Re: [mou-net] Fwd: [mou-net] PAINTED REDSTART RAMSEY COUNTY

2020-10-23 Thread Brian Tennessen
Hi,

I posted one more photo that I got October 21 of the Painted Redstart.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/fisherkingbat/50520508862/in/dateposted-public/

These that I've shared here represent about the best I was able to get. I
have been out a few times since, yesterday afternoon and this morning in
the falling snow, hoping for another sighting and maybe some closer sharper
shots, but have not seen the bird again.

On Wed., when I got these shots that I've shared, I had one really nice
chance to get a closer shot, when i first got there--the bird flew out from
the house and landed on a branch ~6-8 feet in front of me, and I was all
ready, lens extended, lens cap off, except for one important point--I
didn't have the camera switched on yet! By the time i switched it on and
re-aimed, the bird had flown off to a new spot. Live and learn, all part
of the adventure! Others may have been able to get some nice closer
shots..

Some birders I saw this morning said there were some yesterday afternoon
sightings posted to Ebird. That was news to me. The last sighting i had
been aware of was yesterday morning 10/22/2020 ~8 am, that was shared here
on this thread..

Happy birding to you all,

Brian

2020-10-22 Thread Brian Tennessen
I have not seen any reports of it having been seen past the sighting this
morning. I went out and walked around for a couple hours, along with
others. Perhaps the drier weather that should be the case tomorrow may
have the bird out and about again.

I have posted a few more photos I got yesterday, to Flickr account:

I watched the Painted Redstart foraging on windows, screens and in the
soffits of many houses. I saw it perch on a branch as well as a ledge of a
house.
>From what I could see it had spider webs on its feet. It was able to cling
to the screens while foraging for insects, and it was hovering in the
soffit areas of many houses. I took about 60 photos of the bird. The mass
looked different in many photos as the web moved with the air currents and
gravity. Its wings and undertail coverts also had webs on them. The toes
look normal.

I have posted some photos on my Facebook page. Call me if you can not find

Hi everyone,

What a remarkable opportunity to see such a gorgeous bird. There is one hanging
out right now in the Outer Banks as well.

>From a professional standpoint, it could have gotten caulk or tar on its feet,

If it is some foreign substance, we can do our best to remove it but - keep in
mind that we cannot, per regs, release a bird with a missing foot.

So, if the toes or the lower legs are necrotic we would euthanize it.

I want everyone aware of this while making a decision about what to do.

If that was the case - that the feet were dying/dead, the odds of the bird
surviving the winter would be slim, but all the same you'll need to weigh out
the pros/cons of letting it live out its life or bringing it in to see if can
be helped.

Fingers crossed we can help it, but keep in mind the entire picture.

In the meantime if someone has heated baths in the area the bird might use them
- maybe the material will soften and break off.

Feel free to contact me via email off-list if you have additional questions.

Hi,

I live in this area, and was off work this afternoon so went out and was
able to observe this bird, along with many others.

Others have maybe already reported on this by observing the photos they've
taken or observing through binocs, but this poor bird seems distressed,
maybe just the cold weather, but it appears to have something tangled
around its feet. Here is a photo I've taken, which is not great quality,
others may have gotten better shots.

https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.flickr.com_photos_fisherkingbat_50514459501_in_dateposted-2Dpublic_=DwIFaQ=euGZstcaTDllvimEN8b7jXrwqOf-v5A_CdpgnVfiiMM=5gIOkmnQ1nLB2gWkMnpF7Q=MCHilm8bDJDxdCeuV4A_DYf_CCTClPMBfU4jdsTw2So=l8MLu8EPkseRgTHxbfoidrgg6WnyL7DX9o06RuKbge4=

I can't tell what all this is around its feet, but it is a much larger mass
of stuff than just its feet...

Being a bit new to birding I'm not sure if there's a protocol that would
try to capture this bird and take it to the local wildlife rehab center,
given that it appears entangled with something?

Hi everyone,

What a remarkable opportunity to see such a gorgeous bird. There is one
hanging out right now in the Outer Banks as well.

>From a personal standpoint I'm kicking myself that I'm up at our cabin
right now.

>From a professional standpoint, it could have gotten caulk or tar on its
feet, we think it's far too much to be scale but it's hard to see from
photos. We see this periodically in birds.

If it is some foreign substance, we can do our best to remove it but - keep
in mind that we cannot, per regs, release a bird with a missing foot.

So, if the toes or the lower legs are necrotic we would euthanize it.

I want everyone aware of this while making a decision about what to do.

If that was the case - that the feet were dying/dead, the odds of the bird
surviving the winter would be slim, but all the same you'll need to weigh
out the pros/cons of letting it live out its life or bringing it in to see
if can be helped.

Fingers crossed we can help it, but keep in mind the entire picture.

In the meantime if someone has heated baths in the area the bird might use
them - maybe the material will soften and break off.

I can't tell what all this is around its feet, but it is a much larger mass
of stuff than just its feet...

Being a bit new to birding I'm not sure if there's a protocol that would
try to capture this bird and take it to the local wildlife rehab center,
given that it appears entangled with something?
