RE: [Mpls] No Bikes on Lake Street?

2003-03-04 Thread Tom
As I see it, excluding bikes from Lake Street is yet another attempt by the county planners to "keep the ghetto out", and it's a form of racism and classism. Think about it - Lake Street won't accomodate bikes, and then there is the big mess of highway-style lanes for several blocks in either direction of I35-W that will come complements of Peter McLaughlin's brainchild (boondoggle) "Access Project". None of this promotes non-automobile traffic; they actually inhibit anything without a muffler. My guess is they are afraid that east-west access will become too easy, crossing the moat that is the freeway, and "exposing" the sheltered, wealthy neighborhoods to the west to all that the city has to offer. By the way, I've been casually following the Access Project for a long time, but I've never figured out why extra ramps for cars constitutes access. Would not true access accomodate transportation modes that are not currently accomodated? Also, I checked out www.stride-mn.org, and can report that the site has been updated with a great deal of additional information. I learned more than I wanted to know about the dirty politics surrounding this boondoggle. Peter McLaughlin ought to think hard about proceeding with this project or not.Tom WellingUptown--- On Tue 03/04, Dave Piehl < [EMAIL PROTECTED] > wrote:From: Dave Piehl [mailto: [EMAIL PROTECTED]To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Date: Tue, 4 Mar 2003 07:43:50 -0800 (PST)Subject: [Mpls] No Bikes on Lake Street?Jim MCGUIRE wrote:The Greenway is wonderful, but it is not a replacementfor access to main streets.David Piehl writes:Absolutely!!Jim writes:In any case, it seems that this is a non-issue sinceit appears that the "ban" on Lake St. was just a rumor(unless there's something I've missed, which iscertainly possible)David writes:As it turns out, it's not a ban per say - bikes justwon't be accomodated. I love the Greenway and make use of it during the day. But after dark it
doesn't feel safe.As the economy continues to get worse, and with
more and more poor people losing their safety net, crime will eventually
go up, despite all the recent efforts of City Hall to turn Minneapolis
into a police state. With this in mind, if I bike after dark, I'd rather
pedal on roads like Lake Street where traffic is moderate to
heavy.--Peter Schmitz, CARAG

2003-03-04 Thread Dave Piehl
Indeed, the Greenway is only a block north of Lake
Street, but for people who want to access businesses
on Lake such as myself, it doesn't make sense to get
into the trench and then not have access at Lake. By
removing (or more accurately; not accomodating) bikes
on Lake St., you remove a lot of street level activity
that can nurture small businesses.

[MH] Don't forget, the Greenway is only a block north of Lake and includes
pedestrian walkways and bike lanes, and likely some form of mass transit at
some point in the future.

I don't believe anyone has forgotten this, but it is a seperate issue from
bike access on Lake St. It would be like telling someone in a car that
we're closing down Franklin but it doesn't matter because Lake St. is only a
mile away.

The Greenway is wonderful, but it is not a replacement for access to main
streets.

In any case, it seems that this is a non-issue since it appears that the
"ban" on Lake St. was just a rumor (unless there's something I've missed,
which is certainly possible)

[Mpls] No Bikes on Lake Street?

2003-03-03 Thread Dave Piehl
Jim Grube wrote:

(snip) I may have said that once Lake Street
is reconstructed, bikes would be prohibited. This
will not be the case.
Because of the limited room along Lake Street, and a
desire to avoid building removal, reconstructed Lake
(snip) will (not) have bike lanes (it doesn't now).
If bicyclists do wish to use Lake Street, they
will be allowed to so (in the same manner they do
today).

David Piehl writes:

Thanks for the clarification Jim - as I understand
from your post: essentially, bike access does not
exist today on Lake, and will not be incorporated into
the new design (expected to be good for 40 years)
either.

My question for project organizers and list members:
Is this a done deal? I certainly recognize the space
limitations, but firmly believe that a plan that will
allegedly serve the area for the next 40 years really
needs to include some form of non-automobile
transportation. Have bike lanes been rejected out of
hand? If so, by whom? Is there a possibility of
putting them into the plan? Are alternative transport
concepts from other cities and countries being
considered, or do we always have to be 20 years behind
the curve in Minnesota?

I hope this isn't true. First of all, it seems counter to the concept of an
environmentally friendly city. Secondly, whose going to enforce this?
Anyone see a perfect set-up for another reasons to hate cops? IF this is in
the plans, I hope somebody is bright enough to change the plan immediately.

[Mpls] No Bikes on Lake Street?

2003-02-28 Thread Dave Piehl
I heard from someone who attended the Lake Street PAC
meeting that Jim Grube of Hennepin County stated that
as Lake Street is re-built, there will be no
accomodation for bikes - bikes will actually be
prohibited - can someone offer more insight and
information on this??
