Re: [MSX] IDE-CF: No enough memory
Yes, but some CF cards give a lot of problems. I am using 16 MB CFs, and they are the best for my needs. I had some strange errors with other cards too! If it is bigger than 32 MB you should create partitions, so you will have to boot from floppy. And, by the way, IDE CF won't work in your MSX2+, because it needs 128 KB RAM at least in order to work properly (due to MSXDOS2, that needs 128 KB). With the fdisk you should do the partitioning and then all should work normally. The problem is that if I boot the computer with a memory card in the master slot, the computer always hangs with the following error: No enough memory. These are the things I've found out: - Booting the MSX without a memory card inserted, the interface's BIOS says that it cannot find a master device and the computer boots normally. - Booting with a memory card in the master slot, I get the No enough memory error message in a FS-A1ST (expanded to 512Kb) and a FS-A1GT. I've tried also an FS-A1WX (64Kb) and I don't get the error message, but the floppy disk in this computer is broken, so I couldn't do more testing. - Flashing the BIOS works correctly when I boot the computer without a memory card. - The No enough memory error appears regardless of the slot where the cartridge is inserted. My hardware is: - Panasonic FS-A1ST (512Kb)/A1GT/A1WX - CF ATA-IDE, BIOS 2.21 - 128Mb CF card (detected as TOSHIBA THNCF128MA at boot) - Nothing else connected to the computer Any ideas on what can be causing the problem? Re: [MSX] Chase HQ cas file
I have never found anything like a filter in the cassette entry. At the moment, I am able to recognize data at 11000 bauds in a 3,5 MHz MSX. And the speed could be even higher using a more detailed format (let's say, a 64 KHz sound card) and a faster CPU (Z80 at 6/7 MHz). Anyway, 11000 bauds (real speed) is not very reliable. 8700 bauds is 100% compatible if you use a decent CD player or a PC. I love to load games in just a few seconds. 8 KB ROMs take about 12 seconds to load (including the special loader!). I also remember from my early days that some models are much more sensitive about the signal then others. My VG8020 could hardly read some tapes, while the same tape used on a Sony would load without a glitch. It was common knowledge those days that any Philips machine was much more pickier about its signal then the Sony machines. RE: [MSX] MSX Resource Center
Just like you, Patriek, I often do not approve what the MRC crew does, but I do appreciate the huge work that they are doing for the MSX community. Just as you do too -I mean with your constructive posts, not with the others-. Different opinions, as we all know, are necessary to improve discussions. MRC has on more than one occasion lied to me, falsely accused me, and portrayed me as a troublemaker (both to people in MRC itself and publicly). All I want is a public apology and full rehabilitation. I hardly agree with that. Look here: http://www.msx.org/newspost1887.html As everybody can see, you were insulting Sjoerd and me with no reasons, just to defend your outdated version of TNIasm. I asked the moderators to stop it, but no. Even the post wasn't edited. It is not my intention to continue this war, because it is not mine. I think that MRC should not use its censorship powers, and I also think that only opinions and facts, but not attacks, should be posted there. Anyway, Guyver, as I said in other messages, I do sincerely appreciate your worth contributions to the MSX community, but I think that sometimes your deffend your opinions in a rather unpolite way. Re: [MSX] msx.org is blocking brazilian accesses
Good morning, I am sorry if you have missunderstood my message. I was just saying that I connect to I-Net using Telefonica and I do not have any problems. I can perfectly view and connect to MRC. I am not insinuating anything, but thank you for thinking always in the worst case. Please read again my message: I was plainly saying I USE TELEFONICA - IT WORKS FINE FOR ME. Nothing more, nothing less. I was just adding some more information to the list, because I do not know if Telefonica is responsible or not. Really, my technical skills do not arrive that far. Anyway, Sander, thank you for your confidence. I think that MRC forums are enough to insult me, please do not continue this. Edward Robsy Good morning, And I connect from Spain but using Telefonica and I can view perfectly the pages. I don't think Telefonica routes your internet