2008-07-21 Thread Mark Johnson

Cherryhurst Park

Monthly Meeting
Cherryhurst Park Community Center
1700 Missouri St
Houston, TX 77006

July 22, 2008, 7:00 p.m.

Pastor Robert Robertson from Bethel Baptist Church will speak to the
Neartown Assocation about College Park Cemetery, and will show us the
plan for the restoration of the historic cemetary, which is curently
underway at 3500 West Dallas.

The cemetery is the final resting place of the Reverend Jack Yates.
Yates, a former slave, taught the virtues of land ownership among the
newly emancipated, worked as a drayman, was an ordained minister and
founded Antioch Missionary Baptist Church and Bethel Baptist Church.

We will be looking at the cemetery restoration in the contest of the
larger greenspace plan for Neartown.

[Neartown] Trees Avaialble In Hyde Park

2009-06-01 Thread Mark Johnson

Cherryhurst Park

Trees Available In Hyde Park
This News Item was posted June 1, 2009 and will continue through June
30, 2009.

The City of Houston has provided Neartown residents with 100 free
hardwood trees (74 remaining) for streetside planting.

There are two requirements:

the trees must be planted in the right-of-way, and
the new owner must water and feed the trees until established -
usually two years.
There is no limit on the number of trees as long as there is
sufficient planting space available. Species include bur oak, willow
oak, water oak, sawtooth oak, sweetgum, pecan, cedar elm, winged elm
and bald cypress.

For specific questions or to arrange for viewing and pickup, contact
Kathy Schipper at kathleenca...@sbcglobal.net.

The address is 1118 California, a green house located one block north
and one block west of the intersection of Montrose and Westheimer
(behind Mary's Lounge). The gate is locked.

We've planted over 1200 trees in the last seven years. This is the
last giveaway I am doing. Historically they go fast once the word gets
out.

[Neartown] New Items section added to Neartown.org website

2009-06-01 Thread Mark Johnson
FYI, I have added a new section to the Neartown.org website that
allows for the posting of news items for the Neartown community. The
first item was posted this morning.

The items appear under the "Community" button, but also pop up when
you first go to neartown.org, and also appear in the left column when
you go to the Home button. Items have a listing and an end-listing
date, so only current news items of interest will show appear, making
site maintenance easier.

Please email me if you have an item you want posted.

Thanks,

To ensure consideration of your neighborhood’s SNAP Request, please submit your
civic club SNAP requests by midnight Friday January 8, 2010. We expect that the
number of requests we are permitted to submit will be limited; therefore we
need to compile all requests so that we can discuss any issues at the SNAP
Review Meeting.

[Neartown] Trees Available From City of Houston

2010-03-09 Thread Mark Johnson

Cherryhurst Park

Trees Available From City of Houston
The City of Houston Urban Forestry Department has gifted Neartown residents
with (50) 15-gallon hardwood trees in the following species: Shumard red oak,
Texas Green Ash, Retama (Jerusaleum Thorn), Evergreen elm, Mountain Laurel,
Redbud, Red Maple and Mexican plum.

The trees must be planted on the City right-of-way (or other City property such
as a park or school) and the new owner will sign a form agreeing to water and
feed the tree(s) for a minimum of two years.

These trees are HUGE! A truck is required for transport - and I do not have a
truck. For more information or to set up a time to view the trees, contact
Kathy Schipper at kathleenca...@sbcglobal.net. Hurry and make a decision as
these beauties will go fast!

[Neartown] Fwd: *EMCA* The passing of Bob Farquharson

2010-10-30 Thread Mark Johnson
To all our East Montrose neighbors,

Our good friend and neighbor Bob Farquharson passed away early last Saturday,
October 23rd. His death was sudden and unexpected. His family chose to honor
his passing without public ceremony. Neither a funeral nor a memorial service
is planned at this time.

For those of you who did not know Bob, he was President of the East Montrose
Civic Association for the year 2008. He was a true asset to the community, and
we will all miss him.

Bob's obituary is expected to be in The Houston Chronicle on Sunday, October
31. In case you don't see the newspaper, the following is the text of his
obituary.

--
OBITUARY:

Robert C. Farquharson II, 66, passed away early Saturday morning, October 23,
2010, at his home in the Montrose area, in Houston. He died peacefully in the
arms of his beloved spouse, Bob Mills.

Robert was born in Gulfport, Mississippi on November 30, 1943. He attended
primary and secondary schools on Long Island, New York; Clark University in
Worcester, Massachusetts; Jacksonville University, Jacksonville, Florida, where
he was awarded the Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education; the
University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, where he was awarded the
Master's degree in Educational Administration; and was also admitted to
candidacy for the Doctor of Philosophy degree at the University of Florida. He
maintained numerous academic and professional credentials in teaching,
leadership, management and administration.

