This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Sunday, January 4,
2015 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

After a brown Christmas, the white has certainly come to the northland
now. Up to 10 inches of the white stuff on us was dumped on us during
the past 24 hours . The temperatures are plummeting as well, so there is
no doubt about which season it is.

Three Christmas bird counts were held in the northern counties of Roseau
and Lake of the Woods this weekend. Twenty-three species were counted on
the Beltrami-Island count on January 1, including RUFFED GROUSE,
SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, NORTHERN GOSHAWK, two GREAT GRAY OWLS, 2 BARRED
OWLS, GRAY JAYS, 15 BOREAL CHICKADEES, RED-BREASTED NUTNATCH,
GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, COMMON REDPOLLS, HOARY REDPOLL, RED CROSSBILL,
and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL. There are no farms or feeders in that count
circle. 31 species were tallied on the Baudette count including
SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, many COMMON RAVENS and AMERICAN
CROWS, NORTHERN SHRIKE , and both grosbeaks, but no house sparrows. Very
few raptors were noted. I have not heard how the Roseau CBC went today,
as I came home due to the high winds, and heavy snow already fallen.

In Roseau county, Beth Siverhus reported a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW in her
yard in Warroad on December 29.

Two ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were reported in Marshall County – a dark phase
one on December 28 seen by Beth Siverhus, and one seen by Gary Tischer
along US 59 three miles south of Newfolden on December 31. Several
flocks of SNOW BUNTINGS were seen along MN 32 this morning.

Sandy Aubol observed a GOLDEN EAGLE near the intersection of Polk county
roads 23 and 20 on December 28. She also saw 5 SNOWY OWLS in Polk County
that day.

Blaine Hansel saw a BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE northeast of Ashby near Lake
Christina on December 28.

Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than
Thursday each week, at ajjop...@mncable.net OR call the Detroit Lakes
Chamber's toll free number: 1-800-542-3992. Detroit Lakes area birders
please call 847-9202. Please include the county where the sighting took
place. The next scheduled update of this report is Thursday, January 8,
2015.

[mou-net] Rice County Snowy Owl(s)

2015-01-03 Thread Laura Coble
I saw one of the two Snowy Owls today, in the middle of the morning today,
thanks to Kathy Thom and her very young grandson who both saw it before I did.

It was in the field quite close to the east side of Kane Avenue, about 1/8th
of a mile (or less) south of 190th Street, the same location where it has been
reported by Dave Bartkey, Gerry Hoekstra and Dan Tallman. The owl was facing
away from us, but occasionally turned its head, so we could see its eye. It
was lined up with a red house in the background.

I didn't get a full look at its front, but the owl was all white on the head
and back, except for some some very tiny spots on the wings, viewed from the
back, so it was possibly the same owl that Dan photographed.

A note: 246 south is actually Kane Avenue as well, so if you turn at the sign
for Nerstrand onto 246, don't turn right when you see the Nerstrand Big Woods
sign--just keep driving south on what is 246/Kane Avenue until you reach 190th.
Google does give this information.

Finally have access to the internet and wanted to update the Snowy Owls
reported in Crow Wing county.

I was there on the 31st and relocated an immature Female Snowy Owl at 4:05 pm.
The bird was on the roof of the Goodyear tire company, which is across the
street from the Crow Wing County Fairgrounds.

[mou-net] Rice County Snowy Owl photo

2015-01-03 Thread
Hi All—

This morning I posted a photo on my blog of one of the two Snowy Owls being
listed in Rice Co. near Nerstrand. I also shared a link to a classic post
by Kevin McGowan on how to tell the sex of some Snowy Owls.

http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com

Thanks to Dave Bartkey for alerting us to the owl’s location.

Re: [mou-net] [mou-rba] [mou-net] Todd County Townsend's Solitaire

2015-01-03 Thread CRAIG MANDEL

Ron Erpelding and I were successful in our search for the Townsend's Solitaire
previously reported in Todd county. This was on January 2nd at 9:00 am. Ron
spotted the bird about 300 yards West of the location that Scott had found the
bird on the 1st. There is a small stream at the location we observed the bird,
which still had some open water.