connection from Spain to Brazil to the Netherlands. Do you? When the Vodafone network in the Netherlands is down, you can probably still call in, from and to other countries. That doesn't mean Vodafone doesn't have a problem. So the problem is not related with Telefonica. Try to solve it: the brazilian MSX community is one of the biggest in the world. What are you trying to insinuate, Robsy? That we are deliberately blocking access to our website from all South American counters??? WHY??? Or are you implying that we are not doing the best we can to solve this problem as quickly as possible? This isn't the first time that you are insinuating something about the MSX Resource Center that's absolutely not true (what was it again, being only in it for the money? Pah!). Let it go, Robsy. The contents of our website speak for themselves. We are there for the MSX users, for ALL MSX USERS. There is a reason why we change webhosts that often: we want our website to be fast and available to everybody. If there is a problem, inform us about it and we will see what we can do about it. 24 hours ago, we were not even aware of this problem. Just because no one bothered to inform us about it. The first ones who did (Flyguille and Ricardo Bittencourt) were very kind and co-operative, but somehow some people rather like to start posting conspiracy theories. I really don't see why some people are instantly making these kind of insinuations. Maybe you can explain. As you can read the MRC, have a look here: http://www.msx.org/forumtopicl3017.html To all people who can not reach MRC at the moment: we are working on it, but it takes some time. [MSX] MSXdev'03 game development competition
Hi everybody! Finally this first generation MSX game development competition has started. You can participate as a programmer, or perhaps donate some MSX stuff to increase the prize or even become a judge in it. You can read more in my new (but crappy) MSX pages: http://www.robsy.net I hope that you will all participate in this! It's the coolest way to celebrate the 20th MSX anniversary. By the way, have a look at the rest of the pages (the site is now starting, and there's no much to see yet). Kind regards! (and see you coding soon) Edward Robsy _ MSN Fotos: la forma más fácil de compartir e imprimir fotos. http://photos.msn.es/support/worldwide.aspx ___ MSX mailing list ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) Info page: http://lists.stack.nl/mailman/listinfo/msx
[MSX] More PSG doubts
Hi! As far as I know, Flying Bytes' PSG Tracker was coded by Diederick de Vries (programmer of Meridian) and I have seen his name in this list. Could you tell me, if you remember it, what does the BEAT ON/OFF feature do? I haven't heard any difference at all. I am reprogramming that tracker (I love the controls and it is really easy to use) and a brand new replayer using a more compressed file format. At the moment, the replayer supports 8 octaves, channel detunning, volume variations, pitch bend, envelope shape changes. I cannot implement that BEAT ON/OFF because I really do not know what it does exactly. And at the moment, I use only 128 different combinations: there are 128 combinations more (to fill a byte) to add different effects, like vibrato and tremolo. That will do one byte per channel and an extra byte for controlling the white noise: that's 4 bytes per entry. Replaying 10 entries per second, that will be about 10 KB for a 5 minutes song. Any suggestions will be welcome. After finishing the tracker and its replayer, I am planning to add SCC support. Thank you for your help! [MSX] Fastest and most flexible assembler
Hi again! Another question for consolidated coders: which is the fastest assembler? And I mean command-line assembler, not things like COMPASS with IDEs, etc. Basically I need a strong assembler and fast enough to work fine in a SVI-738 machine (64 KB RAM, 128 KB VRAM upgrades, but MSX1 BIOS). Of course, MSX1 compatible working under MSX-DOS1. As far as I know, the Microsoft CP/M assembler is terribly slow and does not support undocumented opcodes. Does GEN80 work better? I got used to work with the tape version with its own editor (cool!). ag0ny has recommended me the package ASLD (AS.COM and LD.COM) produced by NOVATEC Group (those russian guys). It looks interesting and has full support for Z80/180/380, but does not seem to be really fast. Ideas? Any suggestion will be welcome. I am really fed up of cross-development. I want to use just my MSX to produce MSX software. Ops! And what editor do you recommend me for editing the sources? TOR is great, specially the version that uses the VRAM to store data: 128 KB source code is not that bad, uh? Thank you once again for your help! Fwd: Re: [MSX] minimum hardware configuration
