[MSX] MKROMDSK: Convert your RAMdisk into a ROMdisk

2004-12-22 Thread Néstor Soriano
Hi all. To help waiting while the ObsoNETs arrive, here is a little
program I have just developed. It is available on my web page, in the
miscellaneous section.

MKROMDSK will generate a ROM file with the data present on the DOS 2 RAM
disk. Burning this ROM file on a Flash cartridge, when booting your
computer you will see a disk drive with a read-only (and non-volatile,
of course) copy of the contents of the RAM disk when the ROM was
generated.

And by the way, the resulting ROM will have the DOS 2 kernel embedded.

And now, merry MSXmas and the like.

[MSX] NestorBASIC 1.11 available

2004-12-06 Thread Néstor Soriano
Hi all, those that are using NestorBASIC to develop InterNestor
Lite-based programs, please download version 1.11 which I have just
uploaded to my home page. The only difference of this version from 1.10
is that the method for detecting the presence of INL has been updated to
the new method required by INL 1.0. Also, the sample program TCPCON-L
has been updated.

[MSX] Merry xmas: InterNestor Lite 1.0 SDCC library for INL available, ObsoNET problems solved :-)

2004-12-05 Thread Néstor Soriano
Hi all, here are a couple of interisting news:

1) The design problem that delayed the production of ObsoNET has been
solved. The card production will start as soon as Daniel can gather some
free time for that.

2) I have uploaded to my home page InterNestor Lite 1.0. New on this
version is:

- The method for detecting the presence of INL has changed. Now a call
to the extended BIOS hook is used, instead of having to check fixed
locations on the system work area.

- If a configuration file named INL.CFG exists on INL.COM's directory,
it will be read and applied when INL is installed.

- The supplied Telnet client now has partial support for VT100 escape
sequences.

3) I have uploaded also a C library for INL, intended to be used with
SDCC.

...and a happy new year.

Would this really be so advantageous compared to existing transfer protocols?

It would be easy to implement on MSX, that was the main design goal.
Besides, don't you like to use a protocol that has been designed

I write here because I see there's also Konamiman! :)

You are in the right place then! :-)

 INL PPP O /N: etc...
compose the number, I hear server replying, but after an error message
 appears:
... no hold the carrier or something similar.

Hummm... try executing the following:

INL PPP M ATDTISP number

and tell me which reply you obtain.

If you get a successful connection with the previous command, execute
INL PPP O as you do normally, but without the /N switch.

P.S.: Is it possible to emulate connection to the Internet with an emulator,
 using the PC modem?

The only internet simulation I have done is conecting with a
null-modem cable to a Linux box... but that did not involve using a
modem.

[MSX] ObsoNET: First speed test

2004-08-17 Thread Néstor Soriano
I have performed a simple transmission speed test with the provisional
BIOS of ObsoNET. The test consisted on sending one 1KByte long packet, 1
times on a loop, and measuring with the MSX timer how many time the
operation took. These are the results:

On R800: 31 seconds, so about 320 KByte/second.
On Z80: 118 seconds, so about 85 KByte/second.

Of course the real performance will be smaller since on real
applications more code will be involved, especially when using TCP/IP.
But this can serve as an indication of the absoulte maximum
transmission speed achievable.

- Corected some bugs. Reduced the size of the TCP segments to avoid the
Fossil driver to lose data.
- Now the control program INL.COM supports configuration files.
- Added Van Jacobson compression. This compression reduces the size of
the TCP/IP headers, originally 40 bytes long, down to an average size of
5 bytes.

Re: [MSX] NestorBASIC 1.10 available

2004-06-20 Thread Néstor Soriano
I assume this was a bug in the MoonBlaster MSX-MUSIC detection routine.

Yes, it was.

It is a strange history. In NB 0.07 and earlier, the same routine was
used, but with the POKE to the address #7FF6 removed (I don't remember
why I did it that way). This caused the japanese FMs to not be detected
by NB. So, in version 1.0, I added the poke... causing the problem in
the Panasonic machines.

I'm using now a correct routine now, I hope that the problems are over.

