[NTG-context] [NTG-Context] How to compute correct page number for handout

2010-09-30 Thread Pierre-François Bonnefoi
Hello,

I'use extensively context to write my lecture notes and for all of my printing
needs.

For my students, I've made some lecture presentations in color, and I print
them in blackwhite, with four pages on one page for the handout.

I would like to compute a correct Table of contents according to the handout :
so to divide the current page number by four to get a correct page number for
the handout.

\def\ChapterPrefix#1{\the\numexpr#1/4 \relax}
\setupcombinedlist[content][level=1]
\setuplist[chapter][after=,before=,numbercolor=yellow,numbercommand=\underbar,pagecommand=\ChapterPrefix]

That doesn't work, and I've some difficulties to figure how computation is
performed in e-TeX...

Could you help me to resolve this issue ?

Kind regards,
Pierre-François Bonnefoi.

[NTG-context] Lua MP

2010-09-30 Thread Procházka Lukáš Ing . - Pontex s . r . o .

Hello,

is it possible that Lua gets value of a MetaPost variable?

Let's have MetaPost code:

z11=(0,0)
z12=(1,1)
z21=(0,1)
z22=(1,0)

aa[z11,z12]=bb[21,z22]

So now aa = bb = 0.5.

And I'd need to access MetaPost values 'aa' and 'bb' from Lua (e.g. in Lua: local a
= mpost.aa, b = mpost.bb).

Is it possible somehow?

Regards,

Lukas

This is probably due to the fact that Context MKIV uses a database for its info
on fonts. I would suggest, that you copy the font from TeXlive directly into
the tree where the minimals reside an run context --generate to update the
database.

2010-09-30 Thread Pierre-François Bonnefoi
Dear Hans,

Thank you to answer my question.

I've tried it and I'm sorry to report that this only works in MK IV, that I
don't use (I've tried but some of my documents don't translate correctly).

From my point of view, I don't know if it is the correct answer because I want
to get some altered page number, and I think that I have to alter them
artificially, only for display purpose.

best regards,
Pierre-François Bonnefoi.

you have to make typescript for them as they are not supported out of

LM have no Cyrillic, but CM-U have, and I think that is why he wants to

including the fonts in minimals too since there seem not to be any
Cyrillic CM fonts there.

Hello,

I'd say there is no universal naming convention.

For example I found local variables written with upper case
(http://lua-users.org/wiki/AsciiMenu) (local DASHES = string.rep('-', 80)) -
it is not very common in programming to name local variables with upper case.

But in this case -
- it was probably to mark the variable as CONSTANT (as Lua doesn't have const
keyword like C, where uppercase names are generally used for macros as constants or
enums).

So:

- namespaces (modules) are generally named with lowercase names
('mynamespace.') (like in C? 'std::', 'boost::'),

- variables are generally named with lowercase names ('_' may be used inside,
so we get 'myvar' or 'my_var')

- - constants with uppercase? (local PFX = '#'?) May be.

- - global variables? One may prefer prefixing such variables somehow, so we get
'_my_pfx' (or '_MyPfx' or '_myPfx')? (In C/Cpp, personally I use the 'g' prefix and camel
notation, so I get 'gMyVar', opposite to all other vars with lowercase names like
'my_inner_var'.) But if a variable is to be global, it's better to encapsulate it to a
namespace; thus mark of globality in the name gets unnecessary as we access
the variable like 'mynamespace.var' (it's obvious the variable is global for that
namespace).

- functions? Naming like 'thisIsMyFunction()' (camel convention) is quite often, but one
may prefer C-like naming ('this_is_my_function()' - so like internal variables?) or
TeX convention ('thisismyfunction()') (natural to standard function, so we
don't have 'string:g_sub()' or 'string:gSub()' but 'string:gsub()').

I'd say this to a wider discussion. You may get inspired from existing code as
Patrick wrote, or e.g. to have a look into .lua scripts in ctx minimals.

