This is indeed possible with LuaTeX because you could create a virtual font

Please, don't take me dumber than I am. There's a smiley after my naive remark.

It's great if luaTeX can access all available glyphs of a font (and
that's really another reason to switch), and I guess it will also
continue to combine accents and base characters for undefined glyphs,
but of course it can't invent new glyphs.

Most good Type1 fonts contain the range of Latin-1 and Mac-Roman, and
if I'll be able to access that, it's great.

I already started to combine several freeware fonts into OpenType
(i.e. if there are e.g. Western, CE and alternate/expert fonts). But I
guess that's only one of my few projects that stall until they're
needed...

Regarding luaTeX: Even if I can just include rsync into my daily
update script to stay up-to-date on binaries (thanks for pointing that
out!), I get a bad feeling if I see lots of threads on this list that
show that luaTeX seems to have still some basic problems... On the
other hand when I started using ConTeXt I did it for some features
(grid setting!) even though it was a very much moving target.

I never meant this :-(

but of course it can't invent new glyphs.

But you could use them from another font as fallback, not the best
idea but possible. And no, you can't access all glyphs from a font,
it is easy to to print the vertical forms from CJK punctuation with XeTeX
but the LuaTeX output is nonsense.

It could be a simple matter of a missing file that somehow
luatex fails to check for during opening so it is not discovered

I have no idea how to debug anything on windows.

It could also be a (more complicated) problem triggered by

In either case, someone else has to come up with tests and/or
fix attempts. The only advice I can give is to reinstall

actually, if you load a type one font (assuming that the afm is
present), you can use features like compose=yes which will try to create
missing characters using virtual font technology

(mkiv tries to avoid using tfm files, although for math we still need them)

To Hraban: encoding=uc has *zero* effect. To be honest - I doubt that
you will be able to extract any more than (theoretical limit of) 256
glyphs from the Type1 font with XeTeX - character slots and font
glyphs are in one-to-one correlation, so I doubt that you can access
the glyphs outside of those 256 slots (unless you make tfm map
files, but that's probably the reason why one wants to use XeTeX - to
get rid of that encoding mess). So: I guess that Latin-1 works, but
 encoding=uc is ignored anyway.

in mkiv no encodings are used, although when an encoding is specicified,
some trickery takes place, for instance: texnansi-whatever becomes
whatever and so, i.e. the encoding is removed and internally fonts are
remapped onto unicode.

type-xtx contains quite some uc leftovers, but I'm not sure if
fixing them is a wise idea or not (backward compatibility).

i dunno either ... this may date from the time that not that many open
type fonts were around, so we may consider dropping it (i.e. we kind of
assume that xetex users use open type)

It is in supp-box.tex, around line 1600. You only have to alter (
add the \language=-1 command) the line I marked with needed for mkiv,
everything else can stay as it is.

Don't forget to remake the format(s)!

i dunno either ... this may date from the time that not that many open
type fonts were around, so we may consider dropping it (i.e. we kind of
assume that xetex users use open type)

There are definitions like this one:

\starttypescript[sans][arial][uc]
\definefontsynonym[Arial] [name:Arial][features=default]
\definefontsynonym[ArialItalic][name:Arial Italic] [features=default]
\definefontsynonym[ArialBold] [name:Arial Bold] [features=default]
\definefontsynonym[ArialBoldItalic][name:Arial Bold Italic][features=default]
\stoptypescript

It just predefines some (mostly Mac) typescripts. Some of those
typescripts might be usable in luaTeX as well. I have no idea how many
people have ever used
 \usetypescript[arial][uc]
[uc] could be removed, but if these lines are deleted, the documents
will be broken (which is probably true for quite some XeTeX documents
from past which used the old notation). And on the other hand, the
definitions could be made more generic (to be usable in LuaTeX as
well).

Mojca

To Hraban: oh, I did not understand you joke at first :-) Now I see
what you were trying to say with extending the font to the full
unicode range :-) And sure enough - LuaTeX doesn't do that either.

What I meant was - in afm files you have:

C 235 ; WX 355 ; N ordmasculine ; B 38 369 317 710 ;
C 241 ; WX 791 ; N ae ; B 45 -10 741 460 ;

C -1 ; WX 626 ; N afii10052 ; B 100 0 576 880 ;

And there is probably no way for XeTeX to access afiiX, whatever
that is, while LuaTeX tries to guess the unicode point from the glyph
name and uses that one when available.
But - I will stop talking about LuaTeX, as I have promised you already
in the last email.

I have tried to set TEXMFHOME but got the same result. Please can anybody

[NTG-context] Scite startup script error

2008-04-08 Thread Abhishek Seth
Hi,
It seems I have missing scite-ctx.lua. It is not present in the
cont-tmf.zip which I had downloaded. I created an empty scite-ctx.lua to
suppress the error message. Is this file meant to be created manually or
a part of distribution (cont-tmf.zip)?

Thanks

probably related to scite using lua 5 now; did you update to the

Hello Jean,

You need to add that variable to the list of TEXMF trees as well:
   export TEXMF='{$TEXMFPROJECT,$TEXMFFONTS,...,!!$TEXMFMAIN}'
just put it somewhere inbetween, possibly near beginning. (Maybe we
need to add it there by default.)

[NTG-context] ConTEXt - produced book

2008-04-08 Thread Jörg Hagmann
Dear list members,

My biochemistry textbook has been published by orell füssli as an UTB
book. I would like to thank all the members of this list, and Hans in
particular, for their help (acknowledgements in the Thank you section
of the book as well).