[MSX] About memory usage in (Disk)BASIC

2003-07-12 Thread Néstor Soriano
Hi ppl, here is a lightweight question for those who are in summer
holidays and have therefore a lot of time for MSX investigation.

It is about how the memory is used in the BASIC environment when disk
interface is present. MSX2 Technical Handbook says that it is as
follows:

- Up to HIMEM (HFC4A), normal BASIC memory.
- From BLDCHK+1 (HF377+1), BLOAD/BSAVE routines, 25 bytes. This
variable points to the same address as HIMEM.
- From FCBBASE (HF353), space for disk FCBs of disk files opened by
BASIC (this area is 37*7 bytes, so a maximum of MAXFILES=6 can be used,
FCB 0 is used for BLOAD/BSAVE). Note that this is not the same as the
FCBs area in the normal BASIC memory (267 bytes * (MAXFILES+1))
- From HIMSAV (HF349), the general disk work area starts. This area
exists also in DOS mode.

I have seen that this scheme is followed exactly in this way in DOS 1.
However in DOS 2 it is different:

- Up to HIMEM (HFC4A), normal BASIC memory.
- From HIMEM to HIMSAV there is an apparently unused area of 525 bytes.
- From HIMSAV, the general disk work area starts. BLDCHK+1 and FCBSAVE
point to somewhere into this area.

And the question is: what is this 525 bytes ghost area for? May it be
reused for BASIC programs (doing a CLEAR up to the address pointed by
HIMSAV) safely? 525 bytes is really much memory when using the BASIC
environment.

OK, so go for it, the first person replying this question will earn 100
points!

[MSX] MSX without slots?

2002-12-19 Thread Néstor Soriano
The USB MSX cartridge reader is not only interesting for MSX emulators but it
is also the first step towards a new MSX. If a new MSX will be developed,
then the new MSX will not have MSX cartridge slots. But it will have a USB
port. So then the USB MSX cartridge reader can be used in conjunction with
the new MSX to play old ROM games.

Interisting, but I do not completely agree this approach. In this
text it seems that cartridge slots are an obsolete feature just for
playing old ROM games, and that it is logical to made it optional in a
new MSX. But we must not forgot that cartridge slots are essential for
connecting new hardware, and thanks to it we have memory expansions,
SCSI/IDEs, MoonSounds, etc... how long could a new MSX survive without
cartridge slots?

USB can reach up to 12 Mbps, so, if a clever protocol
is designed, the entire cartridge bus can be emulated over the

I agree. I don't say that connecting slots through an USB port is a bad
idea. I just say that slots must not be optional.

Just in case someone is intereseted: today I exposed my end of career project,

and they were amazed because I developped everyhing by reading RFCs only.

So, from today I'm telecommunication engineer. Now call me Sir, please.

InterNestor Suite beta 5 available

2002-07-07 Thread Néstor Soriano

Hi obsolete people, I've just upload the 5th beta of InterNestor Suite
to my home page. New in this release:

- Even more improved TCP module. It should have no more serious bugs.
- New PPP module, with some bugs regarding the options negotiation
corrected.
- New version of the FTP client, with some bugs corrected and a pair of
new features.
- A true telnet client (not just TCP console), although only a few
telnet options are recognized.
- New version of the dialer NDIAL.COM. Now it accepts any string from
the modem indicating success, not only CONNECT (configurable via
environment variable). Besides, the initial error checking feature
(using the environment variable INSERROR) is now optional.
- New version of PPPC.COM, to make the error checking feature optional
as well.

According to my plans, this will be the last beta I release. The next
version will be the definitive one; definitive means no more updates
unless I receive bug reports.

And again: InterNestor suite would be much more nice if someone develops
Internet applications for it. The suite API is fully documented in the
TXT attached to the beta, besides the source codes of the PING and the
TCP console programs are included.

And now, as a summer promotion, everyone who develop applications for
InterNestor Suite will receive my autograph for free. Need more reasons
to get InterNestored??

InterNestor Suite beta 4 available!