('mynamespace.') (like in C? 'std::', 'boost::'),

- variables are generally named with lowercase names ('_' may be used
inside, so we get 'myvar' or 'my_var')

- - constants with uppercase? (local PFX = '#'?) May be.

- - global variables? One may prefer prefixing such variables somehow,
so we get '_my_pfx' (or '_MyPfx' or '_myPfx')? (In C/Cpp, personally I
use the 'g' prefix and camel notation, so I get 'gMyVar', opposite to
all other vars with lowercase names like 'my_inner_var'.) But if a
variable is to be global, it's better to encapsulate it to a
namespace; thus mark of globality in the name gets unnecessary as we
access the variable like 'mynamespace.var' (it's obvious the variable
is global for that namespace).

- functions? Naming like 'thisIsMyFunction()' (camel convention) is
quite often, but one may prefer C-like naming ('this_is_my_function()'
- so like internal variables?) or TeX convention
('thisismyfunction()') (natural to standard function, so we don't have
'string:g_sub()' or 'string:gSub()' but 'string:gsub()').

I'd say this to a wider discussion. You may get inspired from existing
code as Patrick wrote, or e.g. to have a look into .lua scripts in ctx
minimals.

[NTG-context] columnset - float vertical spacing

2010-09-30 Thread Jan Pohanka

Hello,

I need to reduce vertical spacing around floats in columnset. I have tried

about columns balancing? I have read the columns.pdf manual, but I don't

[NTG-context] Problems with TABLE

Hi,

I still have some problems with TABLE:

\eTR
\bTR
  \bTD abc \eTD
  \bTD abc \eTD
  \bTD abc \eTD
  \bTD abc \eTD

\eTABLE

1) the cow sticks out of the cell. How can I pen the cow to the cell?
2) the third cell in the first row: when I turn on the right rule, the abc
goes down. How can I have the abc on the baseline with the other ones in the
first row _and_ have a right rule like that?

To place 2 figures I use \startcombination[1*2]

 {\switchtobodyfont[small] small}
 {\tfxx tfxx}
 {\tfx tfx}
 {\tfa tfa}
 {\tfb tfb}
 {\tfc tfc}
 {\tfd tfd}
 \stoptext

 Latin Modern Regular is available in different optical sizes -
 lmroman{5,6,7,8,9,10,12,17}-regular.otf - and as context is aware of these
 sizes (configured in typescripts) I wonder why they are not correctly
 assigned. This table indicates what happens instead:

 \tfxx 6pt    - lmroman6 (as expected)
 \tfx  8pt    - lmroman8 (as expected)
 \tftf 10pt   - lmroman10 (as expected)
 \tfa  12.0pt - lmroman10 (instead of lmroman12)
 \tfb  14.4pt - lmroman10 (instead of lmroman12)
 \tfc  17.3pt - lmroman10 (instead of lmroman17)
 \tfd  20.7pt - lmroman10 (instead of lmroman17)

 \switchtobodyfont[small]  8pt  - lmroman8 (as expected)
 \switchtobodyfont[big]    12pt - lmroman12 (as expected)

 \title   17.3pt - lmroman10 (instead of lmroman17)
 \section 12pt   - lmroman10 (instead of lmroman12)

 The commands \title and \section and the font size switches \tfa, b, c, and d
 scale the font to the correct size, however, the wrong optical size is
 assigned. Note, this is not the case for \tfx, xx and \switchtobodyfont.
 Tested in MKIV and MKII (current beta).

 Is this a bug or a feature?

Most likely the first, however I never really understood how this
magic is configured in ConTeXt.

The relevant files are
tex/context/base/type-siz.mkiv (as well as mkii)
I guess that the contents more or less agree with your observations
(there is no 17pt font defined for big, however there are small fonts
defined for x and xx), but I would have no idea how to fix anything.

2 options:

- The cow gets smaller: \externalfigure[cow][width=\localhsize]
  (does not work, I don't know why...)

