Specificly...?

I still don't understand why it's a problem, you see. And I want to know.

What happens that makes the TSR get terminated? Are all the hooks cleared
upon entry to Basic?

No. It has to do with the way in which MSXDOS.SYS (which is loaded in high
area of memory) manages the DOS memory.

We would still have the problem that the TSR management routines must be
loaded in BASIC environment. But indeed, in that case, you need to go to
BASIC only once in stead of many times. But then again, if you load memman,
you also need to go to BASIC only once. And in that case you do not only have

Would that give enough info to create a music editor which can handle
this fileformat or e.g an import filter for MB? I'm pretty curious

Yep, but most of the TSR's will use the memmory management of memman
also, so if you seperate those routine most of the current TSRs won't
work anymore (and I doubt if somenone will rewrite them.)

That's why MemMan TSR management rules. If we could extract that TSR
management system and adapt it for DOS2 only, we wouldn't have that problem.

I wish you much success with writing a TSR initialization routine that runs
under DOS and does not need to go back to BASIC but loads the code in such a
way that it is not destroyed when the user eventually goes to BASIC anyway.

I myself have never been able to do so. Just take for example R800-drive. You
can only load it from BASIC. And the only reason that I never made a DOS .COM
version of it is exactly because, by my knowledge, it is impossible to
properly load a TSR under DOS.

I think it's lazy to go to Basic to intialize, from Basic you need to
continue doing something (bult-in use of keyboardbuffer) when MemMan is
loaded. Setting up the system for MemMan is much work and slows down the
boot-up process. Besides, you always see the message MemMan has been
installed. It should help if you could switch off the printing part. Allas,
you cannot.

switch it off.

Because even when it happens in a non-visible way, it's still not a nice

AFAIK, there is the ONLY way in which a TSR can be loaded. It is due to
an incomplete design of MSX-DOS (makers did not though on page 3 memory
reservation...) However it is posible to avoid the BASIC exit messages

Well. MemMan introduced a very good TSR management system. I wonder if that
system could be extracted from MemMan and initialize it the silent way you
describe. If I'd have the sources for MemMan, I'd really try to either
create a silent way without switching to Basic or use the TSR management
system initialized the silent way. I think that wouldn't be too hard... Ah,
it certainly is so nice to dream... :)
