Re: [Nagios-users] Message Subject - PROBLEM Service Alert: hostname is UP (fixed)
Quoting Terry Carmen te...@cnysupport.com: I've been receiving a continuous stream of these messages and can't seem to figure out why or make them stop. Nagios is sending repeated notifications that various hosts are up even though they have never been down. I've googled a number of similar problems, but unfortunately no applicable solutions. Does anybody have any ideas what I could check? Here's an update: I found a seemingly unrelated problem. I had duplicated the notify-host-by-email command into the notify-service-by-email command. While this accounted for the inappropriate message content, fixing it seems to have also fixed the repeating notifications (haven't received any in a while). No idea why fixing the invalid message text would also fix the repeating notifications, but it seems OK now. I'm posting the answer here in case anybody else runs into this problem. The lines below are working nicely on a system that uses postfix as the mailer. This also takes care of postix's sendmail not respecting the -s (subject) command line option. The macros below add the subject to the message. // from commands.cfg /// # 'notify-host-by-email' command definition define command{ command_namenotify-host-by-email command_line/usr/bin/printf %b Subject: ** $NOTIFICATIONTYPE$ Host Alert: $HOSTNAME$ is $HOSTSTATE$ **\n\n* Nagios *\n\nNotification Type: $NOTIFICATIONTYPE$\nHost: $HOSTNAME$\nState: $HOSTSTATE$\nAddress: $HOSTADDRESS$\nInfo: $HOSTOUTPUT$\n\nDate/Time: $LONGDATETIME$\n\nService: $SERVICECHECKCOMMAND$Host Output: [$HOSTOUTPUT$]\n\nHost Output (Long): $LONGHOSTOUTPUT$\n\nPerformance Data: $HOSTPERFDATA$\n\n | /usr/sbin/sendmail -f nag...@example.com $CONTACTEMAIL$ } # 'notify-service-by-email' command definition define command{ command_namenotify-service-by-email command_line/usr/bin/printf %b Subject: ** $NOTIFICATIONTYPE$ alert - $HOSTALIAS$/$SERVICEDESC$ is $SERVICESTATE$ **\n\n* Nagios @VERSION@ *\n\nNotification Type: $NOTIFICATIONTYPE$\n\nService: $SERVICEDESC$\nHost: $HOSTALIAS$\nAddress: $HOSTADDRESS$\nState: $SERVICESTATE$\n\nDate/Time: $LONGDATETIME$\n\nService Output: $SERVICEOUTPUT$\n\nLong Service Output: $LONGSERVICEOUTPUT$\n\nAdditional Info:\n\n$OUTPUT$ | /usr/sbin/sendmail -f nag...@example.com $CONTACTEMAIL$ } -- Achieve unprecedented app performance and reliability What every C/C++ and Fortran developer should know. Does anybody have any ideas what I could check? I would find the relevant host entry in the file /usr/local/nagios/var/objects.cache, then make sure you understand all the directives in that host definition - by all means post it here too if you want a group opinion. Check that you don't have more than one contact defined having the same email address. Also, check the status history for that host and see if anything is happening in-between those times when it is UP. Maybe it's going DOWN in-between but you're just not getting the DOWN alerts! It would be useful to know a bit more about what you're seeing, for example are these repeat emails occurring with a particular frequency? Do you get a whole bunch of them at once and then none for a while? Do they eventually stop and if so after how many repeats? hth, Jim -- Achieve unprecedented app performance and reliability What every C/C++ and Fortran developer should know. Hello All... I am seeing an odd problem host status and retention after reloads and I am wondering if anyone else has seen this and possibly knows of a fix it... When I disable notifications for a host via the UI the command completes and I see that notifications are indeed disabled, notifications stop, etc... However when I reload Nagios the notifications are re-enabled. This is only showing up with host checks, service check state is retained after a reload. I can see the status.dat file change however the retention.dat always stays the same ( notifications_enabled=0 ). I am not even sure if that is it or not, or if this is a permissions issue or some kind. Also, this has worked with this build in the past. It stopped working a short time ago... Any help would be greatly appreciated... Dear Sire, How can we configure into nagios dynamic thresholds depending on timeframes. Example. -w = 80 -c = 90 during business hours but -w = 90 -c = 95 outsite business hours. How can we configure into nagios dynamic thresholds depending on timeframes: Part II define service{ use local-service ; Name of service template to use host_name localhost service_description Current Users check_command check_local_users!20!50 check_period nonworkhours notification_period nonworkhours } define service{ use local-service ; Name of service template to use host_name localhost service_description Current Users check_command check_local_users!40!60 check_period workhours notification_period workhours } In my above example i dit configure the same test twice. The two timeframes 'nonworkhours' en 'workhours' together equals 24x7 Is this way of configuring allowed. Because this solves my problem. 