- The table cells get bigger. You have to define the width. If you want to

  \setupTABLE[c][2,3][width=0.1\textwidth]

I wonder, why there is no such problem with the height... ?

Something like the posters (links to pdf files) on

I can send you the source code if that is what you want (but I do not

Re: [NTG-context] Problems with TABLE

2010-09-30 Thread Patrick Gundlach

  \bTD[nc=2,nr=2,background=color, backgroundcolor=yellow]
  \externalfigure[cow][width=.2\textwidth]  \eTD

 2 options:

 - The cow gets smaller: \externalfigure[cow][width=\localhsize]
  (does not work, I don't know why...)

 - The table cells get bigger. You have to define the width. If you want to
  span the cow 50%/50%, then
  \setupTABLE[c][2,3][width=0.1\textwidth]

I hope that this is a bug and not a feature

Thanks!

Use \hsize, \localhsize is the current width in a narrower environment or in a

[NTG-context] Problems with x-set-11.mkiv

2010-09-30 Thread Cedric Mauclair
Hi,

For some reason, line 248 of x-set-11.mkiv file (\blank[\v!line]) is
not taken into account. As a result, when typesetting the setup-??.pdf
files, the line of the first argument being described after a command
is be too high and the word optional is mixed with it.

When we change \blank[\v!line] with the low-level
\vskip\lineheight it works as expected (or it seems). I understand
this is not beautiful, but it is a workaround for now. I am sure a
fix will be available shortly.

I noticed this when generating the seup file with the command (MkIV):
mtxrun --script context --run --interface=en --global
--result=setup-en --purge x-set-12.

There is no problem with the MkII equivalent (as it uses x-set-11.mkii instead):
texexec --int=en --pdf --global --result=setup-en --purge x-set-12.

Regards.

Actually i think “\vskip.667\baselineskip” is a nicer value for the distance

[NTG-context] Still struggling with TABLE width

\bTR
\bTD[nc=2]
%\hbox{A very very long text in one line, perhaps more}
A very very long text in one line, perhaps more
\eTD

what I'd like to get is a table that is as wide as the text in the second row
(A very very long text in one line, perhaps more) or at most the line width and
the other two cells (the first line) stretched to mach that width (see image).
I am pretty sure that this is possible, but how?!?

It's the same issue as with the cow.
Perhaps a bug-report in the tracker would help...

A workaround could be, to measure first the width of the content (\setbox...

[NTG-context] composing characters in MKIV

2010-09-30 Thread Mojca Miklavec
Dear Hans (or anyone else),

There are some fonts (including Lucida) that don't have all the needed
character. A font feature compose=yes has been added to MKIV, but
that one doesn't work for Lucida or any other Type1 font.

My current fallback is to use:

% this doesn't help
% \definefontfeature
%   [compose]
%   [liga=yes,kern=yes,tlig=yes,compose=yes]
\beginNEWTEX
\catcode`č=\active
\catcode`Č=\active
\defč{\buildtextaccent\textcaron c}
\defČ{\buildtextaccent\textcaron C}
\endNEWTEX

But nevertheless a few questions:
- Is there some accessible method to compose a few characters in the
font (not too low-level) as opposed to using active characters? The
code must be there already since this is supposed to work for OpenType
fonts.
- Is there any way to fix horizontal and vertical position of accents
(on glyph-per-glyph basis; that one probably needs to be slightly more
low-level; maybe using lfg files)?
- Do lfg files work for non-opentype (Type1) fonts?

Thanks a lot,
   Mojca

[NTG-context] Modules, namespaces, Luacode etc..

2010-09-30 Thread Jaroslav Hajtmar

Hello my wise masters of the Force and teachers of Jedi...

It seems that my first module (SCANCSV of scancsv.lua library of CTM in
Brejlov) work without any visible errors (without

documentation and with a junkyard yet), but I'm not sure whether is there a
hidden problem or future collisions. Therefore I have a few of questions
for
modules namespaces, luacode namespaces etc. I want to ask how relates a
namespace ConTeXt module with
namespace of Lua code, which is listed within this module and others
questions.