2002-05-15 Thread Néstor Soriano

Hi all, I just put a new beta of InterNestor Suite on my home page.
What's new:

- New NestorMan version (1.22). It corrects a severe bug of previous
versions, which caused the computer to hang when memory blocks of
certain sizes were requested.
- New physical access module, with a larger input buffer which reduces
data loss.
- New TCP module, with a lot of bugs corrected (although still not
perfect). Besides it has now the SWS avoidance algorithm, and includes
PSH and URG bits in retransmitted packets (at least theoretically).
- A complete FTP client is now available! It is very similar to the
default command-line based client of Windows or Linux.

Please get it from http://msx.konamiman.com and test it! Also, it would
be very nice if someone wants to develop some internet applications for
MSX.

Re: Bad FAT

2000-08-29 Thread Néstor Soriano

I've got a problem. One of the directories on one of the partitions of my
harddisk seems to be, like, recursive. Yes, it enlessly contains itself. I
can't find the original contents back anymore, but they weren't important.
Obviously this is some error in the FAT. Fact is, I can't delete the bloody
thing, because my computer hangs when I try of course. Chkdsk finds no
problem at all. Does someone have a solution to my little problem? Oh, I use
 the IDE interface of Sunrise.

You need the sectors editor DISKVIEW. Once your wrong disk is selected, select
"Dir", and find out what is the starting cluster of your worng subdirectory.
Then select "FAT" and go to that cluster number; surely you will find
that it points to itself, or something like this. Put this FAT entry to
0, and then enter again to "Dir" and erase the subdirectory entry.

Now the subdirectory should have disappeared, but its contents still on
the disk in the form of lost clusters. Just execute CHKDSK to remove
them and all is done.

What happens to us??

2000-08-22 Thread Néstor Soriano

We were happy when we tough that ASCII has completely forgot us and we
were completely alone. And now that it seems ASCII is again interested
on MSX, and it is even possible that a new MSX is released, we start to
worry and be pessimistic and negative. Why??

The MSX users meetings must finish if a new MSX is released?? What a
nonsense!! I don't know how it is worldwide, but in Spain, MSX users
meetings are for meeting friends and sharing ideas rather than for
selling anything (although there is a lot of soft selling of course).

Besides, let's suppose that again "official" software is released. This
means that all the amateur groups must immediately stop to develop new
programs?? No way!! I don't know for all of you, but as for me, I
program my MSX because I LIKE TO DO IT, regardless of how many software
is already available.

What is the worst scenario we can run into? No emulator and no new MSX?
But hey, that's how we are from a lot of years ago and we never started
to cry, right?? As for me, the sole interest of Nishi on MSX is already
a very good thing. I'll continue using Compass at 134% regarldess of
what happens in the MSX scene from now on. And you? 8-)

About agony (was: IMPORTANT NEWS FROM ASCII)

2000-08-20 Thread Néstor Soriano

The largest point of this news is, that ag0ny is first 3rd party who
actually saw ASCII employees mention these subjects. ag0ny's Spanish article
suggests ASCII employees told him those news from their own mouth (using
 English I guess, not castellano).

Actually agony wants to work in ASCII, and that interview was actually a

work in Japan, but agony seems to just try it, to don't worry and to be
happy... 8-)

I have appointment with him 1 hour later. Good luck to me!

IMPORTANT NEWS FROM ASCII

2000-08-18 Thread Néstor Soriano

Javi Lavandeira, the webmaster of www.aamsx.org, is currently in Japan
and he had yesterday an interview with Nishi, Yamashita, Yokoi and Gotou
from ASCII corp. This is the english translation of the message he sent
to the spanish MSX mailing list:

---

ASCII wants to make a new MSX. And this is not a rumour. I repeat: this
is not a rumour. And it is not only that "they want" to make it, but
actually they are already working on it. It is a three phase project:

* Phase 1 - Develop the ASCII official MSX emulator

This emulator is already almost finished and it will be presented on
Den-yu land 2000. It will emulate MSX, MSX2 and MSX2+ as well as a PC
can emulate it. If I understood correctly, from now on they do not worry
about Turbo-R. Once finished, english, spanish and portuguese versions
of the emulator will be developped. And *MAYBE* (I repeat: maybe) MSX
DataPack (+1000 pages) will be translated to these three languages.

