Re: [mou-net] Probable Northern Hawk Owl

2018-01-05 Thread Nathan Schirmacher
All,

Thanks to my dad for being able to post! Just got done with my appointment and
was able to drive back to the site on the highway. I could not refind the owl.
But I want to give everyone that would possibly look for it a warning that
there was a owl size carcass in the middle of the highway (was not there when I
drove by the first time) where it was seen when I got back to this site. I
tried to get id on the carcass but was mostly flattened already and was not
able to get at it as it was to busy of a highway. Hopefully the carcass was not
the owl and I will keep my eye out in the area as I am there a few times a
week. I was able to get the coordinates and they are below.

My son, Nate Schirmacher, is out making sales calls for AT He does not have
access to MOU on the road.

However, he is reporting a probable Northern Hawk Owl between Forest Lake &
Chisago, on Highway 8, 1/2 mile north of Green Lake Trail. The bird appeared
in a farm lot on the right hand side as one traveled north.

I’m out hiking here in Kansas, hope I caught all the details correctly. He
could not stop & search.

[mou-net] American Avocet and Whimbrels 180th Street Marsh

2017-05-18 Thread Nathan Schirmacher
All,

Much like Jasons recent post I tried to find some shorebirds at Lake Byllesby
no shorebird habitat to note. I however had great luck at 180th Street Marsh.
While looking through the marsh I heard the call of an avocet overhead I was
surprised to see two Whimbrels flying over with the avocet! They quickly flew
over the marshes and headed north. There is shorebird habitat at either end of
the marsh unfortunately not much visibility. Tried driving the back roads in
the area but could only find yellowlegs. Just wanted to give a heads up to
everybody that they still might be in the area if you can find the habitat.

[mou-net] No Mottled Duck

2016-02-17 Thread Nathan Schirmacher
All,

Writing this while at the rum river dam location. As far as I know the Mottled
Duck did not make an appearance all day (Last sighting seemed to be around four
yesterday, I had it in the morning) . The last of usable light is fading and
all but thirty of the duck flock is gone. This is clearly not there roosting
spot rather a day time feeding spot. The two times I visited today there was
people feeding the ducks from the bridge and on the west side of the river.
When the whole flock was there counted five black ducks and three hybrids. Best
of luck to all who try to tomorrow!

[mou-net] Coon Rapids Dam Male Long Tailed Duck

2016-02-07 Thread Nathan Schirmacher
All,

The Long Tailed Duck has been seen off and on all day. Thanks to all who have
posted so far on ebird and mou. Currently the duck is sleeping with a group of
goldeneye about a half mile upstream from the Dam at 3:30 pm. The location is
on Zieglers Drive the first right north of Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park. There
was a few of us birders and a homeowner that was gracious enough to let us
watch the long tail in her backyard. This was at the end of the dead end road.
In talking with the neighbors they would be open to a little bit of traffic but
not much (there is very little parking space available). So if it is not seen
from the Dam this a location that could be checked as long as we are all
respectful about it. It is possible to walk to the spot on the east side of the
river so maybe that would be a better option moving forward. Once again thanks
to all who posted and the homeowners who were intrigued by the rare duck!

All,

Just wanted to say thanks to Milt Blomberg for discovering the Varied Thrush in
Oakland Cemetary and John Hockema for calling with directions. On location now
and the Thrush is being very cooperative sitting in the crabapple trees for
over an hour. Multiple birders were also able to get the Townsend's Solitaire
in Anoka County today. While photographing the Solitaire I also had two pine
grosbeaks do a quick fly over while calling. Always a good year if you can get

[mou-net] Pacific Loon Mille Lacs Lake

2015-11-06 Thread Nathan Schirmacher
All,

There is an adult non-breeding plumage Pacific Loon that is swimming a couple
hundred yards offshore from the kathio state park beach area on Mille Lacs
County Road 35 or the scenic route along Mille Lacs Lake. Observed swimming
with five other common loons of both adult and juvenile plumage. Appeared
smaller than all the other commons around it. Thin necklace and classic darker
back comparatively to the other loons as well as the sloped head. So far
nothing else on the lake other than a good movement of horned grebes. I have
seen Pacific Loon from this beach in the past and have experience with this
species in multiple Midwestern states. Unfortunately it is to far out for
pictures.Overall the numbers of the loons on the lake has been pretty low so
far but still making my way north. Will swing by again on my way south to see
if it comes closer to shore for pictures.