1) how will the nagios scheduling react on this configuration? 2) how will the display react on this configuration? # 'workhours' timeperiod definition define timeperiod{ timeperiod_name workhours alias Normal Working Hours monday 09:00-17:00 tuesday 09:00-17:00 wednesday 09:00-17:00 thursday09:00-17:00 friday 09:00-17:00 } # 'nonworkhours' timeperiod definition define timeperiod{ timeperiod_name nonworkhours alias Non-Work Hours sunday 00:00-24:00 monday 00:00-09:00,17:00-24:00 tuesday 00:00-09:00,17:00-24:00 wednesday 00:00-09:00,17:00-24:00 thursday00:00-09:00,17:00-24:00 friday 00:00-09:00,17:00-24:00 saturday00:00-24:00 } check_period: This directive is used to specify the short name of the time period during which active checks of this host can be made. check_period: This directive is used to specify the short name of the time period during which active checks of this service can be made. If you do not use the check_period directive to specify a timeperiod, Nagios will be able to schedule active checks of the host or service anytime it needs to. This is essentially a 24x7 monitoring scenario. Specifying a timeperiod in the check_period directive allows you to restrict the time that Nagios perform regularly scheduled, active checks of the host or service. When Nagios attempts to reschedule a host or service check, it will make sure that the next check falls within a valid time range within the defined timeperiod. If it doesnt, Nagios will adjust the next check time to coincide with the next valid time in the specified timeperiod. This means that the host or service may not get checked again for another hour, day, or week, etc. Timeperiods: Exclusions and Host/Service Checks - There is a bug in the service/host check scheduling logic that rears its head when you use timeperiod definitions that use the excludedirective. The problem occurs when Nagios Core tries to re-schedule the next check. In this case, the scheduling logic may incorrectly schedule the next check further out in the future than it should. In essence, it skips over the (missing) logic where it could determine an earlier possible time using the exception times. Imperfect Solution: Dont use timeperiod definitions that exclude other timeperods for your host/service check periods. A fix is being worked on, and will hopefully make it into a 3.4.x release. I personally like using the hostname first, then the service. Something like this for example: adams : RAM is in a CRITICAL state! It makes it easier for me to sort alerts in Outlook that way (I have a rule sending all alerts to a separate folder), so I can see everything going on with a particular server, for example. Or to view how long a certain alert has been going on. I also changed the default output to HTML for easier reading (because I send alerts both to Instant Messenger and also email). Not sure if this will come out nicely (still in HTML format) through the mailing list, but here is a sample: *Alert Type * PROBLEM *Hostname * adams http://nagios.mycompany.com/cgi-bin/status.cgi?host=adams(Database Server) *Address * 912.267.822.2 *Service * RAM http://nagios.mycompany.com/pnp/index.php?host=adamssrv=RAM *State * CRITICAL *Time * Thu May 6 11:17:27 EDT 2010 *Info * RAM CRITICAL - 3% (7 of 196 MB) free *Inventory * View Host http://myinventory.mycompany.com/inventory/view?hostname=adams *RT * Ticketshttp://myrtserver.mycompany.com/Search/Results.html?ClearRestrictions=1Query=Status%20%21%3D%20%22resolved%22%20AND%20Content%20LIKE%20%22adams%22 It is hyperlinked to Nagios (host view, then service view), as well as to this host in the inventory system and to the ticketing system (see all touble tickets related to this host). It seems to be something in the way Apache handles PHP. Since there's no PHP code in the index.php page, we've found here that just renaming it to index.html brings back the old behavior. However, the attempts of checking (1/4,2/4,3/4 and 4/4 - change of state) were registered in the archive nagios.log. I've got the same setup using postfix (glorified snedmail) that I use here. I think I even have documentation lying around somewhere. It's trivially easy to set up the mta. Joshua, You have to configure the MTA on the nagios box to send the notifications to