[NetBehaviour] German cops raid Wikileaks after Internet blacklist posted.
German cops raid Wikileaks after Internet blacklist posted. By Julian Sanchez. German police have raided the homes of a man associated with the whistleblower site Wikileaks, as part of an investigation the site claims stems from its recent publication of several countries' secret Internet filtering blacklists. German police on Tuesday raided the homes of Theodor Reppe, owner of the German domain for the controversial whistleblower site Wikileaks. According to Wikileaks itself, police told Reppe he was targeted because of his links to the site, and official documents indicate the search was meant to uncover evidence of distribution of pornographic material. Though Wikileaks itself doesn't host porn, site administrators believe the impetus for the raids may be their recent publication of a secret Australian blacklist of banned sites, which includes the URLs of numerous sites that host child pornography. Police in both Dresden and Jena appear to have coordinated in simultaneous searches of Reppe's residence, and asked him to turn over passwords associated with the Wikileaks.de domain, which they reportedly hoped to disable. But Wikileaks says that Reppe, who also hosts a popular server for the anonymous Tor routing network, is not actively involved with its operations beyond holding the registration for the .de domain and mirroring an archive of Congressional Research Service reports released by the site earlier this year. A more recent leak may have brought the site into police crosshairs: last week the site posted what it claimed were lists of banned websites maintained by the Australian Media and Communications Authority. As part of a much-criticized content filtering scheme, currently in the testing stage, the secret list is distributed to ISPs and the makers of filtering software. more... http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2009/03/german-cops-target-wikileaks.ars ___ NetBehaviour mailing list NetBehaviour@netbehaviour.org http://www.netbehaviour.org/mailman/listinfo/netbehaviour
[NetBehaviour] Building a Brain on a Silicon Chip.
Building a Brain on a Silicon Chip. A chip developed by European scientists simulates the learning capabilities of the human brain. By Duncan Graham-Rowe. An international team of scientists in Europe has created a silicon chip designed to function like a human brain. With 200,000 neurons linked up by 50 million synaptic connections, the chip is able to mimic the brain's ability to learn more closely than any other machine. Although the chip has a fraction of the number of neurons or connections found in a brain, its design allows it to be scaled up, says Karlheinz Meier, a physicist at Heidelberg University, in Germany, who has coordinated the Fast Analog Computing with Emergent Transient States project, or FACETS. more... http://www.technologyreview.com/computing/22339/?a=f ___ NetBehaviour mailing list NetBehaviour@netbehaviour.org http://www.netbehaviour.org/mailman/listinfo/netbehaviour
Re: [NetBehaviour] Ada Lovelace Day, some questions...
Hiya Marc Netbehaviourists, I may of missed some bits of info about the support of Ada Lovelace Day project. So if it is not too painful for you to repeat what might have already been discussed, could I bother you with a couple of questions? One thing I need to know from you is that, when the furtherfield crew compile all of the proposals sent in by everyone tomorrow, is whether after this happens, can subscribers still mail their proposals? The reason I am asking this is because I still have some that I wish to add, and a couple of my friends have just recently subscribed and I am not sure if they will be posting before Friday. The other thing is - I mailed something to the list yesteday (unrelated to Ada Lovelace) and for some reason it did not appear. I remember that someone else had this problem also a couple of days ago. Is there something wrong with the server at all? I wanted to say how much I have been enjoying seeing all of the contributions to Netbehaviour, and I want to thank you and everyone else who has taken part in doing something as special and important as this. I am sure this is going to be a great resource for many in the future - it's very exciting, thanks for making the effort :-) Karen ,__ \/ __ /\^/`\ /o \{}/ o\ SPRING IS IN THE AIR! | \/ | \ () / | || ` /\ ` ,,, \ \/ (o/\/\o){{{}}_ _ '\\//' @@()@@ _ )( ~Y~ _{ ' }_ || _(_)_wWWWw .oOOo. @@()@@ { `.!.` } || ,/ (_)@(_) (___) OO()OO _ ',_/Y\_,' Joan Stark || ,\ | /) (_)\ Y '',,,(\|/ _(_)_ {_,_} |\ || |\\|// vVVVv`|/ _ \/{{}}}\| (_)@(_) | | | || | |;,,,(___) | @@()@@ _(_)_| ~Y~ wWWWw(_)\ (\| /) | | || / / {{}}} Y \| (_)#(_) \| (___) | \| // \ \||/ /\\|~Y~ \|/ | \ \/ /(_) |/ |/ Y / \|/ |// jgs `\\//`,.\|/|//.|/\\|/\\\|,\|/ //\|/\|.