This is not a hundred percent certain more of heads up. There was a kite
flying down the Mississippi River in Elk River just as I was driving across
the 101 bridge. It headed up the river flying in a northwest direction. The
Id was not based on the river as ironic as that is. I first saw that it was
definitely kite flight behavior. It had a white base body with contrasting
white and black wings. The wings appeared swept forward slightly. The tail
was black and long but triangle in shape. Like I said not a hundred percent
certain but let people know that there is kite heading up the river. I have
had experience with this species down south which is leading me toward

[mou-net] Sprague's Pipit and Ferruginous Hawk

2011-05-17 Thread Nathan Schirmacher
Today Pete and Kathy Sufka, my
parents, and I went to Big Stone and Lac Qui Parle counties. Are highlights for
the trip were a Sprague’s pipit and Ferruginous Hawk for the day. The Pipit was
seen on 191st Avenue about a quarter mile south from Laq Qui Parle
Highway 15 ( highway fifteen is the road that is right beside of Plover
Prairie). Basically go down fifteen heading east from highway 75. Once you hit
the plover prairie sign take a right. Go about a quarter mile down and the
pipit was seen on both sides of the street. It was alternating from a tree to an
agriculture field (Unfortunately the pictures did not turn out because of a not
so powerful lens). The Ferruginous Hawk was seen soaring over the trail that
starts at the intersection of Lac Qui Parle county highways of 40 and 15. This
intersection is south of the Big Stone NWR HQ about two miles. We have
previously
reported a Ferruginous at this location in the past few years. Other birds of
note were five Greater White-fronted Geese as well as one Snow seen at Salt
Lake. Shore birding was very bad for the day ending up with six species on the
day. However all together great trip!

after we got there. So we brought it back to are house and I took some photos
of it. I then put it in the freezer to keep it in good condition. If you know

[mou-net] Great Day On the North Shore

2009-10-16 Thread Nathan Schirmacher
My Dad and I worked out our work schedules so that we could get today off
and head to Duluth. We were able to get there by 9:30 this morning. The first
good birds of the day were two strikingly beautiful male breeding plumage
Long-tailed Ducks. These were seen off the boat house on the point, we then
headed to park point. The beach was not very productive so we decided to park
at the airport and walk to the end of Minnesota Point. Lets just say we were
not thinking it would be that far... one hour later after i convinced my Dad
that we should keep on going even if it was a death march we arrived at the end
of the point - where within thirty seconds we had the previously reported
Immature Lesser Black Backed Gull on the Minnesota Side and the Thayer's Gull
on the Wisconsin Side. So we walked an hour to see two Gulls yet we were
overjoyed with the fact that they were good ones. After we walked back feeling
like we earned those two gulls we ate lunch at Taste of Saigon (favorite stop).
Then headed up the shore to Stoney Point, where there was little to nothing
until my Dad stepped towards the car. I said SCOTORS and pointed as four of
them flew past; simultaneously I said Black and he said Surf. I realized he
concentrated on the first duck which was a Surf Scotor and i was concentrating
on the last three of the flock which were Black Scotors. So we were saying
great day lets head up to Two Harbors and see whats up there. We arrived and
nothing much was immediately seen. So we started walking on the trail. It was
going pretty good until my Dad asked me if i had seen the finches that had
flown across. I said Lesser Black Backed Gull as my second of the day flew past
and my Dad missed it. It was an immature plumage type bird that was less than
fifty yards away flying with a Adult Ring billed Gull. We headed back to the
car and got in. Then I noticed a strange gull floating out in the water so i
set up the scope and there was are second Thayer's Gull of the day. This bird
was also in immature plumage. So altogether a Great Birding day. Question is,
were the gulls worth walking two hours for, in light of the later sightings? I
say most definitely always nice to find new areas and great sites.

Great Birding to all,

[mou-net] Lac Qui Parle County/Spotted Towhee and Weird Oriole

2009-05-13 Thread Nathan Schirmacher
Today Bill Unzen my Dad and I went birding in the above county. It was a
great trip and only made possible by Bill Unzen who knows that area so well.
Highlights included:

1. Female Spotted Towhee. This bird was seen in the southern part of the refuge
(main bridge/rest stop a mile or so from the headquarters). It was seen in the
brush by the river. Dad, however, missed it three times.

