[mou-net] DNR requesting help with Wild Turkey and Ring-necked Pheasant Observations
(Posted by Mike North via moumn.org) Starting this year, the Minnesota DNR is asking that individuals who observe wild turkey and wild pheasants during the summer to report their observations. This community science effort is intended to help the DNR monitor wild populations of ring-necked pheasants and wild turkeys throughout Minnesota. In particular, we are hoping to better inform our annual productivity estimates. This information, along with other monitoring programs, helps biologists better track trends in the distribution and abundance of pheasants and turkeys across the state. This survey asks you to report observations of wild turkeys and wild ring-necked pheasants. In doing so, we ask for: ⢠The date and location of the observation. ⢠The number of birds seen of each species for different age and sex classifications (young, adult, male, female, etc.) ⢠If you choose to, you can submit a picture of the birds in your observation. This is entirely optional and not necessary to complete the survey. ⢠If you choose to, you can submit your name and an email address, and you will receive follow-up communication about survey results and reminders about participation in future years. ONLY INDIVIDUALS 18 OR OLDER should submit their name and email address. It is not necessary to provide this information. If you are under 18 or do not wish to share this information, you do not have to in order to complete the survey. For 2024, you must be connected to the internet to complete this survey., though you can complete it using a PC or a mobile device. ⢠You must have internet access to complete the survey. You can access the survey by following the link on the MN DNR Wildlife Sightings Web Page (https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/wildlife/sightings/index.html) or by scanning the QR code using the camera on your mobile device. Please let me know if you have any questions! [mou-net] Black Scoter behavior
(Posted by Janet C. Green via moumn.org) On November 23, 2023 at 8:30 am, I (John Green) observed from our front apartment window, which is 80 feet from the the edge of Lake Superior, a small dark duck flying fast in a straight line from NE to SW heading toward Canal Park in downtown Duluth. At 1/2 mile out, it suddenly circled around and flew toward the lakeshore a bit northeast of Glensheen, where it landed by a flock of 13 Canada Geese that were just offshore. It was much smaller then the geese, of course, but it swam along with them for several minutes while I watched with a telescope. The geese seemed to ignore it, but twice I noticed one on the geese making unfriendly gestures toward it. It then swam a bit farther along the edge of the flock. After about five minutes, the duck took off and was not seen again. The duck was all dark except for a large whitish patch on the side of the head. Consulting Sibley, it was easily identified as a Black Scoter. Jan Green, who keeps the list, said it was the hundred thirty-first species we have seen from our apartment windows. [mou-net] Reverse migration April 16 Duluth
(Posted by Janet C. Green via moumn.org) Weather event of snow, sleet, fog, freezing rain led to a massive reverse migration low and close to shore of Lake Superior at London Rd. 40th Ave. E. Estimate of at least 10, 000 birds per hour from morning thru afternoon. It was too low to be picked up by the radar at the Duluth Airport at the top of the hill. We watched from our apartment (Ecumen Lakeshore) which sits close to the Lake, and the flow of birds past our large picture windows, going from east to west into the fog, was mesmerizing. We (John, Martha - daughter) guessed about 50 to 100,000 total for the day. Species were mostly blackbirds (Rusty BB and grackles dominate), finches, sparrows, robins, flickers, warblers (YRWA), other passerines. Identification when one bird would perch momentarily in small tree at the water's edge. I have been living and birding the North Shore since the 1960's, and seen lots of reverse migration in the spring but never before at this magnitude. [mou-net] Red-bellied Woodpecker with rodent, Hennepin County
(Posted by Brian Tennessen via moumn.org) This morning at Old Cedar Bridge, actually beyond the bridge, over where the trail from the bridge T's at the river, I observed a behavior I've not seen before--A Red-bellied Woodpecker with a small rodent, maybe a vole or shrew, maybe a mouse for that matter. The bird carrried this around for some time, then put it into a tree hole, seeming to cache it. It then flew off. I would imagine this is an opportunistic find that this Woodpecker came upon, maybe a cached kill of a Shrike for example. After caching, the woodpecker still had a small piece of innards that I presume it then ate, I have a photo of this as well. If anyone has seen this behavior before or thoughts on this, please comment. Quite an interesting behavior.. I talked with Dale Carlson and Steve Carlson about this after this occurred, as they were both down at the bridge as well, and showed them the photos on my camera. Neither of them had observed this behavior before. Please comment with any thoughts, similar observations you may have had in the past etc. https://flic.kr/p/2o2jjxc https://flic.kr/p/2o2gvbR Brian T. [mou-net] Broad-winged Hawk
(Posted by Connie Grundhofer via moumn.org) I was watching the Wild Turkeys in the back yard. I saw a hawk flying into the White Pines. Flew over house into a white pine facing away from me. Sun was on its back. Pine needles were covering it partially. Eventually it turns to face my direction. Sat for a few more minutes. It flew south to the front yard onto a tree stump. In a couple of minutes it flew about 15' over to a shorter tree stump. The Wild Turkeys had now walked to the front yard and headed towards that stump. Broad-winged flew away. Thought it was a female juvenile according to the size and markings. Have photos. [mou-net] Co-Nesting Behavior
(Posted by Carol Cummins via moumn.org) While tending bluebird houses this year, I came across some unusual behavior. A Chickadee nested and laid 4 eggs in one of the boxes. The following week, a Tree Swallow flew out of the same house. There were now 7 eggs in the nest including 3 swallow eggs. The swallow had also added the usual feathers typical of their nests. For the next few weeks the Tree Swallow was incubating the eggs, but would not leave the box during my visits. I have no idea if the swallow incubated all 7 and whether they all fledged. I have tended a group of 16 bluebird house for about 5 years and have never observed this behavior. How common is this? When two birds simultaneously use a nest, does one species prevail? Or are eggs and/or fledglings rejected? Any other insights? Thanks. [mou-net] Black-billed Magpies moving south?
