Re: [MOPO] 7,500 and adding more bidders everyday!

2010-08-21 Thread Glenn Taranto
Bruce,

Let's face it. Regardless of eBay's practices it was only a matter of time that
you'd see it would be in your best interest to run as fast as you could from
eBay and start your own site.

You've been ahead of the curve from the beginning of the movie poster auction
phenomenon and continue to set the standard by which paper is graded, fees are
paid and number of items auctioned.

By now if people don't know you they don't collect movie paper. I think you
were well to get rid of eBay and make your own mark in internet history.

My 2 cents -

We recently added our 7,500th registered bidder! We have more movie paper
bidders than ANY other auction site, and our results prove that.

It has been suggested that we auction more movie paper items per week (actual
auctions, not fixed price sales masquerading as auctions) than the entire eBay
site!

Of course, had the suits who run eBay not been so insanely greedy and
endlessly raised fees, we would likely still be selling there, and eBay might
well be stronger than ever.

Ebay is not the only one in the world insanely greedy. All one has to
do is go to ebay, search movie posters and sort by highest price first.
You will get page after page of insaane prices. These prices do not
help the movie poster collecting world or ebay.

Personally I think those insane prices make the hobby look like a complete
joke. The same thing happens when a poster sells for a huge price, and
then can't find a bidder at a third of that price.

It's like a pissing contest to see which dealer can ask the stupidest

Claude is so-o-o-o-o right..
I wish I had tracked some sellers like Miniver. He had that Trip to
the Moon postyer at $100,000 years back when he first listed it on
fleaBay (maybe 75k come to think of it)

the poster never sells and has been relisted ad-nauseum for a full
decade and the price has slowly climbed to $650k
I guess the thinking is I need to reclaim all those ebay fees that I
have spent on listing this $%# poster for ten years

Then there are the people who have Star Wars one sheets (regular
style, 2nd-3rd-4th printings) at $1999. AND A RESERVE

(what, the $1999 price wasn't reserved enough?)

there are the supposed sellers who have 100 posters listed of which
few are really desirable and all of which have reserves
they get listed every week and sometimes you even see a fair bid on
some - but they still don't meet the reserve (these are the look
what I have sellers. - oh, aren't I cool because I have these?)

there is one guy who relists on a weekly basis posters for Out of
Sight (60s hotrod movie) and other automobile surfer titles with a reserve.
They have gotten bids once upon a time that were actually quite fair
to the seller. But they've never sold because who knows what he
wants, so now nobody bids on them, and he pays the relist reserve
fees again next week. He will never be able to get out because the
fees of one year's listing is more than any one of them is worth
(except the Ghost of Dragstrip Hollow.. he has a few more weeks of
fees to catch up with that poster)

I could go on all day about them and I have to wonder how smart any
of these sellers are. How long will they continue to list them if
they lose their day jobs??

A few weeks ago a new seller (I wont mention his name because he was very
polite in his reply to me, rather than the usual rude reply from these high
listing characters) and I asked him if he was serious about selling his
posters. The reason was that I was serious about buying one of his but the
price was ridiculous.

His reply to me was that he knows the prices are insane and he really
didn't want to sell any of his posters. However, if some fool came along and
paid him the asking price then he would sell it.

A true sad story. I obviously did not make him an offer.

I know eBay is giving free listings, but does this really help anyone? Many
of the items are inflated by a factor of ten, and I would think they crowd
out any real listings there (if there are any left).

Totally correct Bruce. Between those listings and all the morons
selling reproductions and personality posters in the posters,
originals categories, it's nearly impossible to find stuff you're
looking for easily.

it's also why there are (at this particular moment) 1,000,336
listings in Movie Memorabilia, but only 37,853 AUCTION listings (less
than 4% of total listings)
of course, of those 37,853 listings, only maybe 5000 of them (and I'm
being generous) are true auctions

Between Bruce, Heritage and myself on MPB, there are more true
auctions every week of movie memorabilia than on fleaBay, and unlike
fleaBay's listings - the three of us actually sell all of our
listings (subject to a weekly sell through rate) and on fleaBay, I'd
bet dimes to dollars that maybe 1500-2000 items actually sell

it's why fleaBay has become a pathetic website for collectors