2. Great Tailed Grackle seen by my Dad and I. It was seen along Highway 75 a
few miles north of Madison.

3. 23 species of shorebirds seen throughout the county (including American
Avocets, Hudsonian Godwits and many other goodies).

4. Snowy and Cattle Egret.

5. Interesting Oriole at the above rest stop (see #1). Color was burnt orange,
the orange extended onto the face, strong white wing patches (seen both in
flight and while at rest), call of chek chek. Illustrations in Sibley and on
Cornell's site - as well as a very strong call match on Cornell - lead us to
serious consideration of a Bullock's.

Any thoughts would be appreciated on the oriole. Thanks again to Bill who did
an excellent job of finding all these spots and locating most these bird's.
Great birding to all.

We were not able to locate any Great Grey Owls in the bog, even though we

[mou] Duluth Trip; Unusual Gull (Mew?)

2008-11-08 Thread Nathan Schirmacher

Nathan and I traveled to Duluth and Two Harbors today. Highlights included all
three scoters, a Red-throated Loon, Golden Eagle (amidst an eagle migration),
Northern Goshawk and a number of winter finch flocks at Stoney Point, including
White-winged Crossbills.

However, the bird that drew our greatest attention was an unusual gull in the
Park Point soccer fields/parking lot. We were initially attracted to this
immature gull by its darker color and small size, further examination yielded a
brown belly, thick dark tail band with an inverted V, small pink bill with a
dark tip, pink to greyish legs, white throat and darker face than the immature
Ring-billeds around it. The gull appeared slightly smaller than the
surrounding Ring-billeds, although such appearances can be deceptive. We
observed the bird - unfortunately during the snow showers - for about 20
minutes on two occasions around 11 AM - through bins and a scope - at rest and
in flight. However, when we returned with Mike Hendrickson and Peder Svingen,
the bird was not apparent/present.

The evidence seems to point towards a Mew, although we are aware how unusual
such a bird would be. Mike and Peder were still searching for the bird when we
left for lunch; we appreciate their interest.

Good birding to all!

[mou] Red-throated Loons, Townsend's Solitaire, Fierce Competition +

2008-10-18 Thread Nathan Schirmacher
Nathan and I tried something a little different this morning - we competed for
species totals and rarities in adjacent counties - he covered Mille Lacs and I
covered Sherburne.

The old man lost on this wind blown day, 54-53 (species) and (at least) 2-1
(rarities).

Highlights included:

* Two Red-throated Loons, Mille Lacs Lake, Hillcrest and Garrison (latter was a
county violation, but excusable due to scouting for next week's trip)

* Townsend's Solitaire, Sherburne County, Ann Lake/Sand Dunes (right of first
parking lot) (seems awfully early to this observer)

* Northern Goshawk, Mille Lacs WMA (one also present yesterday on Sherburne's
Auto Tour)

* Snow Goose, Mille Lacs County, just south of the reservation in the opposing
lake (do you think I could find a Snow Goose? Or any goose different from
hundreds of Canadas, many with short necks but huge bodies? I'm snake/goose
bitten this year!)

* Eleven ducks total, including Ruddy Bufflehead in Princeton Sewage Ponds

* Five Rough-legged Hawks in Mille Lacs County (none in Sherburne)

* Winter Wren, Mille Lacs CR 12

* Twelve sparrows total.

Also of interest were the dramatic differences between our lists - Nathan had
24 different species than I - I had 10 ducks, he had two (hunting pressure?) -
he had five raptors, I had one - I had two warblers, he had none - he had
Rusties and Brewers everywhere, I had only Red-winged - I had three shorebirds,
he had one (different from my three). Neither of us had any Meadowlarks
(numerous yesterday in the refuge), Mourning Doves (wind?) or House
Sparrows/House Finches.

Good birding to all!

