Re: [mb-style] MultipleTitleStyle not to be used to actually separate titles?
I think we should follow the formatting that the artist has chosen. Some titles would look stupid if / were replaced with / . If someone comes along and fixes stuff that isn't broken, add an annotation or raise the release quality to high once it actually is of hight quality. Now, I'm wondering if MultipleTitleStyle is limited to these two very specific cases? I see it used all the time by pretty much everyone to separate two or more titles (the way the name of the guideline implies), regardless of how the music itself is structured, or if the release is a re-release of two earlier albums. So, case in point.[1] A movie has a score track playing during two scenes that follow each other, the track itself however doesn't have any obvious places where one ends and another starts. Tracks name is Miyagi's Father Dies/Father's Funeral. Does the MultipleTitleStyle apply? If no, then how are the titles to be separated? Slash without spaces will likely create confusion and unnecessary edits when other people come in and fix the title. I haven't seen any guidelines for anything related to this, but maybe I'm not just looking in the right place? If yes, then it looks like the guideline needs some rewriting and examples to proper examples. I also saw that there was some (very little) discussion about this in the style page, but it appears to be mostly more than a year old, atleast. I'm of the opinion that we should always use 'space splash space' when separating titles, regardless of the music itself. It just makes more sense to me, anything else would just overcomplicate things. Discuss. Philip I don't think the missing spaces count as artist intent, and I don't see a reason why it should be preferred over the version with spaces. Without spaces it looks funny, because it looks like Miyagi's Father (Dies/Father's) Funeral but rather should be (Miyagi's Father Dies)/(Father's Funeral). So yes, I think it should be separated bei / just as MultipleTitleStyle suggests. -- Philipp Wolfer ___ Musicbrainz-style mailing list Musicbrainz-style@lists.musicbrainz.org http://lists.musicbrainz.org/mailman/listinfo/musicbrainz-style

Philip I don't think the missing spaces count as artist intent, You only know what the ArtistIntent is if you ask the artist, which is on a case by case basis :). In general, for 'normal' releases I do not object to adding spaces between two titles which are clearly seperate song titles. But when dealing with certain artists, ConsistentOriginalData should be applied and the tracks should be copied from the sleeve verbatim. For example, you definitely do not want to add spaces to the slashes in this track title: http://musicbrainz.org/track/95f5b438-0dfe-4061-bbc2-c12612ca1f60.html Ofcourse, this is just a single 'song' which just happens to have three forward slashes in the song title. There are probably examples of seperate songs which, by virtue of ConsistentOriginalData also do not get any extra spaces. But this doesn't need to be part of the MultipleTitleStyle guideline, as ConsistentOriginalData already trumps that. -- kuno / warp. ___ Musicbrainz-style mailing list Musicbrainz-style@lists.musicbrainz.org http://lists.musicbrainz.org/mailman/listinfo/musicbrainz-style

It's not a completely different topic, for some tracks it may be difficult to determine if the slashes in a track title are intended as seperators of different song titles or are part of a single song title. I chose this example as one where it is clear that you're dealing with a single song, but it won't always be this obvious. Someone not familiar with Autechre for example, could interpret http://musicbrainz.org/track/7cf93d50-d0f4-457d-801a-57f2667fc56b.html as two seperate song titles (either way the title is mostly meaningless). But, I believe in most cases where it is unclear, ConsistentOriginalData will apply. So you don't have to worry about figuring out if MultipleTitleStyle applies or not, because ConsistentOriginalData will trump it anyway. -- kuno / warp. ___ Musicbrainz-style mailing list Musicbrainz-style@lists.musicbrainz.org http://lists.musicbrainz.org/mailman/listinfo/musicbrainz-style
[mb-style] Basset clarinet
How can Basset clarinet[1] be added to the list of available instruments for ARs? I thought there was a process for this, but for the life of me, I can't find it. And before you ask, as I found out today, a Basset clarinet is not a Basset horn. :) [1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basset_Clarinet Cheers, Andrew ___ Musicbrainz-style mailing list Musicbrainz-style@lists.musicbrainz.org http://lists.musicbrainz.org/mailman/listinfo/musicbrainz-style
Re: [mb-style] Basset clarinet
Oh, goodness, please forgive my mistake. I had meant to delete this, not send it. I ended up finding Basset clarinet in the list (that search can be subtly difficult sometimes).
