Set the compatibility level of the database to 80 ie the 2000 version. 2. See if you have installed the latest service packs, as tons of performance and security related issues have been fixed. 3. Probably try using a gateway. i.e. the machine from where u r connecting should be not accessing net via a proxy. rather a direct machine. even a machine with a dial-up connection would do. and then try registering sql server of the ip that u want to use. I faced the same prob. this solved it.
