[No Thirst Software] Request for Spending vs. Budget (Spending Plan) Amount Output Report
Hello Kevin, I've recently purchased MoneyWell, set up various accounts (checking, savings, credit cards, cash, etc...), and uploaded/coded transactions from the beginning of 2009. I've developed my spending plan and, with the help of other folks in this forum (thanks Druzyne and Kevin!) figured out the nuances about allocating income, timing, and priority. I really like what I see so far. I need to be able to output a report that I can share (email or paper copy) with my wife so that we can review our spending (for the month) versus our budgeted spending plan (by bucket) for each month. The report could be similar to the Bucket Summary Report in format, but it would be helpful to have a reference for the budgeted/monthly spending plan values for the buckets that we've spent from. I know that there are different ways to see/review this information in the MoneyWell viewing panes and I find that very helpful to me, as I log or manage our family's transactions in MoneyWell. Reviewing the software with my wife isn't always the best or most practical approach, so having an output report that can convey the same spending to spending plan information would be quite helpful to let her know where things stand. The availability of both summary and detail transaction reports would be even better. It would be quite helpful to have an option to include spending plan amount references in both the Bucket Summary Report as well as the Transaction Listing Report. The option of a check box to Include Planned Amount from Spending Plan (by bucket) in these (or other) reports would be fantastic! That way, I could output a .pdf document with either a summary or detail spent by bucket and include the spending plan amount for each bucket. I know that you're planning new views for graphs and I hope that some new reports also come along with the next version. I hope this is helpful to explain my need and the reason for the request. I'm also curious to hear if anybody has a similar need and if others have work-arounds to address this reporting / process for sharing spent to date vs. budget with a spouse or significant other. If anybody has any good ideas or techniques, please share. Thanks in advance Kevin for your support and I really like using MoneyWell so far. [No Thirst Software] Re: Allocating Income, I had to do 12 times
Thanks everybody for the helpful responses! On Jun 8, 6:09 am, bazcurtis bazm...@bazmac.co.uk wrote: Hi all, This is what I was trying to achieve, just for clarity. All my direct debits come out of Moneywell on the 1st of the month. I am paid on the first on the month. I want to fill my buckets in one go at that time. From what I am reading I need to set the allocate income to the 2nd half of the month and all will be well. Looking forward to next month :-) Best wishes Michael On Jun 8, 3:13 am, Druzyne drew.k...@gmail.com wrote: Jason, I just wanted to make sure you understand that the Timing of an allocation is specified in two places: once on your Spending Plan, where you specify First Half/Second Half/All Month for each bucket; and second on the Allocate Income panel (after you click the Allocate Income icon) where you specify that the allocation is for the First Half or Second Half of the month. The setting on the Allocate Income panel seems to adjust automatically based on the current date, but it can be changed. So, for those like myself who are paid once a month, and want to allocate once a month, we must specifically choose a Second Half allocation on the first of a month for all of our income to be allocated (since it's already there). I believe this was what Michael was trying to achieve. You really should try to see a difference between the timing of a bucket, and the priority of a bucket. Priority means deciding that if there are limited funds, the electric bill should always win out against a vacation fund. This setting is best for those that have variable or unpredictable income. Timing means that if you're paid bi- weekly or semi-monthly, you can hold off on allocating to your electricity bucket until the second paycheck, because the bill is due at the end of the month. These settings have different purposes for different situations. I'm glad, however, that Kevin shared how priority figures into timing and allocation. For those that allocate twice a month, it shows how beneficial it would be to always set the timing of low-priority buckets to Second Half (in the Spending Plan). It's not a big deal, though, since you can always flow money out of low-priority buckets. //Drew --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups No Thirst Software User Forum group. [No Thirst Software] Re: Allocating Income, I had to do 12 times
