Re: font setting

Yes thats what the default intention was :(
Is there any plans for mutt to release this kind of font/html support ?
Anyother way to do this or any other mail client which I could use

Do you mean you want to set it so that the *recipient* sees the underlining,
blue test, c.?  If that is what you mean, then it sounds like you want to
send email in HTML format, which I’m pretty certain mutt doesn’t do.

Yes I did it.
On the linux server where i run mutt :

bash-3.00$ date
Wed Jan 6 08:44:40 IST 2010

Now from within mutt, if I check a recent mail's header, I see this :
..
Date: Wed, 6 Jan 2010 00:44:27 -0800
..

I just have
export TZ=IST
in my .bashrc.

Both the dates(from bash and from within mutt) are wrong
when I see from my windows m/c.
It rightly shows - Jan-6-2010 2:15 PM ! whichis the correct time now

Your perl version is from 1993! Did you get that from a museum on tape? :-)

Seriously, I don't think we should/need/do support something older than
perl 5.003. With perl 4 I think your only options is to not build docs
at all (edit top-level Makefile and remove 'doc' from the SUBDIRS and
DIST_SUBDIRS lines) (or remove the perl call in doc/Makefile.am and live
 with partial documentation).

If you do a google search for that error, you will find this:
 http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5077618

I guess what has happened is that you're using a gcc compiler that
was built on Solaris 9 (or some other Solaris release older than
Solaris 10 b69), and this gcc release has a set of fixed gcc
specific headers that don't match your s10b69 system headers any
     more.

The fix is to build a fresh set of gcc fixed headers:

     # cd /opt/sfw/gcc-3/lib/gcc-lib/i386-pc-solaris2.9/3.3.2/install-tools/
     # cat mkheaders.conf
     SHELL=/bin/sh
     SYSTEM_HEADER_DIR=/usr/include
     OTHER_FIXINCLUDES_DIRS=
     FIXPROTO_DEFINES=-D_XOPEN_SOURCE
     STMP_FIXPROTO=stmp-fixproto
     STMP_FIXINC=stmp-fixinc
     ^D

     # ./mkheaders

Obviously, on your system the paths are slightly different, but I'm
guessing that the problem is the same and the fix is probably very
 similar too.

What's the point of a sig *not* at the end of an email? That would make it
 something completely different wouldn't it?

The problem is if its a lengthy email thread with many people replying
ontop of each other, when I now write a mail
my sig., will be the last line in that email, and doesn';t make sense
as to where I ended the email

Re: ask for pwd

Ahhh. Well then, I think you can simply create a macro to unset your
$smtp_pass variable every time you send a message, e.g.:

 macro compose y 'send-messageenter-commandunset smtp_passenter'

Can this be changed to ask for pwd if mailbox is idle for sometime, typing
password for each send operation is time consuming, once in a while is fine.

Re: ask for pwd

Yea I meant password.
I used to use PGP signing with mutt and when we hit 'y' used to ask
our password before sending.
Now that I removed PGP signing and it doesn't ask for password

Ask for a pwd? Mutt can't even *change* its pwd (without a patch).

Why would you want mutt to do that? What are you trying to accomplish?

Using my context sensitive parsing of SMSpeak[1], I presume he means password.

That's awfully small. You can make them bigger (e.g. timeout=300,
imap_keepalive=60, or even larger). I know the man page makes it sound
like timeout really needs to be extra small, but don't sweat it. The

and the latency of your connection, it could easily take longer than
that to complete a check for mail! I know mail admins that get grumpy
when people check their email even every 5 minutes, due to all the
network traffic they generate. When you're checking a file on disk,
well, you can check that pretty dang often without a performance
effect. But over the network? You may be causing your own problem by
 having such small timeouts.

Generally, I would say: stick with the default values unless you have
a reason to change them (the defaults weren't chosen by morons).
Chances are, you can probably leave $timeout at 600. Give the defaults
a try, and go from there.

Generally, over IMAP, the *best* way to do it is to use IMAP's IDLE
extension. What happens is that the IMAP server will *notify* you when
you get mail, rather than having you constantly ask it now? how about
now? now? now? what about now?, and mutt fully supports the IDLE
feature (better than some IMAP servers do, actually).

Anyway, I don't know where the 10 minute default came from in the
beginning, but I think it's quite reasonable.

Outlook does it every 20 secs or lesser.

 No, I'm afraid you're mistaken.

 http://email.about.com/od/outlookexpresstips/qt/et052206.htm says:

Decide on how often you want Windows Mail or Outlook Express to
look for new mail. Typical values are between 10 and 60 minutes.

 www.outlook-tips.net/beginner/autosr.htm says:

You should not check it more often than every 8 -10 min because it
creates too much load on your mail server and a large amount of
mail will cause some versions of Outlook to hang if it is still
downloading mail when the next automatic mail pass starts.

I also just loaded up my copy of VirtualBox to check out Microsoft
Outlook 2000 myself. The default setting for new accounts is to check
for new messages every 10 minutes, and it's *impossible* to change
that setting to less than 1 minute (you can see a screen shot of the

And its better to get your mails fast then wait for 10mins..

Ummm, okay... I think if someone has something that important to say,
they should use a medium other than email (such as the phone). Email
transmission can easily introduce delays of several minutes, long
before you even have the chance to receive it.

Since I use mutt in a corporate n/w, it doesnt matter if its
 10secs/20secs.