[mou] Red-throated and Pacific Loon

2008-10-11 Thread Nathan Schirmacher
Today my Dad and I went to Mille Lacs Lake. In Wigwam Bay there was a non
breeding plumage Pacific Loon. We then traveled to Garrison where directly out
from the Big Fish there was a non breeding plumage Red-throated Loon. So the
phenomena continues to happen on Mille Lacs Lake. If you have any questions
about the birds feel free to backchannel. Good birding to you all and looking
forward to seeing some of you on the fieldtrip. Nathan

[mou] Alert!(White-Tailed Kite)

2008-08-29 Thread Nathan Schirmacher
Today my Dad and I were planning on doing two days of birding in
western and northwestern Minnesota. Well lets just say it didn't go as planned.
We started in Big Stone NWR (17 shorebirds), then headed to Ortonville. That is
when my car started having problems. We limped it into Ortonville, then the
bird of the day showed up. The White-tailed Kite flew a couple hundred feet
above the car just north of the intersection of 7 12 near the Holiday Gas
Station. The bird had black wings except for close to the body which was pure
white. It was grayish on top with black shoulders . The tail was not swallow
tailed. The bird seemed like it was all sharp angles except for the body. I
saw it on three separate occasions for 2-3 minutes. Any questions feel free.
Sorry no photo available do to the car failure.

[mou] Buff Breasted Sandpiper/Crossbills

2008-07-26 Thread Nathan Schirmacher
Today my Dad and I went up to Aitkin county. One of our first birds was a
Buff Breasted Sandpiper sitting in a pond on the intersection of Aitkin 15 and
441 Place. It sat for a little while with some Pect's then proceeded to go off
in the grasses (where we could not relocate it). We then went to the famous
Aitkin 18 where on the snowmobile trail we had 25+ White-winged Crossbills.
Then about ten minutes later heading from a opposite direction came 2 Red
Crossbills. There also was a Yellow-Bellied Flycatcher on the snowmobile trail.
One other notable bird was a Magpie seen at Rice Lake NWR. This seemed a bit
south for this species. All in all a great day of birding, also my Dad had 22
Butterflies on the day.

[mou] Summer Tanager Blue Hill

2008-07-18 Thread Nathan Schirmacher
Today i was at Blue Hill Trail in Sherburne NWR. I observed a Female Summer
Tanager. The bird was a few yards before the main trail that goes left into the
main woods. This location had Male and Female Summer Tanagers in 06 these
were found by Helen Wang. Then later confirmed by many people. These are some
of the field marks. The Tanager had yellow underneath the tail. The color was
uniform yellowish all over the body except for the wings with some grayish on
it. It sang a couple brief notes which were all over the map but not buzzy. It
unfortunately flew away as soon as my camera focused on it. If you have any
questions feel free backchannel.

This Duck was the one i posted about yesterday. The bird appeared to have

appeared rather large. Any thoughts on this bird would be great.

[mou] Shorebirds

2008-07-06 Thread Nathan Schirmacher
This afternoon I went to the Foley sewage lagoons and Gilman sewage
ponds. Foley had all of the shorebirds. Gilman interestingly enough had a Black
Duck mixed in with the Mallards. Here is a list of the shorebirds.

* Killdeer
* Wilson's Phalarope
* Both Yellowlegs
* Least Sandpiper
* Semipalmated
* Baird's
* White Rumped (I thought this was super early but it i saw it in flight. Any
thoughts on why its this early would be appreciated)

Also there was a unusual duck at Foley which i will post pictures of later.

[mou] Warblers, plus directions to Ferruginous

2008-05-15 Thread Nathan Schirmacher
After enjoying Big Stone Lac Qui Parle with Nathan yesterday, spent day two
of the birding vacation here in Sherburne Mille Lacs Counties, scouting for
Saturday's MOU trip.

124 species included 23 warblers - 20 on Mahnomen Trail in Sherburne NWR - also
a singing Connecticut at Kathio State Park (first parking lot). Missed
Bay-breasted, Pine and Mourning among regulars - no Ceruleans or Hooded present
on Blue Hill Trail in the refuge (yet?).

Our apologies regarding not sharing the Ferruginous location yesterday (we were
much more concerned about the Say's Phoebe) - it was also seen near the corner
of 15 40 in Big Stone Refuge. Take 19 past the headquarters, this becomes 15
shortly, proceed a couple of miles to 40 (first right hand turn). The bird was
seen along the trail to the left. Nathan had excellent scope looks at high
power - noted the size, white body, V underneath and the red back (among other
details) - understand it was nearly a ringer for the Sibley illustration. I of
course, was searching for godwits and plovers in the ponds, so only glanced at
the bird briefly.