Drew and Kevin, If I'm reading Drew's comments correctly, it seems to conflict with the logic outlined in the FAQ and link that he provides. The FAQ states: When set to the first half, MoneyWell will fill all the buckets set to First Half fully and the buckets set to All Month partially. Those buckets set to Second Half are ignored. The way I interpret this, if you set the allocation timing of a bucket to the first half of the month, that bucket is given priority and the fill to amount is filled completely. The FAQ seems to stated that you prioritize the timing of expense buckets based on when in the month (first half/second half) you pay the bill. It seems logical that you can then allocate income to those buckets in the first half of the month for expenses that are incurred in the first half of the month. Lastly, is timing for when you allocate income a variable in this process? For example, I'm paid on the 15th and the 30th of the month and had planned on allocating income after I log income for each date. I'm assuming that I will log the income on the 15th, use the allocate income process, and my buckets that are set as first half will be prioritized. Then on the 30th, I'll do the same process and my buckets set for the second half will be prioritized. Am I understanding correctly and is this the best process to follow? Thanks, Jason On Jun 6, 1:35 pm, Druzyne drew.k...@gmail.com wrote: I just checked and all buckets are set to All Month. Does that give any clues? Michael, To get the buckets to fill all the way up at once, you need to adjust the timing of the allocation to second half of the month. When you click the Allocate Income icon, and the roll-out window comes out, there's a drop-down list in the upper right that says Monthly Timing. You'll want to set this to the second half of the month. This FAQ does a good job explaining how Timing affects allocation: http://nothirst.com/support/faq_bucketTiming.html //Drew --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups No Thirst Software User Forum group. Please read What criteria does MoneyWell use to match duplicate transactions? for the details. As a result, I had all three match in the import screen, but they were partnered with the wrong transactions. I can't seem to reorder them, though, so I hit cancel and them manually merge them on the main screen. Is there a better way? For example, if I have two transactions for $50, both on the same date. The import brings in both transactions, but there's nothing to really distinguish one from the other. If it helps, I *think* this is only happening on transactions where I made significant changes to the scheduled transaction. It's almost as if when I changed it, it duplicated it in the scheduled transaction database rather than changing it. Another one was one that I changed the date on. [No Thirst Software] Re: Splitting ATM Withdrawal or Income Allocation?
Kevin, Thanks for the advice! I showed my wife the program last night and I think she is adjusting to it, rather than our previous method of using a Numbers spreadsheet. ;-) One more question. Right now our budgeting for the next month is based primarily on my wife's income, who gets paid on the 25th of every month (23 or 24 if it falls on the weekend). Everything that hits from the 25th to the end of the month we consider next months expenses. Anyways, I want to make sure I understand the Next Month Starts functionality when allocating available income. It we select 5 days, does this mean her income will be allocated for the next month? Also, if charges come in after the 25th but before the end of the current month, will they be considered part of next month's expenses? Thanks in advance, Jason On Jan 12, 4:02 pm, Kevin Hoctor ke...@nothirst.com wrote: On Jan 12, 2009, at 3:07 PM, Jason wrote: I searched the archives for a clear answer to this, and couldn't find one. But how do we track what money we put in what envelopes? Is it better to split the ATM transaction that appears in the Cash Account into individual buckets? Or go up and allocate money flows to these buckets? Hi Jason, Don't split the ATM transaction, use the Cash Only feature. This puts your cash into a Cash Account. When you spend your cash, enter all these transactions in the Cash Account and assign them to the bucket assigned to that expense. So if I go out to eat and pay cash, I create a new transaction while the Cash Account is selected and then I assign that transaction to my Dining bucket. Your planned amounts for your buckets apply to all your spending across all accounts so if you pay for dining with your Visa debit card, you would just assign that transaction from you checking account to that Dining bucket too. Make sure you set up your Spending Plan so you have limits on your buckets and Allocate Income to those buckets as well. [No Thirst Software] Reconciling Transfer from Direct Download
Hi Kevin, I was curious if when directly downloading from a financial institution, if MoneyWell considers account transfers and creates a link automatically for those? For instance, when I download from my bank it shows a transaction in my Checking register called Online Transfer to SAV X. Obviously, that same transaction is labeled Online Transfer from CHK X in my Savings register. However, if I change the From: or To: drop-down box in the Transaction Detail box, a duplicate entry is created. I set up Memorized Transactions for these to rename them to Transfer to Emergency Savings and Transfer from Budget Checking, but wasn't sure if it would know to create a link automatically across the two registers when these type transactions are downloaded from the bank. Does this make sense? Thanks, Jason Smith --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups No Thirst Software User Forum group.