Phase 1 status: The emulator will be finished in approximately one
month.

* Phase 2 - Develop and sell software which will work both in real MSX
and in the emulator

ASCII will release an internet server for selling MSX software. There
will be free software and pay software. Nishi already spoke with Konami
and Namco and they will sell here their old programs *AND THE ONES
DEVELOPPED FROM NOW ON*. Amongst the free software there will be
software from amateur groups (not necessarily japanese). ASCII will
obtain a percent of the benefits for the software sell through this
server.

Phase 2 status: The software to be used for the server is already
developped, and ASCII has negotiated with NTT the internet payment
system details. When the emulator is officially released, the server
will be put online.

* Phase 3 - Develop a new MSX.

The new MSX will have a 100 MHz or 120 MHz Z80 , 4Mb RAM and 4Mb VRAM.
About the rest of the hardware, they do not know yet exactly what they
will do, because there is two simultaneous developping works:

1) ESE Artist's Factory is using reverse engineering to build the MSX
circuits using PLD technology. There is already finished and 100%
working PSG, SCC and V9918. Z80 is not needed to be copied because it is
a very common chip. Now they are working on V9938/58.

2) ASCII has already negotiated with Sega the making of the new machine.
Yokoi commented that they can start to produce it when they wants to do
it.Contrarywise to the ESE option, now all the MSX circuits are
integrated in one, so production is very cheap. They are negotiating now
the selling price: 19800 yens the complete machine. ASCII finds this
price too cheap (this is very logical because they want to earn money).

Phase 3 status: negotiating with SEGA while ESE work on the VDP. The
ones who first finish will win, because ASCII do not want to wait.
Yamashita says that now is the perfect moment to release a cheap home
computer which can be a reasonable alternative to PC.

As you can see, things are not as bas as we though . Will we
successfully reach phase 3? It depends on the amount of software sell,
because what ASCII wants is to earn money selling software through its
internet server. Benefits for selling computers will be very small.

By the way, I did not only to hear during the interview. One of the
problems exposed by Yamashita is the VDP: they doubt between use a VDP
at the same speed, so the new machine will be unusable (4Mb VRAM with a so
slow VDP is a nonsense), or put a new VDP four times faster but
incompatible with old software. I proposed a solution: enable Z80 to
directly access VRAM by mapping it into its addressing space as if it
were normal VRAM (same thing is done by Ademir Carchano's ADVRAM ). It
seems that they had not though on this solution and they liked it a lot,
so if the new MSX uses this system you know who you must thank! ;-)

Wednesday 23 at 13:00 (Tokyo hour) I'll return to ASCII to speak again
with Yamashita, Yokoi and Gotou. If you have any suggestion, send me via
email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] (don't use the mailing list, because there will
be a discussion with thousands of messages about the characteristics
which the new MSX should incorporate).

Regards.

Re[2]: Z380 News

2000-07-04 Thread Néstor Soriano

Say that Konamiman finished the version 3 for the Z380 BIOS (Eprom).
I just recorded the Eprom and tested it successfully.
This is really interesting. What will exactly this z380 BIOS do? and
 where
 can
find more information (specs) about that z380 board?

This BIOS enables you to :
- Access Z380 from a MSX program (for Z380 main memory data read or
write, or to make Z380 to execute a program previously load into its
memory), using a set of routines called ZBIOS.
- Access MSX hardware resources (MSX memory and ports, disk access, etc)
from a Z380 program, using a "hardware server" mechanism (Z380 puts a
Z80 code in biport, MSX executes it, and writes any result also in
biport so Z380 can recover it). The user can either make Z80 to execute
its own code, or use a set of built-in routines included in EPROM (for
basic operations like byte read/write from/to MSX memory, same with
ports, block transfer between MSX and Z380, MSX routine execution, etc).
- Memory can be reserved for the user in the base frame (the first 64K
space on Z380 RAM), so standard programs will never access to any memory
reserved by other programs. Currently there is no way to permanently
reserve memory outside of the base frame; an external (loaded from disk
and not from EPROM) memory manager should be developped for this.
- User CALLs can be installed without limitation (well, the size of the
Z380 memory is the only limit). ZBIOS includes routines to easily
extract the input parameters (and set the output parameters) for these
CALLs.
- Also, new user ZBIOS commands can be added; note that ZBIOS commands
can be used both from a MSX program and from a Z380 program.

