[MSX] Encouraging Event in Korea
Hello MSX users over the World! This time, I'd like to inform you a news that MSX user meeting will be held on Saturday 3rd, April in Seoul, Korea. This event is organized by a MSX user club, "Paradise of MSX" and open to all MSX users in Korea (and World) Although it is expected that few MSX users will join, this will be really inspiring event in this century. [MSX] DOS2 format procedure
Thanks a lot for the previous DOS2 slot handling issue. That was not the bug of mine ^^ Now I have another question for DOS2. I have a disk format routine and it works fine but after format is completed, DOS2 says: "Invalid parameters" (or similar message) It seems that DOS2 calls disk format routine in DISK ROM and read some data back from the formatted disk. What field does DOS2 check from formatted disk? [MSX] DOS2 slot management
Hello MSX users I have a question for DOS2 slot management. According to the manual, application program does not need to restore slot-page-mapping (except page 3). But it seems not correct.. because when my program changes the slot number of page 1 and exit (function call #0), DOS2(command2.com) is corrupted. When it restores that slot to the main RAM slot and exit, it's ok. Do you have any experience about that? What is the truth..? [MSX] media descriptor
Hello, Media descriptor is used to differentiate disk types. For example, F9h indicates 2DD (floppy). I need full description (table) of media descriptor for MSX and PC. (Some descriptor of MSX system seems to conflict to PC's. F8h is used for 1DD in MSX system but for HDD in PC system. Right?) If you have such an information, let me know. Thanks for the FAST reply :) But... I missed some descriptions... I have _used_ HDD with Sunrise ATA-IDE on the MSX2+ in serveral years. One day, that did not work... Of course I have an enough memory (1MB memory mapper) and MSX-DOS2... All other cartridges work fine (Or just seem to be fine...) execept ATA-IDE. Most important fact is that "ATA-IDE not detected - flash loader cannot find that" Again, ATA-IDE is detected on other MSX2 machine. I believe that my F1XV has a hardware problem.. somewhere in expansion slot logics... Hi again, I'd like to know what is the minimum configuration of hardware for MSX BIOS to run. For example, If I have an existing MSX(2) BIOS ROM and have a strange board which has a Zx80, a RAM (whether mapper or not), a PPI and a VDP, can I expect MSX logo on screen? Hi, Although you mentioned a lot of facts, there was no answer for me. According to the features you written, new MSX is on my desk. An XScale (Intel/ARM) -based small computer... It has a USB port of course... and Linux is being ported now... The important fact is that I cannot feel fun with that board... I don't like to make something for that board... So I need another board/computer to feel fun... although you have a MSX machine for you... that will be not functional soon, like my MSX (T.T) I need "OLD technology-based but NEW" machine... Hello still-MSXers, I have a question. "What is MSX computer?" The answer seems to become more confused... after the revolution of EMULATOR. USB... and slot expander is connected to it. Already good H/W exists... PC is that... Why need new MSX hardware then? The one of the reasons that I like MSX is the easiness to make hardwares. USB gives me a certain barrier to design new hardwares... Even if USB-slot expander exists, how should I drive my new hardwares...? Ok, device driver/OS can do that. Only one I must do is just making a call back functions... Hmm... MSX (Z80) is not enough computation power for that. I'm not sure but even with TR, it's difficult to make good midi-file player. Strictly speaking, PERFECT midi-file player is impossible(?) for even Pentium processor... IDE interface not detected