1. Is the namespace of Lua code independent of the namespace module?
2. If are ConTeXt macros defined in the module, are automatically in its
namespace?

3. Can both namespaces (module and Luacode) somehow connected?
4. What happens when I have two macros with the same name in two
different modules?
5. Can I call the macros of the same names in different namespaces
(diferent modules)?

6. Can I read about somewhere more?
7. I enclose below a minimal example of the module (I do not know why
there are some things) to comment or write yours comments and
suggestions, etc.

I'd like to start with something simpler, but this is the reality of our
Empire

Thanks everyone for the advice or recommendations for the study.

 1. Is the namespace of Lua code independent of the namespace module?

Yes.

 2. If are ConTeXt macros defined in the module, are automatically in its
 namespace?

No, the namespace in a module is only for keys and key-value-lists. When you
write a command with the same name as a core command the core definition is
overwritten and lost.

 3. Can both namespaces (module and Luacode) somehow connected?

You can try to use the same namespace in TeX and Lua but thats up to you.

 4. What happens when I have two macros with the same name in two different
 modules?

The last definition is the current meaning of the command, e.g. in this example
the command \befehl has the content “Befehl” because it’s the last defintion.

\def\befehl{command} % \befehl has not the content “command”

\def\befehl{Befehl} % \befehl has now the content “Befehl” and the content of
the first definition is lost

 5. Can I call the macros of the same names in different namespaces (diferent
 modules)?

When you call them inside of a environment it’s possible.

\def\startenvone{\bgroup\def\befehl{command}}
\def\stopenvone {\egroup}

\def\startenvtwo{\bgroup\def\befehl{befehl}}
\def\stopenvtwo {\egroup}

\startenvtwo \befehl \stopenvtwo % \befehl == “befehl”

 6. Can I read about somewhere more?

- The programming pages on the wiki.
- A book about plain TeX {e.g. The TeXbook, TeX by Topic, TeX for the Impatient
etc.)

 7. I enclose below a minimal example of the module (I do not know why there

Give me some time to write a detailed description of the \definenamespace

+1

I assumed that \definestructurefoo is always related to structure, meaning
structure of document, sections ... not the formatting of footnotes.

Next time I know better: it's all about enumeration, it's all about structure
today.

[NTG-context] Consolas

2010-09-30 Thread Patrick Gundlach
Hi,

several days ago I asked about companions to Cambria, and Wolfgang kindly gave
me this:

\definetypeface [mainface] [rm] [serif] [cambria] [default]
\definetypeface [mainface] [ss] [sans] [corbel] [default] [rscale=auto]
\definetypeface [mainface] [tt] [mono] [consolas] [default] [rscale=auto]
\definetypeface [mainface] [mm] [math] [cambria] [default]

which works fine, except for consolas. Shouldn't consolas be defined like

 \starttypescript [mono] [consolas] [name]
   \setups[\s!font:\s!fallback:\s!sans]
\definefontsynonym [\s!Mono]   [\s!file:consola]
[\s!features=\s!default]
\definefontsynonym [\s!MonoBold]   [\s!file:consolab]
[\s!features=\s!default]
\definefontsynonym [\s!MonoItalic] [\s!file:consolai]
[\s!features=\s!default]
\definefontsynonym [\s!MonoBoldItalic] [\s!file:consolaz]
[\s!features=\s!default]
\stoptypescript

instead of

Sans ? It's much more a monospace font then a Sans.

Thanks

Patrick

[NTG-context] wrong sign or spacing in math/mkiv (at least in Lucida)

2010-09-30 Thread Mojca Miklavec
Dear Hans,

I'm not sure if the same problem would occur with other fonts as well
(it is probably worth trying), but at least it happens with Lucida.

