[MOPO] Hitchcock Stills and Its' a Wonderful LIfe Poster

2009-12-14 Thread Invergo, Marc K
Since you are mostly dealers on this sight, can you give me info. about a large
group of stills from the 1963 re-release Hitchcock film 'The Man Who Knew Too
Much'. Approximately how many photos were in the group and is this a more
difficult set to find.

Also, what year did the large round shaped ornament poster from 'It's a
Wonderful Life' come out and how many different images/colors were made? I'm
sure that they are newer, but they are really quite nice.

Thanks, Marc

[MOPO] Way OT: BITTER TEA OF GENERAL YEN

2009-12-14 Thread Flixspix
Mopoers!

Off topic but maybe not. Tonight at 8:00 PM EST (5:00 Pacific)
Turner Classics is airing Frank Capra's jaw-dropping and all together amazing
early drama, THE BITTER TEA OF GENERAL YEN. I bring this up as many on
this site have commented on their fondness for Barbara Stanwyck and for my
money, this one is hard to beat. It is NOT available on DVD and rarely airs
at a decent time.

BITTER TEA opened RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL and BOMBED, pulled I believe
after one week and quickly replaced with another Capra great LADY FOR A DAY

(talk about back-up!!). Anyway TEA's subject of miscegenation (or the
mongrelization of the races as it was known in the South) was still very
much taboo in 1933 and probably not what the Depression era masses were
looking for as an entertaining trip to the movies in spite of showing in the
greatest Temple To Cinema ever created. (Stanwyck also starred in BABY FACE
the same year, talk about an actress with cajones)

It took nearly 60 years for the film to be re-discovered and now has a
hard-core legion of devotees. If you have ever wondered why the lobby
cards cost $800 and up for such an obscure title watching it will explain a
lot. Film costars Nils Asther (in amazing make-up) as General Yen, a
Chinese Warlord who plays his character so deliciously you will think of Anton
Walbrook in the RED SHOES or other such career defining performances.

Film is very much of the time (xenophobic, well yes) but it melodrama
at its best and is stunningly art directed and photographed. I promise,
you will not be disappointed giving this film a look. LOST HORIZON follows
so for a Monday evening you could not ask for a better double bill.

2009-12-14 Thread Walton, Jeffrey
I know myself I would have walked right on by without giving it much of
a thought. Why? I appreciate the talent to play the violin but don't
appreciate the violin. Not my cup of tea. It's nice background music,
sounds nice at a dinner party or in an elevator or even in a subway
station. And who says he is the best musician in the world? Did we
poll everyone on earth and Joshua Bell came out the hands down
winner...well they didn't poll me for I had no idea who JB was before I
read this article. Art/Music is a matter of self and nothing more. Just
because a few stuffed shirts get together and say this guy is a master,
look at his technique doesn't make me want to drink the kool-aid. Now
if they pasted up say a British quad to War of the Worlds in that subway
you bet your ass I'm stopping and taking a gander...to each their own.

 What are we missing?

Washington DC Metro Station on a cold January morning in 2007. A
violinist played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time
approx 2 thousand people went through the station, most of them on their
way to work. After 3 minutes a middle aged man not...iced there was a
musician playing.. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and
then hurried to meet his schedule.

4 minutes later:the violinist received his first dollar: a woman threw
the money in the till and, without stopping, continued to walk.

6 minutes:A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then
looked at his watch and started to walk again.

10 minutes:A 3 year old boy stopped but his mother tugged him along
hurriedly, as the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally the
mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all
the time. This action was repeated by several other children. Every
parent, without exception, forced them to move on.

45 minutes:The musician played. Only 6 people stopped and stayed for a
while. About 20 gave him money but continued to walk their normal pace
.He collected $32.

1hour:He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed. No
one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

Comment: No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of
the best musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate
pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days
before, Joshua Bell had sold out a theater in Boston where the seats
averaged $100. This is a real story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in
the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a
social experiment about
perception, taste and people's priorities. The questions raised: in a
common place environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive
beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize talent in an
unexpected context?

One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be:If we do
not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the
world playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the
most beautiful instruments . then how many other things are we
missing?

P.S. I verified this story as true on Snopes

2009-12-14 Thread Kirby McDaniel
For people interested in this post, I believe it would be worth your time to
find a copy of the old Frank Capra memoir
THE NAME ABOVE THE TITLE. It's a good read and there is a lot there about the
production of this film,
and all the Capra films.

I met Frank Capra in the mid-seventies, and he was a gentleman. I think I may
have posted this here before --- but he came to Austin and visited
what was then KLRN - and it now KLRU, the PBS affiliate for Austin, to tape an
interview. They gave a reception for him in one of the studios, and
he was moved that so many people came to meet him. And I was amazed that he
was so touched by it. But this was at the time that the worship of
old movies and old movie people was truly cultish!

