[NSP] missing C# key
OK folks, have a good laugh. I`ve fettled a 17 key F chanter from David = Burleigh for Helene Moelo. Unfortunately we can=E2=80=99t play any duets in= D because the wee C# key is missing. Has anybody got a spare Burleigh type= C# out there that they could lend, hire out, or even sell ? Helene`s new p= ipes are going to take a while yet. P.S. in case any of you guys think it is down the back of the sofa= , lying around at Hartburn, or in an old pipe case, it is not. I got = the chanter a few years ago in a sorry 16 key state from the South of Germa= ny a few years ago. [NSP] nsp
More years ago than I care to remember, there was an excellent TV documentary in which the classical violinist Yehudi Menuhin met with an old Shetland fiddler (can't remember his name, sorry - big tall chap with receding hair and a winning smile and twinkle in his eyes - I think he was in his 80s then) and they discussed the instrument and played each others favourite tunes etc. Hi folks, it was the great Dr. Tom ANderson of Eshaness. Sir Yehudi once visited us unexpectedly when I was an undergraduate at Queens College, Dundee. He gave a brilliant afternoon concert at the Student`s Union. We asked him to play some Scots music, when he smiled wryly and said, I am useless at Scots music. I cannot play the snap, you see ! It would appear that afte r struggling with the finer points of Shetland music, he had gone on to meet my second cousin, Kenny Wilson - also a brilliant Hardanger player - in the Borders just before playing at the Usher Hall. As my cousin told me many years later:- He cudna get the snap ava Unfortunately in those days, I was not musically active, although I organised the student`s concerts from my wee room up in The Halls of Residence in Airlie Place. [NSP] The Morpeth Floods
Hi Julia and all caught up in the floods, I can certainly speak on behalf of the German Expats and all NSP people here by saying that we are mighty relieved that all are well and that the damage has been so well contained. Effie and I will be centered around Whitley Bay for Susan`s piping do (via Liverpool and the Lake District) and very much look forward to seeing you all again in a couple of weeks. And of course, I want to sit in the front row at the competitions with my noisy bag of crisps !!. We shall, at least have to play The Parting of the Waters, if things have not abated by then. [NSP] NSP Loud drones
Hi all,=3Fxml:namespace prefix = o ns = urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office /o:p/o:p assuming your drone reeds are set and balanced properly, I suggest the following.o:p/o:p The next time you have a big mac, get some drinking straws, slit one lengthwise and fit a section down into the standing part of the drone. I would not use wool, the fibres cause turbulence in the air passing through. The drinking straw trick cleanly reduces the dimension of the bore after the drone. This means that the acoustic energy propagates symmetrically down through a smaller volume of air. Any spiral turbulence in the air (depending on the maker !) will be moving more quickly and will therefore be more stable. My experience is that this seems to quieten down the drone without changing the acoustic behaviour characteristics of the drone reed itself. There are of course, many other problems why drones are loud, which can be fettled in different ways according to your playing experience. To be continued o:p/o:p o:p /o:p Yours ayeo:p/o:p Ina o:p/o:p -- To get on or off this list see list information at http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html
[NSP] A chiel amang ye takin notes
Hi all, This thread reminds me of the criticism which arose after Robert Sherlaw Johnson`s compositions, based on the Nelson theme, for Pauline Cato a couple of years back !! I also distinctly remember that Richard Butler was working with an avant garde composer approximately 20 years ago, the results of which were broadcast on German television. If any of you want to take a closer look at good, functional composition and arranging, take a look at Dick Hensold`s more recent material which he wrote on commission for Lance Robson, however--I couldn`t agree more with Matt. I stayed out of this latest flurry of activity, just to see how it would develop. Each musical composition stands on its own as a creative effort and is therefore fully and completely justifiable in its own right. Whether you like it or not, or whether it fits into a genre, is always a matter of personal, intellectual and emotional taste. Some people like J.K. Rowling, others prefer J Joyce. Some people like Cage and! Scriabin, others prefer to slide into Mozart and Bach, because they are more accessible. However to compare two writers or composers directly from different genres (classical/traditional, for example), in an off-hand, unqualified manner, with the pernicious virus of pan-celticism lurking in the musical background is a fundamental error of cognitive methodology in the area of modern esthetics and only echos what Matt has said in his most recent post. =3Fxml:namespace prefix = o ns = urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office /o:p /o:p Max is an eminently qualified composer and I will support to my last day of piping his continuing compositional career. o:p /o:p Cheers now o:p /o:p Ina -- To get on or off this list see list information at http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html