Something is wrong with the spacing around the plus sign or maybe the
wrong plus sign is taken (I suspect that). In MKII the formula is
nicely aligned, while it looks ugly in MKIV.

Here's the source:

\beginOLDTEX
\usetypescript[lucida][ec]
\endOLDTEX
\setupbodyfont[lucida]

\starttext

\startformula\startalign[align={left,left}]
\NC m_{A_1'}  \NC = (3+0+3+3+0+3) = 1 \NR
\NC m_{A_2'}  \NC = (3+0-3+3+0-3) = 0 \NR
\NC m_{E'}\NC = (6+0+0+6+0+0) = 1 \NR
\NC m_{A_1''} \NC = (3+0+3-3+0-3) = 0 \NR
\NC m_{A_2''} \NC = (3+0-3-3+0+3) = 0 \NR
\NC m_{E''}   \NC = (6+0+0-6+0+0) = 0 \NR

in the second pass the localhsize can be different and as a result the
final result somewhat unexpected

- The table cells get bigger. You have to define the width. If you want to
  span the cow 50%/50%, then
  \setupTABLE[c][2,3][width=0.1\textwidth]

I hope that this is a bug and not a feature

some day soon I'll rewrite the code and add more configurability (i
think I started already but probably lost the code)

 Something is wrong with the spacing around the plus sign or maybe the

 indeed, in the lfg file, add:

 mathencodings[lbr-sy] = {

Thanks a lot, that helps.

I see an
mathencodings[large-to-small] = {
[0x00028] = 0x00, -- (
[0x00029] = 0x01, -- )

Oh, I have tried that; actually I did

as well as \addff{compose}, but it had zero effect since I used that
*after* \setupbodyfont instead of using it before. This was a bit
weird since features for OpenType fonts can be switched on and off at
any given time and I didn't realize that order was important.

 \startTEXpage

 \stopTEXpage

 \stoptext

 ok, positioning could be improved I guess but so far no one bothered about
 this feature

(I started fixing vf fonts of Lucida for pdfTeX, but I'm not sure how
to proceed; and now it may not be needed any more.)

There are two problems. Even \buildtextaccent creates an ugly č and
that dates back to Knuth's TeX (TeX assumes that every letter is
symetric which holds for just about any letter but c). But I agree
that this is highly esoteric request.

However compose=yes creates an unacceptable uppercase Č, at least in
Lucida, much worse than what TeX does (and already TeX does it badly).

I've sent you a test file. A problem is that the boundingbox of an
accent is rather unpredictable and I might need to write a more clever
function for it. So we need more tests with different fonts ... (we can
best do that off-list).

[NTG-context] change register entry separator

2010-09-30 Thread Jano Kula

Hi,

any way to change register entry and subentry separator from + to
something else? Preferably to kanji character, so I'm sure it will not
appear in the text. Entries and subentries are autoflushed, so it can be
really anything.

Other way around: I substitute + with PLUS in index terms before
writing into the index, but which command is reading the sorted index
entries to change it back to + when typesetting the sorted index on pages?

Thanks,

Jano

Is fnt-29 a special (private) module?

 aa[z11,z12]=bb[21,z22]

 So now aa = bb = 0.5.

 And I'd need to access MetaPost values 'aa' and 'bb' from Lua (e.g. in
 Lua: local a = mpost.aa, b = mpost.bb).

 Is it possible somehow?

no

I don't know how MPlib handles metapost terminal output, but if you can
capture the terminal output in lua, then you can use

show aa, bb;

in metapost and parse the output in lua.

Only god knows that, I think. Delay for updating ConTeXt is 15
minutes, but only if something changes then everything else will be
updated as well. The rest is updated at least once per day, but there
are some other triggers ...

 P.S. Seems that uploads not go to minimal.contextgarden.net or

They do go automatically, but not immediately (given the frequency of
updates of modules, I never considered this to be a problem so far;
but we could add a trigger on modules website, so that the update

change).