(Posted by <> via moumn.org) In having lived and birded in Cass County off-and-on for over 50 years, the only black-billed magpies I had seen until this year were in McKinley Twp where they are known to breed. This year I also found one in Sec. 20 of Ansel Twp on the Pine River Breeding Bird Survey route in June. But this fall I have seen them elsewhere in the County on 3 separate occasions. First, in Sec. 24 of Birch Lake Twp on 22 October, then in Sec. 29 of Leech Lake Twp on 27 October, and lastly in Sec. 18 of Wilson Twp on 13 November. Dale Yerger reports they have been seen occasionally around Deep Portage, and they have been seen on the Pillager CBC twice, and my wife has seen them at Cass Lake a couple of times recently. But overall, I have the impression that they are either moving south this year in greater numbers than usual, or their local population is expanding. (Posted by Anthony X. Hertzel via moumn.org) This year the fair runs from August 26 through September 6. Our booth will be in the same location as past years at the DNR building. We have to apply to be selected for the booth every year and we are grateful for the opportunity to promote MOU, birds and bird conservation to do many people. It's also a lot of fun talking about birds with fair-goers of all ages. We will have the bird quiz wheel and bird hand stamps for kids, NEW designs of the MOU bird bookmarks, flyers from bird-focused non-profits like Friends of the Sax Zim Bog, etc. As in past years we must fill three four hour shifts for a full day from 9 am to 9 pm. Each shift is hosted by two amazing MOU volunteers. If you volunteer for the booth your state fair ticket is covered by MOU and will be mailed to you before the fair. (Of course you may prefer to purchase your own tickets and MOU thanks you for that extra donation.) [mou-net] Chickadees
(Posted by Mike North via moumn.org) Oh, the lowly black-capped chickadee. Loved by artists and appreciated by the general public, but totally disregarded by ornithologists. Well, chickadees do do interesting things, but these go noticed unless they are banded. And black-capped chickadees are doing something unusual now, I'm not just sure what it is, or what the magnitude of it is. I have been banding chickadees regularly at my home near Pillager for 22 years. It is rare to recapture a banded chickadee after a lapse of more than 2 years. Out of some 1000- 1100 banded here, the following table lists the 11 longest lapses between captures. Note that four of the top 5 longest lapses occurred this year, and 3 of those were this "fall" (which I define as starting after this years crop of young have fledged, so starting as early as July). My prediction is that there will be large numbers counted on the Christmas Bird Counts this year EXCEPT perhaps in the northern portions of their range. [mou-net] Twin Cities Finches
(Posted by Chet A. Meyers via moumn.org) This is supposed to be a good year for finches, especially purple and pine siskin. The problem is none of the Nature Centers have staff and thus feeds have no seeds. So does anyone know of feeders one could visit where one MIGHT see some finches in the five county area? [mou-net] Duluth Mississippi Kite Yesterday
(Posted by Julian Sellers via moumn.org) I observed a Mississippi Kite yesterday in Duluth. Here's my report to eBird. I was at a private home with a deck with a partial view to the north and northeast and a wide view to the southeast (toward the Duluth harbor and St. Louis Bay). The location is 7.8 miles southwest of the Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory. The forecast was for good raptor migration with a northwest breeze, but at my location the cloud cover did not disperse until about 14:45. At about 15:15, I started seeing kettles of Broad-winged Hawks and some other individual raptors. At about 15:40, I saw what I first took for a falcon, due to its long, pointed wings and long tail, approaching at a moderate height from the north. I soon noticed that its flight was not falcon-like; it glided, executing an occasional quick twist, turn, or dip hawking insects. I also noticed a light-colored head and a light body contrasting with an all-dark slightly flared tail. The trailing edge of the secondaries, seen from directly below, appeared white. I observed the bird for a minute or two before I lost it as it glided out over the bay. About five minutes later, it returned, gliding in the opposite direction (northwest) over the ridge.
