[NTG-context] Recommendations for Speed?
Hello, I've been perusing the list archives for a couple of days now, and reading up on articles (such as Hans' regarding optimizing in TeX and eTeX) to find guidance on a handful of decisions. Our company makes a web-based publishing solution called MemoryPress.com that uses conTeXt for on-demand creation of PDFs which are then converted to jpeg format for display in a web browser. We are currently looking into ways to speed things up and since many of you are far more qualified than I am in this area, I wondered if you might advise me on the following: 1. Is there a way to keep TeX in-memory (i.e. as a server or daemon process) so that it doesn't have to load and reload fonts and the environment? Our system makes repeated requests for typeset documents and we are wondering if there's a way to remove the overhead of re-running pdftex. 2. Among the many different command-line TeX options, what might optimize for speed? I've done some rudimentary benchmarking and found that executing etex (without conTeXt) is much faster than texexec, and wondered if there is any advice in this area. Is there any way to shave off some of the overhead of using conTeXt? 3. I've noticed that there is some kind of caching going on (tui/tuo files?) that helps speed things up after the first run. How can I best take advantage of this facility? What kinds of things will require TeX to start from scratch, vs. use some or all of this cached information? 4. Are there any other areas I should consider when looking for ways to use TeX as an on-demand typesetting engine? The specification says that lookups should be applied in LookupList order. Featurefiles don't have an explicit ordering command, but that does not mean that ordering should be irrelevant. In LuaTeX and XeTeX utf-8 already is the default regime. Only for pdfTeX you still need \enableregime[utf-8] (but it doesn't hurt if you leave it in XeTeX and LuaTeX) b) Yes, it should be so in theory. But to be honest, it doesn't work, although it's probably a rather trivial patch. ConTeX+XeTeX currently simply ignores the \enableregime command. (Most people, esp. the ones aware about XeTeX, write in utf-8 anyway, so nobody has complained enough about the lack of that functionality.) You can still use the low-level command \XeTeXinputencoding ... (I don't know which name exactly you need for mac roman, but that should work.) But then again: - I've been just playing a little bit with it again and figured out that things have changed during the MKIV transition a bit. XeTeX doesn't ignore \enableregime any more (as it was the case some time ago), and that functionality should be adapted (\enableregime should not be ignore, but should resolve to the correct behaviour properly). - In addition to that, the default fonts loaded are now OpenType LM instead of the old ones, which is much better, but during loading, [encoding=uc] has been omitted (and that should be fixed as well), which means that \`e or \egrave won't work as they used to. So my answer would be: don't use \enableregime in XeTeX at the moment and use UTF-8. But the other problem with math fonts is much more critical and needs to be fixed as soon as possible. That one can wait a bit. You can also download any ConTeXt version from here: http://foundry.supelec.fr/frs/?group_id=14 and then unzip it into texmf-local (or wherever the ConTeXt files currently are) and remake formats. But there is still one thing I fear: font handling in XeTeX has been broken since TeX Live came out, so I don't know if there is any stable XeTeX font support in any of the versions between the one from TeX Live 2007 and the latest one. There are some late versions and fixes, but I really don't know which one to suggest. Perhaps Taco knows better. Or simply take the one from TeX Live again. Another possibility would be to use LuaTeX. It should work OK, but again, there is no 100% guarantee (I created some newspaper with it back in June and besides all the problems I had every now and then, it was pre-alpha after all, our color laser at university still objects to print it out. I shouldn't have mentioned that, but only to warn you that any last-minute fixes in ConTeXt can be problematic, if you don't have at least two days inbetween, so that all the little bugs biting you in that release can be fixed.) I hope that the problem with non-working PDFs will be resolved really soon, so if you have a few days more to wait ... in the meantime you can try LuaTeX. wget http://www.pragma-ade.com/context/install/macosxtex.zip wget http://www.pragma-ade.com/context/install/justtex.zip unzip macosxtex.zip unzip justtex.zip cd tex . setuptex luatools --generate texexec --make --all texexec --make --xtx --all texexec --make --lua --all Don't worry, that won't break your distribution. Hi Arthur, Taco, you're my heroes! Changing the order of the lookup tables in the .fea file actually took care of the problem. Thanks for looking into this, now I get the results I was expecting; every substitution is applied to the font! Once the initial lookup has been done, this is reasonably fast, too, so I like it. I'm eagerly waiting for teh new release next week to see if this works with copy-and-past from pdfs. So this appears to be one way to deal with ASCII input a la babel. Easy to implement, but fails on fonts that don't have the glyphs for the Latin characters. One trivial question: when I want to experiment with feature files, the cached instance of the font seems to be in the way. Only after deleting the current luatex-cache, regenerating it and recompiling the format do I get proper results. Is there an easier/faster way to do this? Will now go on and experiment some more, especially with type1/afm- based fonts. Thanks a lot, best wishes Thomas On Sep 16, 2007, at 10:22 AM, Taco Hoekwater wrote: Hi guys, Try this ordering: lookup GreekBabelLookupMultiple { ... } GreekBabelLookupMultiple ; lookup GreekBabelLookupSimple { ... } GreekBabelLookupSimple ; ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://tex.aanhet.net archive : https://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___

[NTG-context] Windows Installer for MsWinContext
Hello, I'm back with my idea of installer for mswincontext distribution. I successfully use my local (post-install) version , which simply sets env. vars, but I feel there is need for more. Anticipating new mswincontext build, I can implement the installer for it using free Inno Setup software. The controversy is about setup file content. I see it as whole mswincontext, because it is declared as minimal distribution (so, nothing can be thrown away). However, I was suggested on this list to make some parts downloadable on demand, so I need to ask: what parts to make? In general, I believe that if classical Windows installer for ConTeXt were available, it would gain more popularity and appreciation. Of course, I'd like to hear from Hans and Taco what they think about it, and whether they dare to facilitate this. My only real question is how to also support a minimal LaTeX distribution side-by-side. I hardly use it, but many of us still have legacy documents we need to process now and then. Maybe we can take the LaTeX portion of XemTeX and make it an install option as well. A couple years back I actually dumped the XemTeX LaTeX files into my C:\ConTeXt\tex\texmf tree and it worked (and mswincontext is closer to fpTeX/Fabrice's way than to the MiKTeX way AKAIK). Since ConTeXt always uses \texmf-local there was no conflict. OTOH there may be other issues... maybe a dedicated \texmf-latex tree branch is called for...
