I was very much "in" Bowie for three months or so when i was 16,17.
Very much in the Station To Staion - Low period. Favorite track
probably Heroes or Station To Station on live album "Stage". My
interest waned when I discovered rockabilly and punk. Rediscovered him
- if that's at all possible - lately when I got more into the sixties.

Loved him as Colin in Into The Night, very much a guilty pleasure.

Nothing very original from me.
Song: Heroes. Normally I'd laugh at lyrics like "I wish you could
swim.like dolphins can swim." But it just works.
Having said that, I've just heard Life On Mars on the radio. That's pretty
damn good too isn't it?
Film: The Man Who Fell To Earth. The first time I watched it, it *really*
unsettled me, partly because I didn't know what the hell was going on most
of the time, but also because I couldn't predict how Bowie's character
would behave, especially in the gun scene. The second time I watched it, it
started to make sense. I'm a bit of a sucker for Nic Roeg's non-linear
cross-cutting. Not exactly a cheery night's viewing with the family, but it's
one
of those films that becomes more coherent the more I see it. Or more
likely it's a case of me becoming less coherent.

Too many to list but I will say that he kept progressing and growing and never
became tired or stagnant. I real artist and great performer. I came across an
interesting factoid yesterday. Evidently the music from the tune "My Way" that
Sinatra made famous was taken from a french tune called "Comme d'habitude"
which was quite a hit in 1967. The song's publisher thought it might be an
English hit as well "So he called up a friend in Denmark Street, London's Tin
Pan Alley, who farmed it out to a jobbing songwriter who was hanging round the
office - a young chap called David Bowie. And so David Bowie wound up writing
the first English lyric for "My Way". Even weirder, he wrote it for an
entertainer he greatly admired, one of Britain's biggest stars of the time -
Anthony Newley. The story goes on to explain that Bowie tailored it to Newley's
"maudlin sub-Pagliacci tears-of-a-clown persona" and it was later rewritten by
Paul Anka. But it does make Bowie the first to pen lyrics to the famous tune.
Pretty cool.
Rest in peace DB.

Too many to list, and many come with amazing videos that I have just
been working my way through

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D67kmFzSh_o=RDD67kmFzSh_o

A very talented man, many people don't know that Bowie also was a
producer (at the age of 25) on an album of another music hero of mine,
Lou Reed, and his amazing album Transformer (1972) and if you don't know
then listen carefully you can hear Bowie singing in the background on
the song Satellite of Love towards the end (as a back-up singer).

Favourite song for me is Young Americans. I was hitchhiking across the
country in the summer of '75 and it was on the radio of every car I got
into. It became part of the soundtrack of that summer's adventure.

Re: [MOPO] What's your favourite Bowie Song and or film?

2016-01-12 Thread Greg Douglass
As some of you know, I'm a professional musician, one who came up in the
Sixties and experienced the amazing musical and cultural upheaval that period
cultivated. I've watched as many of my heroes and, without name dropping...Paul
McCartney told me I must NEVER name drop..., my friends have inevitably reached
the last stop on the world tour. I never knew Bowie, outside of a chance
encounter in Central Park. He was on a bench, disguised; I recognized him by
his mismatched eyes. I respected his moment of well-deserved privacy and walked
back to my hotel room. I also worked for a few months with the bassist who
played on the "Let's Dance" album who had nothing but great things to say about
Bowie. (And not-so-good things to say about Rod Stewart. Meow!)
I thought I was inoculated to obituaries at this point until my wife played the
Bing Crosby/David Bowie rendition of "Little Drummer Boy". I lost it. A
remarkable talent who was brave enough to push the boundaries and take huge
chances. I don't believe in heaven or hell but I'm going to learn the guitar
part to "Fame" just in case. I 'm going to need some gigs in the afterlife
should it exist.
R.I.P., David.

All the Young Dudes, written by Bowie, on the album by Mott the Hoople, I
think he played sax.

Wow. I never heard his duet with Bing Crosby. My babysitter used to listen to
him so his beautiful voice was imbedded in my brain.

I loved him in THE DARK CRYSTAL and that's what I most remember from my
childhood of him.

Re: [MOPO] What's your favourite Bowie Song and or film?

2016-01-11 Thread Phillip Ayling
Sue,

This brings back such I childhood memory. I too remember him singing Little
Drummer Boy with Bing Crosby and it was really great. They were many
generations apart yet it was so interesting. I remember too, the melancholy
attached to it. The show became an unexpected tribute to Bing Crosby as his
Christmas Special had been pre-taped in London and in the intervening time
Bing Crosby had died while finishing a golf game in Spain, I think. Yes that
was a cool childhood memory; from a time when there was only one TV in the
houseand my parents of course watched Bing Crosby and our "Ziggy Stardust"
was there singing with him.