The speed of your network doesn't matter. What matters is the load and
response time of your IMAP server. I know mail admins (good ones) that
have warned their users against checking mail more often than every 5
minutes, despite the fact that most of their clients use a full-duplex
100 Base-T ethernet connection to connect to the server (and some use
gigabit). It's not necessarily the bandwidth, but also the disk I/O -
when you've got 20+ people all checking their entire folder
hierarchies constantly, that can kill your server.

Just as an experiment, see how long it takes for the following command
to kill your computer (or just imagine it; trust me, your computer
 will quickly become unusable):

while true; do find $HOME /dev/null done

 ...or, even more fun:

 while true; do
 find $HOME -type f -exec tail {} \; /dev/null
 done

Now, granted, there are ways that you may be able to mitigate the
problem, and let's not get into questions of how powerful and/or
efficient and/or well-configured your mail server is. The fact of the
matter is: checking your mail that quickly (every few seconds) over
and over again is not only uncommon, but generally a really bad
 idea---even on a corporate network.

Well most commonly all your terminals(PCs) will be wired to a VLAN operating
over a catalyst giga-bit switches. It has the capacity to switch
packets at x-gigs per secs and we
are here talking of kb's of mail data. Its negligence IMO.

- Ravi

If you really MUST have your mail that fast (assuming your IMAP server
doesn't support the IDLE command), then a better option would be to
have your email forwarded to your local computer as it comes in, so
you can check your inbox as often as you want without causing anyone
 else any trouble.

Which is EXACTLY WHAT I SAID. It's impossible to set it to less than 1
minute. You said you were configuring your Outlook to check every 20
seconds, which is technically impossible by your own admission.

I also spoke with network-admin and he confirmed its in the order of

60 seconds is on the order of secs.

Practically, I also asked my colleague to send me a email. And within
20-30secs it was there in my Outlook.

That's got nothing to do with anything. The 20-30 second delay could
easily be how long it takes to deliver email, and Outlook could easily
be using the IMAP IDLE extension (or whatever the equivalent is in the
MAPI protocol), which would mean that the mail client gets notified
the very moment that email arrives.

Mutt also supports the IDLE extension, and can do the exact same thing
you just observed Outlook do, and mutt can do that even with $timeout
set to 600, because IDLE doesn't rely on the client re-checking for
new email. IDLE *informs* the client of new mail *unasked*. It can be
thought of as a push protocol.

Let me say that again: the IDLE extension means that your client tells
the server let me know when new mail comes, which is different from
 periodically checking for new mail.

Well most commonly all your terminals(PCs) will be wired to a VLAN
operating over a catalyst giga-bit switches. It has the capacity to
switch packets at x-gigs per secs and we are here talking of kb's of
 mail data. Its negligence IMO.

sigh You didn't read what I wrote. I'm talking about load on the
server, not bandwidth. The fanciness of your network is *irrelevant*
 to my point.

Mutt's IMAP code didn't (until *very* recently) always behave itself

So unless you're following the hg devel tree pretty closely, I
strongly recommend that you put $timeout back where it was and reduce

The message was cryptographically signed. If you have the public key
corresponding to the private key it was signed with (you can get this
public key e.g. from a public key server), mutt can invoke a
cryptographic program on your system (e.g. GnuPG) to verify that the
signature was made with the private key corresponding to the public
 key you have.

Whether the real-life identity of the person who claims to have sent
the e-mail in fact is the only one having access to that private key
is something that you would need to verify independently, and you
should really google for that (e.g. web of trust).

Do we need anything to have it setup in our mutt..

 Yes.

Or do we need PGP at all ??

That depends on what you mean by need.

In that link I didn't find a way to add this request.. If anyone can
add the care ticket request that would be great !

Please add this wish to http://dev.mutt.org/trac/ticket/3064. Maybe it'll be
easy to implement another command such as save that will print the
contents to a file rather then a paged menu.

auto-move mails

2008-07-24 Thread Ravi Uday
Hi,

In mutt 1.5.17 is there a way we can setup a rule where if the number
of emails touches 150 move the first 50 to a specified folder ?
We can then map this rule witha key too ?

Thanks,

Just to add to this,

If there is a way to retrieve your ~/.muttrc from a existing mutt
session, please let me know. That would help too as my
.muttrc is deleted :(

TIA,
Ravi

When I select a different folders using 'c' and '?' it starts to load

Is there a way to bypass/cache this and make mutt load the folder faster ?

threaded view

2008-05-14 Thread Ravi Uday
Hi guys,

I have these

set sort=threads
set duplicate_threads=yes

If someone replies to a threaded message how to make it display at the
bottom/latest in the index view ?
I mean if the thread is really old and if someone now replies to that,
it gets buried somewhere :(

coloring body

2008-04-30 Thread Ravi Uday
Hi,

I have this in my .muttrc

color body blueblack ((To:) .*)|((Cc:) .*)

This does the job for one line. But most of the times To / Cc will be
extending to next 2-3 line due to long listings of names.
Is there a way to color entire To/Cc field list ?

Hi,

1. In the header of the recvd mail, how to make each mail address
different color and
reflect the same color in the body of the mail if it(the
name/address) appears there. ?

2. When we reply ('g'/'r'), oriiginal mail will prepend each line with
'', how to make it show
'--' instead

Sorry if these questions are asked before !

config.log should have the details. Try looking for checking whether

You haven't specified which sunos you are running. Locate the iconv
 library by

 $ cat /var/sadm/install/contents | grep libiconv.so

You will have to set LD_LIBRARY_PATH appropriately. Chances are that
it's in /opt/csw/lib . If you don't have one, you can get one from
 companion (sunfreeware.com).