You'll find a few sample pages under:
www.ogbasel.ch/context.html (2.5MB)

Page and margin sizes prescribed by the publisher. The pages illustrate:

p. 7: The use of inmargin text.
p. 79: a vignette, in the margin and partially in the text area.
p. 110: The height of some margin figures was large, necessitating
manual adjustments.
p. 145: A framed box and a wide table. The large number of enumerations,
figures, frames etc. made some typographical sins inevitable (e.g. last
line on this page).
p. 155: textbody and margin completely filled
p. 190: I include this page for Willi and Thomas
p. 235: Some chapters end with what students really need to know (red
background). This is the end of the chapter on nutrition
p. 239: The Toolbox contains framed figures without a legend.

[NTG-context] problem using protrusion and hz

2008-04-08 Thread David C. Walden
Hi,

Adytia pointed me to some examples at
   http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Protrusion
I tried the following code with a couple of page test page,

-

\definepapersize[specialbook][width=5.5in,height=8.5in]
\setuppapersize[specialbook][specialbook]
\setuplayout[height=7.5in,width=4.5in,backspace=40pt,location=middle]
%\usetypescript[serif][hz][quality] %line 1
%\setupalign[hanging,hz] %line 2
\usetypescript[serif,sans,mono][hanging][pure] %line 3
\setupalign[hanging] %line 4
\usetypescript[modern-base][texnansi] %line 5
\setupbodyfont[reset] %line 6
\setupbodyfont[modern]%line 7

%\setupbodyfont[serif,11pt]
\setupwhitespace[4.5pt]
\setupcolors[state=start]
\setupexternalfigures[directory={../marsh-slideshow}]
\setupindenting[none]
\setuphead[chapter][number=no]

\setupheader[state=none]

% Enable colors and activate hyperlinks
\setupcolors [state=start] \setupinteraction [state=start, color=blue]
\definecolor [darkRed][r=.5,g=.0,b=.0]
\useURL[TPJ][{http://www.tug.org/pracjourn}][][{\it Prac\TeX{} Journal}]
\useURL[mywebsite][{http://www.walden-family.com/dave}][][www.walden-family.com]

\starttext

...

\stoptext

and I get slightly different results if lines 1 and 2 versus 3 and 4
are in or out, or if both pairs of lines are commented out. If, however,
I try this with the real 215 page book I am compiling rather than
a smaller example, pdfTeX halts 200 or so pages in with a fatal
error saying it has run out of space and saying something more about
a hash table. If I comment out lines 5-7, I don't get the fatal
error but also I don't think I see protrusion and font expansion
happening. The real book doesn't have very much body text but
is does have 215 images with code like
\placefigure{none}{\externalfigure[#1.jpg][width=\textwidth]}
where #1 comes from a macro call.

Any thoughts? (I suppose I can split my source file in half
and find a ConTeXt command to start the page numbering for
the second half a 107 or so and then combine the two PDFs
with Acrobat.)

Best regards, Dave

[NTG-context] perl/Ruby dependency -- how deep?

2008-04-08 Thread Joel C. Salomon
Two questions came up when I was looking into putting ConTeXt on a USB
stick (i.e., as a portable app):

1. Is perl still required for a ConTeXt installation (say, under
Windows)? I know texexec is now written in Ruby, but are there other
programs in Stand-alone or the Minimals that require perl?

2. I vaguely recall some mention of eventually replacing texexec with
a Lua version. Is this actually being planned, and would that
eliminate the external language dependencies of ConTeXt?

mptopdf at least ... But it might be possible to do without (I'm not
sure - you need to try). If you put things on usb, it should be enough
to set PATH properly, that's all. Neither perl nor ruby need a proper
installation.

Yes. You can already use context (see mtx-context.lua), though there
is no stub yet (you can easily make one), and it's not so well tested
yet.

perl is not needed, unless you want to run mptopdf, and even that is not
needed because texexec can do the same

luatex + context mkiv is indeed independent

- index sorting takes place in mkiv
- job control is done with mtxrun/mtx-context

Would be cool!

I'm working occasionally on a songbook that contains a Russian song,

hardly read it).
I've everything in UTF-8, so it would be great if ConTeXt could
change the font automatically or language-dependent.

I still didn't try anything with that, though, maybe it's easy - the
base font is Century Schoolbook (because that's LilyPond's default
font and it works well for a songbook), and if I use XeTeX/luaTeX
with TeXGyre Schola, it should just work. (Or don't you think?)

Ok, maybe I don't even need virtual font collections...

You'll find a few sample pages under:
www.ogbasel.ch/context.html (2.5MB)

Page and margin sizes prescribed by the publisher. The pages
illustrate:

p. 7: The use of inmargin text.
p. 79: a vignette, in the margin and partially in the text area.
p. 110: The height of some margin figures was large, necessitating
manual adjustments.
p. 145: A framed box and a wide table. The large number of
enumerations,
figures, frames etc. made some typographical sins inevitable (e.g.
last

line on this page).
p. 155: textbody and margin completely filled
p. 190: I include this page for Willi and Thomas
p. 235: Some chapters end with what students really need to know (red
background). This is the end of the chapter on nutrition
p. 239: The Toolbox contains framed figures without a legend.

I really like your work. It would be interesting to see the sources and to
learn the tricks (your used).
The look is great.

Thanks to Hans for the beautiful gift to the World.

One final comment. I think the typesetting is fine, technically speaking,
but, overall, the spacing is too tight. It is not relaxing.
Readers should be more confortable. WHAT IS THE THINKING OF THIS COMMUNITY.

I am not a typesetter, but setting type, good typesetting is difficult to
express. It transcends words. It's about feelings and type.

Personally, I think that Prof.Dr.med. should be typeset differently. How can
we accept Prof, Dr. Med, with not spaces in between, perhaps thin spaces.

Congratulations, however.

I did this interview where I just mentioned that I read Foucault. Who

In either case, someone else has to come up with tests and/or

Can this be a hint?