Robert enjoyed a long and distinguished career in the field of Education. He
began as an elementary school teacher in Jacksonville, Florida, before moving
to the Houston Independent School District (HISD) in 1970. His many positions
at HISD over the next 34 years began with elementary school teaching and
progressed through assignments as principal of elementary schools, middle
schools and high schools. He eventually became District Executive Director,
HISD Southwest, and Director of Main Event Management Systems Administration.
After officially retiring from his HISD position, Robert taught management and
systems theory for a local consulting firm. Robert continued teaching until his
death, at which time he was an instructor of English as a Second Language with
the Houston Community College.
Robert's accomplishments were even more notable because of the significant
health challenges he faced. In 1998, he was diagnosed with advanced cancer and
given little hope for survival. After enduring extensive chemotherapy,
radiation and massive surgery, he conquered the odds and continued his work.

In addition to occupying various positions of professional leadership, Robert
was a highly respected social leader and community supporter for many years,
serving as President of the East Montrose Civic Association, and representing
the neighborhood in political and social activities. He was the master of the
written and spoken word, and happily shared his wisdom and abilities with all
who asked.

[Neartown] SNAP Items: Final Request.

2011-01-10 Thread Mark Johnson
Dear Neartown Neighbors:

This is the final request for proposals for the 2011 Super Neighborhood Action
Plan (SNAP) submittal process for the Neartown / Montrose SN #24 area. With
Friday the 14th of January upon us as the imposed deadline from the City of
Houston, our 25 priorities for improvement will need to be sent to the Planning
and Development Department by the end of the week. With close to that number
already suggested by Civic Associations and other neighbors in the community,
we have set Wednesday the 12th of January at noon as the cut off for any
additional requests to allow time for us to collate and process the information
received. If you or your organization have any final ideas that should be
made, please forward those to thepresid...@neartown.org account with specific
location and project scope for review and inclusion on our list or to be
addressed with an alternative action. Thanks in advance for your excellent
ideas for improving the great place we live and work in the Neartown / Montrose
area.

Thank you,

David Robinson,
Neartown President

[Neartown] Fwd: [CherryhurstCivicClub] YOU ARE NEEDED THIS THURSDAY!

2011-06-08 Thread Mark Johnson
Cherryhurst neighbors, friends, and revelers--
Great meeting tonight with Council member Wanda Adams and Deputy Parks Director, Doug Earle (among others on those teams).  I think I counted 30 of us tonight.
But to all who were there, all who had to leave, as well as those who couldn't attend, I'm emailing to ask for your help:
We're down to the wire on getting an extension on keeping this community center open for another year, while we come up with a fiscal game plan. Wanda Adams is going to try to negotiate an agreement with the mayor in which the mayor would approve extending our community center's "life" for another year while we come up with a game plan for funding the center. This plan, which might include our filing for 5013C non-profit status, renting the center, possibly splitting operation hours and programs with River Oaks, raising funds, and cutting dollars, would be presented to the Council next year. But the goal for the moment is to buy some time --one year-- and create this plan.
So--- in order to get the mayor to buy in on this, we've got to press on -- with letters and emails and shows of attendance.  The next week or two are critical.  They vote next week.  Wanda Adams said she will push this plan -- that we be granted another year-- but she needs us to put out a great show of support at the Parks Department budget meeting THIS THURSDAY, JUNE 9, AT 2:00.  This is the day for discussing the Parks Department's fiscal budget. (Wanda's assistant is going to do his best to confirm tomorrow that 2PM or so is "roughly" when we'd be discussing the issue so that we're not sitting around all afternoon. He'll get back to us if that changes.)
Wanda beseeched us... implored us BEGGED us to show up in numbers at the Council meeting this Thursday. Without a strong show of support, she loses a lot of leverage.  She said that just saying  "I'm speaking on behalf of X number of my neighbors" does NOT make an impact on the Council; however, Cherryhurst residents showing up and sitting in the audience does. We need to continue to put ourselves on top of the Parks agenda... and the mayor's mind.
The Council should  have the budget decided upon either by the end of THIS week or the end of NEXT week. "Debates" about the proposed budget will be on the 21st, but it will be signed, sealed, and done on June 29.
So, please: show up if you can.  We don't want to see this center boarded up, and our days are numbered for buying time. So far, 5 of us have committed to show up on Thursday (2 or 3 of us are speaking; the other 2 will be there for moral support). However, we need many, many more.
If you can go, and can grab some retirees to go, too, can you let us know?  We will be meeting on the steps of City Hall (by the reflecting pool, on the building's east side) at 1:45.  And for anyone who would like to speak at the meeting, we'll have a very quick meeting tomorrow evening from 6-6:30 at Carol Rensink's just to recap the key points we need to make, according to Wanda Adams.
SO, WHO'S IN?  I'm in, and I'm driving Larry and Lillian.  ANYONE ELSE COMING?  Come on... now's the time.  WE NEED YOU!  FIRE UP THE CHERRIES!

The 80-year-old center building is a fixture in Cherryhurst and the surrounding neighborhoods..   # # #___