Hi, Suddenly, yes, suddenly, my pretty Sunrise ATA-IDE interface does not work on my lovely MSX2+(Sony XV) :( No initial message is displayed. It looks like that the interface is not detected. The strange thing is that it is detected(initial message is displayed) on another MSX2 machine(Daewoo). I did several tests to solve the problem. - I checked power: ok - I changed the slot: the same result. Other cartridge works fine even in the same slot on which the IDE interface does not work. - I dumped the content of the area occupied by the IDE interface: All are filled with FFh. What's wrong? Hi, I did some tests by myself. MSXDOS2 was successfully run on Korean MSX2 (CPC-300) with FDD. The conclusion is that the problem is now: "MSXDOS2 is not run on Korean MSX2 (CPC-300) with HDD that is partitioned by another MSX2+ (Japanese) computer." Hi, Lately about the protected mode... If you want to implement it, minimize it. The reason that I like MSX, is the full controllability. MSX is a PERSONAL Computer, so all results are responsible to the user. Well, it may be also good to prevent the important system area being crushed in another point of view. Then I suggest that just some memory space can be protected optionally. In AHDL style :), mem_protect = ( A[31] == b"1" ) and not(super); The simplest way! Hi all, About the R800 clock speed... I don't know it exactly. But I think the minimum clock cycle of an instruction is 1/7MHz(140ns). In general, many CPU need higher clock frequency than the instruction frequency. For example, the external clock is devided by two and two different clocks(say ph1,ph2) are generated. One is used for reading and another one is inverted and used for writing. In the case of LD A,B instruction, read B by rising edge of ph1 and write the value to A by rising edge of ph2 are executed in turn. Anyway you need not to know that how many clocks are internally used. If the system clock is 7MHz, I guess this means that the fastest instruction is executed at 7MHz frequency. > > Another question... Also you can build huge memory for 4G linear address space of Z380. And new softwares based on MSX3 can use the linear address. I think that we need a standard in the memory structure for MSX3. One method is to build a switch for changing the memory structure. And other method is to use address decoding. Hi all MSX/emulator freaks, Well, I also want to stop this boring disccussion... Firstly, I'm sorry to trigger this fighting... But I can't understand why it became fighting... First subject was the new standard of emulator. And I wrote that it was nonsense. Still I think so. Second subject was a question, "Why hate emulator?" And I wrote that it decrease MSX users. Still I think so. Hey, I DON'T mean VERY YOU! I'm saying about general situations. I know some emulator users bought real MSX again. How great? But think.. that is not important. Why? As you know, MSX will be broken someday. Then they will use emulator only. In my opinion, it is no meaning whether emulator users have real MSX or not. Emulator users prefer to emulator than real MSX. That means the emulator users prefer to PC and its environments. Maybe, for some emulator users, it's not true. But I'm saying about general emulator users. I hope that I'm wrong... Emulator users ask why I think them different than real MSX users. The answer is this question. "Which computer do you use?" I can say, "I USE MSX computer", of course. But lots of emulator users must say, "I USE P333 with 3D card... and it can emulate MSX...~ Most emulator users use emulators and don't want MSX computer. They can do every thing including MSX emulation on their PC. It's really cool! They really think that PC rules! Let's think when real MSX is broken. It seems that some of you think that we must use emulator, then. They assume that there will be no real MSX computer. Then, we must point out followings. Now in this mailing list, there is anothor discussion about so-called DOS3. How stupid it is! Big partition? Useless. We must use PC soon because we have no real MSX. If we need big partitions, let's use the PC disk system. Imagine... who makes MSX softwares when there is no real MSX. For emulators? Why? It is better to make PC softwares directly. It seems that there is a gap in mind for the MSX future. When real MSX is broken, what should we do? Why don't think that we can make hardwares? Yes. It's very difficult practically. So must we give up? Think that what is "ALIVE". I think that "ALIVE" is developing, producing, selling, buying, consuming ... and it is not to run MSX softwares occasionally. I think so. Don't misunderstand me please. I don't want to attack any MSX emulator users. I love MSX and MSX lovers! I'm very happy to meet you, MSX lovers, online. I think always the future of MSX. Please be positive. We can make new MSX standard. Why not? PC is fast. Really fast. But it is not superior to MSX even technically. I think so. Just MSX is consists of old stuffs compared with current components. We can extend MSX knowledge and develope new architecture for the future of MSX.