You have to use this 1kB ram to exchange data with z80 and z380 right?
 Is
 there
another way to exchange data (z80 can access the z380 ram)? If not, if
 you
 only
access 1kB, wouldn't this slowed down too much when you transfer many
 bytes?

There is no way to communicate MSX with Z380 apart from the biport
memory, and yes: large block transfers must be done through several 1K
(actually about 900 bytes) size transfers. But normally you will not
transfer data between MSX and Z380 except for disk access or VRAM
transfers, so the speed of the transfer should not be critical.

That's great. It would be nice to have some documentation about how to
 write
 software
to this z380 board. Is there anyone available?

Wait a little please. Now that EPROM is definitively finished, I started
to write documentation and some samples. I'm writing it directly in
english to save translation time. 8-)

Re: Happy End in Salamander

2000-05-15 Thread Néstor Soriano

I am not too sure if this is 100% correct

Sure: it is not correct. 8-)

The prediction chapters can be found always, even if you have not
Nemesis 2 in the other slot.

The chapter of Eioneus and Kierke (the first and the third planet you
can choose, respectively) tell you how to kill the boss of the current
stage, concretely they say the color of the nucleus you must shoot at.

The chapter of Kierke (the second planet on the list, the metal fortress)
tells you how to kill the last boss of the game (the one appearing after
the "big eye" in the last stage), again by revealing the colour of the
nucleus to be shooted at.

In the last planet there is also a prediction chapter. It says something
about that you must a crystal to defeat the eveil. ¿And how to find
this crystal? Well, just insert Nemesis 2 in slot 2 and search along
Eioneus and Kierke: the crystal is hidden somewhere in one of these
planets but you will not find it if you have not Nemesis 2 inserted. And
of course you can't play Operation X without Nemesis 2 inserted (BTW
this stage has not prediction chapter at all). In fact, if you try to
cheat MSX to make Salamander think that there is Nemesis 2 in slot 2
without actually having anything (there is a poke for this), Operation X
will appear, but graphics will be just white blocks! It is funny! ;-)

So as you can see, the order in which you select the planets is not
important for finishing the game (the prediction does not tell anything
about the battle in sequence as you say, but about a concrete monster).

(It was a long ago the last time I finished this game)

Also me. But a Konami Man can't forget such things. ;-)

 I recommend
to play the game in a .DSK file, with a poke to be invicible. Then, move
your ship EVERYWHERE in EVERY stage...

Nah! CHICKEN!!! X-D

Play Salamander without any poke if you are man enough!! X-) (sorry
girls, no offence!) (^^!)

The places where you find those "chapters" are like the places you find the
 secret weapons in Nemesis 3!!

The chapter of Lavinia is always in the same place: after the scroll
goes upside down and when it starts to go from left to right again, you
will find a laser shooting base in the floor. Destroy it and enter in
the hole it left in the floor when exploding.

 Good luck

Yep, you will need it! ;-)

Re[2]: ID and SCSI Interfaces

1999-04-04 Thread Néstor Soriano

Who knows if it is possible to use an IDE and SCSI interfaces at the
same time on an MSX and copy from one hard disk to other.

 Yep, you can do it.

Better results are obtained when SCSI is placed in a slot with smaller number
than IDE, so it boots first (well, it happens with MegaSCSI).

 is same.
So, Have same one "bug" in xbasic area. It happen with xbasic

Maybe the xbasic wasn't work properly in DOS-2, only DOS-1.
I think, maybe will be need study and adapt the xbasic area in
the nbasic to work in DOS-2 properly.