Hi again, Hi, Ok. How about this? I have a MSX2 machine and replace MSX2 BIOS ROM with MSX BIOS ROM. Then does the MSX2 machine work? It'll depends on what is the hardware of this MSX2. If it has Mapper, it may not work, since MSX1 BIOS do not set mapper. Also, if this machine has different VDP ports everything will be messed up. Most of the times it will work. At least I have changed the original MSX2 BIOS ROM (32 KB) of two Philips machines, NMS-8235 and NMS-8245 with a MSX BIOS ROM from a Sony HB-75 and it worked really fine. And both machines have got mapper. How about in the reverse case (MSX2 ROM to MSX machine)? Then I think it'll hang on boot. MSX2 BIOS will probably look a lot of things that do not even exist on MSX1 (it will read the clock, set VDP palette, etc) I will hang. It will look for MSX2 SUBROM and it will fail. The same for clock access and VDP operations. Another case: I have two different MSX2 models, and if I replace their ROMs with each other, then do they work? Maybe yes, maybe no. Supose you have a Japanese MSX2 and a European MSX2. If you exchange their roms, at least, the keyboard will start to act weird... because their are probably a lot different if you look at the key matrix. Ok, that's true, but anyway I think that the system will be able to boot, despite doing weird things afterwards. [MSX] Flying Bytes' PSG tracker and .PSG files
Hello! I posted this question also to MSX.ORG forum: I have recently discovered this fab PSG tracker, and now I want to know more about the PSG file format and also about the usage of the tracker. The instructions are really short, just how to use the commands. I would like to code my own replayer for PSG files. I assume that this PSG file format is not related with the PSG format produced by fMSX emulator, for example. I know that there are other replayers, but I need my own replayer because I am coding MSX ROM files (to produce MSX cartridge games if I am skilled enough with tin and solder). Thank you! Re: [MSX] minimum hardware configuration
Most of the times it will work. At least I have changed the original MSX2 BIOS ROM (32 KB) of two Philips machines, NMS-8235 and NMS-8245 with a MSX BIOS ROM from a Sony HB-75 and it worked really fine. And both machines have got mapper. This is the one that I want to know :) Did you change only main-ROMs? Yes, of course. MSX1 have only one 32 KB BIOS EPROM. So I removed MSX2 MAIN BIOS from its slot and replaced it with the MSX1 BIOS. Nothing more, nothing less, and it worked fine (althought there some changes in the keyoboard layout). Do they have the same memory (slot) configuration? I think that both Philips (VG-8235 and NMS-8245) have the same slot configuration, but my VG-8235 has that annoying memory bug (any solution to fix this?). This is it, BIOS in slot 0, slots 1 and 2 connected to cartridge entries and extended slot in slot 2, with DISKROM, SUBROM and memory. And another question: Can MSX2 be booted without CLOCK-IC? (Please break the clock chip of your MSX2, and let me know the result if possible ^^) Yes, but you need a patched MSX2 BIOS. The original BIOS needs the Clock IC, but you can find patched versions that do not need clock at Hans Otten's page. http://www.msxhans.msx2.com Look at the SVI-738 page, there are some BIOS variations to do the MSX2 upgrade. They should work fine for you. Greetz, from the still-curiousity, Jun. Kind regards, Ed Robsy _ MSN. Re: [MSX] minimum hardware configuration
Hi! For an MSX1 it will be enough with 8 KB RAM and 16 KB VRAM (if THE MSX RED BOOK is right about the MSX standard definition). MSX2 needs at least 64 KB of RAM and 64 KB of VRAM too. But no need of memory mapper, that's right (MSX2 Technical Handbook). [MSX] Newbie! And PSG advanced programming
Hi everybody! I suscribed today to this mailing-list. First of all, please forgive my awful english, 'cause I am spanish (and of course, my dutch is even worse). My initial question is the following: how can I produce a vibratto using only the PSG? I was amazed when I heard MATRA's productions music and sound featuring only PSG support. I guess that I have to combine envelopes and change simultaneously the frequency. Am I right? Any help will be welcome. Thank you!