This is being sent from Nathan's home computer, will not be back in the office
until Sunday.

Good birding to all!

[mou] Call Question

2008-04-14 Thread Nathan Schirmacher
Just a couple minutes ago I heard a call kerrwheep sounded exactly like
a American Golden Plover. I did not see this bird though, I could not because
of my dog. I looked on the MOU site and the arrival date is April 29th for the
northern section. So my question is it possible this was a American Golden
Plover, or is there another possibility that i am not thinking of. For those
who don't know my family lives in a development surrounded by agriculture
fields (which are wet at the moment), in southern Mille lacs county. Any
thoughts would be great.

Pardon the lateness of this email, office computer has been down for 1.5 weeks.
Authoring this from Nathan's system, hope to be back up by middle of next
week.* Saturday, May 5th (Sherburne Refuge, Mille Lacs Lake/Hennepin, Benton CR
25 Gilman Ponds)89 species, including Hudsonian Godwit (ponds on Benton CR
25, two miles south of Foley) - MN bird #300 since relocating here 12/03 -
Nathan's #297, breathing down my neck! - eight species of warblers, including
Golden-winged Pine (latter awfully late first of year) - full six pack of
swallows (only one martin along the lake!) - Caspian, Common Forster's Terns
on the lake - nine shorebirds (primarily on Benton 25), including two
Long-billed Dowitchers, first day we've really had shorebirds to speak of -
Black-billed Cuckoo calling at Gilman ponds - other expected first of years -
and an unexpected theft of our scope from the vehicle at Blue Hill Trail (nine
years of great service), which made shorebirding more of a challenge. If
anyone's selling a used reasonable scope, let us know.* Monday April 30th
through Friday, May 4thRuby-throated Humminbird (5/2), Blue-Headed Vireo (5/1),
House Wren (5/1, finally!), six new warblers (including an unexpected
Blue-winged in Mille Lacs County, and a rather late first of year Palm on 5/4)
all joined the hit parade.* Saturday, April 28th + -Western Day (no, not the
Salt Lake trip) - Western Tanager at Thomas Maiello's (thanks to both of you
for hosting both this bird and interested birders, including those who arrive a
bit early), Western Grebe in Sherburne County (Lake Fremont, Zimmerman area).
Bit earlier - Lark, Grasshopper, Clay-colored Sparrows all in, particularly at
Sherburne NWR. Six Lark Sparrows this morning on Mahnomen Trail. Still
awaiting White-crowned Harris' Sparrows, Sora (bizarre!) - and have only

[mou] Carolina Wren in Mille Lacs County

2007-04-14 Thread Nathan Schirmacher
Today my Dad and I were birding around Mille Lacs and Sherburne Counties.
At Kunkel WMA we had a Carolina Wren. Other migrants today were Hermit Thrush,
Winter Wren, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and Vesper Sparrow. To reach Kunkel,
take 169 north past Princeton to MN 95. Take 95 west to Mille Lacs 5, proceed
south (left) into the WMA. The Carolina Wren was on the western side of the
trail, in the forested area where a small pond has developed.Nathan

Today a very dark looking vulture flew over my house. I grabbed my bins and=

[mou] Lac Qui Parle, France birding

2006-07-22 Thread Nathan Schirmacher
This is my first post, although I've gotten to know a number of you.

My dad I birded Lac Qui Parle and Big Stone NWR yesterday. The highlights
included: two Snowy Plovers (Big Stone), two Piping Plovers (one at the
NWR, other at Salt Lake - dad missed both!), Red-necked Phalarope (Salt
Lake), Grey Partridge (Swift County) and Eurasian Collared Doves (Madison).

However, whiffed on Loggerhead Shrikes, Blue Grosbeak, Greater Prairie
Chicken and Great-tailed Grackles.

Recently returned from a missions trip to France. Didn't get much time to
bird, but enjoyed 25 life species including: Eurasian Hobby, Black Kite,
White Wagtail and four species of tits.

Thanks to all of you who shared locations of birds in Lac Qui Parle and Big
Stone!