\\\| // \|\\ |/,// The above image is by the excellent ascii artist Joan Stark. wow, thanks Patrick, I'm touched! My London CD (or most of the tracks) are up on sonus.ca and/or last.fm I think - sonus.ca is a wonderful resource for exotic digital sound and music adventures. I'm not sure how I forgot my friend Hildi Westerkamp, and am glad to see Alex mentioned her. Just to say that Westerkamp is visiting London, UK, soon - for anyone in the area - info below. Not so much netart but a real pioneer of computer-mediated sound and listening work. Katharine Hildegard Westerkamp visit: 19th April *World Soundscape Project London Soundwalk Revisit 19 April. 10.30am - mid-afternoon. Meeting point outside Friends House on Euston Road at 10.30am. Soundwalk of Kings Cross and Regent's Park, led by members of the UK and Ireland Soundscape Community and Hildegard Westerkamp. This is a revisit of a soundwalk carried out during Easter of 1975 by the World Soundscape Project, as documented in the European Sound Diary 1977. You MUST register for this event by the 3rd April. To register please email j.dre...@gold.ac.uk (John Drever) This event is co-sponsored by the Noise Futures Network and Sound Practice Research. *Art and Soundscapes: Hildegard Westerkamp 20 April 2009, 14:00 - 17:00 Small Hall, Richard Hoggart Building , Goldsmiths College, London Composer and acoustic ecologist Hildegard Westerkamp will present and discuss her compositional work related to soundscape studies. Re: [NetBehaviour] Ada Lovelace
Has anyone mentioned Katherine Hayles or Wendy Chun? Katherine Hayles has written on digital writing and literature - more importantly, I think, she's written absollutely brilliantly on the philosophy of first and second-order cybernetics. Wendy Chun has written on protocols, issues of control, and co-edited a brilliant new media reader. There are also - Margaret Boden and Sherry Turkle - both made, I think, the most critical contributions understanding of online psychology and phenomenology. Everyone should read their work Brenda Laurel - a brilliant writer whose work on theater and interface is really critical to understanding online interaction. Julia Kristeva - her theories of the chora and abjection resonate in cyberspace - I'm thinking of Powers of Horror for example Luce Irigaray's notion of fluid mechanics and its relation to the feminine is more than descriptive of online phenomenology - see Speculum of the Other Woman Anna Munster - her book Materializing New Media: Embodiment in Information Aesthetics, has been a touchstone for me Ann Weinstone - check out Avatar Bodies, A Tantra for Posthumanism - one of the very few sources really connecting Buddhist thought with cyber- space Mez - I know other people have mentioned her - but she has brought code and body together in cyberspace in a totally new way Sugar Seville - she ran the Odyssey Artspace sim in Second Life for years and created one of the most dynamic online cultural experiments and experiences I've seen Stacy Horn and Theresa Senft - check out http://www.terrisenft.net/writing/grandinterview.html Stacy Horn - http://www.echonyc.com/~horn/bio.html - is a pioneer in social networking - check her out! Hello Karen, I may of missed some bits of info about the support of Ada Lovelace Day project. So if it is not too painful for you to repeat what might have already been discussed, could I bother you with a couple of questions? No problem at all :-) One thing I need to know from you is that, when the furtherfield crew compile all of the proposals sent in by everyone tomorrow, is whether after this happens, can subscribers still mail their proposals? Yes - we are collecting everything that has been posted so, tomorrow; and will repost it as a whole/digest to the list. This is so that we can get some idea how many contributions have been made all in one place. Also, we may ask some to add links or extra information to their own suggestions if needed. Anyone can still send in their Ada Lovelace Day contributions after Friday 27th, the last day is Monday 30th. The day after that we will put the document on the front of furtherfield for all the world to view... The other thing is - I mailed something to the list yesteday (unrelated to Ada Lovelace) and for some reason it did not appear. I remember that someone else had this problem also a couple of days ago. Is there something wrong with the server at all? We have had issues on the whole server lately - this is to do with us changing various domain nameservers. There has been a few glitches along the way, so we have reverted everything back to how it was before for now, and will attempt to change things again in the future, sometime. This means that all posts will be able to access the list again, and as normal... I wanted to say how much I have been enjoying seeing all of the contributions to Netbehaviour, and I want to thank you and everyone else who has taken part in doing something as special and important as this.