Mr. Capra suffered from migraine, a condition which contributed heavily to his
retirement after he made A POCKETFUL OF MIRACLES in the early
sixties. His migraines were severe. Knowing something first-hand about
migraine and knowing how he suffered with them, it is a miracle that he
made as many films as he did -- and that they had such a positive worldview.

violins. Jeff I appreciate your post.. But I suggest you give the
violin another chance

I wont see schindlers list because I have the soundtrack and the Violin
on that music makes me tear up and
feel that damn movies ambiance with a still shot and the sound,, Violins
talk to your soul...
this morn I saw Yo yo ma on good morning america on Cello and it was
amazing to even watch his passion in action.. his pitch and tne and
attack of the instrument made my jaw drop...
Perlman and Heifiietz the same.. they are just amazing... Also the red
Violin... one of my favorite films as the cinematography Pops of the
screen with the Violin at its center,,,

My mom was into classical and wanted me to play violin.I tryed cello
however the vibrato is up/down the neck

and I had started Guitar which is side to side vibrato... so it cofused
my little brain. this was liek 1963 when

Kids would make fun of kids that played Violin so I played electric
guitar.. How I wish I would have

listened to my mom... as it is the most beautiful tone and expressive
piece of wood Ive ever heard in my ears,,

Also.. I remember when I was offered a small record deal.. in 70s I
insisted I have actual strings on the record..

I spoked the producer as I wanted real horns basically a orchestra.. and
I was a newbie Guess who didnt get a deal?

I didnt want synth string.. or mellowtron... no I wated the real
thing today however its getting hard to tell differance But the real
thing still rules as far as my ears can tell

The sound of a bow with rosen on strings is just awesome...

please give the violin anther listen.

but DONT play Schindlers list unless you want to ball your eyes OUT
warning!!

also any movie with a great sountrack has oodles of violins... take a
poll its a great tapestry to support the film

This cannot be a poster for MABUSE.

UFA was not the production company nor distributor for that film.
Nero-Film AG was the prod. company.

UFA distributed the 1962 version on DVD, in 2005.

Also of note is that the word Production on this poster is the
english spelling of this word. In German, it would be spelled
Produktion.

I'd say from the style of the artwork, though, that you're
probably right that it's late 20s or early 30s. The style of the

Hi Freeman,

Thanks for the head's up. As many times as I've seen this movie I'll watch it
again tonight. It's one of my favorites and I'm happy to have the style B
1-sheet in my collection.

Great stuff,

Mopoers!

Off topic but maybe not. Tonight at 8:00 PM EST (5:00 Pacific) Turner
Classics is airing Frank Capra's jaw-dropping and all together amazing early
drama, THE BITTER TEA OF GENERAL YEN. I bring this up as many on this site
have commented on their fondness for Barbara Stanwyck and for my money, this
one is hard to beat. It is NOT available on DVD and rarely airs at a decent
time.

BITTER TEA opened RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL and BOMBED, pulled I believe after one
week and quickly replaced with another Capra great LADY FOR A DAY (talk
about back-up!!). Anyway TEA's subject of miscegenation (or the
mongrelization of the races as it was known in the South) was still very much
taboo in 1933 and probably not what the Depression era masses were looking for
as an entertaining trip to the movies in spite of showing in the greatest
Temple To Cinema ever created. (Stanwyck also starred in BABY FACE the same
year, talk about an actress with cajones)

It took nearly 60 years for the film to be re-discovered and now has a
hard-core legion of devotees. If you have ever wondered why the lobby cards
cost $800 and up for such an obscure title watching it will explain a lot.
Film costars Nils Asther (in amazing make-up) as General Yen, a Chinese Warlord
who plays his character so deliciously you will think of Anton Walbrook in the
RED SHOES or other such career defining performances.

Film is very much of the time (xenophobic, well yes) but it melodrama at
its best and is stunningly art directed and photographed. I promise, you will
not be disappointed giving this film a look. LOST HORIZON follows so for a
Monday evening you could not ask for a better double bill.

[MOPO] is a card a poster?

2009-12-14 Thread Michael B

how many times do you scroll ebay and open a page for an item listed as a
poster, and it is a half sheet you have long been
seeking..then you open the page and it is merely a title card?
DAMN!!!

is a card a poster?

i say, NO.

Re: [MOPO] is a card a poster?

2009-12-14 Thread Phillip W. Ayling
I am looking at some invoices that I have from 1962-63 from a variety of Poster
Services.
One from Theater Poster Service on Sheridan St,in Oklahoma never uses the word
Poster to describe anything other than the title of its business.

In fact a half-sheet is described as 22x28 Photo; other terms of art are 8x10
still;One sheet;Three sheet; Six sheet;11x14 sets; 1col mat; etc.

The word poster is similarly absent from most of the invoices I have from other
services as well. More about what sizes do you need and how many?
In fact the only common term I see from most of these services, when referring
to their product, is something like Please return all paper every week

[MOPO] EBAY OFFLINE?

2009-12-14 Thread Irvin Gelb
Hi Everyone,

I've been trying to get on the Ebay.com site for the last hour with no luck.
Is anybody else having the same problem? Possibly an outage or something
bringing it offline.

Take care,

Irv
