see Bruce going into retirement. All the work aside, our job
is simply TOO MUCH FUN to ever give it up.

Needless to say, I am totally stressed out most of the time, but I still keep
finding AMAZING posters I have never seen before. (A number of them will be
published in my next update this month.) This alone makes up for a lot of the
daily aggravation. And of course the money is pretty good as well.
A good portion of my sales (and my profits) comes from low-end items, but
looking forward, I would certainly like to downsize that part of my inventory
step by step. On the other hand, the percentage on the low-end material is so
much higher, of course...

My guess is that it would be very hard to find the right person. You have done
an incredible job in building the business over the years. Raising the minimum
value might help but estimating the value is subjective as reflected in some of
the price fluctuations that have been achieved. There are often surprises with
some posters making way more than anyone would have thought.

You have been selling a lot of bulk lots in recent times but it must surely be
a lot of work and time to photograph and list a load of one sheets or lobby
cards. Whereas, photographing and listing a $20.00 poster would be minimal in
terms of time spent. Just wondering whether it might be worth reducing the bulk
lots rather than raising the minimum value.

Anyway, I hope you continue running the business for many years to come in
whatever form you choose.

Regards

John

John

Good question! If the right person came along, I would take them in as a
partner tomorrow. I know that after a transition period of a few years, the
business would be fine with that "right person" taking over for me.

But IS there that right person? That is hard to say. I long thought Phil Wages
was headed in that direction, but he had his own dream (running a brewery) and
now he has fulfilled that dream!

As I have said before, my kids are not interested; Maybe someday, but who knows?

These days, my thinking has moved in another direction. Why not slow down,
rather than stop?

My only gripe about the business is that it takes up too much of my time AND I
spend far too much of that time auctioning low value items that are readily
available elsewhere, or are rare items no one is looking for.

I see myself as being able to "kill both birds with one stone" by continuing to
up the quality of what I auction. Currently I insist on $20+ items for single
auctions. What if I slowly raise that to $30., then $40 and then $50?

Yes, I will surely auction fewer items, but that would free a lot of my time.
Maybe I would have two auctions every four weeks instead of three. Or maybe I
would go back to limiting each auction to 999 items.

Even if I ultimately ran ONE auction every four weeks. surely that would be
better than NO eMoviePoster.com!

Thoughts (from John. or anyone else, other than the haters)?

2021-12-29 Thread Greg Douglass

Yes, it was a great auction. I had my eye on a gorgeous stone litho from CABARET (the 1927 version). I set a price ceiling on it but it got plowed through during one of those five minute hand-wringing sessions.. After some choice language, I took a peek over to (gasp!) Ebay. While I will never, ever sell on that pit of greed again, one CAN find bargains. I found a GODZILLA one sheet for $1500, bit my tongue, called my restorer, and crossed another piece off my bucket list.

Generally, though, I spend my bucks with Bruce.

I drooled over Anna Mae Wong too. Gorgeous. As collectors age, I think we're going to see more high-end gems come up at auction. My son wouldn't have a clue as to what to do with my collectionactually, he will, because I've got the cream of the crop listed and Bruce's number on the list. But it's like, "Dad,couldn't you have collected baseball cards?"

2005-12-18 Thread Alan Heimann
I really wonder how much of a bargain these posters are...certainly from
the point of view of obtaining a poster you want, often linenbacked, no
buyers premium and no shipping charges?..makes bruce's auctions
very attractive ..for posters like cat people..perhaps this copy had
more
restoration than would attract a $1 price or perhaps at this time of
year people need money for other gifts...but i think we get lulled to
easily
into thinking that because some of these titles like cat people or
forbidden planet or breakfast at tiffanys have achieved very high prices
at
certain auctions that this will be the norm..I think some of these
bargain
prices are realistic of what these posters are worth...i guess the litmus
test might be put the poster on ebay a few months from now and set the
opening bid at the bargain price...and see what happens ...Holiday
greetings to all. Alan

[MOPO] Bruce's auction results

2005-12-17 Thread Richard Halegua Comic Art

well Bruce's day one is over I have to say, that there were lots of
surprises some incredible bargains.

one bargain I was lucky to win was the Orphee french 1 panel.. This
is one of my top ten films and I always watch it with a new
girlfriend . I was shocked that I was able to achieve this poster for
a paltry $515 !! This poster sold for over $2000 at Christies 10
years ago is fairly rare.. I was willing to pay much more for it
was lucky to score a Some Like it Hot 1 sh for the bargain price of
$716 with the extra cash I didnt spend on Orphee

there was of course a wonderful supply of Universal horror and I was
almost shocked that Cat People sold for a mere $.00 which is a
sharp contrast to the $8000-12000 achieved in other houses like
Heritage in the past year. I was also shocked that Forbidden Planet
sold for a paltry $5866.99 .. hey Lieberman, were you on that??? What
about the Pulp Fiction advance for $390 or the Forbidden Planet
wc for $797..

I'm only looking at the results now, but I can tell that I wish I had
$20-30k to spend.. I coulda had some real fun.

[MOPO] Bruce's auction - discounts

2005-03-24 Thread Henry Mazel
The one sheet of Iron Duke (1934) starring George Arliss went for $192 in Bruce's auction. I have a mint half sheet of the same title, a much more pleasing poster. It is stone cold mint, never folded and a sight to behold.

PLUS - I even have a better title of Arliss -CARDINAL RICHELEAU also 1934. Also mint, never folded, and a wonder to behold. Crisp, clean, as though it was just off the press (both half sheets).

$425.00 for the pair. JPGs are available, Some wiggle room if you have something I might be interested in. You really might one to look at the JPGs on these. The HS are sensational.

[MOPO] Bruce's auction and Belgians

2005-03-16 Thread Henry Mazel
Kudos to Bruce. I emailed him yesterday regarding the dating of some of his Belgians, particularly Double Indemnity. Allied films were not screened in occupied Belgium, so the 1944 date was inaccurate, although it is the first Belgian release.

To his credit, Bruce wrote back and indicated he's added a footnote to the Auction regarding the date issue. That's a touch of class.