your exchange server. There's nothing to do in Nagios except having a mail command available to the notification script (mailx on ubuntu). I am trying to print the time it was in a down state. I tried the $LASTHOSTDOWN$ macro but it is in time_t format. I tried $HOSTDURATIONSEC$ but the documentation says it prints the number of seconds a host has been in it's current state (0 seconds when a host comes up). I was to print how long it was down. I'm also going to want to do this for services. I will try the command line fu that was suggested. Tjin I've had the same issue a while back , the problem is that the mysql NDO configuration still has the definitions of the old definitions. what you an try - and it worked for me - is this : Stop mysql . stop nagios . change the configuration to the new one you need . start nagios . Start mysql . this will have ndo read the current config and use that as the base line . Hello all, I am a new poster to the nagios mailing list; however, I have used nagios for a number of years now. I am having an issue where the status and extinfo CGIs stop updating. Our west coast nagios setup consists of one physical master server, and one physical slave server. The slave server runs 5 nagios instances, each with approximately 500 - 1000 service checks. All total, we have 3400 service checks being accepted by the master. We are currently running nagios 3.0.1. The os/arch/type is CentOS5, x86_64, and each server has 8 intel cores and 16GB of RAM. We were experiencing extremely high latency in our service checks (thousands and thousands and thousands of seconds) and realized that this was primarily due to the serial nature of nsca. Sending each service check result individually back to the master would take seconds each, and the slave check queues would back up behind that process. We did a little poking around and installed the ocsp sweeper from nagios exchange, which immediately cured our performance issues. Now, however, we experience very strange behavior: some handful of hours after each nagios restart, the webUI CGIs will stop displaying accurate performance information (services passively checked for 1 min - 1 hr report 0, and only the 'since program start' reports a number) and - more troubling - the status CGI does not update. Has anyone experienced this issue before? Thanks. Linux server. The common link between all the scenarios we have tried is the Linux server and the sendmail transfer agent. Does anyone on the list send Sounds like it's just a normal e-mail to a specific address, correct? Yes, as far as Linux/Nagios is concerned they are standard messages to SMTP addresses. Have you verified that sendmail is behaving itself as a normal mail server on the Internet? It has valid public reverse DNS? Forward DNS matches reverse DNS? HELO name is a valid FQDN, preferably matching reverse DNS for the IP? What do your sendmail logs show? Is there a bounce generated? We use the same Nagios command to send successfully to the SMS addresses ([EMAIL PROTECTED] vs [EMAIL PROTECTED] for MMS) of the same phones (i.e. using the same SMTP servers to get out). The sendmail logs show the messages as being delivered Okay. I did some testing, I'm trying different things to try and discover where the problem lies. Test: Send 10 messages from old RH/sendmail box to MMS address of cell phone, Send 10 messages from new RH/sendmail box to MMS address of cell phone, Send 10 messages from windows box (with sendmail port) to the MMS address of cell phone. All messages are sent one after another from the command line. Results: Usually all 10 of the messages from the Windows box come through, though not always. Some of the Linux generated messages come through I've gotten as many as 4 and as few as none. The new versus old versions of Linux and Sendmail do not seem to make a difference. The messages will come through on occasion but not consistently. Not good for a monitoring solution. I should rephrase my original questions: Is anyone else using MMS to receive Nagios alerts? Do you ever notice any alerts not getting to your phone? What provider are you using? Re: [Nagios-users] (no subject)
G, When I installed NRPE recently I used the xinetd installation, whereas it looks like you're utilising the nrpe in daemon mode. Therefore I may not be of as much help here, but I would check things such as SeLinux configuration (try putting it in warn mode and see whether you still get this error) and iptables configuration on the box. When I performed this test, I actually only did it from the Nagios monitoring hosts (as that was indicative of my requirements), you might want to check that test as well.
